I don't think Jon and the others at TDS even realize yet what they're doing, and for whom.

Exactly, I can't think of any issue more important. "Follow the money" as they say. As a society, I wish we would start discussing this heavily, starting in school, looking at cases in both local and national politics and debating what exactly corruption is.
The better we can define it and identify it, the better we can hold politicians accountable. And, to raise self-awareness too, to make just a bit louder in peoples' heads the voice telling them they should be uneasy on that luxury skiing trip. People will still try to be corrupt of course, a la Sen Menendez, but we need to stop what we can and when we can.
It's just amazing that most people are tolerant of corruption. There's no will to do anything about it, though it would help fix so many problems that people do care about.

I'll tell you what gives it away 100% of the time. If they accept corporate PAC money, congratulations, corruption achieved! VERY few people in government actively refuse to take large corporate donations because they are implicit bribes. Bernie Sanders, for example, exclusively takes donation money obtained through grassroots funding and turns away huge sums from corporate donors because he actively chooses to serve his constituents rather than corporate interests.
