- By exploiting a number of Paper Mario glitches, it is possible to play sections of Chapter 8 as Princess Peach, nicknamed "Peach%."
Tricks discovered by the speedrunning community made it possible to play chapters out of order, making this glitch a possibility. Bonecrusher1022, r0bd0g, and I have tested numerous side effects over the years, and this video explains our discoveries.
It seems as though everything possible has been tested, but we hope to one day find a method of winning a battle or saving as Peach. When returning to the overworld from an encounter or reloading a save, we magically transform into Mario. Pulling this off would skip lengthy sections of the game, potentially saving time in speedruns.

Late reply, but kind of. In the first fight where he’s in front of the window, I believe it raises defense by 4-5. You can still deal damage while the star rods power is active since you have ultra boots/hammer and badges. The fight on the floating platform however…it’s infinite defense. You’ll never be able to pierce it without peach beam which makes sense. Kammy Koopa’s magic greatly enhanced bowsers strength

Setting up the glitch requires us to beat Chapter 6, so that's why it's not more :/
In a speed run just saving 1 second is considered good, a few minutes is godlike. Just by saving a few minutes you could potentially break a world record

The animation bug isn't TOO out of place, after all this is the same game where you can bake a cake for over 100 years and it's still delicious.
You should try hacking back an animation for Peach for the game to load, and see what happens when you eliminate the problem of missing animations.
As sensible as the idea is, this channel has thus far been pretty much about glitches and 'exploits' rather than interfering with the coding directly. At most, emulators were used to speed up things or do things in frame-perfect ways that are theoretically possible without hacking or cheat engines. I'm curious to see how far they can push things before something like that becomes the only other alternative... Frankly, I'm genuinely impressed by how much has been found here as is.

Does peach inherit badge effects, like she does HP? If so, you could pass along Pretty Lucky/Lucky Day/Defense Up badges to her to keep her hurt animation from playing.

if badges carry over, getting enough defense to ignore the damage could potentially work
Def Up costs like what... 6 BP in PM64? You would only have enough BP (if maxed) to equip 5 and assuming that badges do carry over to Peach, it can't fully block damage from Magikoopa and Bombshell Bills since they do 6 DMG, so a nonexistant animation will still play, crashing the game.

Not exactly "anywhere," as Peach cannot jump, but you could get to Star Haven, Toad Town, Chapter 1, Mt. Rugged, Chapter 3, Chapter 5, and Chapter 6 which would be super cool. I agree, a glitch to bypass those cannons needs to happen, but they're in the worst spot, and we have hardly anything to work with.

Why is this that surprising? It is just a thing that a relatively small group of people do for fun. The game is not even that old, is fairly long, and has a lot of weird quirks.
any game with a significant following will have a ton of glitches discovered over time (unless said game loses most of said following or said game is extremely well programmed). all it takes is time and people who want to find glitches.

In your Paper Mario in 1 Minute video, you said that the Virtual Console version of the game avoids some game crashes because of the way the emulator handles loading certain files. Perhaps Peach% is less crash-prone in VC?

It's kinda interesting that the developers didn't bother implementing a "If requested frame doesn't exist, load error texture or maintain current frame" fallback in missing frame contingencies. The absence of a graceful way of handling animation failures must have made the debug process harder than it had to be.

This kind of makes me wish there was a mod for Paper Mario that lets you fight enemies as Peach.
I have got to see Princess Peach make it to Toad Town. If Peach's HP is that of Mario's, would certain badges be inherited to her? What if Mario was equipped with badges to make attacks miss more often. What if during the battle with the cannons, their attacks missed every time? There has got to be a way to bypass the cannons. Has to be. I'd love to see Peach exploring the kingdom and finding a potential NPC who explains that they miss Peach. I don't know why, I'm just so fascinated with this potential.

This is probably a dumb question. But if Peach takes on the Health Mario has, would she also be able to take on the passive badge effects Mario has? In which if you grinded enough to the point where if you were Mario and had the Bump Attack badge on you could run into the canons to kill them, would the same work while using Peach? I know nothing about game glitching as whatnot so I have no idea.

It sounded like your usual (very good) straight and never-changing voice almost broke into laughter at the mention of the Koopatrol being too short to talk to Twink. I can't even blame you if so, that's just hilarious. Did you by any chance have to do multiple takes on that line?
I believe the first two bowser hits, Stomp and Claw, worked is because those attacks didn't require the player character to have animations, all they did for stomp was edit the y axis scale of the player. For claw, they just rotated the character around the y-axis and edited the colors values of the player object.

The Anti Guy & his animation frames are straight from the game, but this was made by TheSneakySpy. If I'm not mistaken, he pieced together a bunch of different frames to make him dance lol

To add to your question, while the animation frames are straight from the game, there are one or two that aren't used in the final release of the game, despite being in the game's data.
i love how it sort of gives peach animations for reactions to things in place of marios...soft of like that one time accidently I discovered you can fight the scary fish as tiny kong on n64; that was a fun day of stock footage collecting.
Off topic, but watching this in 1080p60 HD is literally the best thing ever. Paper Mario has never looked better.

Although, I and many others are wondering if Peach can inherit the effects of Mario's badges, so as to circumvent her hurt animations and/or poison damage by not being able to receive and/or status effects.
Hmm. Especially if Peach can use Badge effects, it would be wonderful if she could "inherit" the effect of Bump Attack! Well, assuming the way she encounters them would work to "Bump" the Bombshell Bill Blasters.
Alternatively, maybe someday there'll be able to find a way to make Peach hit a save block? Maybe some way to relocate it (such as to above a spring she can access, if there are any) or make her collide with one? I doubt it's possible, though....

Having got back from work, another thought came to mind. If the game interprets Peach as Mario in battle (since she's the one who gets attacked, shares his HP, and is first in the default turn order between her and Twink) is it possible to use Merlee's Spell to buff her?
I'm not sure Merlee's spells will affect Twink, since I don't remember if they affect partners in the N64 version, but would it be possible to RNG Manipulate one of Merlee's spells into being activated during a battle as Peach?
If the attack buff works on Twink, it could allow kills a little faster.
If the defense buffs work on Peach, maybe combined with badges, it would make it that much easier to stop her taking damage, and crashing the game.
Can Merlee's spell buffs stack?
Anyone have any idea how well all that could work?

Hey Stryder, Could you maybe try editing Bowsers stats with Origami (or whatever its new name is now) to 1 HP and 0 def and then try to fight him as peach?

Actually the issue is that it can't, Peach has no way of using Save Blocks, so they can't legitimately skip for Ch6 to Ch8 via this unless they find a new trick to it

Problem: Winning a Battle spits you out as Mario rather then Peach, the only way past would be to somehow dodge the fight entirely

I believe once the game thinks you're in chapter 8, you automatically get it.
yeah you'd have to either backtrack for it or play up until getting it and perform the glitch. (most likely the latter)
Wait, so in the footage ( 6:29 ), Peach uses the parasol on a Hammer bro, and becomes a Koopatrol. However, in the non-glitched game, there are Hammer Bros that you can use the parasol on, and Peach will become a Hammer Bro, instead of a Koopatrol. Why is this? Are the Peach segment and "Enemy" Hammer bros considered 2 different things by the game?
i know i am later but yes hammer bros you can copy ingame are considered npcs and hammer bros enemies are well enemies they also are considered 2 different entitys (sorry for bad english)
