    Everything in Video. Open Gate, Phase Detect Auto Focus, SSD video capture externally. Fan cooling for long video capture sessions. All the tools. Full Frame, L mount, Ergonomics that only Sony is beginning to grasp. Panasonic has always been a brand for the creator. The venerable GH5 for years if you could tolerate the Contrast Detect Auto Focus. You do so much and more. Panasonic has stomp the world of video in a mirrorless with the complete package. And being a Sony shooter. Yeah, I want one.

    Great review. I was thinking about going back to LUMIX. Had this not been limited to apsc in 60 fps I would have bought one. I went for the G9II instead. Functionality wise it’s pretty much the same camera but with even less limitations. I’m surprised how far they’ve pushed the m43 sensors since the original G9. It now definitely feels much less of a compromise.

      May I ask why the G9ii? Since the crop of the S5IIX is APSC which is still wider than the G9ii M43 without crop? I am genuinely curious because I hear many people making the same decision

    • @LiveMyJourneyTom
      @LiveMyJourneyTom 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@elieh.studio lenses you get for the m43 have the system crop already already calculated into the focal length equivalent. This means that if you want a lens that will give you same field of view as 24-70 lens on full frame you will buy a 12-35 lens. If you use a 24-70 full frame lens on s5II in 50 fps or more and apply the crop you will end up with a field of view of 36-105 equivalent. G9II will not have its field of view affected in any of the recording modes. This is a bit simplified but hopefully makes sense

      @elieh.studio 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the input ! I get it's a bummer to have to move forward or backward whenever you change your frame rate, but I think the depth of field difference is much more noticeable and is much more of a problem than that, at least for me. The DOF of a 2.8 lens on a FF and a M43 is very different and it makes the M43 look "not very good" in my humbe opinion, or is there something I am missing? @@LiveMyJourneyTom

    • @LiveMyJourneyTom
      @LiveMyJourneyTom 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@elieh.studio it all depends on what you’re going for. Shallow depth of field is not the magical bullet. It can be used for nice effect but it’s very easy to over do it. I think m43 strikes a good balance. Once again the like you’ve observed the with fov the depth of field can also be affected with increased distance from the subject. Consider that human eye has a f2.2 aperture at about 43mm focal length. You also don’t notice the background blur so much as when you shift your focus it changes.
      There are up sides and drawbacks of each system and each can be used to great effect in the right hands.

    • @SouthboundProduction
      @SouthboundProduction 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In the end, its if you value low light performance and a lesser iso value in log profile as opposed to the S5II.
      VLOG starts at 640 and second at 4000
      Although, the S5II only does 6k 4:2:0 not 422 like the XH2s in open-gate mode. Also through HDMI for BRAW the XH2s can do open gate but the S5II only does 16:9 or 17:9, (something with fuji ignoring the HDMI rules for this).
      The XH2s doesn't really have any dual iso, the base is at 1250 in FLOG2 which is significantly better than FLOG1 in terms of dynamic range but you lose so much light control and you're forced to shoot with an ND Filter or stop down, losing either your creative imagery or in terms of depth separation for bokeh.
      L Mount is on the rise for sure, I ultimately got rid of my XH2s for the A7IV then realized the A7IV sucked and went to the S5II.
      The upgrade path for the S5II is quite nice as well if you want to go to the cinema path the BMCC6k that just released is the same mount or you can wait for newer Panasonic cameras down the road like the S1R2 or S1H2 which is due upon us!

      @@Wildridefilms I honestly wouldnt consider the 4k 120 on the XH2s even usable, it's such a noise fest i'm not sure what fuji was thinking, you have to be shooting a non-log profile for it to be pretty clean which disappoints me even more, as anything above 4k 60 drops the 14bit DR into 12bit and hurts it that even more too!

      @SouthboundProduction 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Wildridefilms oh yeah I meant to say that, I probably worded that wrong but eh there’s a reason the XH2s isn’t widely used atm, too many problems atm. Few little updates, Fuji seems to have abandoned it.
      The XH2s image is just too digitally sharp in my personal enjoyment case.
      Still no FLOG2 support via CST in Davinci resolve, hurts the workflow a lot. Generally it’s up to Fuji to contact BM to give them that information but they still have YET to do that…???
      I was hoping the XH2s would’ve had more to its name but it’s just a semi glorified video camera that was outshined by the XS20 already at such a lower price.

    Its a great camera. The main problem that I see when compared to the competition i.e. Sony is that Panasonic doesn't have the range of professional lenses suitable for video. Yes there's the L mount alliance but most of thoses lenses are not designed for video. With Sony their GM lenses allow for Click and De-Click, Auto or Manual Iris control, and there's Focus Breathing Elimination in their newer bodies. Sony GM lenses areally are designed for both photo and video. Sony really practices the One Mount to Rule them All idea. That's just not true... Sony's lenses are heavily photo focused with many of them having non-linear focus control, heavy focus breathing and widely range in weight and size. Sure some of their new GM mkii lenses are starting to combat that but the vast majority of the existing line up are terrible video lenses. Lumix allows you to set the focus from non-linear to linear on all lenses, also allows you to control the focus throw so you can dial that in perfectly for follow focus work. Lumix also doesn't need focus breathing compensation because they build most of their lenses to be breathing controlled... their pro series are all very well breathing control and the same goes for the f1.8 primes. The f1.8 primes also are all designed at the same size and weight, making it a perfect set up in a small cinema rig, with a follow focus on rails where you dont need to shift and recalibrate the gearing every time you change the lens, also makes them great for stabilised work on a gimbal as no rebalancing is required. Yeah thats fair about iris control... although most people running mirrorless cinema rigs are going to control it in-body anyway and if you're running a more serious cinema set up, lets be honest, you're going to be using proper cinema lenses with gearing anyway. At least thats what I'd be doing. So i guess thats a point to sony... but a rather small one. The only thing on Sony that competes with the f1.8 primes are the third party viltrox autofocus cine primes and that isn't a complete series yet.

    • @dyong888

      I'm coming from the viewpoint of a "run and gun" solo / volgging, and video on tripod / desktop setup. And I'm focusing on just the few key lenses I need. Not comparing nor needing the entire line up of Sony FE mount lenses. Also I tend to gravitate towards f2.8 zooms. Not primes. Except my one 24mm f1.4 GM which is exceptional.
      For the lenses I'm concerned with, which are the "most common and essential focal lengths", the GM range solves all the problems for me - Breathing elimination, auto iris, de-clicked iris when I want artistic control, relatively light weight, weather sealed. And did I mention AF that is second to none?
      Don't get me wrong, I want to like the Panasonic system. I have the GH5 and some lenses and I like the far superior handling, intuitive UI, video centric features, and rugged feel. I assume the same carries over in the full frame bodies.
      But alas, the lenses are still the shortcoming IMO. Yes some primes are the same size and Sony's lenses aren't. So what? That doesn't bother me much. I don't run gimbals and I don't need my moving image to be "cinematic".
      Linear focus isn't a big deal for me. I'm not shooting or don't intent to shoot highly scripted or cinematic videos. Yes its nice to have. Also Sony's newer bodies and lenses have linear control I believe.
      I guess for now I'll still be using M43 and Sony 35mm Full Frame but trending towards completely using Sony. I like the idea of the G9 II with its much improved AF, smaller overall kit, video centric features too. But for now I guess Sony also gives me far better image quality. I shoot both stills and video.
      BTW, next time learn to type in paragraphs. Makes for easier reading.

    What is so special about the S5II and S5IIX is the first time we see PDAF in a Panasonic camera, but also the first time we see a downgrade in image quality compared to the previous GEN.
    The S5II(X) is a nice camera with Open Gate, good DR, good AF and very good IBIS, but it is also more digital because of very weird edge sharpening and with worse fine details than the first S5 (especially with standard profiles). The most surprising is when using BRAW on the S5II, the image is much better than when using internal recording, so the issue is really their new engine and certainly not the PDAF.
    I still don't understand why they put this bad internal processing on the S5II(X).

    SSD speed is more than enought to edit directly from it, and speaking of "moving" to what drive? NVMe is faster, but both SSD and NVMe have limited lifespan and write cycles.
    Moving huge files back and forth will just tear and wear that drives, literally. And while files are huge now a days, even if lifespan is hundreds TBs, it's not that much...
    I don't see advantages to move and not edit from SSD - regular 500Mb/s reading speed is about 4.000 (!) Mbit bitrate.

    I think the S5IIX makes for the greatest value professional studio camera right now. However, if you are a solo creator filming yourself and you also want a camera to take on trips, run and gun, etc without other equipment, the Sony ZV-E1 has some advantages and why I ended up with one:
    1. Stabe - stabilisation is not in the same universe, you have motion data for gimbal like in post or dynamic active for straight out of camera, there are no weird corner/image wobbles with wide lenses like on the S5IIX, it's totally game changing.
    2. Autofocus - while the S5IIX is definitely a huge leap vs the non phase detect systems, the AI chip in the ZV-E1 is something to behold, other than things like animal, bird, insect, etc being much better, it detects a person and face much further, in far more conditions, in low light and it can predict where a person will be to pre-focus there, you can register a face for it to always prioritise (e.g. yourself or a bride), it's incredible. It's hard to use anything else when you've experienced it.
    3. Portability - it's tiny, it's smaller than an A7C while giving you the same sensor as the FX3/A7SIII and the same AI chip as the A7R V, that's incredible.
    4. Rolling Shutter - 5ms vs 20ms+, it's just a much better camera for hand held non studio stuff, run and gun, etc if you're not using a gimbal - if you are using a gimbal, the S5IIX crushes it though.
    5. Low Light - the second dual native ISO12,800 gives you the same quality and noise levels as ISO640 but with a fraction of the light (tested by CINED), that's insane, that's 4+ stops or 20x less light for the same quality. In terms of practically what it means is you get the same noise with a 20W COB light and some 5W LED lights as a 400W COB light and 100W panel lights - that gives you a lot of flexibility as a solo creator filming in different environments and conditions and allows you to reduce the weight of your kit
    6. SlowMo 4K - 4k60 no crop, 4k120 only 10% crop, great for wildlife and sports, very fun to have.
    But the S5IIX has dual card slots, 6K open gate, raw/ProRes, no overheating (though ZV-E1 only overheats at 120fps 15+ min takes, no big deal), full size HDMI, much better screen, viewfinder, etc, etc, etc - a much better camera in many ways, but ones that may be less important specifically for 1 man content creators, especially on the go, food for thought! :)

      The ZVE1 stabilization heavily relies on high shutter speeds. The Catalyst browse softens and downscales the bit depth and colour fidelity of images. None of those problems on the S5IIX. Sure, you get corner wobbling on ultrawide lenses but they fixed that completely on the G9II with Electronic stabilization and I would'nt be surprised if this camera gets it through a firmware update like they recently added handheld high res mode. Which is a weak point for Sony, not very good with FW updates. About AF, yeah the ZVE1 is probably better but no AF is flawless yet, so not a big difference now since both are very reliable for the most part. And the rolling shutter is a noticeable difference (10ms vs 21ms) but not a huge deal with the excellent stabilization. And about low light, the ZVE1 will only pull ahead from extremely high ISO levels (25600+) at which point neither camera will look good but the S5IIX is actually noticeably sharper and cleaner between 1600 and 12800 which is a significantly more useful range. Slow motion is hands down better on the ZVE1.
      To conclude, I think the ZVE1 is a better beginner creator camera and the S5IIX is a better pro content creator camera and mini cinema camera.

      @@Wildridefilms Maybe you're thinking of the E10? - Both ZV-E1 and S5II X have similar performance IBIS for video (Panasonic is superior for photos though). Just Sony has better image processing with wide lenses. EDIT: Correction, S5II IBIS alone is vastly superior after watching Richard Wong's comparison, I stand corrected.
      If it's digital/electronic stabe alone, then yeh, you need 1/200s or higher, but with IBIS you can get away with around 1/100s or even 1/50s if you're very careful. Catalyst supports IBIS unlike Gyroflow and other software for really impressive results.
      I don't know what you mean by "none of those problems on the S5II X" - it's the same problems except also a wobbly image on the Panasonic. But the S5II X does not keep motion data, so you cannot fix it in post like on the Sony.
      The stabe from the G9II is never coming to the S5II X, it's not a software feature but a hardware one. It has an amazing 8 stop IBIS in combination with software, maybe we will get something closer to Sony's Dynamic Active on the S5II X, but not something like the G9II or Sony IBIS + Catalyst.
      AF it depends on your use cases I suppose, in a studio, no difference. Out travelling, it can pick your face out of a crowd and auto focus on that (you upload an image of your face to the camera). It can track a body (or any subject with tap to track) from very far away in low light, I used to use manual or single point focus a lot previously but I havent' used it in months on the ZV-E1. It is pretty close to perfect. On the Panasonic your subject must be a large % of the image with reasonably good light before autofocus latches on, then it's equally good.
