      I have been waiting for a while for that, but it turns out now only Dell take the 16:10 screen ratios seriously, I mean, on their high end product line. And checkout the Gen 3's screen brightness, still 300 nits for base model, which does not make any sense to me.

    I still have no idea why Lenovo still putting 300 nits screen on their Extreme product line. I thought it is along side with the Dell XPS 15 models and they have screen with 500 nits across all configuration. The poor screen is the reason why I try to sell my Gen 2 and get a dell XPS 17. Best keyboard on the world, but moderate screen. I would be back if one the the Extreme comes with a 16: 10 and 500+ nits screen.

    Must have list for GEN4 is new 16:10 screen ratio, 3060timaxq gpu + vapor chamber cooling, better 4k screen (power consumption) and less or Thermal/Power throtling.
    It would be a killer machine!
    pro: light, decent gaming perf, quiet, can undervolt, upgradeable, nuf ports, can run skyrim at ultra@60fps
    con:
    - no actual worthy upgrade over gen1 or gen2
    - no Ryzen CPU option
    - bad battery life with 4k display (max 4 hours of work)
    - heat and cpu power throtling after 2 minutes of 100% cpu utilisation or 80c, whatever comes first
    - bios upgrades are not allowing 100% fan spinning and are impacting performance even more due to thermal throtling
    - screen ratio is wasting space with bottom chin
    - speakers could be better and louder

    small correction: ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3. does not have optional Smart card Reader beacuse of 4G LTE option , this is the marked difference between of the construction of Gen3 and Gen2 ; another one si absence of Ethernet extension connect - replacable by using USB-C /LAN adapter, (SIM slot is available only on WWAN models)

    All value judgements aside, I have been quite disappointed with Lenovo's ThinkPad line/quality/support the past two years. Every single X1/E/P1 I had had TB3 failures, and it was a huge pain in the ass to get Lenovo to agree to fix them. In contrast to the thinkpad line, the legion laptops have really been improving.

I had to go to windows devices settings, open the mouse properties and turn off the “Allow this device to wake the computer” option.

    Despite larger dimensions X1 Extreme 3rd Gen is 300g lighter than XPS 15 2020...
    Without 16:10 I am going for XPS 15 (and this after being loyal to thinkpads for decade)
    Put 16:10 screen in there and you got a perfect machine (in which case I might sell the XPS and get the new thinkpad)

  • @XMACHINAv2
    @XMACHINAv2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish there was some definitive information one could point to regarding the Thinkpad build materials.
    I hear people in TH-cam reviews, and read comments all the time that Thinkpads are "made of plastic." (This seems to be one basis for derision of Thinkpads among Macbook and Dell XPS fans). For the record, the machines have metal chassis and are _coated_ in "soft-touch" plastic, but Lenovo doesn't exactly trumpet this fact, leaving room for misconception.
    And there are conflicting accounts of _which_ metal used for the chassis -- even within this video.
    I thought now that Lenovo had started labeling the machines with "Carbon Fiber + Magnesium" would put an end to any confusion, but then Lisa states that the machine is made of "aluminum and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene being the plastic coating)". This isn't the first time (or the 20th time) I've heard someone identify the Thinkpad chassis material as aluminum, but that's not what's written on the tin.
    Plus there's Lenovo marketing material highlighting the fact that the X1 Yoga silver variant was the first aluminum Thinkpad, and that great pains were taken to get that design up to the MilSpec standard applied to other Thinkpad models:
    "This year, Lenovo is adding a new material to the ThinkPad manufacturing process with the implementation of aluminum on the ThinkPad X1 Yoga. “Our customers highlighted a significant desire to have a metal ThinkPad,” says Paradise. “For the longest time, ThinkPad has been synonymous with the timeless black color, but in listening to customers, there were suggestions that we needed to embrace a new generation’s desire for new designs."
    I'm going with magnesium since all the evidence points there. I'd be happy for a correction should it apply.

    • @thewheelieguy
      @thewheelieguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It varies by model and part location, but magnesium, and carbon fiber reinforced plastic are the general materials for X and T series Thinkpads.

    Well, i am not qute sure what to get, tbh. I am using my laptop (old and very slow, 13 inch - not good for editing) for photo editing sony a7R3 files (50MB/Raw) so, a convertible and touchscreen should be nice, and i also do a lot of typing, like emails, linkedin, facebook, skype, viber etc, on daily basis, so good battery is a nice thing. Using mostly documents.
    What machine should i go for? There are 11th gen intel cpus, new ryzens and... hm. Help. Got around 1500-1600$ max.

    Been waiting to splash out $Au5-6k+ for an X1 Extreme for a few years now, hoping this Gen3 will the year, but was pretty disappointed when I saw the spec so gonna hold out for another year when 11th Gen comes out. Looking to upgrade from my Aorus X5 6850H & GTX 1070.

    Did they finally fix the PWM flickering on the OLED, esp on low brightness?

      Nope. Watch Matthew Moniz’s review vid. If you turn brightness down below a certain % pepper your Angus for some intense PWM.

    As usual, Lisa's reviews are the most accurate I've found on line. In my want to help out people in the community who may be as torn as I was before purchasing, I'd like to add some helpful tips from my personal experience. I was torn between 4k and FHD, so I bought both and am returning the 1080p. There is no comparison between the two. I'd heard grumblings about possible software interface problems with 4k, battery drain etc. I found that the 4k is a superior visual experience by leaps and bounds, it blows 1080p away. People told me originally that the human eye could not detect the difference between 1080p and 4k on a 15.6" screen. Not true at all. In Word, the tool bar icons were pixilated on the 1080p. On the 4k, there was no detectable pixilation and text is as sharp and clean and as beautiful as you'd see on late generation iPads. Maybe even sharper. When I italicized words in Word on the 1080p, in calibri font, the words were seriously pixilated. In 4k, again, zero pixilation. As for power drain from 4k, I left clicked the smaller battery icon and switched to power saver, and got hours of use unplugged. The 1080p maybe got an hour and a half more, not a deal killer since I'm plugged in most of the time. Let's talk about the lid on the 4k. You can't tell from the videos online as compared to a real-life experience how beautiful and cool the 4k carbon lid is. The carbon lid on the 4k adds a semi-rubbery industrial-cool texture that's not on the 1080p and the carbon thread design on the 4k lid makes the laptop look and feel way more premium than the 1080p, no comparison. Fan noise: so Lisa recommended not getting the i9 processor if you want the most chill quiet experience, instead, go with an i7 processor which I did. Since I write for a living, quiet is paramount. When I first started up the computer, when the computer was updating the BIOS etc., the fans came on pretty loud, but after the BIOS was updated and all updates were conducted, and I turned on to battery saver, I haven't heard the fans once in the span of 2 weeks, not even once. So big consensus with Lisa that i7 processor gives you a quieter experience. So fan noise complaints are in my opinion overstated. COLOR: this is a big one. When I first opened the laptop, I was a little horrified that the colors looked garish and neon-like, people's faces on TH-cam looked unnaturally and annoyingly red. Well I mucked around and discovered Lenovo Display Optimizer. Out of the box, the computer is set to NATIVE color in Lenovo Display Optimizer. Once I switched from NATIVE to STANDARD, colors were absolutely natural and beautiful and from that point I was utterly in love with the 4k version of the Extreme 3. It's a joy to work on. I was worried to hear there was less key travel on the Extreme Gen 3 as compared to Thinkpads of yesteryear, but key travel is excellent and it's a joy to type on. Last point, I heard that a lot of software don't interface well with 4k. In fact, there were glitches at first with some softwares, but after I either played around and/or called tech support for fixes, everything worked just fine. I have no interface problems at all. None. Love this laptop more than any I've ever had.

    I have the Gen 2 and there 3 things I hate about it. 1 how hot it gets to the point I think it slows down to not fry itself, 2 the positioning of the CTRL key and the FN. They're positioned backwards from your standard Windows computer and it annoys the he'll out of me, drives me nuts that Lenovo did this and 3 the backlit keyboard doesn't stay lit. Say you turn it off and you reboot it, it'll startup with the keys off, again annoying but not as annoying as the CTRL & FN keys. Otherwise I love this computer, especially how upgrade friendly they made it. About 6 screws on the bottom and wala, you're in unlike HP that makes them complicated to upgrade.
