    I remember a game at Highbury in the early 90s when we played Southampton. It wasn’t a goal that Le Tissier scored that sticks in my mind ... he hit this precision pass of about 50 yards which remained about a foot off the ground the whole way until it reached his teammate. There was an audible gasp from the crowd. Magnificent player.

  • @kinggimped

    I always thought Le Tissier was criminally underrated. Just used to score these incredible goals for fun. Imagine if he'd played for a team with better service. Not a hint of arrogance about him, no great pace or power... and yet he'd go past defenders like they weren't even there and then pull off these majestic finishes. Casual as you like. I grew up watching him play and was just in awe of his skill and how cool he was under pressure. Every time he'd score, there'd just be a feeling of "how the hell did he just do that?", always like it was nothing. Legend. Thanks for the compilation.

    For the record I am from Southampton and has watched LeTiss many times, I was watching a Maradona best 20 video and after 5 clips I thought, Matty has done better than this and came back to re-watch these again. It is amazing that some players are known worldwide (Maradona, Messi etc) and yet from a small town on the south coast of England there was Matt, who on his day could match those players (without world class players around him).

    • @SuperAttitudeera
      @SuperAttitudeera ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Before Maradona came to Napoli, the club barely avoided relegation. With him they won the scudetto ahead of Juventus, Milan, Inter, Lazio, Roma etc. I don't remember Le Tissier doing the same with Southampton, so no he isn't even close to Maradona. Plus, Maradona won the 86 WC with a mediocre team that relied just on him so there is a reason why he is so valued and highly regarded.

    • @Kalascos
      @Kalascos ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@SuperAttitudeera Le Tissier pretty much single-handedly kept Southampton in the English top-tier league for like 15 seasons. I'm not going to say anything against Maradona, he was one of the all-time greats, but the question is was Le Tissier up there? I'd say yes. Le Tissier was the best English player of his generation (far better than Gascoigne who was the one who got all the plaudits) and not only that, he was up there with the greatest non-English talents of his generation - Rivaldo, Ronaldo (Brazilian), Baggio, Hagi, Stoichkov, Zidane etc. He was simply phenomenal. I'm not going to argue he was better than those players but he was definitely up there in terms of ability with the greatest players in what was arguably the greatest ever generation of footballers. For me he's among the top-20 players of my lifetime and is honestly the only English player I would place in that top-20.

    In the 90's, there was a show called "Petica" (literally "Fiver" - referring to top 5 European leagues) that was aired every Monday in prime time on second channel of Croatian TV.
    Basically, it was a football show with highlights from all matches played that week in Premiership, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga, that didn't just offer highlights from most attractive matches, but also kept emphasis on "smaller" clubs. Best Croatian players and coaches at the time were guest pundits and every example of superior skill was highly praised, no matter how "small" the club was and no matter hoe "anonimous" the player was.
    Thanks to this show, we discovered (among other greats of the time) Matt LeTissier, who was not that well known to non-English football fans, as Southampton rarely or never played European matches. But dear lord, what a phenomenal player he was! I can't recall a single one of his goals that wasn't brilliant, and the efortless way in which he broke defender's ankles before "removing the spider web" (Croatian slang for putting the ball into upper corner of the goal) was a thing of beauty. I will never understand why this guy never played for English national team - he was bloody brilliant and paired with another brilliant English midfielder that was Gazza, he would've been an absolute menace!
    This is something I miss dearly in today's football - guys like LeTissier, Dario Hübner (Brescia, Piacenza) or Martin Max (Munchen 1860), guys that didn't give a shit about fame or playing for big clubs, but kept small clubs above the surface instead, with their superiror skill and scoring ability.

    Matty is a legend. Coming from a little Island he was a massive fish in a tiny bowl at Saints and he knew it. He just didnt give a shit because he didnt need to try. Casual and cool. So laid back he looked like he was taking the piss. He was just lethal and that right foot was one of the very best, ever, yet he could still crack in worldies with his left. Alongside his teak tough mate and minder, Franny Benali, Saints punched way above their weight in the 90's. Cheers Matty!

    One of the greatest and most underrated English players. He could win World Cup 1998 if he didn't misd the chance for playing for France. He combined all footbal characteristics of an amazing forward:dribbling, touch and technique, shoots which schocked all Britain. But playing for Southampton will never bring you to fame and a trace in the history of a football

      Houllier spoke to Le Tissier's father to try to convince him to play for France. It would've taken some doing as he wasn't eligible.

    Most gifted player I ever saw. I include Pele, Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo in that. He never reached their heights because he was a little lazy in his ability. If any of the 4 I mentioned had scored the goals he scored they'd be talked about as the greatest ever goals. Astonishing how simple he made the incredible look.

      Don't think u could do things like this if he's lazy the main reason he couldn't go higher is because he had some conterversy with the manager Glenn hoddle

    I don’t know much about soccer - never cared much - but if ever i was in a room and heard that name leTissier - I’d stop and watch and every time I did - the ball went in the net….
    Always this chap.
    I never understood why he wasn’t a major international star…
    He was humble, I am told - … but that’s even a better reason to put him out there surely? An example of a hero to kids.
    I still don’t know why.
    He was the best kicker of a ball I ever saw….
    Fucking genius.

    Gracias Barbosa por hacer conocer a publico en general de la dimension de los verdaderos cracks del futbol mundial que muchas veces por cosas del destino no llegan a la cuspide como el gran Magico gonzales. Ver jugar a Le tissier era una cosa descomunal..creo que esta casi a la misma altura de Ronaldo nazario o Dennis bergkamp. Creo que otro gran futbolista que era increible de ver jugar y le falto fortuna fue el gran Roy makaay.
