Wilson Atomatoys:
This was a pre-war toy company, that specialized in the Giddyup Buttercup toy, a mechanical horse. The CEO was Marc
Wilson and their head of design was Arlen Glass. Marc fired Arlen when the truth about the SCYTHE program came out.
They were repurposing their factories to make landmines for the military. Arlen spoke out and Marc had him thrown
out. Then the bombs hit, and Arlens family, who at the time were in cambridge, died. He went to what is now the
cambridge crater and became a ghoul. We help give him closure by bringing him Marlene's Holotape, a holotape from
his daughter. For everything else, keep watching :)

Really, he got the last laugh. He was still working on the toys, he was the last surviving member of the board (I highly doubt his 'firing' had gone through the system that quickly). He'd even sold one, to you, in return for a holotape.
Atomatoys is still in business, and following the original vision of a better future through the one thing nuclear fire could never take from him; Hope.
He is keeping the lights on XD

Arlen disappears from the Slog not long after this, and one of the other settlers told me something about him leaving. I wonder what becomes of him- if he reappears somewhere else. I've never seen him again, and that's a shame- I feel like his character could have had more story past this. Maybe in the Nuka World DLC.
You don't ever see him again, but you do find a completed Giddy-Up Buttercup as a random encounter with a note saying 'to any lucky boy or girl' or something to the effect
perhaps he went to the Cambridge crater and became a feral/committed suicide?
Maybe we'll see him again in future Fallout games?
He became a wandering toy maker, creating and leaving toys across the wastes.

This is one of the things Bethesda excells at, these little stories you find hidden off the main trail in their games.
Anyway a great video as always Apple. Interesting to watch as I haven't been to the HQ yet myself. Meaning all along I just thought Arlen in the Slog was just some random eccentric ghoul wanting to fix that toy, but now I know there's quite a sad story attached to him.
That's what I was thinking too since, I've never been here myself.

I know it's been a year since this video was uploaded but I wanted to point out that Marc was trying to do the opposite of Hallucigen with the accounting. Marc told the guy to make it look like the company was doing worse, not better. He didn't want to be making toys so was trying to convince the board that they needed to take the military contract. That's why the sales forecasts needed to be revised down. To make the military contract look better in comparison. Small point and maybe not important but at least part of the stress Arlen had was manufactured by Marc.
This was literally the saddest story in the game, I was in a flood of tears when I gave Arlen the holotape
You say its odd that they have a mini theater, but based on the podium in the corner, that's probably where they did company presentations, and maybe board meetings. And great video to!

I always feel so bad for the poor souls that had to live through the world falling apart as ghouls. They remember everything and most of them have horrible stories of those they lost.

+Finnishbro YT I mean, look at the super mutants we know who still had their intelligence. Marcus, Fawkes, the grandma from New Vegas, even Tabitha just wanted her friend back. When Super Mutants think for themselves, they can be the best friends humanity could ask for.
oh man, i can't even imagine what arlen would be feeling hearing his daughter's voice again after 200+ years. of all the sad stories in fallout 4 arlen glass's story is one of the ones that cracks me up the most.
The arlen situation made me cry.
I think the reason why some people get absolutely immolated from the atomic blast and others survive becoming ghouls has to do with the fact that the human race in general have been affected by the Forced Evolutionary Virus before the war. An interesting thing I found out about the FEV is the fact that it is an artificial virus that is airborne. What if the reason why no one gets cancer from gamma radiation is because everyone has a small concentration of the FEV. I could actually do an entire video on the subject
That was the point. In the Fallout bible it was hinted that every mutated creature is the result of radiation and FEV.

Let's spice things up and do Cranberry Island on Far Harbor. For those that do not know Cranberry Island is a series of connected locations south of Huntress Island in the Southeast corner of Mt. Desert Island (the island Far Harbor takes place on.)
He's not done with Far Harbor yet so he won't do it yet

He seems to do the ones he visits in his play through but will probably do any he misses later on.
nah he should really mix it up and do that whale that fell from the sky and crash land in the desert from fallout 2. my personal therory is that vault tec teamed up the plungers to do it.

If I were handed that tape, I would fall back into a depressed slump. Breaking down right in front of the person who retrieved the tape. Don't know how long it would be before I could get back up and continue life.
Another note: Let's not forget Megaton, if you set off the bomb, we have Moira who somehow survives ground zero blast and heads to Underworld in FO3 or Billy who survives as a ghoul inside a fridge in this game.
But at least Billy had someone to go back to. And Moira....I feel like she wanted it to go off. She didn't seem so keen on the town. But books though...I can sell you a wasteland survival guide for 1870 caps or all your ammo.

This guy's story breaks my heart every time I hear it, and that damned Holotape.
In regards to that random named Super Mutant. that's one of the things Bethesda does that makes me like them so much. There are loads of characters in their games who are named after fans, employees, etc. who sadly are no longer with us.

NO, Everything in that building was a reference to MLP. Pegasi, Unicorns, Princess line, And Big Mac is a character in the show.
I think Rockstar and Bethesda make some of the best games ever when it comes to world and immersion!.

You can talk to him again and once your done with that he'll leave The Slog with a complete Giddy Up Buttercup left behind. Not sure what happen to him exactly but I like to think he became a Santa Clause of the Wastelands.
I believe in a ad in sub way advertised two donuts for a $42 dollars, corset if I'm wrong, but it's safe to say $1 couldn't buy you thing prewar.

+KaOsSiCk most magazines are 40 odd dollars a piece so les say 2 dollars for a magazine now. $1now=$20pre war so (make it easy) 15/20 = a bit less than 1000 dollars
man fallout man when we play we meet radiated enemies crazies and savages we hardly see good people who survived the bombs but when we do and help them it feel good to do something right for a change

The scene when you give Arlen Marlene's holotape, to me, is one of if not THE saddest part or any game I've played. I tear up every time... Only manly man tears tho
It hits too close to home
I did the quest, slept for 3 days to get some more cash for water, went back to the slog, and I saw some BoS knights shooting some muties, but they got Arlen too, he was literally pumped full of lead.... Restarted the game, soon as I found the airship I went and killed everyone on it.
Loved it!! I haven't come across Arlen yet, I didn't know there was a somewhat happy ending to that storyline. (

Of everyone that has done videos of Arlen. You have done him the most justice. Not only allowing us to see the company he helped build, but to see and understand the source of his heartbreak. It only make's his story all that much more painfull to hear.

The holotape was profoundly sad. Arlen giving away all his things wanted to end it. He disappears from the Slog not long after that.
He doesn't end his life, he actually ends up becoming a wanderer and makes toys and leaves them around for kids, you can actually find a random buttercup in the wild as an encounter that has a note on it for a kid
Would be cool if in a future Fallout game we find a ghoulified Marlene looking for Arlen. I mean their is no way to be sure that they died in the apartment building.

Man... what a sad story. Poor Arlen. That has to be torture, besides the radiation having made you immortal and living with such a painful memory. At least here, he is given some small amount of peace.

When you're so in the zone that you don't notice the apocalypse until your scheduled lunch break.
Arlen as well as stories like West Everett Estates are those rare gems that make me pause and feel genuine sadness for these people. So many sad tales of the casualties of a war they had no part of. Then I resume the conquest of my lunatic protagonist as I slaughter every raider, gunner, and mutant I see.
I didn't retrieve the holotape... So I missed that scene. Jeez, heartwarming.

I remember like 7 years ago, I found this guy and finish his story, I kept his buttercup toy inside a special container in my home base sanctuary. Even when the Nuka World DLC was released and finished, I never attack this settlement because of him.
The Aliens in Fallout 3 were making the robot ponies into killing machines. Would be funny if the one on display (perfect condition) just came to life and started trying to kill the main character!
The only explanation I've seen for why some died and others mutated is because that's what happened. I believe that was from Obsidian, the original developers of the Fallout franchise to the best of my knowledge. I believe they elaborated but I can't remember, it was so long ago and I was just a kid back then.
6:20 This is the part of Wilson Atomatoys where the Total Hack Turret override program came in handy for me. I hacked the ceiling turrets and used that to do my dirty work on the remaining Super Mutants in the facility. As for Arlen Glass, pay a visit to the Slog.

Btw I think the bombs were a mixture of big and smaller bombs, this would explain the crater and lots of people surving the initial explosions later to be ghoulfied , I support my theory based on the fact that there is a variant of the mini nuke in a metal diamond sealed away in the glowing sea, as well as the fact that theres a giant crater where likely one of the giant bombs hit. the bombs would have been way more effective, carpeting nukes would have been very devastating .
The BOS also reveals they were used during the war , and are a version of the mini nuke used in the battle of anchorage , or vice versa.
***** Ghouls are people who became extremely radiated quickly. Super mutants are from the FEV (forced evoulution virus)
***** they're exclusively born from extreme exposure to radiation, I'm sure everyone in the game is riddled with some type of cancer, im sur
I never thought of Arlen until this video I thought he was a just a named NPC
On Arlen's survival; as I recall, the basic lore for Ghouls is that they're not "radiation zombies", they're humans who got exposed to both FEV - which was leaked into the atmosphere when various military bases brewing the stuff were hit - and radiation. They never really perfected/stabilized the stuff before the bombs hit, and the combination of random strain infection and radiation-induced mutation is why ghouls are so randomized. In general, it helps if they weren't directly exposed to the blast and instead were slowly inundated with radiation; Arlen got ghoulified because he lay down in the contaminated crater of his house, so passive radiation + FEV contamination + luck = Ghoul Arlen.

The holotape of the daughter was sad to say the least, I actually had to listen to that section twice.
I feel bad for Arlen, when I met him at the Slog and heard about his story. When he gave me that toy, I did not even scrap it. I purposely placed it in my Workshop so it would be safe. :3

It's not *that* hard to survive being in a city when a nuke goes off, especially if you suddenly acquire immunity to radiation. If you aren't in instant vaporization range, have a wall to block the fire ball and light flash, and don't get squished by anything, you've got a chance. That's what duck and cover was actually about, the desk wasn't going to block the nuke, but if you're far enough from ground zero, the desk might have protected you from the collapsing roof. Covering yourself wouldn't block the radiation, but it might prevent blindness and instant sunburn.

the first thing that came to mind was the Wilson meme
You forgot to get the parts from the locked room in the Factory. There is a box on the shelf marked as "Buttercup Toy Parts" I think. It's another "side quest" that Arlen gives you if you meet him at the Slog and haven't been to the HQ building.
It allows him to repair the broken Buttercup on the floor at The Slog. Which would kinda make more sense of him giving you a complete buttercup as reward for giving him the holotape.
Be careful though, as the box of parts is considered "junk" by the game, and it will scrap them for crafting if you're not careful.
