Excellent review! Ordered mine today. As a side note, the carbon fibre weave is not per-se limited to the "high-end" systems, but to the high-end screens (4K ones). At least, on the European Lenovo site...
I've decided to order this laptop after reviewing your reviews for a few different models. I still like the look and feel, and the functionalities. The quality of the webcam is not too much of a hindrance because I have an external webcam and I also use 2 big monitors through a docking station.
I’ve had one of these for a few months in the same config except with the 165hz display. In theory I love the device but it’s been a lemon and will now be waiting 4-6 weeks for Lenovo to send out a replacement unit. 3 major failures. 1. Delivered with no thermal paste on the GPU causing severe throttling. 2. Stopped detecting SSDs, required a system board replacement. 3. After a 4 week wait got a replacement system board… and the 3070ti in it is faulty and crashes constantly. I feel like Lenovos QC has significantly dropped in recent years…

Nice review Andrew. I did hear from Jarrod's Tech that DDR5 x16 RAM isn't as troublesome as x16 DDR4 RAM. It might be important in VERY specific tasks that involve memory latency, but outside of that, the RAM in this laptop should be more than 99% of what you get with x8 DDR5. I also heard that 8 GB SO-DIMM sticks ONLY come in x16, so you'll need 16 GB DIMMs to get x8.
Nice review. I own the Gen 4 and love it and this has some great performance improvements. For those looking to buy, if Lenovo follows the pattern that they did with the Gen 4, the best sales on this will be earlier in November before the normal black Friday sales.
Spot on. I picked one up in early November before the normal black Friday sales just as you suggest and found it at a very reasonable price. Lenovo runs a lot of sales and has stackable coupons/discounts (including military, education, senior, and medical). Chatting online with their sales staff can often result in an even deeper discount than advertised. They know the "secret cheat code) to stacking the best discounts.🤣
i got this laptop recentrly, the one with the 3060 and i upgraded the ram from single channel 32 gb to dual channel 64 gb, got a r23 score of just north of 17000
Another desktop replacement, wrapped up in a Thinkpad shell. I really appreciate these. No, you do not have to buy a desktop to get desktop performance. That is great! However, power, heat and fan noise are still issues that x86 systems encounter. Arm innovation in the PC space is the next era. I'm looking forward to it. Apple is already there.
Laptops just are not desktop replacements. Quit the debunked hype. There's no upgradability here, no off-the-shells replacement parts and no hardware choice flexibility. You're always going to be thermal throttled and you're always ending up with higher price tags to do something a desktop can do better for a considerable lower cost.
Laptops are not desktop replacements. I have the high end Legion Pro with 13900HX and RTX4080 and it’s still barely half the performance of my desktop PC
Nice PC. Port selection is good although they should move one of the USB-C ports to the other side and swap it with one of the USB A ports which there are two on the same side. Minor detail. Watching you handle this it appears to be not a fingerprint magnet on the outside but a big fingerprint magnet on the inside. Camera and mic appeared good. Display is very good. Camera and Mics are very good. This might seem a little pricey and it is although one appears to get great quality for the money. Great review.

But i also would like to be able to play some games on it like total war and the latest COD. This would be my personal choice over the X1 carbon. Lenovo really doesn't disappoint. I also liked the XPS series but Dave 2D (another computer reviewer) stated that the track pad on the XPS had issues. The track pad would be wobbling like a bobblehead. They fixed it, but not 100% sure

Both! Just kidding. It would really be a tough decision because both are really good. I will say this, I am partial to OLED displays in general so I would lean to XPS 15 to some extent. That being said, I am really loving this X1 Extreme Gen 5. You really can't go wrong either way.

For some reason the 1080p webcam on the Gen 4 Version of the same laptop that you reviewed previously seems to have a better webcam than this Gen 5 version and its VERY noticeable!!! It's almost as if the webcam was downgraded. In my opinion, it looks as if it is 720p rather than 1080p and not a good one at that. Man, you should have started by saying all the things the laptop DID NOT have on it! This is a super complete piece of hardware! No wonder it's the Extreme.
I bought the Gen 1 version of this. The motherboard started failing within a few months. The price of an equivalent spec Gen 5 is now over 30% higher than when I bought the Gen 1. It is now over-priced unless you can get a big discount.
Yes, I bought a X1 Extreme Gen 5 in Sep 2022, and the motherboard failed. I sent to the Lenovo repair center in Texas. They changed a new motherboard for me. The product quality still a problem for this machine as of Nov 2022.
You can switch them in the Lenovo Commercial Vantage app or in BIOS. Apple and Lenovo ThinkPads do that configuration, from what I understand, because of the ease of reaching the Ctrl button without removing your hand position from the Home row on the keyboard. A business laptop configuration? Dunno, but it isn't for everyone.
@@iSean1 do you get seperate buttons as the button are very different sizes so you cannot switch it manually. You might be able to switch it in the bios but the labels on the keyboard will still be incorrect
@@guy7524 That is true. I think most don't look at the keys while typing so the actual labeling doesn't bother a lot of folks who switch them.
