    Lyrics:
    Coffee, tea or me baby, touche ole
    My opening line might be a bit passe
    But don't think that I don't know what I'm feeling for you
    'Cause I got a vibe on you
    The first time that I saw you, saw you
    I need your love, and I won't bring no pain
    A little birdie told me that you feel the same game
    I'm for the real, and for you I'm true blue
    Let's make a deal, sugar
    All I want to do is be your one and only lover
    I just want to be your lovergirl
    I just want to rock your world

      @@muffs55mercury61Yes. Here's another fun fact. Ta Mara of Ta Mara & The Seen had a guitar player named Oliver Leiber. His Late Father Jerry was part of the first Successful Songwriting Team in Music. they met in 1950 through a mutual friend at 17. Jerry did the words and mike did the music. They wrote the original version of Hound Dog, for Willie Mae Big Mama Thornton then songs for The Coasters, Drifters, Wilbert Harris, Elvis Presley. In the 1960's in The Brill Building they helped usher in the original girl group phenomenon. They worked with Steelers Wheel (Stuck In The Middle With You), before Gerry Rafferty went Solo then Peggy Lee. Their songs were featured in Grease, Happy Days, and American Graffiti.

      Streisand has a beautiful tone that surpasses Teena's somewhat high voice. But i really appreciated Teena's materials, and i had most of her records. She is one of the only musicians that i discovered early that didn't ever get popular by crossing over. Black music is actually a fairly small section of the music biz (pre-rap).

      I was at the Victory tour in july of 84 and saw the Jaksons in Jacksonville, saw Prince in 84or85, I think November 84, also in 82 or 83 right after I moved to Tallahassee. 1999 had just come out so I saw the 1999 tour and Purple rain tour.
      I also saw Eddie Murphy with in the same year, winter 83.
      Whitney Houston and Tina Turner in the mid to late 80's in Tallahassee
      I worked in TV AND RADIO AT THE TIME.
      Will you like to see my t-shirts? Ticket stubs.....
      Prince spent a lot of time on FAMU CAMPUS IN MY MOTHER IN LAW'S OFFICE AND DONATED MONEY TO DR. FOSTER, LEADER and founder OF FAMU'S MARCHING 100 BOTH TIMES, and they did the superbowl halftime show, AND TO THE NATIONAL RETENTION CENTER OWNED AND RUN BY DR. CLINITA FORD. MY MOTHER IN LAW.
      All of these concerts were in Tallahassee between 82 and 88.
      Check your facts.
      I have been to every concert within 300 miles of where I live that I wanted to go to. It is easier to get tickets if you are in TV OR RADIO.
      Instead of using my money to buy expensive cars, I went to concerts.

    I have yet to understand why this woman is so damn underrated. When people mention Prince, Michael, Whitney, and Mariah... Teena should definitely be apart of that super group. She had everything, The Talent, The Innovation, The Artistry and The Longevity. She wasn't a boxed R&B singer (meaning she didn't make the typical R&B music that everyone else was making or following trends that everyone else was doing). She had her own sound. A lot of her work Slays MOST Nippy and Mimi's catalogue. No Shade, No Stanning

    • @laminage
      @laminage 9 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      It was simple. She was hard to Market. A White Girl doing R & B it didn't make sense. She said she wasn't allowed on the Cover of her Fist Motown Album because she's White but Berry Gordy insisted that he wanted people to think she was Black. She also fought for Artists Royalties. Also, wouldn't this Song be a great Mash-up to Duran Duran's The Reflex

    • @kayteeelle
      @kayteeelle 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      laminage But still...people found ways to marketed The Beastie Boys, Janis Joplin...and others who were doing black music..it's not like she was appropriating. Not only that but she doesn't have many songs that reached the top 10. my mom has ALL her albums. Every last one has classics on them. I think that has much to do with the marketing too. I can only find 6 music videos of hers and music videos were big deal in the 80s and I can't find much of her performances in the 80s besides the Soul Train ones either. Even pictures of her are extremely rare.

    • @laminage
      @laminage 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      You're right about that. I live in Canada and growing up in the 1980's I never heard her Music on The Radio. Also, in MTV's Infancy they almost "Never" Played Songs by Black Artists.

      kayteeelle Probably as much the fans fault, too. Of course today, it's so much easier for fans to give feedback to the music industry about how much they enjoy certain performers. Rick James kept what she looked like on the down low, until she was well liked, and everybody was digging her. People were assuming she was black because of how much soul she had. It was a shock to more than a few when they saw she was a white girl. I just love this funky style of music!

      Hi Renee, i also assumed she was black, because she had so much soul. The duet with Rick James proved that. but she was a real powerhouse and i loved her music.

      reverse racism, right?
      Oh well...It's good to know that racism/hypocracy doesn't just run one way. Even black folks can be guilty of it as is evident with hie Rick James feared Tina Marie might be ill recieved by a different race by withholding her true ethnic identity. So sad.

      That's happened to me numerous times, but not with this song. However, I still think that "I can't wait" by Nu Shooz was actually sung by a black girl. I've just never been able to accept that.

Hard to believe that she started on the Venice Boardwalk right when I lived right next door in Ocean Park Santa Monica. I was immediately smitten with her starting with "Lover Girl". She could rock my sox off and then break your heart with a love song! God bless her and keep her.
