When a company goes bankrupt, there no longer is a company to open source anything. Companies should be required to escrow the documentation so that in case of bankruptcy users still have access to it. Or heck, make it available anyway, because it's literally your paying customers who need it to fix their piece of trash you sold.
any product or part that is no longer maintained or produced or sold by original manufacturer should be released as open source. All stuff, CAD file of mechanical parts, source code for software, schematics of boards. That's how a more sustainable world could be made.
Last fall at Cars & Coffee in Great Falls, VA an older gentleman pulled up and proudly parked his Fisker. He bragged about how he had the first one in the Washington D.C. area. I was with my pals and I said “You know what happened to Fisker the last time right?” He said “Not this time!” Mind you he was bragging he paid $68k. Haven’t seen him at C&C since…
The original Fisker Karma is a great car. Especially if you have the tools to fix the expensive things on the cheap. It really makes sense to get a $20k Karma and enjoy it, especially if your commute is a short one. A big warning is that the CSP for Fisker are very closed about sharing any information or details of repair/service. I had to start a TH-cam channel to get information out there to Karma owners. The Fisker repair community (literally 7 dealers, he wasn't kidding), tried everything they could to get me to stop posting information on battery repair and a few things that commonly fail. I also was able to upload and link the original factory repair manual for others to use for FREE. They WERE NOT successful in stopping me, and thankfully I have a nice series on battery repair and answer all questions quickly! I really wish people would start working together on things and stop the money grabbing for every little piece of information that should be public domain.

I'm feeling kinda sad for Fisker. They had some really interesting models in the works & I really like the smaller SUV formfactor of the Fisker Ocean. Hope they make it out alive & do better in the future.
It's kinda looking like Tesla isn't far behind. Their per car profits used to be 30%. With the price cuts, they're making 5% which is less than the legacy car makers who average around 9%. They don't have anything new in the pipeline at this point.
@@quademasters249 I wouldn't worry about Tesla, they have their loyal fanbase & are the uncontested leading electric car brand that actually still make money on their cars. Many other big car companies are really struggling right now. Take Ford for example; Their EV division lost almost 5 billion dollars last year & it looks like this year will be even worse considering they sell so few EV's they stand to lose more than 130.000$ per sold car. This is just one example, I think Lucid motors lose more than twice as much per sold car so they might be the next to go...Rip.

I think that they didn't really do away with Mercury. They just stopped making what had previously been called "Lincoln" and started using that name for what had earlier been called "Mercury". Of course it has been a very long time since there was any substantial difference between any of the three brands.
My biggest concern would be parts availability 5-10 years from now. If they were maybe $5,000, someone could buy 2 or 3 and cannibalize parts off the others. I don’t see the prices coming down that far anytime soon, maybe ever.
5-10 years down the line, how about now? A woman had her ocean scrapped after a door was damaged and fisker had zero parts available, so the insurance company had to write it off. Fisker is already a nightmare car to own regardless of what Rick thinks.
an instrument cluster in front of you is for safety. you aren't taking your eyes off the road too much to look at it for useful information, like your speed to make sure you aren't speeding and in big digits that are displayed at all times.
I hear you but on the tesla model 3 it feels like there is less eye movement to see it than a traditional dash screen. My peripheral vision is better for seeing the road than looking down through the steering wheel I feel
Sure, but let's be real, that's not really the case. If that is such a big issue, what happens when you need to change the temperature? Get a screen notification? Have to look out the side, or take a long blink when tired. Glancing to the side is more of a hassle that you live with than a safety concern. And anyway, regarding speeding, you've got other cars on the road to compare too (which i know many Americans drive by), speed limit warnings or automatic speed control. And, glancing slightly to the side isn't the end of the world. Again, i 100% would like a heads up display, but after the first few days of driving, your habits change.
Tbh glancing at the cluster or off to the side doesn't make a big difference. The only time I care about my speed is when I see a cop or am setting cruse control. There's no safety reason to know your speed.
Fisker Automotive made the Fisker Karma and Fisker Incorporated makes the Fisker Ocean. Same name, same man, SAME EMBLEM, different company. One went bankrupt in 2013 and the other will go bankrupt in 2024.

OK. So, I now found an Ocean One that has the build sheet at $71k and it's for sale at $26k with 2000 miles and has 2.0 installed and the vents replaced. Very very tempting at that price. Plus a tax advantage as my state does not charge sales tax for private part sales and no documentation fee from an owner. That will save me $3700 in those cost. So, I am super tempted.
25K would be worth it for the kwh in the battery alone practically, it's actually cheaper than battery storage solutions per kwh and comes with a car attached lol. But that's not a survivable thing for Fisker to sell, that's liquidation mode.
- not just cheaper - mind blowing price destruction. (with an adequate control system). (113kWh for $25k - near wholesale cell price) Plus spare parts to repair the other 3 still on the road.
Rich I kind of feel like you live in a different world. Your comment regarding most people that have eevee's have backup gas cars so if there's an issue with the fisker they have a backup car until their physical gets fixed is absolutely ridiculous. You have backup cars, Samcrac has a backup car Matt Armstrong has a backup car Tavaris has a backup car. Even people who are financially doing okay don't have backup cars. That was a really stupid comment.
Yeah I think alot of people have two guys especially car guys even if it's a beater mainly because people are financially irresponsible when it comes to cars

As a Fisker owner whose car is inoperable and was given no timeline on when the car will be fixed, I’m eagerly awaiting for independent shops to get the software needed to diagnose and repair these vehicles.
Well, someone, maybe you, just needs to figure out what mix of parts it is, cars are like legos, it will 99% not be anything custom. IE. for fisker karma you also do not need special diagnostics, but it is chevy volt + ford mondeo 4 + ford focus + ford fusion phev + for fusion duratec + saab 9-3 to connect to pretty much all the system. Same will be here, just takes time to find out, or you can wait for someone to do it for you. It is not just click done, so do not expect car repair shop to be able to do it. ... well now I have written this, it occurred to me, that Tesla is pretty much the only exception running mostly custom stuff.
Do you have a hunch of what’s making it inoperable? Is it on the data, electric, or mechanical side? I know you might not know just interested and seeing what’s making not possible to diagnose.
I absolutely agree, Fisker Ocean is an amazing first-off car, and software can be updated.... unless, you know. If I was in the market now I would absolutely consider a Fisker even it is a bit larger than I need. In Norway, when you buy an insurance, you also can puhrchase an extra insurance for battery and drive units that you can renew for up to 10 years. It cost about 200 NOK/$20/month. That would cover the worst scenario and if available where you live I would go for that.
I was at The Grove in LA last night and the Fisker showroom was open and staffed. The shopping center was packed but not a single soul was in there other than the two sales people.
Fisker going under is not that crazy. It’s already happened to them TWICE before. Lordstown motors went bankrupt right before the launch of their truck (went bankrupt twice). Small automotive manufacturers go under all the time.
Magna Styer agreed on terms that would ultimately have them deliver cars that were not completed and lacked essential, advertised features. Fisker drove this collaboration into the ground... I wonder if Magna Styer was compensated for their hirings and setting up of production facilities...
I saw one in Glasgow, Scotland. Because I had not seen one before I had to ride my naturally aspirated bicycle round the back of it to see what it was. This was in the car park at a Sainsbury's supermarket. Note that my bicycle gets to park right next to the door, in the dry, with that spot never taken, and no need to walk more than five paces into the store. The Fisker Ocean was some way from the front door and, due to its bulk, that parking and getting in and out of the car park would really stress me out. I don't see why anyone would want to do that to themselves unless they were an elderly boomer with mobility issues. The humble bicycle for the win.
As a Scot who used to cycle as my main form of transport, I concur - if you live in Scotland. But when I moved to California that became completely impractical (too hot most of the year; distances too far; people looking at you like you’re insane; having to cross 4 lanes of traffic on a 55mph speed limit every time you need to turn left; having to take longer routes than cars because you can’t use the freeways). But I go back to the humble bicycle whenever I visit Scotland - cycling faster than the traffic never gets old!

Apple has massive cash reserves and several days ago they announced a $110 billion share buyback. Imagine if Apple used some of that cash to buy Fiskar or just loaned them a billion and helped Fiskar make the Ocean's software more reliable and easier to use. Think of a Fiskar x Apple collaboration, with Apple focused on the software and UI.
I think your review was very good and focused on the actual driving and physical aspects of the car while most of the others just focused on the Tech and the software shortfalls. If Fisker folds then they would need to be at a price that anyone buying one could just drive it until it was scrap value and break even. As an example here in Australia when HOLDEN/GM bailed they guaranteed spare parts for 10 years however they are ripping us off on parts. I priced a ground cable for a HOLDEN Cruze (Same a Chevy Cruze) and HOLDEN wanted $160 for it, I bought genuine one from the USA for $50 inc shipping. So if Fisker goes belly up they will be a nightmare going forward.
I may be way misinformed here but I've read several articles on Fiskar producing the karma again after it was bought the first time. I know they haven't been produced in a while but the original company started in like 2012 and they were still being produced in 2016 after the company had gone under and been rebought. This is the second time the company has gone under and the 3rd time mopar/Chrysler/Stellantis has passed on buying

They are still being produced today! Another company bought the rights and all the manufacturing tooling from Fisker in 2012 and since then it has been produced as the Karma Revero. This is also the reason the original 2500 Fisker Karma’s still have reasonable service support.
The Karma was a very popular car in Amsterdam. I watched them a lot when I was driving my 1968 280SE Mercedes Coupe tru town. Still a stunning designed car. Hope Fisker is going to make it!
I really REALLY wanted to buy an Ocean. So many things I see going wrong. I saw one with a cracked solar sky due to winter and a piece of weather strip that caused it. I saw another with a damaged piece surrounding the solar sky potentially due to when the Ocean is on a decline or include the solar panel does not close well, potentially buckling the surrounding piece. When a 12v needs to be replaced you need a Fisker tech to recalibrate the back most doggie windows and all 12v will need to be replaced at some point with potentially no tech available. Multiple cars immobilized due to OTA updates that failed mid install draining the 12v and needing a tech to fix. One of which the tech is baffled and can't get it going. Brake failure on one where the owner offered me $25k with many many issues and he just wants out. Back cockpit lights that do not go on, Keyfob issues. Door handle with one owner in Arizona where the plastic white insert deteriorated. Minor accidents with no parts that total the Ocean. Alarms that go off and can't be stopped. Power loss on some earlier cars. Brakes that slam on which caused several injuries. AC/heat vents failing. And those are things off the top of my head, if I think more I could probably remember more. And with parts being an issue tech can't even ifx the Oceans with issues even if they could get to you. AND a lack of response on phone lines. I tried to call, out of curiosity. I was on hold for 56 minutes and got cut off. There is NO WAY I am buying an Ocean, absolutely NO WAY!!!!! I didn't even mention that very near bankruptcy and the complete and total lack of communication with customers beyond service, just in general to give potential buyers some insight. NOTHING.
If all the manufacturer's would agree on some standardized sizes for the battery modules, it would set a floor for what these cars are worth when this type of scenario comes up. It would help stabilize prices in general while future proofing as well.
Pronouncing their name IS a fart sound. The nearly whisper/silent type. Hope he won't give the keys to Leenda when she's busy "twirling" out her selfies.
Sorry Rich, but I can adjust fan speed in both our Teslas right on the steering wheel with the scroll wheel button. In the X I just move the scroll wheel, in the 3, I press it for 2 sec and then scroll it as I keep it as the primary option. Rotating screen is unnecessary and a potential break nightmare. Screen should be landscape anyway which is why all Teslas are that way now. For watching video and having display closer to your view. Gauge display is not necessary at all. Plus steering wheel obscures display anyway in most cases. Heard 70 year old picking up his new model 3 say "this is the first time ever in my life I was able to adjust steering wheel to where I wanted because it would not block part of the gauge cluster" (because the model 3 just has the one center display) Prefer display on our model 3 versus 2 displays on the X.
No company will buy Fisker and sell the Ocean for less than $60k. Even at $60k they were losing money on each vehicle… which is why it’s going bankrupt. Nobody in their right mind should buy that car at $60k. There are way better vehicles out there for that amount of money - Mach E, model Y… even the Nissan whatever it’s called is better
How can't they be profitable at 60k a car? They screwed up massively somewhere to lose money at that price point cause I don't see the value even at 50 brand new.
@@AceEverett Rivian can't even make money selling at $90k. Rivian's unit cost is something like $132k. So not a surprise Fisker is losing money at 2/3 that. Building EVs is the best way to burn investor cash right now.
You're speaking of a liquidator that comes in after bankruptcy. Yes, liquidators will try to sell at MSRP because they don't have to keep a company afloat and don't have to honor any sales. The firesales goign on now are Fisker giving out the deals while it is still operating.
I own a few AMGs non-EV with the wide digital displays across the dash and I think this car has features that makes sense. Love the options for mechanical buttons and stock controls mixed with the large rotatable middle control. First attempt is always going to have manufacturer's issues. I would buy two if $15k and tuck away with trickle charge to keep battery healthy. This would be for those rough days ahead when people are really fighting over fuel. Cheers!
Good thing for Electrified Garage 😅 Fisker ocean is like a pretty girl you date looks good on the outside and then starts giving you a bunch of warning lights, unwelcome sounds and there is nobody to service it.
My main problem with buying a car from a company going out of business is where do I get spare parts? And what do I do with half finished software that is locked down and not open source so I can't tinker with it myself.
I like the perspectives of this videos. Car buying is so personal. A good friend who sold cars at a lot said, "You are your car". You aren't, but I know what he was saying❤ I drove a Yugo. I thought about what he had said !
Anyone with an old Windows computer has probably had it go tits up because one line of code supposedly gets wonky. Makes no sense to me but the computer just becomes worthless. I can't imagine a cars software won't end up doing the same thing and without a dealership handy you will be stuck with an expensive brick.

There’s tons of fisher oceans for sale and some with just 500-600 miles on them for between $32-35k. An ev stores better than a gas car because you don’t have fluids to make it rust and crackle. You just put it on a battery tender. Not sure how long you can tend a battery though and have it last.

If a company goes bankrupt, they should be required to open source the repair/diagnostic software as part of the bankruptcy proceedings.
They should be open-source in first place.
@@blackmennewstyleall these car companies trying to be tech companies and they should have the right to repair. Govt needs to make a law. The EU is doing it
When a company goes bankrupt, there no longer is a company to open source anything. Companies should be required to escrow the documentation so that in case of bankruptcy users still have access to it. Or heck, make it available anyway, because it's literally your paying customers who need it to fix their piece of trash you sold.
agree. That's what's holding me back from pulling the trigger on a discounted fisker.
any product or part that is no longer maintained or produced or sold by original manufacturer should be released as open source.

A viper is a death trap
It's litterally the opposite of a Viper. a quiet comfartable commuter car. over 5 years, you will have paid 20.000$ in gas in a Viper. and only 2000$ in electricity in The Fisker. Potato tomato...
That's such a huge flex man, it's a shame you can't buy both
I'm feeling kinda sad for Fisker. They had some really interesting models in the works & I really like the smaller SUV formfactor of the Fisker Ocean.
Hope they make it out alive & do better in the future.
The remants of Saab has a pretty nice looking EV with a claimed 600 mile range from a massive battery. Unfortunately, they are out of time and money.
@@quademasters249 Mezon Kuzk fudged up his own legacy. Instead of keeping quiet and silent, he opened his mouth. That made everything he "owns" suffer. Including Tesla. And i say a pear and not a sh!t, because sometimes (like a broken clock) he shuts the frak up and lets his managers do the bizz talk in his place. NOT these recent times, what with recently axing a good percentage of his Tesla leadership including one of his former right hand men at Tesla, who'd been around from nearly, day one.
The fans think that this will last forever and that he's some kind of bizz wizz, but the reality, cord hard reality, is this: while he's fumbling to unzip his fly over his photoshopped manbelly, the other car manufacturers are not only catching up on the lead, but they're leaving tesla in the dirt. In another 4~6 years, it won't make sense to buy those cars if he's around, especially since once you drink the koolaid, there's no going back. And he had a bath in the stuff, gargled it and made those tiny fountains you do at the pool when you're a kid and the water hits you back in the face - with it.
Like i said, had the guy shut up, let the Tesla management team do their jobs... Tesla would've had HUGEMONGOUS lead that no manufacturer could've even so much as approached. NOW.. not only is he losing that lead, but he's bleeding talent left and right, TO his enemies. He's not the first to capsize and the biggest fall the worst. My biggest concern would be parts availability 5-10 years from now. If they were maybe $5,000, someone could buy 2 or 3 and cannibalize parts off the others. I don’t see the prices coming down that far anytime soon, maybe ever.

an instrument cluster in front of you is for safety. you aren't taking your eyes off the road too much to look at it for useful information, like your speed to make sure you aren't speeding and in big digits that are displayed at all times.

Where/how are you going to buy replacement parts for a car like this?
You are not.
I think your review was very good and focused on the actual driving and physical aspects of the car while most of the others just focused
on the Tech and the software shortfalls. If Fisker folds then they would need to be at a price that anyone buying one could just drive it until
it was scrap value and break even. As an example here in Australia when HOLDEN/GM bailed they guaranteed spare parts for 10 years however
they are ripping us off on parts.

NOTHING.

Good thing for Electrified Garage 😅 Fisker ocean is like a pretty girl you date looks good on the outside and then starts giving you a bunch of warning lights, unwelcome sounds and there is nobody to service it.
I also want to know why I shouldn’t buy a car from a almost bankrupt company
Once it’s BK then no updates and nowhere to repair it and no parts if you need a part.. you will own a BRICK
Yup totally correct. Why take that chance.
@@javierferrer8898Maybe if you own an Electrified Garage? 😉
Were you seriously asking that question?
If you are what school did you go to ? 😂
You can press 1 button In a tesla to turn off heat, you lower the temp by pressing it on the screen once.
Did you pronounce the S in Illinois? I had higher hopes for you, Rich.
noice
You mean higher expectations?
You need to install latest software version to stop the roll back - shame about Fisker, it is a great car
4:05 I didn't know there were two Illinois's
(Rich loves saying such names wrong - but then there are other US places with indian or French names that are said wrong - the right way...)
I thought it was a kind of noise, like when you’re ill. But what do I know? I’m from Dess Moynes
But what about the physical buttons for the HVAC, do you like them?
Good luck finding insurance on it. Any accident is a total loss.
My main problem with buying a car from a company going out of business is where do I get spare parts? And what do I do with half finished software that is locked down and not open source so I can't tinker with it myself.
My favorite part of the car is the software being less responsive than a $50 android phone
I like the perspectives of this videos. Car buying is so personal. A good friend who sold cars at a lot said, "You are your car". You aren't, but I know what he was saying❤ I drove a Yugo. I thought about what he had said !
The Karma isn't as software dependent as the Ocean. The biggest issue will be on software updates and that can end the functionality of the car,
Never thought about that
Anyone with an old Windows computer has probably had it go tits up because one line of code supposedly gets wonky. Makes no sense to me but the computer just becomes worthless. I can't imagine a cars software won't end up doing the same thing and without a dealership handy you will be stuck with an expensive brick.
Once again another great video, Rich if you interact with a few of your subscribers, the question or comments your feel worthy of your time, that would take your channel to a whole new level....the video are still gold btw, imagine getting a chance to talk to rich.
13:14 Pretty bold of you going across that bridge with the windows up lol. That bridge was a “temporary” bridge built 30 years ago.
Wasn't it 40 yrs ago?
I definitely find it the best looking EV in that segment.
Where is Steven???
He’s wearing an ankle monitor for a wreck he caused or something like that.
I just had a quick browse on AutoTrader UK (coz that's where I am) and for a 2024 model 73kwh with delivery miles - £23,859 😲 Bargain ! You want the 4WD 113Kwh model - £29,499 😲 I think that is an absolute steal for the specs alone, I wouldn't get one personally because in the UK it's group 50D insurance as far as I know (maybe that's changed due to the company's financial position) and my current Nissan LEAF is group 21 (My 3rd LEAF since 2015 😁), but apart from that, I love the look of the cars design, there are some niggles in the software & build - and I would take Influencers (like Marcus) with a large dose of salt & do my own research and look at the car personally myself 👍 thanks for the quick unbased review 😁
WHISTLIN DIESEL needs to buy one and see how well it holds up. Lol
It’s been a while rich but this felt like an old school classic rich rebuilds! Missed this content!
The Fisker Ocean is the Palm Pre of EVs.
Palm Pre was ahead of its time.
Don't insult the Palm Pre like that.
There’s tons of fisher oceans for sale and some with just 500-600 miles on them for between $32-35k. An ev stores better than a gas car because you don’t have fluids to make it rust and crackle. You just put it on a battery tender. Not sure how long you can tend a battery though and have it last.
You’re spot on, except for the brake fluid, the coolant, the Freon, and the reduction gear oil…….
@@alexandergunaka666 all of those things you mentioned technically don't need to be changed. brake fluid whether black or water content, will still work, coolant doesnt go bad, freon? it doesnt just magically escape into the atmosphere, its a closed loop. gear reduction oil? what r u even talking about
@@MrPaxio Reduction gear? It moves the vehicle. It’s a gearbox with oil on all EV’s. All wheel drive vehicles will have two and Tesla’s actually have oil filters. All owners manuals I’ve seen do have fluid exchange intervals. Go pick one and take a look. You’ve never heard of an ac being recharged? I love when people come back at me like I don’t know what I’m saying when they could just google it.
@@MrPaxio Hello? Did you go into a shock for realizing the no sense making dude in the comments isn’t lying or are you just embarrassed. I’m just trying to get an opinion from someone who obviously doesn’t know about EV’s maintenance and thought he did. By the way I guess I missed some more misinformation. Your take on brake fluid is 100% wrong and I don’t understand how you can think otherwise. Coolant doesn’t go bad. Coolant when it gets old looses its propylene glycol which will lead to overheating of what it cools such as the battery and will make you loose heat in your hvac. Also coolant gets acidic when it’s old…. Waiting
I’ve seen a few on the road in NYC it looks good if they company wasn’t dying I would actually consider it
Great job Rich. I agree with your review when Fisker drops the price on the Ocean lower. And thanks for letting us know about the warranty.
"96% of Ev owners have a gas car for backup" 💯 uncle Rich, that is so true 🙋At $20k-30k that Fisker would be a steal and even if you can't get it serviced or sell it, you can always turn it into a energy storage battery.
