This was soooo insightful about the justice sensitivity. The example of the woman in the supermarket was so good. It’s that crushed feeling when someone thinks you have done something selfish or thoughtless when you are trying so hard and care so much but your working memory lets you down (again!) and you zone out or forget to do something. It’s devastating when people assume the worst of you when you are trying so hard. 😢

Its my thinking that the justice thing is at the heart of what we call ptsd (complex more accurately with early onset in life as with adhd etc))

Lost my dad Saturday nov 9 due to him unaliving himself. He had severe ADHD. This is scarily accurate. He was an alcoholic. He did so friggn good for like 15 years and my aunt got diagnosed with cancer and we had her for acouple more years. Great episode. Wow.❤
I too was diagnosed in my late 20s in early recovery. Ive had issues in life wit drugs and alcohol. But have been on suboxone and clean from h since 2018. What a great speaker. I love her. ❤

Her and I life is so much alike and she has adhd as well and helped me get on meds for mine. Although idk if it's the best and I always have issues at pharmacy getting it filled cuz there are shortages. Mine is conserta. I’m 49 and my GP has just referred me, received a Right to Choose email last week saying I’m in the system and the waiting list is approx 7 months. They’ll call me when they’re ready.
I’d try to go back and see a different GP if you can, say you want a second opinion if you have to give them a reason. You shouldn’t have to though. I wish you luck 🙏💛
ps although I always had struggles, my life was turned upside down when I had my only child 16 years ago. It actually kicked off 17 years ago, as soon as I got pregnant. My kid’s dad said the old me disappeared completely as soon as I became pregnant. As well as post natal depression, I had post partum psychosis, and all without any guidance or medical care or help. My GP at the time actually told me there was nothing they could do for me so I was left untreated with a tiny baby. I almost got sectioned 4 years later after having a full breakdown (it was a 4-5 year breakdown in all honesty, but the doctors saw the last bit), I was a breath away. I’ve never been listened to, validated or understood by medical professionals, at least not until receiving this recent referral. It’s so tough isn’t it 😞🙏

You know Alex, a lot of people think ADHD meds will reduce creativity but my experience has not been that way. I've noticed it with some other mental health meds but not so much with stimulants. As a designer I use my creative skills a lot at work and I've found being medicated has actually helped pull my brain back to a speed that is usable rather than overwhelming.

ok...pls don't stress. I'm 63, diagnosed 3 years ago. I've had to try 2 different meds. I won't take "uppers" and my psych Rxd me a SNRI. It's mainly for depression/anxiety. You'll find there are more than one co-morbidity that accompanies ADHD. ( yahoo, huh?) and this works for me. Does it cure ALL my symptoms, no. But that's what cognitive therapy is for also imo. Now I finally know that I'm not a "weirdo" who can't handle life...I have ADHD. I'm learning that 1. It's OKAY and 2. It's possible to live with it. I'm working on it 😊
      Good luck and hugs!!

I just want to add my thanks to Denise for this excellent episode. I've watched/listened all the way through over the last two days (ha ha, I have ADHD I of course hit pause a few times!) and have a great admiration for her honesty and openness, especially given the (to my mind shameful, ghastly and absurd) ease with which snippets can be picked up and misused by others nowadays to their own ends. I happen to be female and the same age as Denise, and of much the same mindset - plus also suffering bouts of severe depression along with my neurodiversity - and perhaps that is bound to colour my view favourably, but I feel she is deserving of the greatest respect. I had to grin many times at her diverting at length from Alex's questions (oh I find it so comforting when other people do that and it's not just me!), which is of course such a big ADHD thing. So many wonderful "You too!" moments, especially regarding the injustice overwhelm thing mentioned by both Denise and Alex. So so comforting, again, to hear this is a thing. Doesn't help in a way to know that of course, but boy it's comforting. Thank you. I hope Denise looks back on this with a sense of pride. I for one am grateful to her and for what it's worth I lost count of the times as I was listening when I thought, "I LIKE this lady!". Judy

When ADHD medicine works properly, it helps focus all those ideas and channel creativity in helpful ways. The right meds at the right dose will absolutely not “mute” you! And if you try one and it doesn’t feel right, you can stop and try something else. There are so many more options and delivery systems available these days than there used to be!!! I wonder how many people if tested for adhd would come out with a diagnosis....quite a lot I would imagine,I wonder whether there is such a thing as "neurodivergence or neurotypical" but just different people who process things differently and we all need to learn how we process things and what our senstivities or lack of maybe.
I still can't help but think adhd is complex trauma or developmental trauma of some kind,I relate to alot of the things Denise talks about and have suffered with severe depressive episodes and RSD and many other sensitivities...I think you can also train and learn different ways of coping and understanding yourself.
I would love you to get Gabor Mate on who has written Scattered Minds and see what he has to say and whether you disagree with him that adhd is a symptom of complex/developmental trauma...maybe a parent who was unattuned to us or stressed or emotionally unavailable or just not seen/heard every well.
Alot of it does seem to do with how we see ourselves or fear of how others may see us and that is very much a thing to do with self esteem, fears of being misunderstood or seen as "bad"or wrong or not OK is some very fundamental way.
I do think alot of us either walk around thinking something is wrong or different about us and others who walk around absolutely oblivious as to how they effect others or lack total self reflection.
At the end of the day I think far far more people walk around feeling not ok about themselves, shame or a sense of insufficiency/inadequacy than people who have healthy self esteem and can reflect ina way that doe not make them overthink or spiral or others who are more on narcissist spectrum who totally lack ability for any self reflection or awareness and bulldose through life not caring about others...which is also quite alot it seems plus we have a culture that tends to reward that kind of behaviour too.Senstivity is something that is often seen as a weakness or problem rather than a strength.

I don't do this because I hate conflict but I've had it done to me by a boss for 8 years and I despised him because of his behaviour....now I kinda understand him. Thank you ❤

Also I don't agree with Denise about kindness or courage and that you cannot teach yourself kindness or courage for that matter because you can and Buddhism is for example a whole practice and philosophy and way of being thats ALL about cultivating kindness and compassion and ultimately love for ourselves, our fellow beings and the world and life itself.
Kindness can be learnt and taught just as we teach children and just as cruelty can be learnt, taught or encouraged either way.
Also I am sure there have been and still are times that Denise is unkind, she may not register it as such because she is unaware but another person might feel it whether she intended it or not, most "unkind"people do not go around thinking I am an "unkind person"and all of us can be capable of being unkind at times when we feel threatened or insecure for isntance...so kindness can be taught and developed if the will is there.
Yes some people are naturally drawn to be kind maybe because they are natural empaths or were brought up to be kind or had trauma and learnt the power of kindness or in their family etc.BUt kindness is learnt just as cruelty can be a learnt behaviour too.
I think kindness is also a much misunderstood thing and we often think of kindess as people pleasing which is not the same thing or its about superficial appearances or what appears to be kind and socially acceptable even if it means not really speaking up or saying what we really mean or being assertive and in our culture,British culture directness can be viewed as "unkind".
Also we tend to ignore that kindness also includes how we talk to ourselves or respond to ourselves and not just others so if we are kind to ourselves and cultivate self compassion and understanding then we are more likly to be kind to others but that does not mean letting people or ourselves get away with things.
I guess kindness is a discipline and can be learnt and practiced and encouraged and lets face it in our society kindness is not exactly something that seems to be encouraged that much and is often viewed as weakness.
Trye real kindness does take courage and being the "bigger person often",not reacting from our hurt defensive places and having a certain level of self awareness...so yes kindness can be taught and learned, its just that our culture does not do a very good job of it or edcuate children much on emotional intelligence or how to deal with emotions better.

1:37:09 I have this too, and I think I know why this is.
If everyone lets it be "just about our situation" when something unfair happens, then nothing will ever change systemically. It feels plain wasteful and irresponsible to not spread the insight gained from suffering. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. If I keep quiet, I become the good man who does nothing and lets evil prevail. It's all about learning from our collective mistakes in order to make the world better. I'm putting graffiti on the walls for those who come to the same station after so that they can avoid getting on the pain train
