4:30am:
Opened my laptop, account was de activated. Thought it was just another IT problem, so didn't think anything of it.
5:00am
I usually check my emails while on my autopilot commute to work (1hr 30min drive)
Email read: "Unfortunately as a result, your position has been eliminated by this restructuring."
5:05am
Texted my manager, but he said "everyone got it, we'll get more info later"
5:50am
Tried to badge in, and the security guard took my badge and told me I was laid off
6:00am
Sat in my car in disbelief.
Tesla timeline:
07/22/2019 - 04/15/2024
About 5 years at Tesla. Half a decade!
At one point in 2023 I was even sacrificing sleeping in my car on work days just to avoid commuting to work. Showered at the factory and slept in the parking lot. Microwaved dinner in the break room.
Sacrificed a lot for the company. But this is just a small part of a chapter that is ending, and there’s a whole book waiting to be written. I’m only 29 years old and have a lot more career time in me.
I went from Production Associate, to Lead Production Associate, to being a Production Supervisor. Starting from the very bottom and worked my way up. Learned a lot of adapting to the ever-changing environment, to working with less but getting more done.
In the middle of my career, when I was a lead, I met the most funny and humble supervisor named Louie Afusia. Louie taught me about delegating, following up, and finishing through. He used to tell me: “listen to the people, not against them.” I even played semi pro football with him one Spring season. But he taught me a lot about leadership, and i’m glad to have met him in my career at Tesla. He was this huge Somoan USO, that had a good heart.
Louie passed away in 02/2023. He’s gone, but not forgotten.
How you make something last forever is you inspire the next generation and then the next. Always leave the place better than you found it.

Don't let it get you down. I was laid off twice as an engineer and twice as a patent attorney. I am almost retired now. Just keep moving forward.
I’m a retired attorney. Enjoy the last few years and MAKE SURE you have cultivated something to suck up all the hours and hours of time you’ll have on your hands. Something that doesn’t involve alcohol, preferably.
I now play the guitar, sew, garden, walk the dog, and spend waaaayyyy too much time on youtube! 😂
And yes, I’m a guy - fabric and flowers haven’t been only for girls for decades. Fun to go out in sweats and t-shirts that I made myself. Especially when I get compliments. 😊
@@whatifschrodingersboxwasacofin Good luck! I just retired 2 days ago. I worked on IT for 42 years. Still letting everything sinking in. Tomorrow i will do some guitar playing, renewing my passport in order to do some travelling.

Moral of the story: These companies ain't loyal.
It's not so much about loyalty ..have you ever owned a business?..what are you supposed to do when you are loosing money and don't have the money to pay someone?
That's the first mistake that most ppl make...thinking companies will be loyal.
This is not new. Companies that hired you directly from high school and you could count on retiring with a pension are long dead. Be your own job security. Don't climb someone else's ladder - build your own.
@@Jeremya74 Lol, but Elon wants his $50B in compensation!
They're not charities.
Man, you camped in your car to do 12+ hours shift for a year and this company doesn’t even bother to have a proper process to lay you off!? That’s straight up trash
He needs to sue
Disgusting! Not a good look for Tesla, but I would NEVER buy an EV anyway.
Union representation would have steered the process in a humane way.
That's every company though, we are all just numbers. I learned this early on in life. They will lay you off in a heartbeat and not bat an eyelash or lose a minute of sleep about it. Actually they usually get rewarded with layoffs and management gets a bonus for doing so because it saves the company money.
More like 5 years at Tesla, I think he said.... He was forced to make tough decisions - we wish him the Best, as he seems like a straight up kind of person
Being a production supervisor and having a security guard be the first one to tell you you're fired is crazy.
In the video he mentioned he received an email regarding his termination. He read it while on his drive to the facility. He just didn't believe it when he read it.
@@alanrussell6678But then he texted his supervisor and he confirmed it and said everybody got one. I don’t get why after that he said might not be true and continued to try 🤷🏽♂️
I commuted 2-3 hours each way for 2 years. It ruined my health, my life, couldn’t go out, see family, nothing. I took a pay cut to work in town. Best decision ever.
Yeah that commute is insane you're not thinking clearly if you are doing 3 hours of commute a day plus that's probably close to 200 miles a day on the car
Yeah, I thought Uber was making those people drones to transport
My commute was about the same and I did it for 6 years. I still remember the morning I realized I was done. I no longer make as much as I did with that job but my health and peace of mind is so much better now.
This is pure facts.
That’s a lot of “commenting”
I’m 41, quit my job 2yrs ago and went traveling. In those two years I learned that nothing truly matters, your car, your house, your life style there are people living with a lot less.
Good point
What did you decide to do after traveling? Back to a similar job?I’m about to turn 41 myself and thinking about taking time off for more traveling
Doesn’t traveling cost money?
True! I went to Bali last year September i felt the same thing you did
People living in shacks but smiling with a good heart
Do you have kids ?
I feel genuinely very sorry for people who clearly dedicated themselves to a job, only to be treated this way. The ugly truth is that... the security guard at the door who wouldn't let you in, likely cared far more about you being laid off than the person who chose to lay you off. You deserve better. We all do. And there's nothing wrong with saying so. Wish you all the best.
My Dad told me if you can ever get a Government job take it. You may not make a lot of money, but you will have a job. I followed his advice as a machinist and now have a wonderful retirement.

Smart advice. Government ALWAYS expands, you NEVER hear of layoffs. Could be why our taxes are so high…………..

Idk about this advice. If you have a mediocre mentality then…. Yes
This is how a company rewards loyalty. Always put your interests above the company.
Companies exist to make money for stockholders. You want loyalty? Get a dog.
Loyalty and generosity are considered character flaws in the U.S today.
@@firemarshal17 That sure wasn't what Elon wrote in his master plan.
Corporations give a lot of Lip Service but at the end of the day, you have to be loyal to yourself. Corporations really don’t care about the employees. Job security is your ability to go out and find another job. Best wishes.

My brother commuted and hour and a half to work and back for 15 years. 3 hours a day in car. He is also on salary and always gives it 110% and consistently puts in an hour or two overtime every day.
13 hour days, 2 kids in sports... Weekends full, weekdays full...
Many unsung heroes out there working their tails off.
I hope all of you out there like this find some rest and peace in retirement.
Its a hard grind and it is taxing for sure.
Sorry to hear that bro
Sometimes that grind is actually what keeps you going. Know a lot of people who worked their ass off, rose up fast in their 30s, no kids, and now are just... burned out and not sure what to do with their life. They "made it" and nothing else is pushing them! So if your days are full, and you're on that grind, it aint the worst thing.
It's a problem if it's the grind that keeps you going, because then you will never find out what should keep you going when the grind ceases.
I was layed off from BofA after 10 years. Discovered being a Full Time RVer.It's been almost 7 years now. Thanks to Starlink, I can work remotly from almost anywhere. BEST LIFE EVER!!!

Never think you are indispensable. I worked at a utility company in different departments almost 30 years. My spouse and I always saved half our earnings so that if we lost our jobs we would not be devastated. We worked together, and accomplished so much. We retired with almost 2 million dollars. We paid off our home and cars before retirement. Make a plan , calm down and don't allow yourself to overspend. I hope that helps. Take care of yourself!!!!

The best thing my dad taught me was to be a tight wad with my money. Only drawback women don't like it! My mom left him when I was 7 for being a tight wad! However he died wealthy and mom passed completely broke or damn near. I don't mind sharing just don't want to be "used" like many men are today. My son's mother left me when he was just 3 but I believe it maybe probably primarily because most women well have "changed" and not for the better unfortunately. God help us as I know men and women need each other. 🙏
Tesla really lost a good employee, so they have no right to complain about the quality of the workforce. Nico, keep your eyes and ears open for every opportunity, and this moment in time is actually an eye opener, and now you will be out and about instead of locked up in a factory all day. You will do well, young man. Good luck. I'll be watching❤
we only know one side of the story here.
@double-you5130 to be fair, his explanation was sincere, and without cussing or naming except the security guard and an email, it'st not fair
Thank you for sharing. One of the best things that’s ever happened to me was being laid off. It allowed me time to heal physically and mentally. Being laid off doesn’t define you; it’s merely a chapter in your journey. Use this time to reinvent, learn, and emerge stronger than ever. You’ve got this!
It's so hard for some people near the bottom.I'm fortunate I can afford not to work. Many people are a week away from real distress.
That's the positive side, negative side I'll be broke as heck, probably lose my house, wife, and kids. Easier said than done.
Right! it's all perspective at the end of the day
Your Tesla hat? Cap it. Put it in a box and forget about it.
Battery change? Every EV will be difficult to sell if technology speculations are correct.
But thinking of Tesla profits and listening to Tesla throwing great staff out? Wow. That's crazy.
You said the craziest thing I've ever heard. "I work 6:30am to 6:30pm, but sometimes the job requires me to work over". 6:30am to 6:30pm is 12 hours, that's already way over. Be thankful they let you go. There's no amount of money they can pay you that is worth sacrificing your life in that way. I would serve fast food for minimum wage before I would commute 3 hours and work minimum 12 hours days.
I used to work 12 to 16 hour days along with weekends. It was really difficult to have family time. I switched to working 3 days a week from home now. I have gained over 40 hours a week with family. I can frequent the gym, go biking, work in the garden and hang out with my kids when they get home from school.
Military is 12 hour shift everyday including weekends on deployment. No OT pay @ 25k salary. Civilian 12 hour shift is a walk in the park.

After a week I was on a plane to Thailand and have been living happily on my savings for the past 2 months focusing on my health and updating my skillset.
Best thing to happen to you. Twenty years ago I worked for Sony, until layoffs. Move to a Microsoft/Qualcomm company (Wireless Knowledge), got laid off. Moved to Kyocera, got laid off. It's crazy how companies can ask you for a 2 weeks' notice before you leave, but treat some of their best employees like crap by canning them on the spot. Best of luck to you on your future endeavors my man. 👍🏾
That's the operative term is "ask". You obviously don't owe these companies anything. When you're ready to go just go because when they are ready to dump you they will do it instantly.

I was in all those meetings and once I moved into management and seen how things were looking I was out ✌️
You set a great example by being positive in a tough situation. Your next company is going to be lucky to have you.
Don’t give up the house! Rent out a bedroom, possibly convert the garage to a rental unit, and screen those renters very carefully. You might cover your entire mortgage payment until you find another job.
Or you might get a house full of squatters who hide behind Governor Newsome and get to live in your house for years rent free!
Or he can live in his car and rent entire house out. Passive income is awesome.
I agree. Surely he'll be better off building equity in this house rather than spending five years living out of a car?
@@danielrice5474 Renting out a house is not passive income, that is false, alot of things can go wrong.
@3777177 are you restarted? If someone else is at the minimum paying his mortgage then that is money he has in his pocket for other things, he already said he throwing more money into stocks so it would be passive and a smarter idea than selling and wanting to buy in 5 years time when he's priced out again.
I was just Laid off from Black Bear Diner. I was a General Manager and I had a broke foot. They did not want to accommodate light duty, so they dug for a way to terminate my employment. Companies are unethical and corrupt.
Sociopathy. You'll will see it in action among members of management. They have sold their souls.
They look for anything now to keep control of you. That's why I tell people to keep your personal business out of the company as much as you can. A friendly advise from an almost 30years veteran in the auto industry:
NEVER assume next week will be like this week and things will be "normal" forever.
ALWAYS assume bad things will happen and go vernment is there to screw you.
YOUR PRIORITY should be YOU and your family.
With that in mind, based on what I have learned in almost 30 years:
1 - Don't waste the $ you make working in depreciating things (like a car), INVEST your $ on things that will bring PASSIVE INCOME in order to achieve a passive income that is greater than your salary as soon as possible.
2 - Work on yourself in order that you will have your own business, if they are paying you $120K/year it is because what you produce with your work is worth way more so why not keep all the $ for yourself?
3 - Be prepared for bad times (lay offs, high inflation, diseases, accidents, etc).
4 - If you need to finance something that means YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT.
Words of the wise!
The “go vernment” didn’t screw Tesla, Elon Musk screwed Tesla. The “go vernment” gave him billions in tax breaks and subsidized his car sales with additional billions. The “go vernment” did everything it possibly could to help Musk succeed and he STILL screwed it up, because he’s an idiot, and now everyone can see it.

He bought a membership at a 24hr gym so he could park his truck over night and shower without being hassled. He later bought an old sailboat for less than $10k that came with a slip. Slip rent was $300 a month. You weren't allowed to stay on the boat over night, but he would. So, there are options out there especially if you're single. He lived on the sail boat for several years. I was working for a for profit school that claosed its doors in 2019. They sent me a 15 celebartion gift and the next day they closed the school. I could not be upset because everyone had been fired. Layoffs had started 5 years earlier and everyone knew it was coming. I was just lucky to make it to 63 in the job. Companies dont care about you and I hope this guy wakes up.

I don't drive a Tesla. I drive an old Honda. If I get let go by my work, nobody is coming to repo my car. It's paid off. Also, if I get laid off, I'm not worried about how I'm going to pay my bills. I took the money I didn't spend on getting cars likeTeslas and invested it over the years. You do what you want. I sleep good at night.
Humility is golden. Sometimes we see I, I, I. When it's God. God. God. Just because you're blessed and are protected doesn't mean someone else didn't do something right. It just means their battle is different than yours.

I got fired many years ago, so I started my own business, Guys like you are too motivated to work for someone else, take what you know and like and GO for it
I got laid off and the next job 6 months later paid double what I had been making! You seem like a real nice guy so try to look forward not back but it is nice to vent.
What kind of job do you do now?

First thing I would do as laid off Tesla worker is no longer promote their brand. Throw that Tesla hat in the garbage and move on. As far as the car you may have gotten a deal but time to cash out and build a new identity once you have a new job. Also, living in Commiefornia is lunacy. Lastly never take a job more than 1 hour commute from home unless on a temporary badis. That's not living it is just existing.
I hear you but as a fellow Californian there are often many reasons you can't move, family, a business, etc. There are islands of sanity here (north San Diego county where I am, not too bad). Most all corporations operate like this, am disappointed they didnt do a more respectful process though.
Why many people seem to be moving to Texas,Colorado and Nevada. The cost of living and housing in California is just beyond ridiculous.

Don't bang yourself up to much.... I got a pink slip on a Friday afternoon, after I got done training my replacement , out of no where. I had no idea I was training my replacement and well it was scary as hell... At that time, I was a middle school math teacher. Needless to say, I ended up joining the military, found out I was good with computers, got my second degree in computer science, and ended up as a project manager for two programming projects... There were two things that kept me sane : 1. Bad things still happen to good people 2. Even though Tesla laid you off, you still acquired skills from that job that can be used in your new job
I got laid off with thousands of people from a great job in 1985 working at Carrier Air Conditioning factory in Syracuse New York. The whole factory and support business all shut down destroying central New York. At the time I had a young wife and 3 kids. I was devastated 😳. A month after, I visited my cousin in Los Angeles for a few weeks, scouting for work. The 1st day I found a job making 2.5 x the salary I was making in New York. I quickly moved my family to LA. My wife, family and friends were sad we were moving but you couldn’t get a job even delivering pizza 🍕 in upstate New York at this time. Today all is well, my kids are grown and successful, I’m retired, still working part time and enjoying life in with everyone in beautiful Southern California. Get a new job ASAP move to the work as you always need Cash Flow, the life blood of living today. Love and Blessings brother ❤️🙏😎
Lived in Syracuse from 2013-2017. Everyone told me it was once a great city and repeated the Carrier story.

This plant has a way of turning people’s lives upside down. Happened in ‘82 when GM shut it down. Happened again in 2010 when NUMMI shut it down. But both times, it was much different than this, employees got advanced notification. GM allowed their employees to transfer to other plants. NUMMI gave us 8 months notice and offered retraining and job search assistance and retention bonuses for those who stuck around until the end. I guess this is the new way when Tesla has a reduction in force. Best wishes in your new adventures!
I remember having relatives and friends going through the GM layoffs in Los Angeles. GM paid for technical training courses at ITT. So a bunch of employees took IT courses and got into that field. Sucks how Tesla just let their employees go. I wonder what is the severance package if any?

Don't let it get you down. I was a key account rep for a major multi national, got laid off with a corporate buy out. Then I got another job and a year later same when new employer was bought out. So I looked for a job I would like to do and requalified as a tour guide. I started working for myself. I started in a VW Rabbit taking tourists, the an 8 seater. I created a job out of nothing. It was the best job I ever had. When I retired I was the top preferred supplier for the city of Cape Town. People paid me to enjoy myself.
Thanks for telling your story. You will succeed in life because you have never give up positive attitude and are dedicated to what ever you do. Tesla on your resume will open doors for you. I am in the finance field and worked in Silicon Valley for about five years, it was a great experience, it was all good, even the tough times. For a couple of years, I lived in an RV sometimes parked next to Google headquarters, although I did not work at Google. I prepped food at work, took advantage of the free meals that the employer offered from time to time and ate the left overs and showered at the company. I also was laid off a couple of times, but I always found work and eventually got into better positions. After being laid off during the 2008 economic crash, I moved to the Sacramento area for temporary work. When that term finished, I moved to LA. Then I moved back to Silicon Valley for a few years. Now I am in a senior financial reporting position living in LA but working remote for a company in San Diego.

I am 66 years old. Commuted 2.5 hours every day into Chicago for over 30 years. If you want to get ahead of the rest, you gotta do it. You have a good attitude and we're very professional not to knock Tesla. Things change with companies and tough decisions are made. The least favorite part of my job was closing offices. But all those people ended up with better positions.
You will do fine. You have a great attitude and demeanor. Stay positive.
I am not sure that living in your car is the answer. And only 5 years in the market is not going to make you wealthy. That's takes a much longer time and that money you invested is the very last thing you touch. You don't want to live on it unless you're forced to. Find a place that you can afford and try and have three-six months of cash in the bank in case something happens again. And it probably will. It's the world we live in. Live within your means. I am seeing to many people buying homes, and cars that they really don't need. My first mortgage interest rate was around 14% back in the 80's. So I bought what I could afford.
Keep up that smile and attitude, you'll land on your feet. Nothing comes easy in life! ❤
No offense but the world you began working in is not the same as it is today. Also, you likely ended your career during the best 10 year market run in history.
😊@@SurpriseMeJT
Do you have any idea of the cost of housing in California?
14% in the 80’s. Cool, what is the average household income vs median housing cost?
It doesn't work that way anymore.
College debt, housing prices & cost of living have made that dream a thing of the past.
Skip college, learn a trade. Be your own boss & Gen Z's, you'll have a better shot.
But don't buy into boomer propaganda that keeps you in a hamster wheel.
And why would you want to go to college when the university presidents are calling in the cops to beat students when they protest their university dollars supporting genocide?
You will ruin your health. That’s not the way. Find another good paying job in LA or Orange County area. Find a girl, socialize and you’ll be much happier. Whoever influenced you to ‘beat the system’ doesn’t mean you well. It’s a desperate move and 5yr return in stock market doesn’t guarantee anything. Peace ✌🏻
He can find a girl in his 30's, for young people in your 20's that's the best time to try a number of different things where you can afford to make mistakes and still have time to try again. Once in your 30's, 40's and 50's then you can do all the other things.
Nope. You’re wrong on this. Girls want financially stable man. Can’t be that in California without getting financially free. 5 years is a simple trade to be free.
@@paulkieffer1189nobody is going to want to date someone living in their car
@@paulkieffer1189 assuming that a hobby trader could actually make money in 5 years is stupid. You would run out of money, fall behind on payments, and lose your life’s savings. Only real, professional traders can actually make money on the market and people who tell you otherwise are trying to sell a scam.
Even if you don’t invest, just purely saving the money and in 5 years, you’ll be ahead of the game.

As a 69-year-old guy, I can tell you it has always been tough for most people. I was from Detroit where people were always getting laid off. You just have to decide what is most important to you, and right now you are young so you may not know yet. Housing and bills have always been there but I think there are more options now for people. You can buy or build a small place off the grid and still have the comforts of life. I lived and traveled in a van camper for over a year and it was great. I wasn't working during that time so it was like a long vacation. Good Luck...
This story has my name in it! After 25 years I lost my job, I managed to pay off my house in San Diego, but just the property taxes and monthly bills are making me want to go live in my van or to a cheaper state or country… Absolutely no loyalty from companies.

This is why I moved out of CA in 2023. The grind, the cost of living, the insane taxes. It was no longer worth it. Born and raised in CA all my life too. screw CA, people are fake and to be honest change of season is nice. There are prettier places ALL over this country as well. Nothing special about CA.

My son went to Alabama and majored in EE. It was hard but he loves his job. He has been out over 2 years. He works with the Air Force on air launched weapons.
When you are employed, get an apartment close to work. A long commute is the biggest reason people leave a job. I had a 20 minute commute, but regret not getting a house closer to work.
My son is a mining engineering student. My advice to him (and now to you even though you didn't ask 😂) is finish school, get a job, live below your means, save, invest, travel, meet many people from all walks of life, stay out of unnecessary debt and buy a house. If you ever get laid off or feel the need to quit a job you hate then it will be very easy to do. At the very end of the list is getting together with someone. Make sure your goals align and think very hard about whether ypu want a traditional lady or modern girl. Do Your best and forget the rest. You got this
