I understand the point of view of more stuff in a game makes it last longer, but in my opinion, the extra stuff that game devs add needs to have some kind of meaning or substance behind it. I like galaxy 2, but the green stars are just a lazy way to pad game time in my opinion. Granted, Nintendo has been guilty of this before, case in point being 24 shine sprites in sunshine needing you to find all 240 blue coins in the game, which I would argue is more frustrating than galaxy 2's green stars. Overall though, I still prefer galaxy 1 way more than galaxy 2, although I concede that 2 is a great time.
@@JerryMcB3rry galaxy 2’s post game is still way better designed than the first game, which made you 100% the game twice. And you’re really not giving the green stars enough credit. I honestly prefer lots of small variation to few large worlds (Galaxy to Odyssey). Sure I’ll probably forget them easier as there is so many, but replaying the game will feel more fresh, whereas when I play Odyssey a fourth time around everything is almost too familiar. Just me, probably.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been my favorite game of all time ever since it was released, and unless it gets a sequel, it probably always will be. Given that I was about 8 when I first played it, I used to wonder if nostalgia was blinding my judgement, but playing it again showed that it’s really just that good. This game, it’s predecessor, and Odyssey are 3 of the few often considered masterpieces that I believe to truly be worth the praise they receive.
For me Galaxy 2 and super paper mario for the wii are always battling in my mind but I will always enjoy galaxy 2 more then the first and thats coming from someone who has completed both games
I can understand the doubt, or concern as childhood nostalgia can often trick us at times, but not so in this case. Galaxy 2 is also my favorite game of all-time, and I was 25 when it was originally released in 2010, and I played it. Hell, I still very much loved the game to pieces after I re-played it a few years later when it was re-released via Wii U eShop in 2015. Galaxy 2 is just a masterpiece.
I honestly prefer this game over the first Galaxy game, mainly due to it's level designs & gameplay structure. I love the first one but I feel the level designs in Galaxy 1 were pretty inconsistent at times. Sometimes it wants to be like 64, Sunshine & Odyssey by having sandbox-like levels, but then there are times where it wants to have linear point A to point B levels, as if the game can't make up its mind at times. Granted the majority of the levels in Galaxy 1 are linear point A to point B stages, but there's still a large portion of sandbox-like levels in that game that to me just felt like they didn't really need to be there in terms of what game Galaxy wanted to be. Galaxy 2 pretty much fixed this by having no sandbox-like levels (Starshine Beach being the exception for some reason) & focused more on linear platforming levels. To me Galaxy 2 just felt more focused than Galaxy 1 did in terms of what game it was trying to be, A grand, linear platforming game. But regardless I still love the Galaxy games despite the flaws it has, even though they're personally not my favorite 3D Mario games. (That would be Odyssey)
Agreed. Galaxy 2 just scratches that platforming itch in a more satisfying way than what Galaxy 1 did. Its a linear masterpiece in level design, and unlike 3D Land or 3D World, its one with aesthetics and presentation still feel majestic and epic.
Meta Shade I just gotta point this out but "sometimes it wants to be like 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey?" Odyssey probably wasn't even thought of in the slightest around the time Galaxy 1 came out my dude.
People always say that Galaxy is where 3D Mario got linear, but that was actually Sunshine. Think about it. Sure the levels themselves were expansive, but you had to complete the specific star you selected in the menu, and you have to do them all in order, and you HAVE to beat the first seven stars of each level to beat the game. It’s actually MORE linear than the Galaxy games because there are at least secret stars in Galaxy and they count toward beating the game.
Honestly my biggest complaint of galaxy 2 over 1 and the sole reason (besides nostalgia yadayada) I prefer the original is that 2 uses too much blue sky skyboxes. It just doesn't feel like space. Like in galaxy 1 the space junk galaxy looked like space and sounded like space but i don't get that feeling in galaxy 2.
This is why I prefer galaxy 1 over 2: I felt like galaxy felt a lot more grand. It had a proper plot with cinematic cutscenes and was made to be like a movie. Galaxy 2 on the other hand is just like "heres some backstory" and boots you into it. I have no idea why galaxy 2 redesigned so many minuscule elements such as the shape on colour of the crystals and the background. Thats another major problem I had with galaxy 2 - It was too light. Galaxy 1 had this darkness to it in both level colour and skybox colour, which made you feel like you were all alone in a giant universe. Galaxy 2 made it a lot more lighter and upbeat, which really destroys the atmosphere the first galaxy built up. Galaxy 2's levels felt really unmemorable and half of them felt like filler. They had cool ideas and all, but I will always prefer gusty garden over cloud court or whatever its called. I hate how linear galaxy 2 is, as there are less stars in each level, more one star levels and the world overview was way too linear for my liking. I liked in galaxy 1 being able to choose from 4-5 different galaxies that I wanted to go to, wheras in galaxy 2 they're just like "nope you have to do the previous one". The levels in galaxy 2 are also a lot more linear compared to 1, as I feel like galaxy 2 was going for more of a course clear design over galaxies attempt to blend course clear and sandbox. I completely agree with you on the power ups, as the drill and the rock mushroom both felt unnecessary and boring to use, and I absolutely love the could mushroom.
I completely agree. Galaxy 1 felt like this glorious adventure that I keep going back to and remember everything about, and 2 is great, but just feels a glorified expansion pack to me. It’s just Mario Galaxy with some new ideas, but without the story
I agree, but you have to admit, the second one is way better in the end half. I had so much fun collecting all the green stars, but collecting the same 120 stars again as Luigi felt like a chore. The perfect run also felt like the ultimate level while the secret level in the first one made me wonder why in the world I played the game twice. While I would say that the 1st one is a better game and more fun to complete through the 1st 120 stars, the second game is way more fun to 100%. I am talking from experience here since I finished both games with 100% completion.
I have a theory that Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are actually completely connected. What if when Rosalina reset the galaxy, that implied that it rewound back to the star festival, with a new string of events rather than meeting with Rosalina off the bat? This could tie up some plot holes: How Mario knew who Rosalina was, why he isn’t too unfamiliar and why he isn’t reluctant when he meets the first luma of the game, and why a galactic silhouette of Rosalina will offer her aid when Mario is having trouble on a stage, even before meeting her supposedly “for the first time.”
Brian Smith yes grandmaster galaxy is hell to get through, then for the final star they make you go through it with just one life. That was the hardest shit I’ve ever experienced in a video game.
It was the only level I've ever done that felt like hell to go through and made me slam my wiimote on the floor... I need more games with levels like that.
Honestly, Galaxy 2 and Odyssey are my favorite Mario games and favorite games of all time. Galaxy 2's amazing level design and fantastic music perfectly blend together to create an stunning game that I even prefer to Galaxy 1.
Yoshi in this game took me back to my SNES days with Super Mario World. It was like "hey remember being a kid? Here, this will make you feel like a kid again." There's a special unique feeling you get watching someone play something you can't beat which I still enjoy from time to time. I got to do that for my younger relatives as my older relatives did for my younger self on other games.
16:35 I would severely disagree. Super Luigi Galaxy was not only longer than the Green Stars, but also way more filler-y. The green stars at least added something. I can say that almost every level in Galaxy 2 has a legitimately cool and fun green star. And Galaxy 1's main game also has way more filler, because of the prankster comets. Galaxy 1's prankster comets consisted of Daredevil Comets - Just replay the same boss/level again, except it's harder - Filler Fast-Foe Comets - Just replay the same level again except it's faster - Filler Speedy Comets - Just replay the same level again except you have an incredibly forgiving timer - Filler Cosmic Comet - Race to the finish against a clone - Not Filler Purple Coin Comet - Either entirely explore a level again, slowly collecting purple coins, or have to collect them in an original context, with a time limit - Half Filler. Galaxy 2's prankster comets are much better, because A. the existing comets are basically all improved upon - Daredevil - still there but there's only a few of them Fast-Foe (now named double time) - Only used in a context that actually adds challenge Speedy - Half of them have a much more reasonable time limit, and other half have you collecting extra time throughout the level Cosmic - Absent, unfortunately Purple Coin - All of them are in the style of the good ones from the first game and B. There's a lot more variety, like the clone comets, and the "romp" ones.
I prefer the comet observatory, it was a lot bigger and more things unlocked the more u progressed, plus when u got the red star u could fly around. But that is just my opinion.
Galaxy 2 is my favorite Mario game of all time, if not my favorite game of all time. Idk why I have more memories with this then I do Galaxy 1, but I freaking love this game
I prefer one instead of 2 as well. The added lore, hub world, and darker presentation just made the expierence feel much more like an bonafide adventure and a true piece of art.

Meta Shade agreed smg2>smg1
same
Jaydenyeah I only brought Odyssey up just for an example
People always say that Galaxy is where 3D Mario got linear, but that was actually Sunshine. Think about it. Sure the levels themselves were expansive, but you had to complete the specific star you selected in the menu, and you have to do them all in order, and you HAVE to beat the first seven stars of each level to beat the game. It’s actually MORE linear than the Galaxy games because there are at least secret stars in Galaxy and they count toward beating the game.
Man, I hate it when the house spontaneously catches fire...

Yeah I bought the game in Japan and got that CD!
I did. I first thought it was a movie
The most underated TH-camr. Unique, funny, creative.
GCNMatt Sound like space? Did you have it on mute?
GCNMatt I agree! They play down the “Mario is in space” factor a ton compared to the first game
regirayquaza well sounds like sci-fi space renditions. Very ambient and echoey and almost alien.
I was making a joke about how there's no sound in space.
Don't ya love misunderstandings
This is why I prefer galaxy 1 over 2:
I felt like galaxy felt a lot more grand.
Apple Of Doom You definitely didn't completely agree with him on the powerups.
Galaxy 1 hub is better but I hate how you have to replay the game with luigi where as 2 had 120 stars then another 120 green ones which is way better
Just look at the first levels of each game. Massive difference

Yo Scott you forgot about the final final level, the ultimate test. That is one of the hardest levels in a Mario game
Yeme Machine I think you have to collect all Stars to unlock that level.
Brian Smith yes grandmaster galaxy is hell to get through, then for the final star they make you go through it with just one life. That was the hardest shit I’ve ever experienced in a video game.

TheMindOfThomas Galaxy 1 is better my guy
+Guled Mohamed His opinion, kid
Galaxy 2’s level design to me felt bland and uninspired. It was mostly flat areas of climbing the stage while galaxy 1 was all over the place
May 27 in Japan huh? Perfect planning.

Galaxy 1's prankster comets consisted of
Daredevil Comets - Just replay the same boss/level again, except it's harder - Filler
Fast-Foe Comets - Just replay the same level again except it's faster - Filler
Speedy Comets - Just replay the same level again except you have an incredibly forgiving timer - Filler
Cosmic Comet - Race to the finish against a clone - Not Filler
Purple Coin Comet - Either entirely explore a level again, slowly collecting purple coins, or have to collect them in an original context, with a time limit - Half Filler.
Galaxy 2's prankster comets are much better, because A. the existing comets are basically all improved upon -
Daredevil - still there but there's only a few of them
Fast-Foe (now named double time) - Only used in a context that actually adds challenge
Speedy - Half of them have a much more reasonable time limit, and other half have you collecting extra time throughout the level
Cosmic - Absent, unfortunately
Purple Coin - All of them are in the style of the good ones from the first game
and B. There's a lot more variety, like the clone comets, and the "romp" ones.
I prefer the comet observatory, it was a lot bigger and more things unlocked the more u progressed, plus when u got the red star u could fly around. But that is just my opinion.
Too bad this game doesn’t exist. Scott does have a vivid imagination.
