  • It took more than a year, but Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has finally announced a new police chief. Floyd Mitchell was most recently the police chief in Lubbock, Texas. Before that, he was the chief in Temple, Texas. Mitchell will lead a department that hasn't had a police chief since Mayor Thao fired LeRonne Armstrong. Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo joins CBS News Bay Area Elizabeth Cook to discuss the Mayor's pick and the ongoing crime and public safety issues, particularly in the Hegenberger Corridor, where several businesses have shut down recently

    Nothing is going to change in Oakland until there are responsible mothers and fathers in the black community.

    Noel Gallo voted to defund the police and he has the gall to say that safety and security is the most important. SMH. Gallo has got to go in order for Oakland to move forward.

      Hardly. Look up crime rate in Lubbock Texas. He's no stranger to crappy crime ridden areas. Let's see what he gets for a budget, as well as for the DA's office.

      @@harlanjackson6112 I checked violent crime rates of Lubbock which stand at 2.23 per 1,000 while Oakland stands at 12.2 per 1,000. That’s nearly 6 times as high. I’m sure managing Lubbock is no easy feat, but nothing could prepare any chief for all of the issues Oakland has. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him but he’s inheriting a giant mess that politicians have left for him… and I hope he’s up for the challenge.

    • @harlanjackson6112
      @harlanjackson6112 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shiftmove371 Given that he spent the vast majority of his career (25 years) working as a LEO in Kansas City with an even higher violent crime rate than Oakland, I suspect nothing will surprise him. His job will be to address all crime, and I for one suspect he is up for the task. In any event, no rude awakening IMO.

    I don’t buy it… he left as police of chief because of “slow 911 answer times”?? For one, NO way a Police Chief leaves for that reason. For two, if they DID leave for that reason, why would he move somewhere that ALSO receives criticism for slow 911 response times? I’ve heard two news stations say this, but it just sounds so random to me. Anyone else have more insight?
