      Last fall I "restored" my 2008 F-250 instead of buying a new truck. Essentially I removed the bed, cut out and replaced bed rails, cut out rot on the wheel wheels and replaced that, cut out and replaced cab corners and parts of the inner rockers and then repainted the truck. After doing this I sprayed the underside of the cab with Chassis Saver which is a product very similar to POR15 and then sprayed fluid film. I sprayed the entire underside of the cab in fluid film over the Chassis Saver paint and the underside still looks great after a salt filled Northern winter. I used fluid film because it is only like $30 a gallon. I used the gun too so I could spray all inside the rockers and through the bed rails. Obviously as you know nothing will totally stop rust. I am basically trying to get my truck to last another 5-7 years before buying a new one. Frequent coats of fluid film over the chassis saver is what I am trying and so far it seems good. I will be putting another coat of fluid film on in fall before the winter again. Once the coat is on it looks like cosmoline is coating the entire underside. It never really dries and is more like a light grease than anything.

      @ProjectFarm so if using on a car say I get the por 15. I would still need to use a primer over top, and then paint of course and finally clear coat to be used on painted surfaces is this correct? I see many people saying need to sand down and use bondo and sometimes metal filler. But on my car the rust isn't that severe. The paint is only beginning to bubble and very slightly crack in small spots. So I feel sanding would be a bad option

      Yeah, I am somewhat concerned by that. It is almost like we are not understanding the point of these rust converters and are testing them against criteria that is unfair. I am not saying I THINK that is the case, just wondering if people with more wisdom than me could posit a test that would have left the paint at the bottom.

    • @reina4969

    • @reina4969
      @reina4969 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Or... the fact is whatever coating the rust is "converted into" is just poor and there is no fixing a poor material coating. Which makes me think that POR-15 just adds something like plastic truck bed liner as a protectent.

    • @carlfesser6673
      @carlfesser6673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Paint is a great sealer. This test was more about preventing future rust, less about converting existing, so you're right that it didn't necessarily test the intent of the products.
      A test that showed the performance of a paint that says all rust must be removed prior to application would have better shown whether the products actually neutralized the existing rust.

      I did the bottom of my 90 Cavalier Z24 with that back around 2005. Red rusty metal primer with black enamel after a fairly complete sandblast ( on my back masked up the ugly way.). Undercoat sprayed after . By the next winter it was ugly with rust worse than before. I’d used rust oleum for many years prior to their taking the lead out of it with great results. Nowadays I annually spray the base and tape door drains let soak with 2” deep mix of used ATF / bar n chain oil and cheap petroleum jelly. It’s messy but seems to stop rust in its tracks as well as can be expected even in areas that can’t be gotten at .

    Testing of the products (especially shop items) is great. Oils, paints, welders, tools ...
    Probably the high quality brands like Rust Oleum do test their products. In the past I worked for a large chemical company, and they did extensive testing of paints and coatings in lab. They even had an outdoor testing area. They would put samples out there for years at a time like in a matrix of panels.
    You are reproducing that kind of testing on a practical level, its very useful for consumers.

They were rusted bad enough to where I looked into replacing them. Decided to paint with POR-15 and topcoat with Rustoleum paint. It's now been 23 years since I POR-15'd them and they are in great condition. I do repaint them every 6 or 7 years. The POR-15 just locked up the rust and they look better now then they did 23 years ago. Good Product! I've been looking forward to this test! I use POR15 for many automotive applications, from coating a gas tank to floor pans and the back side of panels. POR15 gas tank treatment requires removing loose rust, washing (their special solution) followed by etching (POR15 product) and finally the POR15 gas tank coating. It's amazing stuff - very durable and does a great job protecting.
    I've seen the results when people use other products. POR15 works the best and even though it's on the expensive side, the protection it provides is worth every penny.
    Thanks for the video - I'm so glad to see the results.

      Think it will work on fenders that keep starting to rust no matter how many times the body man keeps "fixing" it?

    • @gregkimura5906
      @gregkimura5906 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesnm21 I'm in the auto industry and the only way to properly fix rust is to cut it out and weld new panels in. You can delay the inevitable by coating both the back and outside of the panel with a rust converter (POR 15). It'll definitely slow down the rust.
      If your body shop uses a quality part, which is galvanized on the back, then does a good job installing and painting, you should get years of use from the part. The key is to make sure there are no exposed places where the rust can start - most times this is on the back of the panel or at the edge or screw/bolt hole.
      I grew up in Chicago and boy do I remember how quickly cars rusted. In fact, a couple years ago, I was on a cross country drive and I saw the rust damage to cars in Ohio and Indiana - very bad!
      Good luck and let us know how POR 15 works for you.

    been rebuilding a ford maverick for a couple years now. been through about 30 cans of the rust reformer and that stuff honestly is awesome. i always coat with rustoleum farm and implement low gloss black after it, and man, its been sweet hah.

    I’ve used POR-15 on a car about 12 years ago, and it has held up really well. It seals any potential for more rust from the air and elements.

    Absolute praise to you for the high quality content and the meticulous attention to details, design of experiments and process control. The POR looked like it went on quite heavier than the other coatings, and couldn't help but think of how this may have impacted the results. But while control of coating thickness would certainly be a variable, I don't know who that would be factored out especially when comparing spray vs. brush-on products. Keep up the outstanding work!!

    I've used the eastwood internal frame coating/fluid film on my one car that has never seen a winter since I bought it used. I have no complaints. I painted the frame the best I could with por15. No more rust has popped out. It wasn't bubbly rust just surface. Best looking midwest car its age around. Trying woolwax now on my winter/family hauling truck. Por15 is great just not in the sun.
