The major update on the X1 Extreme Gen 3 are the graphics card. its gtx 1650 TI which is Gddr6, while Gen 2 is gtx 1650 with Gddr5.
Secondly, the ram is 2933MHZ (Gen 3), while Gen 2 is 2666MHZ.
Lastly, the cpu, the 10885H (Gen 3) is the refreshed version of 9880H (Gen 2).
Also, card reader is standard in the Gen 3, Gen 2 is optional.
In my opinion, if you have the money to throw around, go ahead and get the Gen 3, but Gen 2 should be a bit more stable as in budget wise.
**Note: if you're going get the Gen 2 with custom config, the max cpu you can get is 9750; 6 core 12 thread.**
P.S. if you have the Gen 2, it's not worth upgrading to Gen 3. Wait for next year when Intel comes out with the next gen cpu line up with 10nm and/or even 7 nm cpu.
It’s actually kind of interesting that it’s only about ~$50 extra to get a gen 3 over a gen 2 with comparable specs.
@jaspal singh most likely lenovo X1 Titanium and/or Nano will be 11th gen intel cpu. my guess is end of oct. or mid november will be released.
jaspal singh The X1 extreme gen 3 was released about 2 weeks ago. There isn't gonna be a gen 4 till next year.
Thank you ! I just bought a gen 2 at a great deal because of your in depth video (you re-assured me about the sound compared to the gen 3). Boggles my mind who would vote down someone that takes time to explain in detail the differences between all the models. Great video !!!
install throttlestop, tweak the profiles and you will get a laptop that cooler for the same speed.
Great video. Not worth the upgrade from the Gen 2 for me, but glad I was able to get the info about it here!
I'm an IT guy. In my experience lenovo always does the job for me. Beast in making. Love it for my personal projects. Also with win 10 pro, I can login to my machine remotely from my office. How cool is that!
Dope!
5:50 GTX 1650, not 650. And how is video editing not GPU intensive? My old laptop with a GTX 1070 and old gen Intel CPU outperforms the X1 Extreme Gen 2 with a newer CPU + 1650 when editing in Premier.
The CPU does the heavy lifting for video editing in Premier. I am not saying that the GPU doesn't get used. It just isn't used at 100% like the CPU is during rendering. I have GPU Acceleration and it still does not compare. Granted I believe DaVinci Resolve is driven almost entirely by the GPU.
@@AgentFitz Yeah it depends on what you actually do as a video editor ... After Effects, 3D Modelling, and Video editing from Premiere pro (Using GPU acceleration for rendering) can be very GPU demanding ... It's not a same fit for all kind of situation.
In the same boat as you. Perfectly content with my X1E1. You should look into the T15g. It's a pretty exciting new release.
The T15g is going to be awesome.
Thanks for tip, didn't know about this and the T15p. For regular mobile use I still would prefer the x1 extreme gen 3 and I don't need that much graphic power.
Thank you for the very informative video. Is the spreadsheet available somewhere for download?
Sorry it is available for download.
I have a gen 1 with the same processor as you. 1650 TI vs 1050 TI is somewhat of a difference(15%) and the reason I ordered a gen 3 is I did feel like I wanted a boost in CPU performance so I ordered an X1 extreme Gen 3 with an I9 10885H. I also wanted to have the face recognition which my gen 1 didn't had. I'll let you know if I feel like there's more than this different.
I have windows hello face recognition on my gen 1 and it’s sooo convenient! Best part is I didn’t order the laptop with it. I don’t know if Lenovo messed up but it is nice to have.
Agent Fitz, thank you for your review. I'm looking at a gen1 x1 extreme i7 8750h, gtx 1050ti and 16BG, but I'm told it has some/little coil whine. Is there any real way to fix coil whine? Thank you for the help.
My X1 doesn't have coil whine so I have no idea how to fix it.
I am planning to upgrade my X1 yoga gen 1 to X1 extreme gen 3, with core i9 CPU and 64gb of ram
Hang on. I’m waiting for the X1 Nano. Supposed to have intel TigerLake and be competitive with the XPS 13
@@noaln1697 that's cool. However, i need more RAM for my VMs
Amitesh Naidu I’ve also just realized that Tiger lake will be limited to 4 cores. I’m now considering the X1E3 myself lol.
I got a good deal on it too
jaspal singh I'm sticking with the i7. Has everything that I need. The i9 is just asking for thermal throttling.
I have a x1 gen 2...about to get a p1 gen 3
Look at that Oakley Pitchman R
Thanks for the video, quite helpful but got me wondering if Gen3 is worth the splashing out as opposed to a Gen2..
I currently have a P51 which needs a replacement for something alot lighter, better efficient use of ram and processor with good cache + disc i/o's.
I am a developer with 4 or more vm's running(headless**).
I couldn't care for the cam's quality, i hardly/never use it...
Current laptop has been in use since 2016 replacing an older W520. I've always gone for the lenovo mobile workstations and I tend to use a laptop for 4-6 years of at least 13hrs/day heavy usage.
I've been looking at the top of the range X1 X gen3 but i'm just worried i'll be disappointed in terms of value for money and more importantly how much juice i can get out of it.
I want something as light as possible and not a brick charger like the P series.
Any thoughts? @Agent Fitz
Oladayo Salawu I am not a developer but here is my take on this. If I had neither I would buy the Gen 3 unless there was a considerable price difference by buying an older X1. I would prefer the newer CPU/GPU but I would not upgrade from a Gen1 or 2 I would not upgrade to the the Gen 3. At least for my needs they are all more than capable. Since you are currently using the W520 this will easily replace it. My concern would be heat if you are running 4 VM or more for 13+hrs then you might run into a throttling issue. This laptop gets hot when I max it out due to the 3lb frame it can only dissipate so much heat. I don't run any VMs so I don't no for sure if this would be an issue. If you believe so you could look at the larger T15g. Just my thoughts.
Thanks @Agent Fitz, you've made some valid points in terms of heat dissipation wrt workload and hrs of usage plus I go on standby alot. In terms of T series I think with my experience with Lenovo mobile workstations I doubt size matters , if I'm honest the best laptops I have used are macbooks which have been lighter and smaller but I am just an apple hater 🤦🏿♂️. Thanks for the response much appreciated
I was holding out for Gen 3 but had to get a Gen 2 because my 6 year old laptop finally gave out. This is helpful because the only substantial difference I saw was WWAN being added to the Gen 3. I do a bit of gaming and with some undervolting, I get better that expected performance from this machine. That video card upgrade is definitely not worth it.
Glad this was helpful. There really isn't a big difference between Gen 2 and 3. Gen 4 upgrades are more substantial but the older systems are still awesome. I am still happy with my Gen 1.
about the 3 they had it cheaper than the 2.. do you use yours for video editing? i also have the msi gs66 wish is way more powerful but i dont need all that power right now.. what you think is the best decision
I bought my gen 1 primarily for 4k video and photo editing. I shoot and edit most things in 4k24p ProRes with no problems at all. I believe it could handle 4k60p without any issues but my cameras don't shoot in that resolution. I would expect better performance from the gen 2 or 3. I can't speak for 5.2k, 6k or 8k either.
Hello. Thank you for an awesome video as usual. I am currently in the market for something very mobile capable of photo editing (lightroom and Photoshop) and I am torn between the X1 and X1 Gen2.
I want to go for 4k display for better color accuracy, 32gb RAM, and core i7, but I'm quite confused about the graphics card (gtx 1050 Vs gtx 1650) - will I see any difference between the two graphics cards? If there won't be much difference I would rather go for the X1 Gen 1 strictly for the lower price!
Can you help please?
I use the gen for photo editing and it doesn't break a sweat. The 1650 will be faster but not by much considering they are both Max-Q cards. For photo editing I don't think you will tell the difference even with GPU acceleration. Granted you do get a generation newer processor which would make the gen 2 faster as well. If I were to make the decision it would boil down to how much money I am saving by going with gen 1.
Good video! I have a Gen, 2 so this is very informative. Thanks!
Possible to upgrade Extreme 1 with an Extreme 3's motherboard for example ? Or 1 to 2, or 2 to 3
That would be quite an undertaking. It seems like it would be possible though.
This was a HUGE help!
Good Afternoon, Thank you for the video. I currently have the x1 extreme gen 2 and I have issues with using an external 4k monitor via hdmi with my setup. I notice a lot of lag when using a web browser on the external monitor. Mind you, I have my laptop screen open as well and using it as an extended screen. If I move the web browser onto my laptop (Primary) screen -- the lag goes away. It's very annoying and I feel that my hardware should handle it just fine. I am curious ... do you run into this issue as well. I have tried other machines such as the Dell XPS 17 2020 model with absolutely no lag. I have tried everything I can think of to improve the performance on my x1 with no prevail. I currently have the I7...16GB ram...1650 video card. If you have any comments ... I would great appreciate it.
Try this fix (Lenovo released the update then removed but the link still works): www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-resolves-ThinkPad-P1-and-X1-Extreme-s-second-screen-low-framerate-bug-then-pulls-the-update-that-fixes-it.447060.0.html
I get zero lag with a 2k the external monitor when web browsing with any extended screen. It is a completely different story when gaming however. In your case if you are only web browsing on a 4k screen it should not lag. I assume you are using a HDMI cable that is suitable for 4k but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also if you are using any hdmi converters/switchs make sure they share the same refresh rate as your screen. Hope this helps.
@@AgentFitz thank you for the reply. Yes, I dig some digging and the Intel graphics is the cause. If I disable the graphics the problem goes away. Once I enable the graphics chip and re open edge or chrome ... the problem persists. The lagging only occurs in Chrome or edge. The rest of windows interface is buttery smooth. Very annoying. 😞
Hey Fitz, actually the BT is 5.1 not 5.0.
Appreciate the video! Thank you man
Thank you very much for this extensive and highly informative video. I am considering the purchase of a P1 Gen 3 to replace my T440s. Mainly for the larger 15.6 inch and 600 nits bright screen, which would be helpful for photo and video editing. I am also a heavy Excel user. Given that the X1 Extreme and the P1 are somewhat similar machines, could you tell me about any heat development issues and if the fans are noisy? What also attracts me to this latest version, if only cosmetics related, is a less fingerprint prone finish on the latest P1 generation. Might sound strange to a Thinkpad enthusiast, but I am also considering the MacBook Pro 16 as a more remote alternative. Thanks for your thoughts.
The awesome thing about P1 Gen 3 is that it comes with factory color calibrated, while X1 Extreme Gen 3 doesn't. The only selling point of X1E Gen 3 is that the graphics card is Gddr6, while P1 Gen 3 is T2000 that's Gddr5.
P1 line up is is more better if you need your color calibrated for specific work. X1E Gen 3 and P1 Gen 3 are pretty much the same but P1 Gen 3 has optional Xeon cpu, which X1E Gen 3 is maxed out at 10885H cpu. If i was you, i would get the P1 Gen 3 with either 10885H cpu or Xeon cpu, depending on what kind of work you'll do on it.
@@samh7982 Thanks Samuel. Much appreciated. I have just cancelled my P1 Gen 3 order after discovering that the same specifications I ordered here in Australia were A$2,000 cheaper in the USA. I contacted Lenovo and they were not prepared to match the price, stating that models were different according to sales regions. I sent the USA and AUS carts to them to prove that this is not the case. Anyway, don't like to be lied to and now looking at the Dell XPS 17 and possibly even the MacBook Pro 16. Undecided.
The only heat related issue I experienced was when running plugged in with max settings the left side of the keyboard was extremely hot. I believe this was operator error and not the laptop. The keyboard did not have adequate ventilation due to the surface it was on (my lap and furniture). Since the vents located on the bottom it could not dissipate heat effectively. I have never had this issue on a flat surface. As far as noise is concerned the fans are not very loud to me (purely subjective of course). They are loudest when running at full performance. Still quieter than my T430.
@@60beats44 you're very welcome! by the way, X1E Gen 3 and P1 Gen 3 both have WM490 chipset (one of the best mobile chipsets out as of now). alot of companies use HM470 chipset which is 16 pcie lanes, while WM490 chipset is 24 pcie lanes.
The more you know :)
Thanks bro.. u great
Thanks for the video
Hey Agent Fitz, thank you for your review, it helps me to make up my mind. I am looking for a new notebook for software development, running Win 10 Pro plus WSL Linux and occasional use of Adobe Creative Cloud. Currently I have a Lenovo C940 15" and really enjoy the speed of the i7-9750H cpu and the 4k display. For desktop replacement it's great that the keyboard can be folded behind the screen. However, for mobile use I never really like the Yoga keyboard as much as the Thinkpad keyboard. So I feel confident the X1 Extreme Gen 3 is the best machine for my semi-mobile needs like working in the train or when visiting my parents for a few days.
