That's good that you recognise that all lives matter. Hopefuly you have clocked that "black lives matter" doesn't stipulate that white english, indonesian, or Bolivian lives don't.
John is right. There was never an implication that white lives don't matter. Of course all lives matter but the focus on black lives is an attempt to put an end to the horrific racism they have suffered for centuries. With regards to the lockdown, nobody wanted a lockdown but what was the alternative? Allow a virus that we knew little about at the time cut through society and kill far more people then it actually did? In Ireland we opened things up in Christmas 2020 and it was a disastrous mistake. There is no such thing as freedom. Everyday we sacrifice certain freedoms to protect the freedom of someone else - it's a two way contract. For example, I keep my distance during a pandemic to protect a more vulnerable persons freedom not to be infected and potentially die from covid.
How can anyone honestly think 'Black Lives Matter' means that nobody of other races matters? It OBVIOUSLY doesn't mean that, 'Black Lives Matter' is a slogan that means "Enough is enough, black people keep getting killed by police (particularly in America), we matter as much as everyone else". That's OBVIOUSLY what it means. Without lockdowns the NHS would have been screwed, we'd have had mass graves being dug in every major city to deal with all the dead, YOU or someone in your family would probably have died from it or been stuck in bed for weeks on end struggling to breathe. That's because with people just going about their business as usual transmission would have been far faster, and we'd all be getting exposed to higher doses of it and thus more likely to get very ill. We lack discipline in this country because we'd never had to deal with this sort of contagious disease in living memory, whereas in South East Asia where they have more frequently been exposed to such outbreaks (like SARS) they just accept the situation adn get on with it. The government didn't want to do it, it is obviously not going to be a vote winner and was massively costly for the government and the economy as a whole, indeed Johnson et all tried to take their foot off the brakes too soon and got burned by surges in hospitilisations at times, forcing them to reintroduce lockdowns.

Matt was right about lockdowns. Countries that didn't enforce lockdowns suffered similar excess deaths at the time, but now they are doing better than countries that locked down.

Funny thing was a guy I know as a social butterfly (pusher) to rich people in Chester bars turns up with Barnseys new mrs at the bar I’m bouncing at and I said to him what you doing with her.

people seem to misinterpret the term black lives matter or rather use it to promote various agendas. Of course we are aware that all lives matter, but as a society certain lives are more disenfranchised than others therefore by highlighting that black lives matter does not equate to be implying that black lives matter more than others it is just saying they also matter.
so why don't people like john barnes say all lives matter, he's lucky he wasn't a black man in the deep south in the 30's & 40's or a jew in the last war, he'd have known true racism then not the watered down stuff of now, this isn't america, as samuel l jackson said "they've had interratial dating in the uk for over 100 years, there might be racists in this country but it isn't a racist country, if he wants to see racism go to africa and see how many white farmers have had their land taken of them and how that has impacted the blacks through lack of food.

I have enormous respect for John Barnes (am a LFC fan too), but to say blindly that lockdowns and mandatory jabs "has to happen", is being naïve, and somewhat ignorant.
The jabs weren't mandatory, though it was a bloody good idea for the vast majority of people to have them. I say that even though my own mother had a bit of a negative reaction to one of them. They did need to happen because the NHS would have been overwhelmed, especially as more NHS staff would have been catching it and so further reducing the capacity of the NHS to treat anyone for Covid or owt else.

Why wouldn't he feel the same, the country has recovered quite well. We fared better than Europe during the height of the pandemic, in part thanks to getting vaccines out faster (plus the virus hit hard on the continent first, so we got a preview of what was coming if we didn't get lockdowns in place pronto).

Good chat but two points. Many people did raise the issues with Qatar when the bid went it and then when announced. This criticism just ramped up at the end because of the first half of this conversation; the hypocrisy of identity politics obsessives. This diverted serious conversation about the issues and what could be done to ensure any concerns were dealt with coherently, and this is because high profile people wanted to engage in performanc£.
The Commonwealth comparison is flawed. Countries can leave it, or do not need to attend events. They are also free to speak out and not face penalty. It also raises the profile for athletes of nations who don't often get to compete at higher levels. Britain also doesn't hide its failures, even if it is clearly still embarrassed about them and struggles to stand up and say, 'the population today doesnt represent the empire of old.'

Surely all lives matter.
I've often thought the first one to mention colour in a conversation, is usually the one with the issue. I'm open to being wrong, but if. There were MOWO awards, everyone would go mental, take people as you find them irrespective of colour or nationality. Life can be tough enough, why make it more problematic by hating people you don't even know.
