    I'm so glad they keep the nipple, I remember when I used it first on a my dads friends thinkpad still from IBM at that time, it had a 800mb hdd (which was huuuuuge at the time, it was quite a while ago!) I immediately loved it, and I still prefer it over touchpads even though touchpads have become so much better, while the nipple is still basically the same from over 20years ago and still great!

      Good morning,
      I have an Ideapad 720s and the fan noise is terrible. The fan kicks in at 40 degree celsius (105 fahrenheit). Even when browsing or watching TH-cam the fan ramps up to full speed for 10 seconds before turning off completely for another 10 seconds. This repeats ad infinitum.
      Im not the only one who has this problem but Lenovo hasnt offered a fix in a year now.
      Really disappointed because it is an otherwise great laptop.

    the gen 2 is over$2400 at present, while this one is "only" $1,299". For my purposes, this one is great! I'm doing light content creation, lots of writing and must have a 15" screen. I watch the X1 Carbon videos and have test-typed them in the store and can't stand how small they are. I don't need a light laptop, if it's going on a desk or table most of the time.

    I had absolutely awful experiences with the XPS 9570. It took two units exchanged before I got one that didn't have a ton of major issues and then I had a fan bearing go caput within a month. I bought an X1 Extreme based on the few early reviews and so far the quality control is on a whole other level. I don't have any backlight bleed, the keyboard is amazing, the system is silent during most of my work and much quieter while gaming than the XPS was - not that I game that much. Excellent inputs too. I wish the display was a bit brighter however. ThinkPads are certainly an acquired taste in terms of aesthetic. Overall very happy with it though - it feels as premium as the MacBook Pro does (different style of course) which is no small feat. There are always compromises when you want a notebook to do it all but they nailed it pretty well. In any case I'm happy to see more companies trying at this segment because it wasn't too long ago I was stuck with the 15" MacBook Pro because they were the only ones on the block!

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey man thanks for sharing! It certainly is a sweet laptop. Which model of the xps did you have ? Was it the i9?

    • @digitalsommelier4779
      @digitalsommelier4779 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the 4k with i7. Performance was always great and I still think it would be my favorite laptop if Dell could just sort out the little things on the software and hardware side. When paying 2gs I expect as close to perfect a device as possible you know? I don't know if you noticed it in your review of the X1E but did you notice the somewhat odd fan behavior while gaming? It seems like it doesn't crank the fan up as much as it will when just putting on a CPU load. Not an issue in practice but weird all the same.

    • @Dori_1111
      @Dori_1111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for commenting on the noise level. I don't know why I have to go through 10 reviews and nobody comments on the noise level. The only way is to buy and return it if the noise drives you crazy (which is common in these powerful notebooks). For people that use these for business or require concentration, noise level is very important. You don't want to walk into a meeting and get everybody distracted.

    Thinkpads always had the best keyboards in the business period. I have kept my old and aging x220t because the keyboard on that one is just fantastic. they are understated piece of technology. My only issue is thermals where almost all thinkpads throttle in one way or another. I think users of this market segment wouldn't mind a thicker and cooler design.

    Great review! Thanks! Ordered the exact same model, looking forward to trying it, gonna undervolt a it for better temperatures though.
    I do miss one thing from your review: Comparisons - always nice to see it side by side the main competition the Macbook Pro 15", the Dell XPS 15 and the Zenbook Pro, maybe even the HP Zbook laptops. Especially the Macbook would for me have been very interesting to hear your thoughts and see it side by side, just for a minute 1 or 2 - would mind a little longer review. I think 10 minutes is ideal. Keep it on!

    It looks like the designers of the XPS15 Core I9 share the same bed with the X1 Xtreme designers when it comes to heat management. I am a developer and it just makes me worried if I spend the big bucks (over $3000 Australian dollars for the 16 GB Ram spec'ed out models.), I get issues with the performance and longevity of the laptop.

      @@wolffpv535 Changed BIOS settings for graphics from "Hybrid" to "Discrete" and rebooted my laptop.
      The laptop rebooted, like every other BIOS setting change I've done pretty much for the last 20 years. Except this time, the laptop had no display. Just a black screen. No cursor. No BIOS screen, no POST. Nothing. Tried HDMI cable. Tried pushing the laptop's BIOS reset (from manual, plus when tech support whom I called for my less than 24-hour old laptop) for 20+ seconds. Nothing helped. Tech support's solution? Ship laptop back to Lenovo certified service center to have the motherboard replaced.
      Nope, no thanks. I'll take a refund, thank you very much, and buy a laptop where a BIOS change doesn't brick the laptop. But hey, I'm not the only one, so don't take my word for it:
      forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-X1-Extreme-Black-Screen-Help/td-p/4286292

    Matt, i have X1 Extreme with ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - its suxx. Flickering screen. The laptop itself is great, but this dock makes the laptop sucks. The work is not comfortable, it slows down and the screen is still flashing, support from linen is silent on this topic, it does not help, despite the great cosmic price. A terrible bug. For me it's money down the drain. I have advice for all of them - think three times before you buy it.

    What's the 16 GB memory stick of choice for the X1 Extreme. Wanting to upgrade my machine to 32 GB, I know it comes with a 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz, but what's the best to buy. I know the Samsung SSDs are the best to buy, and then maybe the WD black after that. But what about the memory,... what's the best of the many 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz choices out there? Thanks!

    Hi there great video.
    Does anyone know how the i5 does in this laptop in terms of thermals. I want to buy a X1ae gen 2 but im not sure if the i7 is worth the upgrade over the i5...
    I know its 4 cores against 6 but if the thermals are limiting the 6 cores anyway....
    I wont be doing any really demanding tasks. I will use it mostly for writing and content consumption (Thats why I'll be getting the 4k screen) and some light fotoediting. The i5 would definately suffice for my needs but I want to get the best core because I want to futureproof the device - so that it will still be snappy a few years down the road.

    So judging from your statement at 5:43 you deem the Blade 15's thermal management / cooling power superior for longer load spans? Since most people are already calling the Blade 15 "a bit toasty".
    In terms of keyboard, can the Blade compare - in any way?

    Thanks the the great review! Quick question... Is there a limit on how much TB's i can add on each m.2 slot? I want to add two 2TB SSD making it a total of 4TB. Lenovo says each slot can handle a max of 1TB so a total of 2TB, is that correct? I wasn't aware that there is a storage limitation...

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply.. I was not aware that there are such limitations. I understand that that's the max that is offered by the Lenovo store but I didn't know it was an actual limitation. I was looking into installing 2 of those baby's
