What are Mirelurks?- Fallout 4 Theories and Lore

  • There are a lot of strange and mysterious creatures in Fallout 4, each with their own secrets. But one of the strangest of all, due to their appearance and behaviour, our Mirelurks.
    Mirelurks:
    So we all know and hate these creatures. They come in about 4 varieties. Mirelurks, Mirelurk Hunters, Mirelurk Kings and Mirelurk Queens. There are also hatchlings, and the nukalurk variation. Today, I want to talk about the behavior and appearance of these creatures, as well as how sound plays a part in the species, and how the kings and queens use it. We shall also be talking about why they are different from the ones in Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
    I hope you enjoy the episode :)

    Playing in survival, the soft shell mirelurks that aren't buried and are guarding the eggs behave differently: rather than charging at you, they instead perform a territorial stance by shaking themselves with their claws up.

    There is a species of ants that have figured out how to hire another species of ant as mercenaries with food. It could be that the species collectively known as mirelurks are a group of species that share symbiotic relationships.
    The queens may be a different species entirely, used as siege-breakers on coastal forts before making them into large heavily fortified mirelurk nests.
    The Kings are probably employed for having a sonic ranged attack. Their job would be to stay back and blast anything while the more resilient crab-like mirelurks tank.
    The lobster-like 'lurks are probably used as, well, hunters. Their greater speed allows them to chase down weaker prey, but that's not well-suited for guarding the nests.
    The crab-like mirelurks are the most common, so I suspect that they formed these symbiotic relationships. If each of the other species work with the crabs, they probably learned to tolerate each others presence. Not that they would seek out each other's help, that's what the crabs do, but they don't attack each other for the same reason you don't attack your boss's other employees.
    The hatchlings are interesting, it seems only one of these species can lay eggs on land. Probably the crab-based mire-lurks.
    Alternate theories include:
    -A mirelurk goes into a cocoon at some point with metamorphic results, transforming into a different one with a different role like bees but more-so. Hatchlings become the crab-based mire-lurks, which transform into hunters as they grow older, which transform into full queens. The kings are a different species entirely, someone else suggested they were turtles with a thinner shell that acts more like a cuirass than plate-mail.
    -Zetans.
    -Aquatic FEV program for hunting Chinese submarines, like the deathclaw program but 10X worse. The fact the enclave was not aware of their origins can be explained easily by the group in charge saying it never happened because of embarrassment.
    -ZERG RUSH!

    My beliefe is mirelurk is just a general term for sea creatures in the fallout universe not one specific species. They are probably not even friendly to each other and feed on one another.

    • @agentfuse6416
      @agentfuse6416 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe, although that doesn't explain how despite their differences they look very similar to each other, as well as their close proximity. If they were different species, I'm sure we would have seen them somewhere in Fallout 3 or it's DLCs. (or it's just Bethesda trying to make cool new looks for Mirelurks)

    • @OmegaBlue-gb5bu
      @OmegaBlue-gb5bu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      One theory is they are three different species, but they have a form of symbiosis. The Mirelurk Hunters (which are lobsters not crabs) and the King (which is some kind of amphibian) help protect the nests and in return they get safety in numbers and have an easier time hunting food.

    • @thenthapple

  • @alexnicholasstoklosa2253

    I think the Mirelurks were actually a mix of different crustaceans possibly a result of the radiation screwing up the the process in which genes are picked maybe resulting in a crab and a lobster accidentally cross breeding.
    my second theory is that some chump threw a lobster and a crab and a couple different crustacean species together in a Fev vat. and they broke loose, they could possibly be similar to a beehive in the way they have different subspecies.

      Gat the Man In the same way people use the term "bug" as a generic term I can see that making sense. The average wastelander is hardly going to be a qualified biologist and cares little for specific species names. What they need is a name to refer to water dwelling mutant creatures so the name mirelurk came into use.

    i have a theory on how they breed. perhaps its something similar to anglerfish, where in a male is effectively fused with and absorbed by a female, constantly pumping them full of the means to fertilize eggs. such a melding would explain how queens seem to be a mix of the regular and hunter designs, and the size could be explained as bloat from near constant egg production or perhaps mass from the absorbed partner, or a mix of both.

      @charlesramirez587 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the Super mutants in Boston are indeed more organised than their DC cousins. Yet the most brutish and largest are the DC variant most likely due to that strand of FEV. The commonwealth muties are the weakest of the super mutants while not being as organised as the masters army they might be more intelligent. though i doubt it since Super-mutants in the commonwealth are more prone to aggression than their western counterparts.

    • @corydorton2660
      @corydorton2660 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Especially my but then that brings up other questions we know the Institute did have a FVE at their disposal so the super mutants that are in the Commonwealth do have a FVE in their bloodstream so their lack of intelligence and overall growth is not because they don't have a FVE they do have FVE in their system so the better question is why are they less intelligent and organized than the DC

    if you ask me the mirelurks are have a higharchy like a bee the male's are the common ones we see all trough out the commonwealth the females are the hunters and inherit the acid for hunting and 1 pair of their claws became a extra pair legs for extra mobility and speed. the kings are mutated frogs like you said. the queen is like with bees only born once a while and is the only one able to mate and lay eggs. and i must say because of the Amphibious nature the eggs get laid in the water where the males fertilize them and the kings steal them to create a herd because of this i also believe the egg on the altar is one that will become a mirelurk queen.

    I think the entire mirelurk family is all one big clusterfuck of symbiotic life. It's just advantageous for them all to live together. I think queens may be related to mirelurks and lay the eggs or work as giant oversized nannies in return for food. Hunters get the food. Normal Mirelurks protect the homestead and kings kinda just hang on there. Not doing much but not getting in the way either and is clearly helpful in protecting the homestead so the rest of the mirelurks have no reason to complain.

    The mirelurk kings look more like mutated Lion fish, and Lion fish are an invasive species in the US. I also think their sonic attack is a sort of roar and their ability to cloak is a homage to the stalker nature of lions. Plus lions are seen as the kings of the wild, hence the name Mirelurk kings. I think the normal Mirelurks can lay eggs. They can be male or female, reproduce through sexual reproduction, with fertilization before the eggs are laid. The Queen is a seperate, relaited species with a symbiotic relationship. The small lurks feed the Queen and she protects the nest. The Queen does not have the same role as in other species. She is beneficial, but not necessary. The Queens can reproduce somehow, but do so rarely. Considering how there is one in both the Castle and Spectacle Island, that could be their breeding ground. Kings, if they are descended from frogs, probably lay eggs underground that we don't see.

    Might I suggest that the mirelurk queens are similar to bee queens and the mirelurks operate in the colony like format. Bee queens undergo a physical transformation increasing their size and appearance when compared to regular female bees. Regular mirelurks are sterile females operating around a queen gathering food and protecting eggs. Male mirelurks are perhaps never seen as they are non-combatants that live with the queen underground living solely to breed with her. While mirelurk hunters and kings, as is suggested, are different species just given the same name.

    I've been operating under the assumption that they are 3 different species living in a mutual-hive situation. The kings are clearly not at all crustaceans, possibly derived from a fusion of mudskipper and turtle. But their sonic attacks strongly resemble the Mesmetron attacks in FO3. If their sonic abilities allow them to hypnotize regular mirelurks and rule them, like a king, then they would be living in symbiosis with the mirelurks as part of their species hunting/survival strategy, like a pilot fish to a shark or a hornbill to a rhino. The hunters are CLEARLY based on crawfish (come on down to Louisiana, we'll show you up close how those pointed head-structures work, before teaching you how to eat them) but again it's a matter of symbiosis. The hunters are adopted into the mirelurk nests and possibly controlled via pheromones or sonic manipulation (we know sound can affect them, thank you Spectacle Island and that one vault in 3 screwing around with sonic mind control), becoming jannisaries for the mirelurks, hunting on their behalf.

    a few random thoughts, the creation of mirelurks could have been another experiment at Big MT that was not talked about in the fallout new vegas dlc, another possibility is that the eggs function somewhat loosely like the eggs of bee's with certain eggs hatching forth certain varieties of mirelurks, (I am not hugely knowledgeableabout insects), and lastly it is possible that the term mirelurk is not meant for a creature but for a new subspecies of similar entities. as always I love your videos, hope to see more of them.

    I think I know what the Mirelurk King is. The face and color remind me of an Aquatic Iguana. The radioactive pollution in the water Prewar (if I understood you correctly) may have mutated a migrated population of Aquatic Iguana that somehow spread throughout the coasts of the US. This may explain Iguana on a Stick, an item from the game. It's possible the US was harvesting the population of mutated Aquatic Iguanas. After the war, the Iguanas changed into the shitlords we know and love today. Gills to hunt underwater and ambush people above, spinal fins for better handling in the water, sonic pulse for better hunting, and partial invisibility to help with ambushing prey. How these evolution happened, radiation and FEV are the answer-alls of the games. The communications with the Horseshoe Crabs, the Lobsters, and the mutant hybrid bullshit crab known as queens were most likely an adaptation for the specie's survival.
    Meant to say Marine rather than Aquatic. Hopefully this helps you in further videos.

    Although I think im just pull on straws but I think the reason why the Mirelurks in 3 and 4 are different may have to depend on the location. My theory is that since the Bombs fell and the areas that held the F.E.V mixed in the atmosphere (Although it would be minute doses if anything) which caused most of the animals to mutate and depending on how much radiation/F.E.V was stewing around it would effect the evolution of the wildlife. As the Yao Guai in Fallout 4 are completely bald (unless im mistaken) but are much larger than most other Yao Guai (Except the ones in Zion Canyon). Possibly due to the glowing sea's constant radiation and frequent radiation storms its possible it forced the Mirelurks to evolve even further than their counterparts up in DC. But then again this is just theory.

    the presence of scales, claws and bony fins makes me think the kings came from reptiles who re-adapted to aquatic life. they may not be mutants but pre-war genetic experiments like the deathclaw, perhaps a frog/chameleon splice. This would explain their ability to camouflage.

  • @AceCrasher24
    @AceCrasher24 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kings as frogs, they look more like snapping turtles with an adaptation to hunt.
    Their head looks like a snapping turtle and they look scaly but also fleshy in patches because they evolved out of a shell.
    The larger species of snapping turtles also have razor sharp claws and a razor sharp beak. And you can see these on the Kings.
    If there was a frog in fallout, would most likely be really strong, poisonous or a squishy yet sneaky predator.
    Also, some ant species can cross breed. They only use specific dna strands to reproduce.

    I'm of the opinion that the mirelurks actually didn't necessarily all evolve from crabs but instead are a clear example of Carcinisation where crustaceans seem to really like re-evolving into crabs. I think the mirelurks are all the same species, aside from the king, and the hunter is the male, who during mating seasons will carry a normal mirelurk on it's back, after which the hunter will be consumed by the normal mirelurk, which will then transition into becoming a queen. The reason we don't see very many queens I'd supposed is because the hunter mirelurks are more often killed before successful reproduction, and mirelurks have adapted to closely guard eggs as an adaptation to cope with this. Mirelurk kings are, in my opinion, are almost certainly a symbiotically associated species, and only associate with Mirelurks to avoid the horrors of the depths, and more frequently venture into the water for sustenance, hence their more fish-like appearance. I'd suppose they evolved from seals or sea lions, and their gill-like things are not actually gills but are actually just skin folds.

  • @WellxamGamer
    @WellxamGamer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm also not a marine biologist, but I do know that Amniotic eggs have to be fertilized before they are laid for a baby to come out of said egg, so unless they were somehow laid without the shell and the fertilization somehow initiates the formation of the shell somehow... there has to be some kind of internal fertilization.
