I‘d say Codsworth would be chaotic good character. He has the best of intentions but still flames people alive and rebells against his own programming from time to time
Also when we first meet Ada she‘s a robot filled with most rage her programming would allow her to feel with plans to enact revenge and is absolutely internally pissed when we don’t kill the mechanist
she also doesn’t give a shit if we absolutely eradicate the half of the commonwealth you cannot be sayin‘ she‘s on the same level as curie
Codsworth is also totally chill with cannibalism and actually has some funny lines when you do

@@T.J.Marcusstrong follows the principles of super mutants. The super mutants don't own things and share with there brother's. They have a hierarchy based on strength and respect each other as long as they follow the principles.

He also likes when you help other people if i'm correct, i can't renember well but you could farm friendship with him by doing minutemen quests.

Piper is chaotic good. Piper has this tendency to shot first ask questions later. She has gotten me in so many gun fights trying to sneak pass an enemy I just didn't want to deal with and then comes in ole Pipper with guns a-blazing!

Her stories are also written in a very provocative way. Like she is trying to get a fight going. Yes she wants people to wake-up about the Institute, but she fans the flames of paranoia instead of trying to find a solution. I would move her to chaotic good.

I'd argue putting Hancock in Lawful Neutral or even Chaotic Good because he likes it when you help people as well as stealing from/hurting bad/corrupt people, meaning he does have good morals

@@T.J.Marcus Not really random. He saw a man threatening a visitor, he decided to tell him what he thinks about causing trouble to strangers. It's just his thoughts on that involve stabbing the troublemaker.
The rest of the conversations you have with Hancock put him as chaotic good in my book. He tries his best to do good, but it doesn't always work out like he plans. I figured the stabing was a last straw kind of thing. But I'm very biased. Hancock is my go-to romance.
@@T.J.Marcusthe stabbin seems random at first, but when you look into it, it really isn’t. finn seems to have a history of extortion, especially those new to goodneighbour. he also threatens hancock in some sorta way, sayin that if he lets newcomers “walk all over him”, he won’t be mayor for much longer.
I feel like perhaps Piper should lean more towards the Chaotic side of the chart: there's a strong anti-authoritarian streak to her character, to the point where Diamond City Security have nicknamed the lockup "The Piper Suite". She also *really* likes it when you lockpick your way into places you're not supposed to be. She's more Robin Hood than Batman.
MacCready might be more evil, when you find someone in a random encounter needing a cure from radiation he says he wouldn’t have bothered.
Sounds more selfish than evil. Macready will steal and lie but he won’t murder innocent people without provocation

Sounds like he is a survivalist not evil. I always saw MacCready as True Neutral because he seen many people die and knows death is there all around him. Life in Fallout is a live or die. He knows this, he lives this. He shall help if it helps him, it doesnt matter if other is good or bad. He is there to survive. But what really makes him true neutral, he only kills if he is required to do such. He isnt going to kill anyone unless they force his hand. Only a true neutral would react like this.
When you said Ada not knowing about the commonwealth is wrong and should not be included with curie because, yes curie hasn’t seen the commonwealth so it would make sense that she needs to embark with you but Ada has seen the commonwealth because she was in a caravan that travels throughout the commonwealth and has probably defended her self from raiders robots etc so she would know what it is like.
Strong actually likes when people work together and he disapproves stealing.
I wouldn't call him good but chsotic evil is a bit much

@@_NIKOS9_NIKOS He likes all displays of strength, and sees stealing as cowardice. I still see him as chaotic evil but that is so subjective to my view of who is good and bad.
I understand why you would consider Strong to be Chaotic Evil but I think he fits more for Neutral Evil, he has some rules of his own, they're just super mutant rules, which are mostly might makes right and stealing bad, sharing good. So basically a communist barbarian, which true Americans like Sergeant RL3 would find detestable!
Everything else, though, I think your choice in placement checks out.
Maybe Dogmeat could be lawful Neutral like Danse, since you (the Sole Survivor) are basically Dogmeat's BOS, whatever Dogmeat does is in service to you, and all the ends justify the means. I'm indirectly saying Danse (And by extension X6-88) is a dog for whom he serves.
I’d have strong as chaotic neutral. He has no malice in his actions and evil intentional. Is a lion evil for eating a gazelle? Or for killing a lion challenging him?
I'd say Hancock does have better morals than some of the other Chaotic companions, one of his voice lines being "We help those who need help, and hurt those who need to be hurt." Loose definition, but he definitely prefers to be helpful to those deserving of it. Those who don't deal in shady businesses.
I hate to go all Jedi, but from his point of view, Strong is both good and principled.
I see it slightly, differently with Lawful being about structure, whilst Chaotic hates structure. Good meanwhile is about beauty, whilst Evil enjoys vandalising the world.
On that scale, Cait and Hancock both strike me more as Neutral Evil, with Cait maybe even being Chaotic Evil.

Just to add to Nick, while he currently does things for cash, he tells you about when he first started he didn't even think to ask for payment, he was just happy to be treated like a person. He has no preferred faction coz at the end of the day, Nick stands for the people.
Danse and X6-88 are definitely lawful. Where they go on the good/evil axis depends on what you think of the Brotherhood and Institute respectively; if you hate the Brotherhood more than you hate the Institute I can see a case for switching their positions.
To me, Dogmeat is lawful neutral instead of true neutral. His guiding principle is being loyal to the player and following commands without question.

It's a fun system and applies well to other worlds.
I like how you mention in the video that the deeper you dig into a character, the more you can argue for them being almost anywhere on the alignment.
My D&D group and I have argued over Hancock a lot. Arguments have been made for him to be aligned as chaotic good, lawful good, chaotic neutral, and lawful evil. I can see an argument for all of them except lawful evil personally.
He does have governing moral principles as simple/few as they may be. But he also expresses that he prefers to follow his gut and act on impulse. And he values freedom of choice in life.
Where would you put the faction leaders like Father and Elder Maxin?

Id hardly call the bos or Maxwell evil, neutral at worst. The only one from the bos id call evil would be father Elijah, tho I'm biased since he's my least favorite character in the franchise besides Lucy.
@@T.J.MarcusI'd go lawful evil for both, mostly because Max isn't willing to give people who have shown they ARE PEOPLE a chance. He had the chillest, nicest BoS leader save his life and went kind of crazy with the power at such a young age.

I think Danse is 100% a lawful evil. He'll do anything the Brotherhood wants, slaughtering mutants, ghouls or synths, no matter if they are hostile. The Brotherhood will forcefully take over farms and settlements. They'll nuke an entire part of town if their enemy is located there. They'll wipe out the Railroad, killing humans who are sympathetic to synths. If they could build and use a Death Star to defeat their enemies, they would, and Danse would go along with it.
Danse is absolutely willing to do terrible things if the Brotherhood orders it. He's a lawful evil.
But sometimes the Brotherhood asks him to do good things 👼
I agree, it stings a little but Danse is definitely lawful evil leaning neutral. He has good ideals but his willingness to go along with any order no matter how evil it is pushes him over the edge for me. Treating synths like shit-and often outright killing them-stealing food from starving settlers, hostility towards non-feral ghouls, and just generally treating non-brotherhood peeps like shit aren’t things someone can be totally on board with and still be considered neutral to me. Danse himself treats your ghoul and synth companions with disdain and hatred, he just isn’t the best dude morally speaking, even if he is definitely very principled.
Pfft. Ada is an absolute chaos machine and goes along with anything you do. Definitely not the same as Curie.
Yeah, I am realizing I might have based her alignment on how I lead her (which was good neutral). There were definitely other paths for her so I agree she is neutral but she could have been all 3 neutral spaces.
Like you said, Cait doesn't like it if you sell little Billy into slavery, but she likes it if you tell him that his parents are probably dead. When you do, Cait basically tells Billy to get used to life's disappointments.

On every play through, I will complete every quest in the game that I can except “Benign Intervention”. I absolutely depend on Cait’s “fuck them all” attitude in order to accomplish certain tasks in the game without worrying about upsetting someone. Yeah, yeah I could also use Dogmeat but I enjoy Cait’s banter.
I’d say strong isn’t exactly evil, he likes it when you help settlements, and he doesn’t like raiders or slavery because they harm human society, his principles are different than ours, and they come across as chaotic at least to us, but he’s not ruthlessly evil like the other super mutants
Which is why he was locked up with Rex.
He dosen’t like it when you aren’t nice because it gets you further from finding the milk of human kindness

@@T.J.Marcus As far as the video games go, I've only played Dawn of War, Fire Warrior and Space Marine, but I used to be VERY heavy into the 40k tabletop before my dad passed in 2020. I also keep up with Arch and Luetin for lore since I quit playing the tabletop.
One thing to add about Strong, and I don't know if this affects his placement on the alignment chart in any way, but when you actively agree to help settlements, he likes it when you do that.

Good list. Ada doesn't seem to care what actions the sole survivor takes or really have lot of sense of self so I might list her as neutral
I would call Piper Chaotic Good. She is willing to not follow the law, especially if she sees the law as detrimental. She is not above lying to get what she wants. She still only wants to do good.

I did something like this in the fallout 4 subreddit, X6-88 was lawful evil on mine too but a lot of people were arguing about him being neutral evil, hadnt really thought about ADA being neutral good, i put her in true neutral as she's indifferent to the player's actions, good and bad, like dogmeat, but yours is better considering that she does have that set of morals i hadnt taken into account

MacCready felt hard to place to me, because he's only in the Commonwealth to look for a cure for his kid, which seems good. But thinking of this from a selfish v selfless streak, that's the most selfless thing, and is even a little still "for *my* kin" right? He's opposed to Gunners, for selfish reasons. Wants to end those two, because they're after him. The fastest way to rush affinity with him is to pick owned locks.
Anyway, maybe he should fit to the evil end of the spectrum, is I guess my thought to express.
@@davidcollinsjr4288 he does so much good and bad that I thought neutral was the only proper place. However, a sign of a good character is being hard to place because real people aren’t black and white.
Only change I'd make is Ada being true Neutral. Other than hunting the Mechanist, she has zero capacity for moral judgement - like Dogmeat. In the game, reflected by not using affinity in any way. Curie remains neutral good though - her programmed medical-care duties give her a 'healer' aura - her only real flaw is naivety. Unlike Codsworth, she hasn't had 210 years outside to learn 'who to trust and who to kill' - hence she back the Brotherhood of Steel despite their hostility to synths and 'peace only through war' mentality.
Agree with Strong, though. Whilst he does sometimes show appreciation of 'like helping like', he only believes humans should co-operate in order to further their ability to kill, not for any higher purpose.

I only had one disagreement with you, X6-88. On the basis that IF we had an interesting institute ending, the sole survivor could change his orders to do good. I just think he's the counter beat to dance, but they're both neutral to me.
I feel like lawful and chaotic also apply to world laws/ethics as well. Batman has his own code, but in his universe he’s a controversial character because as much good as he does, he’s still breaking the law.
No, if Preston Garvey is Lawful Good because he follows a set of principles then Paladin Danes should also be Lawful Good, as he believes the Brotherhood of Steel to be morally correct.
That depends on your definition of "good". I consider the minutemen "good" and the BoS "neutral". Feel free to make your own based on your own principles because all of this is subjective and nobody is really wrong.

As for this list, I agree with just a few changes. Piper CG, she's too much a loose cannon. Strong is more Neutral or lawful evil, as stated in the comments below, he's got his pown morals, wierd as they are. Ada, TN. Outside her revenge quest she has no care what you do. And even the revenge is easily altered by you explaining what the Mechanist was trying to do.

Curie, although speaking with a French accent, is not “French speaking”, as you state. Unless I am mistaken Curie never actually speaks French in the game. Correct me if I’m wrong.

100% agree. This video is my perspective. If someone thinks the Institute is good, then X6-88 goes from lawful evil to lawful good.
Piper, curie, valentine, preston, danse, deacon and codsworth are good. Macready, dog meat, hancock and cait are neutral. Strong and x688 are evil

Maxson was trained by her, so upon learning she was a synth, began a campaign to hunt the institute. Hence, the anger about Danse being a synth. Deacon has been to capital wasteland, is the correct age of the game. And has had extensive surgeries. "I put myself under the knife every year or two."

Batman is Chaotic Good. He ignors laws and only follows his own morals. Like V from V for Vendetta. Batman would never surrender to the police if they wanted (seriously) to arrest him. Superman would be considered Lawful Good. As he has surrendered to police when they called for his arrest.

I think Danse and X6 should be together in lawful evil. It's kind of a double standard to say the Institute is evil but not Maxon's BOS. While the Institute are mad scientists rivaled only by Big MT, the BOS in Fallout 4 are a bunch of raiders in power armor, not to mention they actively work towards ghoul/super mutant genocide.

while these rankings would make sense for the real world (mostly) it seems you kind of forgot that you're ranking fallout characters, and that's a completely different world with a completely different set of rules, doing drugs in a world where they actually literally give you superpowers doesn't suddenly make you go from lawful to chaotic, especially when they're not even illegal, would be the equivalent of saying that smoking cigarettes makes you evil

I never considered the Institute to be "evil."
If anything, I find them to be misguided "good."
They want to fix the Commonwealth, but they will do it while ignoring the pain of said Commonwealth. I don't consider that evil, persé
Ehh they’re definitely evil, even if their stated intentions are otherwise. I think “Well-Intentioned Extremists” to borrow from TV Tropes is about as generous as you could get with them. They kidnap and replace people, unleashed super mutants into the commonwealth, and generally do literally nothing to help out while spreading fear and hate among the people. Even if their stated goals are to “help” humanity, in practice they’re not much better than the Enclave.
The institute is way too detached from the commonwealth-they live *underground* for gods sake-and that detachment coupled with the dehumanization of anyone outside those walls has led them down a path of cut and dry evil; even if they purport to do good. Very few evil people/organizations openly know and think and state they do evil.
the road to hell is paved with good intentions. the institute is almost entirely evil in their actions, regardless of how they may try to justify them

In my first playthrough, I picked them, and out of the Railroad, BoS or the Institute I prefer the Institute as the lesser of 3 evils...
After all, if you stick with them, YOU get to decide how they continue. You don't get that in the railroad or BoS.

Kind of a weird game to use this ancient DND compass on. None of these caricatures do ANYTHING unless the player interacts with them, and they are written to generally be as accommodating as possible. What they do or dont believe is meaningless because YOU do all the work.

And I’m basing my decisions largely on how they act when you do things. Many of these characters will complain if you do something they disagree with. Do it enough times and they’ll leave you.
in all sincerity it doesn't interest me much, anyway I only do the Deacon, Valentine, Maccready, Danse quests and if someone sends me to a certain place, even Cait's quest, the others don't interest me and then I travel exclusively in the company of Deacon.
and as far as I'm concerned the dog doesn't exist.
