Dipping the roller straight into the can like a BOSS

I love when the sound is calm and then you get a sudden loud sanding noise to wake you up

I painted my Boston Whaler with Rustoleum 3 years ago.. I even did the bottom with it... the boat lives on a trailer so it doesnt sit in the water all the time. Its held up extremely well ...still maintains a shine..
What I like about it is that if I scratch the boat...I can sand the area out a bit and repaint that area... it blends really well.
I live in South Florida and the boat is used in a salt water environment in extremely strong sun conditions...I sanded the boat with a DA and 220 grit paper... primed it with Rustoleum primer, and rolled the finish coat...I put on 2 coats.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to refinish their boat.

Did you primer it first or just sand it? I painted a lot of the interior deck and transom. I am going to prep the hull to paint now.

like the way this guy works
thought I was the only one who ever screwed the angle on first then cut it to length and dipped my roller right into the paint can
got me a new buddy now

Painted my old Boston Whaler with this stuff 2 years ago. It still looks great in the South Florida sun. It looks so good, I painted all the exterior doors on my house with it. I got a mirror finish and the look fantastic.Really good stuff!

Was that a marine or rustoleum primer

  • @iamjackalope

I used this paint along with the primer over a coat of Skid No More that I applied to a deck that I glassed on a friends boat. I waited about 10 days to let the Skid No More fully cure. It is a latex water based product and by it's self I thought it was to soft to hold up on the deck. After 10 days I rolled on a primer coat. Let it dry and rolled on 3 coats of the top side paint and ended up with a surface that was hard as a rock and has held up to a salt water environment and all of the abuse the deck of a boat gets. Was very happy with it.

I have painted 3 boats with it (Rustoleum Marine topside paint). It is excellent paint. Rustoleum owns Pettit, so they know what will work. I have found that even though they say on the can not to thin more than 5% with mineral spirits I usually go about 8% for the first two coats. Then I will stick to the 5% for the 3rd usually final coat. I have always used the "roll and tip" method, and the Rustoleum levels out very nicely. You have to get right up and look hard to notice that it wasn't sprayed. They key is the thin multiple coats. It is very hard and durable if you are patient about putting it on. I also let it set for 24 to 48 hours between coats. Then a scuff with 220 and recoat. After the final coat I'll leave it alone for several days then wet sand it and buff it. It looks amazing and is a great durable finish. I think it is a bit more work and having to be patient than some of the Interlux, Pettit, etc... brands, but for 14.00 a quart compared to 45.00 or more per quart...I can wait. People get nervous about it being "oil base paint". That is actually great for a marine environment. It does make you do things differently though. You have to do thin coats allowing each one to dry/cure well before doing the next. I think it is great paint. I was referring to painting the fiberglass hull on a boat in the above remarks also. I think it is probably the best stuff you could use for bare wood like this gentleman did. The oil based paint will penetrate better into the wood before drying. So, I would imagine you are sealing the wood very effectively along with obviously painting it and making it look very good. Again, when you get to the money part of it, the Rustoleum is really hard to beat.

I put in a new kitchen 'lower end cabinet' and under-sink shelf due to the dishwasher leaking water and destroying the particle board crap we had. I bought a very fine sanded $35 sheet of smooth 1/2" plywood for the shelf and the new end cabinet is real plywood with wood simulated veneer. Dishwasher seal is fixed and an alarm has been installed underneath it for future leakage alerts. I wanted to epoxy the shelf or lay a sheet of laminate on it to avoid scuffs and marks from my wife getting stuff in and out from putting stuff under the sink, or just plain letting stuff set on the shelf for ever but the epoxy paint was for garage floors a one gallon was way too much. Normal paint would show 'set' rings, even with oil base. I'm hoping this quart of Rustoleum TOPSIDE is a hard shell when cured and should stand up to normal abuse. Fingers are crossed!!!!

Anybody ever use rusoleum regualar enamel vs the "Topside marine paint" - is there a difference? they ran out at Home depot but they have the regular enamle

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

When you look up the chemical make up there are differences between the rustoleum top side and regular rustoleum. I think it is more UV protection but I am not totally sure.

I don't think that pain is designed to go over bare plywood. at least primer it first. I think the better use of it would be to paint the Hall of your boat. or paint wood that has been epoxy and or fiberglass. I think it would have saved them a half a can of paint

    • @OmFishing

H Pac my thought was I didn't want the deck to be smooth but I wanted it to be somewhat protected and that was cheaper than gel coat

I guess I have backed my ford explorer in. I backed down a private ramp and left my explorer on the ramp and it was low tide. I came back and it was high tide. It was just over the bumper. It seem like a good idea at the time. It did not take long for the rust to start.
