Can Mario Beat Every Boss at Level 1?

- What if we locked ourselves at Level 1 in Paper Mario? We start with 10 Heart Points, 5 Flower Points to use strong abilities, and 3 Badge Points for special moves and passive in-battle bonuses. By the end of the game, you can reach 50 HP, 50 FP, and 30 BP... but what if we stay at Level 1 the entire time?
It's definitely possible to take on every boss at Level 1, but we'll have to get creative to win!
There are many boss challenges throughout the game, and a lot of them have interesting mechanics. Take Huff N. Puff for example - each time he takes a hit, he'll spawn Tuff Puffs that deal damage and can be inhaled to restore health. Or Crystal King, a boss with multiple phases that adjusts his moveset according to his remaining health. Understanding exactly how these bosses function becomes crucial when placing additional challenges on Mario, and it turns out many AI patterns can be exploited.
Before taking on each boss, I drafted up a turn-by-turn strategy, making note of what badges and items to bring along, how much damage we've done at the end of each turn, how many Heart Points and Flower Points we have left, what move the boss will use on their turn, and whether or not blocking that attack is required. I also attempted to optimize each fight in order to defeat the boss in as few turns as possible, within reason. You could speed things up slightly with riskier moves but it probably isn't worth it. An example strategy used in this video looks like this:
Crystal King: Start at 10 HP. Mega Rush, D-Down Jump
Turn 1: Use Shooting Star; Electro Dash (9 Damage) (Summons Bits)
Turn 2: Use Egg Missile; Electro Dash (18 Damage) (Block Bit Spit x3)
Turn 3: Jump Combo; Electro Dash (31 Damage) (Summons Bits)
Note: We do not want to exceed 31 damage done in turns 1 - 3 because Crystal King has a chance to heal starting at 32 damage done.
Turn 4: Time Out (50% Chance to work, -2 turn modifier on Crystal King); Untimed Electro Dash (32 Damage) (Kills Crystal Bits and Stuns Crystal King)
Note: We needed at least 1 more HP of damage, but waited until after Time Out stuns the Crystal King so he doesn't have any chance to heal. An untimed Electro Dash is the fastest way to deal 1 damage in this case.
Turn 5: D-Down Jump (3 / 5 FP Remaining); Do Nothing with Watt (46 Damage Done) (Still Stunned)
Turn 6: D-Down Jump (1 / 5 FP Remaining); Do Nothing with Watt (60 Damage Done) (Still Stunned)
Turn 7: Jump Combo (70 Damage Done) (Dead)

I’d say a couple of the required fights in Chapter 6 and Crystal Palace were a lot harder, but it was more tedious than it was difficult. We just needed Star Power to use Star Storm, followed by Outta Sight, then Star Storm again to win
Mario waving his finger back and forth at the end of each fight isn't just to look cool, it's to reject the Star Points you get

It really stands out to me that Mario wasn't able to defeat Bowser at level one, but he WAS able to beat him at level ONE.
One difference is partners and badges
All he needed was Star Beam
And items
Bowser wasnt struck by lightning in the first fight
The real levels were the repel gels he made along the way.
Bowser: I am the final boss with strong, powerful attacks

Stomping is also effective against duplighosts because if they copy kooper because then you can flip them and win

You know, this is actually similar to a challenge you can do in the pro mode rom where if you talk to luigi in the castle during the prologue, he'll give you the option to have unlimited badge points, but never be able to level up.

This is what Peach intended Mario to do in the first place. This is literally Super Mario Bros. 1 with extra steps
This really shows how open ended the game is in terms of battle strategy. There is no one right way to win the game. You also don't have to worry about being underleveled, because there is always a clever solution.
This. I love how there's so many builds and strategies for Paper Mario and TTYD. I'm not familiar enough with Super Paper Mario yet but considering it's still got rpg elements I'm sure there's some crazy stuff you can pull off there too.
@@TheQuashingoftheTub Unfortunately, I think in SPM the pretty widely accepted fastest way to clear through enemies is also the easiest: just walk up to them and breathe fire on them as Bowser.

Hey Strider, I know this is unrelated to THIS video, but I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your "Poorly Translated Paper Mario" series. Paper Mario was (still honestly is) one of my favorite game series, and recently I've been going through a really bad depression. Sometimes all you need is a really solid, legitimate laugh to break free and every single video had me laughing my ass off in a way I haven't for months.
I know this post is kinda huge but seriously, thank you so much.

She's been very depressed lately, and more than once she was on a shitty day, and then Stryder posted a video, and we watched it and laughed, and it would cheer her up, it was really good.
The edit of other youtubers on the same game sadly didn't work for us.
So, thank you if you read this Stryder, you made us really happy for a while, and that's really important.
As someone with depression myself, I find it's important to make yourself do things you would normally enjoy. Good to hear that you're doing well. Stay strong.

Haha, wish I had this as a kid lol, but actually, being under leveled in Paper Mario led to one of my favorite memories with my grand father. :) he owned the N64.
I ended up running from most fights, leaving me very underleveled. I got to bowser, but time and time again, I’d get to phase 3 but could not win.
I guess RNG was finally on my side. Probably 60+ attempts later, over the course of months (because I only stayed at his house on rare weekends)
I was finally able to beat it one day, and I ran downstairs to tell him. I remember saying “Grandpa! I beat bowser!!!” And he said “No. No way!” And he got up and ran with me to his room to watch the ending we worked SO hard for.

Interesting point about master: he's especially weak to mini, so abilities like shrink stomp are massively useful when trying to defeat him at lower levels.

It's runs like this that make me wish games had challenge run options built in. Level 1 challenges, randomizers, shufflizers, would all make for a ton of fun and add the phrase "Replay Value" so many companies are looking for.

Well you don’t even have to touch the exp system in final fantasy x the sphere grid ( you can just never up your stats and yes it’s possible to beat the game this way). Basically if you have to allocate your stat increases in a separate menu you don’t have to in most video games( though it isn’t always possible to beat the game this way) sure you aren’t level one but stats wise you have all the same stats as a level one character. And bravely default just lets you turn off exp ( or double it if you wanna grind).

Optimising the most amount of damage with so little HP is a very fun task to watch unfold.
What about the level 0 challenge? You use chet rippo to lower Mario's HP to 5 to increase BP, then you only increase BP on level ups and cannot equip any badges.
We're currently doing that on my Twitch livestream! Though I recently learned the challenge is called Level -1

@@spongefan155 you werent in the stream were you? There was a huge bit war over having slow go on or not. It was on rather often, and at certain points the lead was flipping so much that just going into the menu every time to turn it on and off was taking more time up then just wearing it.

You have to appreciate the passion that went into building this game. The original concept of a paper world, every gesture, animations from a character winking to a hyper goomba flying like a cannonball to even Mario sticking his tongue out because the fire pop was too spicy xD
I love this game and this fanbase.

Every fight past the prologue fights were very impressive.

When I read the question in the title of the video, I thought to myself, “maybe some of them but not everyone.” 47 minutes later, im genuinely surprised that it could be done. Great video!
Fun fact: The bosses actually are coded to give you a HUGE amount of star points at level 1, even though it is impossible to get to them at level 1 by normal means.
It's based on the difference between your level and the enemy's level. Same level is 2, goes up or down by 1 every 2 levels of difference.

I never knew monstar even did damage for the longest time because for the entire game I always had the badge that gives you a defense point. So monstar did absolutely 0 damage without guarding but I forgot I had the badge. I also ran away when they gave you the option because I needed to heal up thinking it would be a huge fight.

Man I appreciate the videos you make. Its interesting how you learn so much you can and can't do in this game from just repetition. I can't imagine loving a game so much I play it over and over again.

Probably a more simple one, but I was in awe of the Kent C. Koopa fight. I've played this game countless times and did not know you could target his tail. My mind was blown.
The Spin Smash badge also does numbers on Kent.
