      Sooo, when I was 12 my mom was given a dresser very pretty white and detailed on the drawers. Well, I wanted that same exact pink colored you just did and I loved it. Now we passed it on to my daughter's and we didn't go back to the original white my mom did an antique look brown color. What I'm saying is we are all different and whatever color you like works some people just burn old furniture. =)

    This vanity is from 1980 so it is not an antique and isn’t even even a classic and it probably wasn’t even an expensive piece of furniture. She made it into something unique ... each to their own

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Yaaasssss, thank you, Thea! Some folks don't seem to understand that it wasn't that valuable of a piece of furniture to start with. It likely is more valuable now considering that most people prefer painted furniture over old brown furniture with scratches and broken trim. ;) If I were to sell it, I would definitely be offered more for a painted piece than a natural broken wooden vanity. :)

    Omgosh so many negative comments how exhausting. First off we are talking about a wood piece here that is only 20-30 years old not some Victorian era heirloom. So stop clutching your pearls. 2nd it’s 2018 and not everyone wants a room full of drab cherry wood. 1980s with its wood paneling is calling you! Hell maybe some of you should add some color into your lives to brighten up those crap attitudes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ You don’t like the content go start your own channel.

    Gorgeous!!!! Here's the thing about Upcycling Furniture pieces, it is at the discretion of the Upcycler to create something different, exciting, and inspiring. She has done ALL of these things. Now if this piece did not do any of those things for you and your taste, that's OK too. But is it absolutely Necessary to be so critical? Sometimes, it's OK to keep your harsh comments to yourself and just move on.

    I know this is really late but for those missing areas you can make a mold out of one of the existing pieces and make a replacement out of a variety of materials. Look up how craftsmen replace plaster molding in Victorian houses it's pretty interesting and you can use the technique to replace even very detailed pieces. Like on picture frames furniture or even use to make neat things to glue onto pieces you want to jazz up.

    Wow I’m just looking at the comments and I’m actually disgusted by the amount of people that feel the need to complain about something that they may not like. Wow you don’t like it move on to the next video. I am so sorry that people feel the need to degrade you for designing something that you seemed excited about! I hope that you put it in your house and I’m sure it looked very pretty because guess what it’s yours😂 I’m done ranting now❤️

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      You're so sweet, thank you, Thomas! I know....people online can be so uncouth. But the good part is that the more comments, the more likes (and even the dislikes) shows TH-cam that this is a project that sparks a response in people, so TH-cam will show it to more people. :) And from the stats, it looks like waaaaay more people like it than didn't like it. So that's a good thing! I am using the vanity in my basement crafting office as a sewing table! :) I love the way it looks!

And old desk that I love Oh and guess what I even PAINTED IT❤️ lol because it will be in my house since it was my grandmas who died in the 1990s (before people get mad it was already painted) I sanded it down and painted it white and black! It’s so pretty now thanks girl my grandma is probs proud of how it looks now thanks to you!

      Hey Thomas! Wow, that's awesome! I would love to see a picture of it! Email me a copy: serena@thriftdiving.com. And you are right--even the negative comments help this video get more reach so I try to let haters be haters and just allow the views to pile up. HAHA! Glad that you're fixing up your old furniture! It's a lot of fun and breathes new life into pieces that don't really "go" with today's decor.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Maroxa, you are right--people are cruel when they can hide behind screens, but they wouldn't have the guts to walk up to someone on the street or at a museum or a craft fair and say, "Hey, I think your stuff sucks." They know better and would be utterly embarrassed or appalled to even consider doing that. But online they can be as mean as they want because they think some large corporation uploaded or featured this. Nope, it was me. I'm a TH-cam channel of one person. I see and read it myself. :)

    Thrift Diving you did an amazing job, it is hilarious to read the comments of these pseudo wood restorers watching and commenting but doing nothing to preserve 20 year old "antiques". The piece was salvaged and came out beautiful, and the pink is actually very nicely matched with the wood top. Keep saving, repurposing, and inspiring the next generation of DIY'ers.

      Duece, yasss! Exactly! I'm thinking, "Okay, well, if you have a channel and can show people how you would restore an 'antique' 1980's vanity, then let's see it! I'll even be the first to subscribe!" :)

    Absolutely love this! Giving new life to an old piece that maybe out dated, even unsalvageable perhaps, or if it simply doesn’t fit/work with ones current decor design, I say there’s nothing wrong or “tabu-ish” if you want to paint it or add to it! That’s the beauty of owning a piece, it yours to love and enhance!!! And the beauty of being an artist, and yes Serena, you’re a brilliant artist, is that you created what “you” wanted to create which is a one of a kind piece that no one has. So to those that commented saying they’d never have done pink, that’s OK you’re not the one creating this piece of art, Serena is, it’s her masterpiece!! Can you imagine if Monet or Van Gough listened to others on their direction for “his” art, regarding color!?! I shutter to think! For those who commented oh I would have done this or I would do that. OKAY, great! Please show us your link for your TH-cam Chanel so we can check out your creative work....What’s that?! Ohhhhh, you don’t have one...Mmm hmmm... exactly. 😏

    I love your channel. What you did with this vanity is nothing short of amazing. I'm a woodworker at heart and Thomasville was quality furniture back in the 80s. Your wing back chair playlist has inspired me. I inherited a wing back chair through my grandmothers' sister in law. My earliest memory of this chair was of her mother (the sister in law) sitting in it. Every time we saw her she would give me and my sister a dollar each which bought a lot of candy bars at the time. She was so old, she had a son that died in the Spanish American War. I have owned and cherished this chair for years and it is need of a ground up restoration. So I did the only logical thing I could do. I pulled the trigger on a SE 625. I have to make preparations to do this right. Thank you.
    Have you ever thought of raffling off some of your upcycled pieces to raise money for charity?

      Lola Cookie I agree, If she had painted it green, people that hate green would have complained about the color. Same for people that hate blue, etc....Why is it so hard for people to just take things at face value? SHE painted HERS pink (I like pink), this wasn't ABOUT what color she chose, it was about learning the TECHNIQUE, then using that to paint our own "find" whatever color we want OURS to be. Common sense just doesn't seem so common anymore!😕

      I shop at Value Village and Unique Thrift (aka Savers). Sometimes things aren't priced quite so cheap, but this piece, somehow someone decided it was worthless and priced it so. And I scooped it up! :)

      Goodwill is my go to. Stuff is usually pretty rough, but usually pretty cheap. I redo a lot of furniture, don't think I've ever paid more than $5 for something. Actually, just two days ago, I found a solid oak secretary desk, pretty rough shape. The rolling top was missing, two drawers completely gone, pretty bad water damage to the desktop... after tax I paid 53 cents! Yes, I said 53 cent! Even if I can't save it, I just scored a bunch of oak for less than a buck!

    That is actually a writing table or desk. Whoever made it, turned it into a vanity.
    Painted furniture was popular in the 18th century.
    Most of it was copied from the palace furniture, which is why this style is called "LouisXV".
    The french word for it is "Bureau Plat".
    A dessing table from the 18th century would not look like this reproduction.

    • @derbykat411
      @derbykat411 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is French Provincial furniture that was not copied but began as a series of simpler and more affordable adaptations of the luxurious pieces of the Louis XV made for the monarchy. The furniture today are reproductions.

    I think this piece would work out beautifully in a sophisticated young girl bedroom. But if I had a piece like this in my own bedroom, I'd rather it to be classic, in dark wood. Its kind of disappointing but I like your technique. This is great for your portfolio, clients can see your creativity. Also, I think people should chill out. It's just furniture, if you want to have fun with it, you should. One day we all die, and everything we own stays behind. Good job

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Very well said, Ingrid! I like that you are respectful in your critique, but also point out that for my portfolio (or my project gallery), it shows a range of my creativity. If everything I refinished looked the same, it would get very boring indeed. This wasn't a family heirloom, and it wasn't an antique. It was a fun piece of furniture that made me smile and looks great in my basement office for holding my sewing machine. :) Thank you for the great comment!

      Great idea, Wendy! I would love to find a place for it in my bedroom! I usually work down in the basement where there are no windows, on my computer, but I would love to have a place to work upstairs in my bedroom where it gets good sunlight, on my laptop. Lying down in bed with a laptop isn't always the best idea. So having a pretty place to sit and work in my bedroom would be nice!

    My grandfather passed away in January, and my mother inherited his house and all the furniture. Most of it is quite nice-looking, in a similar style as this dresser. Now I have a pretty good idea of how to do a makeover and have a nice bedroom without keeping everything so dark! I love the details of the handles and wood carvings of those pieces of furniture, but the dark brown is a big no haha
    I don't particularly like pink, but this shade on this dresser is so cute!
