When I was in college in the 80s I had just turned 21 and after a few months I was bored of the San Diego bar scene. I wanted to go to Los Angeles to hit their bar scene. My buddy got us as far as Orange County. We were at a bar near Cal State Fullerton and I was dancing with a pretty gal when I heard the drum beats of this song come on, there, on each wall motorized projector screens dropped from the ceiling and this song came on. My mind was so freaking blown. I couldn't help but watch her. The song ended, the screens went back up Never to return the rest of the night> Oh yeah, Jody. You are magical.
As a white teen out in theburbs in the 80’s I bought Miss Watley’s first album and was completely crushed by her beauty, style and class. Plus her music was the jam! Have loved her since and still play her jams at 50.

One of the most gorgeous creatures to ever grace this Earth. She is like a modern day Nefertiti. The fact that she has tremendous talent and style in addition to that breathtaking beauty makes her one of the most captivating musical stars we've ever had in the U.S. For awhile I thought she had a chance to give Madonna a run for her money, but the quality of her albums started to slip after the first two and she was unable to regain the necessary momentum to reclaim her prominence.. Regardless, she will always be a favorite of mine, and I have to say, when people are unaware of her it drives me nuts!
Her music quality did not slip, she made several great records after her first two. I think hers sales dipped partly because she was growing as a person and artist and her music became more mature and not all dance pop RnB. Her Affairs of the Heart album is her best work (in my opinion) with excellent dance, mid tempos and ballads with adult/real life themes and she sounds amazing. Sometimes music fans put artists in a box and don't or can't embrace their growth. It has happened to many singers.
Jody, style miles ahead of the rest during her day. This chic was on another level with her wardrobe choices. I always loved the way she danced, moved, and worked the camera in videos. A good dancer always shines, even 26 years on from the release of this video.
