- With hybrid work becoming the norm, there is still an absence of people in downtown Oakland during the day that once kept The Town busy. But the downtown activity at night has now jumped to 100% of pre-pandemic levels. Max Darrow reports.

oakland is safe as long as you don't go outside or inside
I’m safe inside in my Oakland Hills home with my 9 MM near by and motion sensors around the perimeter that alerts me well before they arrive at a door or window. They will pick the wrong home and make the top of the news. Multiple neighbors are prepared also.
Well when you have to make at least 131k in SF in order to live comfortably going out really isn't a priority.
The light at the end of the tunnel is the headlamp of an oncoming train!
😂
Understand: Largest employers have hired private security for their employees just to get to their cars safely. Lake Merritt is now a parking lot/market with NO police walking beats and elders being manhandled. Youth have grown up stepping over the SAME VAGRANTS FOR YEARS! Why expect them to be moral citizens? Connect the DOTS😮😢
You obviously don't live there. I go to Lake Merritt at least five times a week. Never an issue. Have met dozens of amazing people
Essentially, many establishments are closed, and surviving businesses are attracting customers from those establishments.
This is kind of sloppy reporting .
clearly you filmed the main portion of the story some time ago. and then, you just kind of surreptitiously Insert chef German’s more current situation …at the very end.
I hope he just moves, sooner than later, so he can find the healthy business environment He and his team deserves.
It’s not the pandemic
Yes it is it’s happening everywhere
Chef Nelson was just crying last segment when his other restaurant got broken into..Quit lying about Oakland.
They mentioned that in the video. Quit making one story tell the whole story.
Tell me you didn't watch the whole video without telling me you didn't watch the whole video.
Losing all the teams really counts for a lot. Think of the places people don't go to to watch games or after going to games. Pre-pandemic everything was on the upswing. It's gotten livelier but the businesses are doing a lot of starting over.
Truly a propaganda piece. Especially for those of us born and raised in the Bay and see the decline regularly.
Pre tech boom oakland downtown was basic. People need to stop making it more than it ever was. During the tech boom, Sf downtown was so crowded because people stayed in SF after work for a few hours because the traffic was so bad to get out of there. 2 hours just to get across the bridge to oakland. Normally that's a 10-15 minute ride.
LIES.
When it costs $60-80 to park no one's coming downtown. End of story.
Crime crime crime!
The PEET's at Latham was great. The sinks in the store were located outside the bathroom. Hence if somebody was in the restroom too long. The gestimate of that infraction would be time in until washtand.
Remember the Jeff Bridges air crash film, where he is lamenting the loss of potential of downtown. WAS GREAT.
Dr Chappel obviously hasn't looked at the data over the last ten+ years.
Low margin restaurants have a short life span due to a variety of reasons.
Even with an over 30% commercial vacancy rate, rents continue to rise. This doesn't follow supply and demand. I can name over two dozen restaurants that have closed in Oakland over last 10 years. This isn't a new problem since Covid.
Oakland is lit on the weekends. It's a great weekend destination. During thd week downtown Oakland is dead. San Francisco is dead night and day
The jump needs to be categorized. Jump mean good or it can mean jumped literally.
real estate has its laws
After hours activity = Crime
You mean ALL hours activity. They burglarize mansions at 2am.
did they get their permit to go out
Cell phone data? What cell phone data?
Make office spaces into housing.
Working from home is good for the climate. Less people downtown the less carbon footprint. That’s what we want. No business means no carbon emissions.
Exactly, thats why I wish NYC would shut all its offices and restuarants and just leave apartments
It's also harmful towards human progression in a sense giving the fact that loneliness is a world epidemic today and is killing us more and more. There is a fine balance between the two as climate should be the number one priority without sacrificing our emotional and physical connections to one another. Also, its not going out that is the problem its how far we travel to go out, neighborhoods walking distance riding bikes, e bikes, e boards, e trolleys , e rail cars, should all be integrated more into our city's of the future. We live in poorly designed city's for carbon sustainability.
👍😁
Make all the city workers, county workers, state workers, federal workers work in the office since were paying tax paying dollars that would help in downtown recovery and go back to the old laws for shop lifters and let security restrain the crooks and more undercover officers and persecute the car burgerlars ,more police dispatchers.
So they didn’t interview an Oaklander? lol 😂 they interviewed someone who looks like she wouldn’t know a damn thing about what’s happening in Oakland..
Them ppl took in n out down
Very nice try at a puff piece for a city that's well past dead....
Yep
Flourishing 😂
I can't stand the gentrification and commercialization of "the town". For 25+ years you only heard it from a certain type of person (typically Oakland natives not from the hills). Now newscasters and non natives using it sounds so cringe I want it to stop 😂
To fix oakland they need to change the NAME to East San Francisco.
San Francisco Bay City
Hell no
🤦🏻♂️ 🤢
🤣
Damn you beat me to it!! 😂
Mmmmmmmole.
Uptick during night time from crimes and sideshows for sure
Two things cities can do is actually arrest people for committing crimes and dealing with the homeless issue and not just throw money at the nonprofit industrial complex.
so this tracking of city recoveries by cellphone usage is artificial if companies are mandating workers work in-office X amt of days per week
Oh it’s bouncing alright. I love you guys. It’s safe now!! All is well.
PROPAGANDISTS oh maybe no one will remember it was after all, a few hours ago.
I hope Newsom is disclosing your propaganda appropriately. Thanks for telling the populous how great we are feeling!
It’s all about the ridiculous lockdowns. Be honest.
Activity is up on the weekends because people can come to Oakland and do their dirt without any interference from the police. I've seen lots of sketchy folks around the new bars/clubs/restaurants.
You obviously don't live there
Oakland is lit on the weekends because hard working people want to get out, have some drinks and politic and meet new people
@@John-pz6nm Lol! I've lived here 21 years and know the ins and outs. But glad you're having a good time. 😊
@@Ay-B They don't come to Oakland to do their dirt
Be careful where you step 💩
I live in Oakland
There's no 💩 on the sidewalk
San Francisco it's everywhere
God and they call the bay an International city!?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I would hate for these democraps to see a real city like NYC, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, Shanghai, Moscow, Miami, Bogota, Chicago, ATL, Rio, Seoul, HK, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Taipei. Singapore, Hanoi, Ho Chi, Rome, Milan, Mexico City, Acapulco, Madrid, London, Oslo, Brussels, Melbourne, Sydney, Delhi, Hyberdad, Baghdad, Lahore, Kuwait City, Dubai, Abu Dabui, Mogadishu, Lagos.
You need more white peoples and families in Oakland and not hooliganism
Stop!! Crimes don't discrimination trust me, there are more whites, blacks and Mexico doing the same crimes, now what you don't see is a lot of Arabs doing crime. Because they are supported by the king of Saudi.
remote work needs to come to an end. lets use the tax code to encourage employers to put an end to it
I’d hate that. I’ve done some of my best work of my career when working from home.
Office work needs to come to an end.
