Overall this is a nice laptop that puts performance ahead of battery life in a package that might be better suited for more professional environments vs. the Y700 gaming machine. It's thinner, lighter, and looks more like a work computer.
Its Nvidia 950M GPU is less powerful than the one in the Y700 gaming laptop but it is good enough for decent framerates in modern games including GTA V that I tested in the video. I also like that it's possible to upgrade the RAM and hard drive relatively easily.
All in this is a nice desktop replacement machine that will occasionally be untethered from a power supply. The GPU adds performance that other laptops at its price point might lack.

Great review and thanks for taking the back off and showing us the internals. I'm a huge lenovo fan but i really cant see spending this kind of money on an ideapad. Both dell and asus have similar machines with gtx 960m video cards that have been on sale for $800 range. I cant go less than the thinkpad e series build quality with lenovo's offerings. The ideapad makes sense at the low i3 $300-400 range but this product i'm scratching my head as to who its for. The y700 is definitely gaudy looking, i'll give you that, but this is a lot to shell out just to get a subdued look. Hopefully it quickly gets good discounts like many lenovo laptops.

I bought this laptop back in April this year. My only problem with it is the screen doesn't seem that bright. I have it turned all the way up and it pages like here on TH-cam the white back ground looks more off white beige looking. Anyone else's look like that or should I have sent it back?

Got the white one, had to get an ssd upgrade to get a better performace. But now that its upgraded its pretty good actually, runs software smoothly whether it be 3dsmax, autocad to even games like GTA V, fallout 4 and xcom 2
Beware of the static electricty at the palm though..

Why you dont overclock the procesor? If you keep it at 2.60 GHz is normal to have under 60 fps on GTA V. If you overclock the procesor at 3.5 u will get around 60-70 fps.

Would you still buy this laptop in med 2017 ? To be specific I am asking because I can see the review is 1 year old so I wanted to know if something could be missed up with the laptop for example, the battery, would it still run as good as a laptop that came out of the factory 1 month ago ?
I have had this laptop for about 9 months and I love it, but 2 caveats.
1. I normally don't use it off of the charger very often (the battery life isn't that good since it is a 3-cell battery powering a quad core cpu and discrete graphics)
2. The games I play aren't all that demanding, Rocket League is probably the most intensive thing that I play nowadays.
If you can find a good price on a laptop with either a 1050 or 1050ti, it eats the 950m alive when it comes to gaming performance..

This one is great for programming. You won't care about the graphic card. The best laptops now come with the same processor and memory as this one.

I bought this laptop and my laptop is only few days old. I found that the temperature become EXTREMELY HIGH when i play games. I play dota2 and ark survival evolved with default settings, it has the higher temperature as compared to my 4 years old ASUS laptop. Is this the problem on my laptop or it is "normal"?

Yes, It has a 4 core CPU and thats a normal core count for editing.
Does this system support any kind of GPU switching between the Intel and NVIDIA chips? I'm assuming not since the battery life is pretty paltry, and if that's the case, I wonder why they wouldn't have implemented this feature.
To be honest, I fail to see the point of this product. A business is going to purchase a ThinkPad, while a gamer is going to go for the Y700. And a gamer on a budget would be better served buying that Dell Inspiron 15 you reviewed a couple months ago, as it has a full-on GTX 960M. Its CPU isn't as powerful, but it will still perform better overall while costing a couple hundred dollars less.
All nividia have something that switch gfx card automatically (although I thought both AMD and nvida have it). You are right about the point of this though, both the 700 and y700 cost about 600$ and the y700 is significantly better, except that red LED thing.
No, not all NVIDIA-based notebooks have GPU switching. Most high-end, many mid-range, and all models that have internal G-Sync support do not use the Intel GPU.
Wait, not even manually?
Nope. Optimus (NVIDIA graphic switching) is not compatible with G-Sync or SLI. Also, the company probably figures that most anyone buying a high-end product isn't going to use it on the battery much, if at all, so there's no reason to put such capability in there. My primary machine is a gaming laptop with a GeForce GTX 980M, and it doesn't support switching, which is exactly the way I want it.

it's the part that connect the body and the monitor, the rotating mechanism... I don't know how to explain it clearly.. you can google 'laptop hinge' to clarify. So I'm asking if u can lift the upper part with one hand, without requiring other hand to hold the body down, is it possible?
Yes it is possible i i would not recommend it to you to do that though. It might break the screen of that laptop because the screen is too soft and hinge might break if you hold in one hand :)

My littlebrother has this laptop, it runs at 52 degrees Celsius under load playing overwatch, mine runs at 72 degrees Celsius playing overwatch. The specs are identical to my laptop which is a HP pavilion gaming 15. Except mine is upgraded from 8 to 16Gb ram, other than that they are the same. The difference in cooling is that this has two fans mine has one fan. I have a cooling pad and my laptop is overclocked. When I did overclock it I clocked it with headroom for the voltage, to ensure it's stable. Btw it's stock voltage. So if I would undervolt it one step it should be fine, though then I need to check the stability.

I bought this one and waiting for the XPS. It's fast and benchmarks well, but not something I will fall in love with.
