    Ugh. I can't tell you the amount of time that I order something gluten free, I eat it, the for the next few days I'm so sick I can't get out of bed. Its so annoying how people think that its fine to ignore requests for food allergies.

I was sick for a few days and I have a good feeling the didnt give me the GF crust

    • @crazyafrobaby2013
      @crazyafrobaby2013 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      crazywaffleking people might just not like the way wheat makes them feel bloated. I dunno why but whenever I have bread or stuff like that it makes me get stomach pains and bloating. But naturally because of my cultural background we eat lots of carbs and dishes that don't involve wheat anyways so being "gluten free" for me isn't hard when cooking my own food. It's just my normal diet 😂

      Neptune .png Going gluten free helped so much with my chronic pain. I also suffer from fibromyalgia but since going gluten free, adding in collagen protein, and increasing my vitamin D my symptoms from pain has completely gone away. My knees never hurt and my fingers don’t get tight anymore. I went gluten free a year ago and it helped so much. I’ve only recently added collagen but I do feel it has helped as well. Give it a try and see how it goes. Also, get your vitamin D levels checked. Fibromyalgia and vitamin D Deficiency have similar symptoms and some people often get misdiagnosed.

      Unfortunately, many people who have a gluten intolerance, also suffer from other intolerances. I cannot have gluten, nor can I have corn. Most gluten free products replace wheat with corn, so most of the General Mills products are off limits for me. I mostly rely on whole foods that are naturally gluten free, such as fruits and vegetables.

    As someone with Celiac, I honestly don't think non-sensitive people need to eat gluten free. For someone with out Celiac Disease or gluten sensitivity, I don't believe there is any health benefit to avoiding gluten. I think regular people feel better when they do gluten free because they are cutting out a lot of junk and highly processed foods. Just my 2 cents.

    • @mariella3172

      I have a friend that developed gluten sensitivity in his teens and he's pretty pissed about all these non-sensitive or not celiac going gluten free because the prices of the products that made his life a little less miserable spiked and he can't afford them anymore. When I hear about non sensitive people going gluten free I always think of poor Fabio lashing out because he can't afford his little sweet treats anymore. He got really grumpy when the prices doubled up in the span of six months.

    I've had a gluten allergy since I was 7. I did kind of laugh at the gf diet trend, but it has made finding food a LOT easier. When I was little, I pretty much lived off of French fires and Ensure (the nutritional drink for seniors) any time we went on a road trip. While not everyone needs to cut it out, having the kind of options that are on the market now makes things SO MUCH EASIER for those of us who have allergies.

      I think the gluten and other fad diet take overs have made people see it as not as serious of an issue too. I'm lactose intolerant and I've had people not give me dairy free drink and meals just thinking I was doing it for a fad diet reason. I have a friend with Celiac's that has experienced similar situations. I'm all for the fad diet pushing company's to make dairy/gluten free options, mostly because I can enjoy ice cream and Mac and cheese again. I just wish people understood that when I say I have an allerdy it means that I could end up hospitalized, even though mine isn't as serious.

      Yes! Chic-Fil-A has now become my fav fast food chain because they are working so hard to give GF options. Kelsey Jones oh my gosh yes! Eating out is SO MUCH EASIER than it used to be. When I was 10, my Dad decided we were going to Olive Garden for his birthday, and since I couldn't eat anything there, my mom brought cooked gf pasta in a bag and asked the waiter if they could just put it in a bowl and put sauce on it. We have come so far and it is so great.

    Ok. I'm gluten free because I have tourettes syndrome. I did some research and it said giving up gluten can help. I tried going gluten free and it drastically helped me with my tics. (not all the way better obviously) If any of you have tourettes, try giving up allergens, or as I did, gluten. I am not celiac, but I do have a reason to go gluten free. If you don't have a reason, just don't do it.

    It's likely that you felt a lot better from cutting out a lot of processed foods that may have also been quite high in salt too. I'm gluten free due to an intolerance and I feel tons better without it (I get lethargic, bloated, gassy, mouth ulcers, brain fog, heavier and more painful periods, anaemia, rundown with colds and stuff) but I also still feel better when I'm not eating gluten free breads/bagels/pretzels than I do when I am eating those alternatives, I assume simply because they are processed and often salty foods.

    • @isla_usa708
      @isla_usa708 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alice Ash I was AIP Paleo before reintroducing foods to see what I could tolerate. It helped a lot with my autoimmune issues as there are lots of diet related things that would give me brain fog, or inflammation related pain. If I eat corn or soy products my body starts rejecting all food. I definitely agree with avoiding processed foods, unless you get raw ingredients most things these days have so many additives that you wouldn't recognize them individually as something edible. However, salt is essential for me!

    • @hatorigirl1202
      @hatorigirl1202 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alice Ash I think it might also be related to carbs in general. Gluten alternatives with a lot of carbs will still act like carbs, which can mean feeling bloated and bogged down. carbs take longer for our bodies to break down into a form of fuel the body can use. It's been shown that carb heavy foods are more likely to make you gain weight than foods high in fat because it's harder to break down. Several diets out there have some element that lowers carb intake, and people see results, but it's not necessarily the diet itself, it's the lowered carb intake.

    With a sister who is gluten intolerant, we have found it hard to find food especially when eating out in the UK where we are from but also abroad, as gluten and wheat is in so many foods unnecessarily. On our travels to the States, LA (and California in general) was one of the hardest places to find good gluten free food and not be looked at weirdly like Michelle experienced. We found that actually the east coast was better and there was more available. Thank you Michelle for highlighting in this video that some people generally have to avoid gluten for medical reasons and for showing the issues that still arise around this. Love your videos and keep up the good work! Can't wait for the next one

    Gluten is also in soy sauce (the most common brands), a lot of brands of mustard, and so many other things. I even found some smoked himalayan salt that had wheat added to it. If you're gluten free you have to check EVERYTHING, including how food was handled and if there was any chance that the person preparing it or the surface it was on might have had any contact with wheat, or if wheat flour was used in that kitchen recently (it gets in the air and takes a long time to settle back out onto everything). One restaurant I went to had "gluten free ramen" and when I asked to double check that the broth was gluten free, found out that is was not, even though the menu item was advertised as "gluten free." And almost every time I order a salad and emphasize that I can't have croutons, it's still brought out with croutons. I only eat at restaurants I trust, or if I have no other choice. Even then occasionally someone screws up and I end up sick for a week and unable to function. You never realize how much of our regular social interactions revolve around food until you develop a food allergy or something like celiac.

I’m personally gluten free, not by choice, and it can be extremely difficult at times when you want to go out with friends and family but are forced to go to a restaurant or house that doesn’t serve anything without gluten. Ceoliac living in Ireland here 🙋🏼 I've been gluten free for seven years now and things have gotten way better. There's a lot more products available. I used to eat bread that tasted like sawdust. Once I had to survive off chocolate milk and ham for a week when I was competing in a technology competition in Belgium! However, my government has cut discounts I used to get on gluten free products. They're expensive here and I HAVE to buy them because I don't have a choice. That's why when someone is gluten free because of a fad diet I get mad, real mad 😡

      @Cat that is completely false. If something is a fad, like gluten free products, they raise prices to get more money. This actually makes it harder for a lot of people WHO ACTUALLY have gluten intolerance, because they can't find food for them at a reasonable price

We do have a few amazing restaurants and stores with awesome GF options though. I tend to have a lot of choices (although I tend to get sick about 25% of the time I eat out because many places aren't great about contamination). There's an amazing pizza place, of all things, that has a crazy about of options.

    Loved your video! I don't have celiac disease (as far as I know) but every time I tell myself I'll be fine eating gluten and the sensitivity is all in my head, I eat something with gluten in it and get breakouts everywhere or terrible cramps. My aunt also gets nasty rashes from gluten despite testing negative for celiac disease, and my sister has bad reactions to it as well. My sister's doctor even told her she has an allergy, so when people say that only people with celiac disease need to avoid gluten, it's so frustrating. For some of us it's just best to avoid it. Listen to your body.

    I have mixed feelings about gluten free eating... I don't tend to eat a ton of gluten anyway as I know it's not great for us. My mum, however, has an underactive thyroid and actually her doctor has finally told her after 20 years of struggling that if she eats less gluten, or gluten free products that it can help her a lot. It's helped her so much so if anyone suffers from an underactive thyroid then try out a diet with less gluten, it's worked wonders.

    I have Celiac's desise.... I was in kindergarten when I started to fall very I'll. I stayed in hospital for weeks on end. I was told it was in my head, I just didn't want to go to school is what so many doctors told me. I was in grade three when it got so bad that sitting was causing severe abdominal pain. It was un-berable pain. My teachers were under standing though. Then my mom said enough is enough and got me an appointment with the doctor who saved me and my sisters lives before. He found dangerously high white blood cells. My parents found me a doctor (the closest to me at six hours of a drive from me) by the time my appointment came I was in grade four. It was October twenty first when we left. On the twenty second we arrived. I had a appointment with the doctor at six thurty am. She did blood test and other tests.on the twenty third I was scheduled for my test. The test is a surgery where a camera is inserted into your small intestine from your mouth. The doctor said it would take a week or two to get the results of the test. But... Right after the surgery she said to go on the gluten free diet intsantly. She said it was one of the most severe cases she has seen. What was happening was my body could not digest the gluten (wheat, barley,outs,rye,malt and where I live pink Himalayan salt.) So instead my body digested my small intestine.my small intestine was half the size of a healthy kids my age. I returned home on October twenty third and went gluten free on November first. I thought I would be a normal kid but no.... I developed severe axiety and self OCD even dementia ( only mild dementia).I have severe ostioperocise , DC and can't take calcium supliments because of medical reasons. I am now eleven and have been gluten free for almost three years. I still face challenges but I found out a few things like: Subway gluten free subs are crossed contaminated, McDonald's fries are completely safe and check everything even if you think it won't be like casberey Oreo cream eggas are safe and sound are Chapman's cookies and cream ice cream. So that's my Celiac's desise story.

    I'm sorry but unless you actually have a problem with gluten (celiac/allergy/intolerance) this diet won't do shit. What usually happens is that people cut out things like desserts and that is what makes people lose weight. I've had to go mostly gluten free, besides my bread, because my mom has celiac, a wheat intolerance, and a gluten allergy. It's actually pretty easy to go gluten free, if there's a bread product, there's a gluten free option. I've been mostly gluten free for almost three years, luckily I don't have to go gluten free but we don't even have regular flour in the house

I'm really sick, and i don't know if it's gluten or milk or infection or something... I'm kinda stressed. i was told i should eat more wheat, but 1 month ago, i realized wheat and high gluten products made me sick, but i don't know if it's allergy or infection..

      Or ya know. You just get the doctor to test you for it. It could just be an allergy of something that's common in glutinous products and not gluten itself. Just get the test hun.

    • @InesWalls
      @InesWalls 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't cut it before you go to the doctor or the results would be inconclusive. I'm diagnosed with celiac disease and a lactose intolerance, and it is necessary to keep eating both of them for the results. Ask for a blood test on antitransglutaminase and if it is a positive result ask for a gastroscopy, that way you will know for sure if you are celiac or gluten sensitive. For the lactose test there's different ones, and it depends on the doctor. But DON'T CUT ANY OF IT BEFORE YOU GET THE RESULTS, OR THEY COULD COME NEGATIVE AND YOU WILL NOT KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE. It's very important to know if you're celiac, it's a autoimmune disease and it can affect your life in many different ways, not only your diet.
      Hope this helps!

    I'm gluten intolerant and while it is mild and I fully acknowledge that plenty of people have it worse, I have had to cut out specific foods unless they're 100% gluten free like pizza, cakes and cupcakes, pasta, etc. My mom can't afford gluten free because it is more expensive where I live and it's really hard to find but often times that means I have to choose between pain and nausea or feeling bad because my mom has to spend more money just so I can be okay. Thank you so much for doing this video and bringing light to the gluten free lifestyle and for all your other videos where you try to educate yourself and appreciate the way you're able to live and the privilege you have as an American or as someone who lives in LA. I honestly wish there were more people like you in the world ❤

    I recently went gluten free because it messes up my stomach. As I was basking in my woes at all the wonderful grainy things I had lost from my diet, I spotted a small glimmer of hope on a Cheerios box. “Gluten free” it read. My heart soared.

    I went gluten free a year and a half ago as a New Years resolution, due to depression. I didn't notice a difference after a year, so I tried eating it for a week and I had the worst emotional breakdown. I removed it again and payed closer attention to ingredients and I am now officially off of anti-depressants. Gluten sensitivity isn't always the typical physical symptoms. It can have mental and emotional symptoms as well.

    After my sister-in-law discovered she had celiac's she learned that, surprisingly, most wines have gluten in them. The barrels are coated in a wheat based substance to keep them air-tight.
    Also, in response to all the people saying Cheerios are gluten free, there is a difference between things being certified gluten free and actually being without gluten. The regulations are quite loose. If you are gluten free by choice or only have a mild allergy then those foods are great, but for those with severe intolerance, they can be sensitive to quantities 10x smaller than what the FDA requires.

    im so happy you acknowledged how hard it is to follow these diets (gluten free as an example, others being vegan) in other parts of the world. Im nigerian and vegan which is hard when I'm home (as I'm in boarding school in spain) because every meal here is based around meat- not helped by the fact that vegetables are so. expensive. Its a lot easier when I'm in spain but not a lot of people have this privilege and a lot of health bloggers/vloggers tend to ignore that and criticise people unable to live the way they're able to in places like LA. damn this is a long rant but BASICALLY love you girl and appreciate you and you're content x

    I feel for those who have actual gluten intolerance or allergies.. I just wish people won't bandwagon onto it and say they're intolerant or allergic when they aren't. As a waitress, if you tell me you have an allergy, the kitchen goes through a lot of steps to make sure there's no cross contamination. If it's just a lifestyle choice, tell me, it saves us some unnecessary steps.

      fun fact, you actually cannot be allergic to gluten! You can have celiacs disease, which means you cannot digest gluten. You can have a gluten sensitivity which explains its self, or you can have a wheat allergy:)

    My parish chapel has gluten free communion bread to accommodate the few people who need it. It got implemented in my first communion year because a friend of mine got diagnosed with celiacs disease and they made sure she was supported which looking back is really thoughtful and lovely.

    My Mom was diagnosed with Celiac over a decade ago, before "gluten-free" was a commonly known thing. It has gotten way easier as gluten-free foods have become more mainstream. We live in central North Carolina near Raleigh (so, not the country but certainly not L.A.) and there are lots of options. It used to be just Whole Foods but now other grocery stores carry some gluten-free items, too. We eat out a lot too and she seldom has a problem.
    One thing I will say is that she(/the whole family) knows what has gluten and what doesn't. So, when ordering at a restaurant, she knows what specific changes she needs (no tortilla strips on my salad) or what specific questions to ask (does this glaze have soy sauce in it?) when ordering. Not every waiter knows the term "celiac" and sometimes they have to double check with the chef, but when you know what specifically to ask for, it's a lot easier for waiters to work with you than if you just ask "can I get this entree gluten-free?"
    Anyway, just food for thought (no pun intended) and a possible reason for that one waiter's obtuseness.

    Gluten is in a lot more than you would think. You also have to watch out for oats. They are grown where wheat is grown in the off season. There are also way better pasta options.

    THANK YOU!! My family and I are gluten free. we have an easier time with wheat. If we get wheat contamination, we feel really sick for a few days after. we have friends that have it to the point where they can't touch where wheat had been and if they do, they will get blisters on their hands and sometimes even worst.
    I really appreciate it. Thank you!
