I know a justification for not having it has been that the shutter is more delicate than the sensor, but it’s not like we use shutter close to not put a body cap on. it’s going to have something over it most of the time. it just needs to help keep dust off the sensor for the seconds it isn’t covered up by a lens of a body cap

It's a very cool idea and feature until you're forced to deal with a malfunction, considering it's just one more mechanical thing that can go wrong and lead to expensive repair. Much better for me to just handle my equipment with extreme care.

The 6K no tracking while recording externally/monitoring is now fixed with the new firmware update so that's nice. Another great thing about Lumix, they're super good with firmware updates. They also added Blackmagic RAW which works flawlessly, gives you almost an extra stop of dynamic range because of the highlight recovery feature plus WB/ISO control works as it should which it doesn't on many other systems. Also, you need to confirm the AF tracking otherwise it will jump to your hands or other people and it won't find you when you walk out of frame and come back again. No one never actually confirms the tracking,? Amazing to see how many people actually misses this, it greatly improves the AF on the original S-series as well. When you do actually confirm the tracking by hitting the touch screen you get arrows pointing in towards the subject to let you know you've actually locked on to the subject and confirmed to the AF system that you indeed want it to track that specific object and not something else like your hands or another person.

Are you speaking about BRAW in 5ii or 5iiX? It really strange tactic, s5 and s5iiX have external BRAW, meanwhile 5ii don't. So in result 5iiX + Assist12G are too expensive together.

    • @skrotfiske
      @skrotfiske 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@kiyashko86 Yes, BRAW in the S5II and S5IIX is excellent. In the S5 however it's pretty bad as it has lots of baked in NR which def isn't something you want in a RAW format. Not strange, it's what they've always done, in the S1 and the GH5 for example you needed to pay for the upgrade to get V-Log for example. Pretty common thing, if you don't want that then you'll have to pay for the slightly more expensive model which has it out of the box. Depending on where you're located it's around $200 for the RAW upgrade in the S5II.

Good review. Thanks for doing a long-term review since those are - to me - much more valuable. I think the issue with dust is that it is much easier to damage a shutter when the lens is detached than it is to damage the sensor. I will probably get the IIX because I would LIKE to have the option to stream live events, and possibly use all-i if I amgoing to have to do alot of chroma keying, where apparently all-i does make it easier to have a clean key.

    - no OLPF (be ready for moire like you see on the couch at 3:40)
    - rolling shutter performance is pretty bad but is combated by the great IBIS
    - the 4k 60 crops is a real pain and probably it's only major downside
    - autofocus is good but not great

Excellent review Tyler! New subscriber 😊 I’m trying hard to refrain from saying “I told you so” to all my Sony/Canon autofocus zombie mates now they see all those other features Lumix has, as you point out. Like you say, the IBIS is so underrated for sheer useability, and the VLog profile for fuss free setup and easy beautiful results. I’m looking forward to the successor to the S1H because the current one doesn’t support PAL 50Hz in Open Gate, which means I’m wary of using it for pro projects where I live in Australia, a PAL country. Also the OLPF on the S1H removes any chance of moire from the get go. Also I’d point out the other 3rd party L mount manufacturers now like TTArtisans and Sirui for their anamorphics, to name a couple! Exciting times in creator world!

I believe Gerald mentioned in his review for the S5 IIx that the autofocus issue where human tracking wasn't working when using 6k modes with a monitor on the S5II was either fixed on the S5 IIX or was just another included feature with that camera. At this point we'll just have to see if the S5 II gets it with a future firmware update. He also reported that some of the autofocus issues with slow motion were improved with the S5 IIX as well, at least in 1080p.

    • @nicoarcenas
      @nicoarcenas ปีที่แล้ว

Was really surprised to hear about this about the S5 IIX (on Gerald's channel as well) but on the same day I found out that S5 II announced a much higher MSRP in my country (something like $600+ more)😭 so I kinda lost hope for the S5 IIX and the Panny system in the general.
I hope something like the future Sony a7c II or Canon R replacement comes to close to a good value like the S5 II is. Sony cameras are actually decently priced here.

Great review, seriously considering this camera. You mentioned Prores being slightly darker, this is actually because for some reason Lumix cameras encode Prores as video levels instead of full range data levels. It's easy to change in Resolve but some NLE don't let you. Once you change this setting it looks the same as the other codecs.

Excellent perspective. Enjoy hearing the view of someone who isn't a Lumix diehard. I shoot on a GH6 and was really tempted by the S5II but the "pro features" just aren't quite what I'd like. Hoping the S1HII (or whatever) fixes a few thing & brings it up a level.

Weeell, I'm selling my R6 this summer and surely going for a S5II lol. I just buy it two months ago, but video limitations are really annoying me. Sure, taking photos with it is a beautiful and seamless experience, and 4k 60p is awesome, if I can keep my mental health while shooting it. I was really reluctant to leave Canon, but if that Sigma adapter works as well as Tyler put it, adapting my EF glass shouldn't be a problem. Hopping to doesn't lose too much money reselling my R6.

    Hey Tyler, excellent video!
I'd like to add one small thing though... To use ProRes with the V-Log profile, you need to first convert the footage from Full to Legal Range to fix the levels difference (that's why saturation and contrast/black level aren't the same as the other codecs). Same with Atomos recorders. A lot of people seem to think it's because ProRes is a higher quality codec that the image has more contrast/pop, but this isn't the case. Other codecs do have proper levels, while ProRes isn't interpreted correctly... which a bit of a bummer that this issue hasn't been fixed over the years...

I wanna throw a point up on the board for the R6 II. It is the only camera in this price range that doesn't crop on 4K60 and shooting IPB is just fine/perfect for anyone either breaking into pro/creator work or a serious hobbyist who doesn't want to fill their drives up fast with ALL-I and larger uncompressed codecs.
As a commercial/doc editor first who shoots a little bit and does photo gigs on the side, this was the godsend buy for me (who also has EF lenses, a BM6K to pair and a bunch of LPE6 batteries kicking around). And with the rock solid autofocus, t's the perfect "just get the shot" camera for my use case.
That being said, if the S5 II X somehow managed to remove that crop and their new autofocus came out blazing out of the box, I might've reconsidered, but I also like how the R6 II just keeps me simple with as much image quality as I need for the web.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk on Tyler's video.

I have been shooting video for 17 years now, and ONLY with manual focus. I want to get a full frame camera now and this one looks great for my needs. As for automatic focus, the only time I would be using it is in place of racking focus during a take, in most cases. Being able to touch the screen and have the lens focus to that spot is 100% all I need, and this camera does it just fine. Seventeen years without autofocus, and I've done well. Rarely have I ever wished to have autofocus, but there's a few circumstances when it would be nice. Also, the stabilization in this looks perfect for my needs as well. I've been using a Glidecam knock-off to stabilize my footage most of the time. Looks like I can do most work being hand-held with the stabilization in this camera. This camera would eliminate the need for a gimble and a focus puller system.

Hi there, I’m considering going from the R6 to the S5IIX for hybrid shooting. However, the excellent AF & tracking on the Canon, especially on the PHOTO side has me hesitating. However I know LUMIX just release a firmware update with improvements to their AF. So I’m wondering if this will compare it to the Canon AF at all? Any suggestion on which way to go?

I have a S5 and Sigma MC21, and the autofocus varies wildly across EF lenses. Some Sigma lenses are slow but reasonable, like the 18-35 and 24-105. Older Canon lenses like the 70-200 f4 II are very slow in AF and the IBIS doesn't work. The original 35mm f1.4 consistently misses AF. I am very interested in how much better the S5 II works with EF lenses.

I'm still confused with this crop at 4k60p, does it further reduce the pixel resolution?
I mean I know that video does not make use of all the pixels the sensor is offering - which is 24 Mp - versus a 4k image being about 8.2 Mp. So alone there you "waste" a lot of pixels but ok it's not an video exclusif gear as the Blackmagic pocket cinema 4K for example, which uses a sensor only having the amout of pixels it needs for the purpose of 4K video.
But what I definitely wouldn't want is ending up recording in less than 3840x2160 and having software upscaling to get back to 3840x2160 output, that would be a no go. But if I still got real native 4k recording resolution and just having that 1.5 times zoom effect, i could live with it and spend the money on that cam. I don't need the 60p for slow mo, shifting back and forth 30p-60p, I need 60p to have less blury movements in tutorial videos, so for my purpose I would always record in 60p.

7.33: you can change autofocus to human, face/eye, or human/animal. so there is a face /eye only detection. And the focus loss on longer lenses will sometimes happen on my 70-300 also, so I hope they can fix that. I also have a button lock on some of the wheels which I bound on one of the front custom buttons to avoid the problems with unwanted setting adjustments. The tracking features on 6k open gate via cdmi seems fixed on the s5x as far as I know, so the s5II will probably have it fixed too ;)

I thought I've heard Gerald Undone and a couple others say that the S5IIX DOES have human/eye detect in the 6K modes even though the S5II does not. Is this not your experience?

As someone who has has owned s1h, s5, and other Panasonics like Varicam, and now shoots a lot of canon raw on the r3, in my experience one of the caveats of these cams is just how they hold color and information in more extreme environments. In normal shooting environments they are fantastic, but when I would use them for concerts and things with heavy saturation and intensities, I found the internal codecs this cam offers to not quite hold up, especially if shooting in the 4:2:0 it forces on higher frame rates. Weird artifacts and loss of detail in heavily saturated areas mainly. There’s also videos of banding people have posted even in 10-bit. So yea shooting canon raw lite obviously uses a lot of data, and the clog2 is slightly less impressive on the dynamic range side, but to be able to preserve all the color info is huge to me, and helps me r3 hang better with my larger more expensive cinema cams. That being said, the value of these cameras is certainly unmatched for what they offer at their price point

@2:55, it uses a sensor that Sony _manufactures_, but not a sensor that uses Sony's actual technology. Not saying you're wrong, just think this is something that people might misinterpret. If it was a "Sony sensor" then your images would be coming out like Sony, but the same is true for Nikon as well, and the Nikon Z cameras have no eye AF like Sony does on "their" brand of cameras. Just wanted to point that out. It is distinctly the computer/chip that is not Sony's manufacturing, so these things control the Lumix look. Great video!

Thanks for a great review. This is a very promising camera in terms of vfm and has functions that a cinema camera should have. That said there are still major drawbacks (rolling shutter, moire, crop in higher frame rates, not very reliable autofocus) and I find that the lumix LUT to rec709 is not ideal for "neutral" color rendering (I have used the Sony LUT in the past for a better matching with the Sony FX3 :) ).
Can I ask an unrelated question?
What robot vacuum cleaner are you using in the studio (0:40) and are you happy with it?

    HI
I currently shoot with an older fuji Xt3 and im looking to upgrade. Im trying to decide between 2 full frame cameras. The new Lumix s5iix or the older Sony A7siii.
My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect.
My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better.
My goal to get the best quality for 4k 60 video.
    Thank you

You seemes to have nailed not only exposure but the overall "Look" of your images
Your dynamic range seems 'satifying' using this comparativly low-priced Panasonic.
I am about to purchase the S52x, So
    * What range IRE to do you mostly keep your exposure on the Waveform? is 80 the max? (is there a trick to using waveform?)
    * Do you adjust youre S-Curves on the panasonic to get better DR? is there a particular boost/cut that you'd recomend?
    * How can you acretian the ideal S-curve levels on such a small screen?
*You managed such good colours here, so how does the S5ii compare with the C200 ~C300?
I think Panasonic deseves the accolades for being less "Trendy", yet hqas so mucg to give ! 🙂

Alongside the 10 bit does the Panasonic S5 Mark 2 and Panasonic S5 Mark 2 X have 8 bit, as i would use the 8 bit for long form interviews.
