Thank you so much! As long as the battery isn't plugged in while youre modding it and not being pushed down hard by the foam you should be fine. I just left the foam that was already stock on top of it. Also, good luck in your modding endeavors! 😁
In my other video, I also tape moded it to see how it would affect it, although i still left the foam in. I think the keyboard actually sounds better now than when I made the video since it broke in a little. I believe the ticking is gone, but I could be wrong. You probably have a better ear than me 😂
I was planning on basically doing the same thing as you just trying to decide what switch to go for NK creams or Lavenders? and I prefer a more thocky sound profile
Yeah I watched many videos for switches and liked the deeper sound of the lavender switches. It also depends heavily on the keycaps and sometimes even your desk. Good luck on your project!
@@nathantaylor6850 Thanks a lot I will def go for the Lavenders. I watched many vids of NK creams and Lavender sound test and I liked Lavenders thock more. Thank you for helping me with my decision also keep up the amazing vids;)
I definitely could do it faster now that I know what I'm doing since in the video I was trying not to over lube them, but I could've used more. I was thinking about spray lube but I had time so I thought I might as well use regular lube. Spray lube is definitely better than nothing though.
@@Jules23323 It somewhat depends on what lube you use and how careful you apply it, but yes for the most part it's not a very good idea which is why I didn't do it. Plus it just sounds better anyways with brush on lube. 😄
Just shows you can make anything sound good these days haha where did you buy those foam strips so I can buy me some? I'll tell you about a trick I know also with silicone bandaids lol well it's really like a silicone wrap for burns and you can use it like you did these strips haha
I got them from Lowes, the link is in the description. They're definitely not for this, but I like them since they add weight to the keyboard and a little sound dampening, plus they expand into the case so there are no gaps. There are probably some better and more cost effective options though. 😄
@@nathantaylor6850 agreed mate I have an RK84 myself, really happy with it as its my first mechanical keyboard :) so far ive done the foam mod and im looking to bandaid mod the stabs next because they are a bit rattle-y

Could you please describe your experience with the lavender linear switches? Would you recommend them? EDIT: confused tactile with linear switches for a second there
It has broken in a little and I realize now I didn't put enough lube in the switches to achieve what I was going for I think, but it is still insanely smooth and sounds really nice. I definitely don't regret making this keyboard, but if I were to do it again I would put just a little bit more lube. It's not a big enough thing to warrant re-lubing however. Overall, I'm thrilled with the build. Thank you for the comment!
I'll be modding another rk68, but I think the process for modding the rkg68 would basically be the same minus maybe a few internal components. I think you'd be ok following this video to mod one if you were planning on doing that. Good luck!
Yeah, that might be why. I would check your order history to see if you ordered the right one, and if it's different you should see if you can return it. It is odd that it didn't even come with a wire since even the wireless one does.
@@nathantaylor6850 what i meant by it didnt come with a wire is that there was no wire connected to the pcb cause there was no battery. still got the USB-C to USB-A wire tho.
It'd be pretty hard to ruin a keyboard like this. As long as you find videos of the mods you want to do you should be fine. Like I said in the video, this was my first time even touching a mechanical keyboard, so I'm sure you'll be fine. If you have any questions or anything you can comment here and I'll try my best to explain anything you need. Also, you don't have to spend as much money as I did. You can easily get away with cheaper parts and it would still sound great. I say just give it a shot, there's always a way to fix something if you do end up breaking it, but I don't think you will. 👍
@@BlGsmonk Luckily I'm fairly handy, so modding it wasn't too hard, plus I have a lot of experience with my camera and editing software so I could make a pretty high quality video. Also, I have no idea how it got this many views 😅I think keyboard videos are just popular right now.
For good reason, easy to mod, great software and features, and decent hardware out of the box. It does seem to be very popular and easy to find videos over as well.
@@nathantaylor6850 yeah. it is so easy to mod tbh. i upgrade G68 to TM680 and it is harder to mod tm680 because my case is transparent and i dont wanna use foam mod (make the case uglier) or tape mod (hollow). :sadge:
I hope you'll be able to get it sooner because it is an amazing typing experience compared to standard keyboards, and obviously it's especially special when you get to mod it yourself. Also there are always work arounds and cheaper ways to do mods if that's the issue. I could recommend some different materials and things if you ever need it. 👍
Yeah I knew it was going to happen since the stand-off for the pcb was so short at the bottom, but I wanted to try. They keys just kept popping off because it was bent so much. 😄
If anything the biggest mod for the stabs was lubing since it vastly reduces the rattle of the wire. The band aid mod definitely reduces rattle in the fit, but not in the wire and nearly as much as lubing, however if thats all you can do for now it is better than nothing. Also, if you want to clip the stabs I would watch some tutorials first since I didn't show it very well in this video. Good luck! 👍
That's a good question! In general the blue keys are the bigger keys on this keyboard. In the video I only press the big blue keys and none of the little ones, but the small blue keys actually sound the same as the white ones. Also, the more centered the key is on the keyboard the more hollow they sound usually. The expanding foam helps tremendously with this, but the subtle hollowness could also be contributing to a more clacky sound. Basically though, the bigger the key the more thocky which is why the spacebar sounds so good. Thanks for the question!
don't know if you're still answering questions, but what's your opinion on using painter's tape or medical tape for the mods that require bandaids? Would they sound the same?
I don't think the mod effects sound much other than stab rattle. It's basically just a shim to make the fit of the clip on stab more tight so it doesn't rattle in its mount. I think either should work fine. You could pretty much use anything to do it. Hope this helps!
If you have the keyboard right now you can look at the stand-offs for the PCB and see these ridges that stick out to hold the PCB up. That's the max height the foam can be at each of the stand-offs. Near the top of the keyboard probably around 1.5 cm and it tapers down to a few millimeters near the bottom. If the foam you use can be compressed pretty easily then I would get 1 to 1.5 cm; however, if the foam cant be compressed without a bit of force then get 1 cm and shave off foam as you go down the keyboard. I got expanding foam so I wouldn't have to worry so much about the thickness except for the bottom where I had to tear some foam out. Good Luck!
It's soooo much easier than one might think. It's just like doing crafts as a kid. And if you don't like how something is turning out then it's really easy to undo. If you have a different keyboard I would watch videos on moding it just so you understand what you're going in to, but I say just go for it and take your time. Good luck! 😊
Hi great vid! But i have a question, does thock makes the key hard to push like you need to push it down to activate the key? Sorry for my bad question and bad grammar:(
It's definitely really difficult to find keycaps that fit on a 65% keyboard. I spent days trying to find ones that I liked. In fact the first set I got didn't fit, so the keycaps in this video were the second set that I bought. I would just try to look everywhere for a set you like. Look up 68 key blue and pink keycap set on google and go to the shopping tab. Usually you can find a set you like, but from my experience the only good sets with the colors I wanted for a 68 key set were pretty expensive I just happened to get lucky. Don't just look on Amazon or anything, you really have to look around for them. I'll be on the lookout for some blue and pink keycaps for you. Hope this helps!
@@nathantaylor6850 I didnt take out the switches yet because I was afraid it would break. If it can be pulled out without desoldering it, is it okay if I force it to even if it is really hard like its breaking?
@@kyleacosta7021 If your keyboard is hotswappable it should be ok. Also if it came with extra switches in the box I think it would be ok to try to pull one out even if you end up breaking it. Obviously if its a soldered board don't try to pull them off.
Probably not this exact version. You might be able to find something similar, but I am sure you can find someone to make a custom one for you online where you can tell them exactly what you want. Another option is to try to find someone that sells lubed switches and that would take a lot of the work out of building this particular keyboard since every other mod was fairly easy and didn't take much time. Good luck!
The case is what resonates the sound (similar to an instrument like a guitar or something), so I would change the case in some way by either putting foam in it or using the tape mod. Keycaps I think come second to this and changing them from ABS to PBT makes the biggest difference, or just getting higher quality PBT. It really depends, but those two things are very important in terms of the sound signature... oh and definitely lubing. 😁
I wonder how much is due to the internal mods and how much is due to the different keycaps. Could we get a video of the same kb after mods with the original keycaps?
It would be a while for me to make a video like that because I'm in college right now, but I think the internal mods really only changed the amount of hollowness and rattle and the keycaps really just made the sound deeper as well as the switches.
In my experience, the lubed switches always made the most difference in sound, followed by the tempest tape mod. For stabilizers, the holee mod plus a bit of plate band-aid is pretty effective for loose and rattly ones.
I'm a newbie also and just ordered RK68, all the custom kit, and Akko matcha switch awaiting my first mod, this video is the perfect guide for me.

The spacebar 😳
😏
I subscribe and you keep making vids this was pretty good
Thank you very much!
woah... so good for first keeb! (but next time, try working more on the pcb, like putting foam and tape mod) :D
Yeah, for sure! It was certainly a learning experience 😂
@@nathantaylor6850 :D
This video is so soothing to watch 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 my RK 68 is coming in the mail today :) I can’t wait to mod it! Is it safe to leave the battery in there with the foam? I can’t remember where I heard it but I heard that you shouldn’t do that 😱
Thank you so much! As long as the battery isn't plugged in while youre modding it and not being pushed down hard by the foam you should be fine. I just left the foam that was already stock on top of it. Also, good luck in your modding endeavors! 😁
I think that it would be nicer if you tape modded it. also, the enter key and left shift have just the slightest bit of ticking.
@@rory4539 No problem, and thanks!
8:26 is exactly why I use spray lube. It might not be the most reliable, but it's better than nothing.
I definitely could do it faster now that I know what I'm doing since in the video I was trying not to over lube them, but I could've used more. I was thinking about spray lube but I had time so I thought I might as well use regular lube. Spray lube is definitely better than nothing though.
@@nathantaylor6850 spray lube brakes you board tho
good build bro😁
Thanks! 😁
Royal Kludge lets gooooo
It's a really great base for customization for pretty cheap. I couldn't pass it up. 😄
@@nathantaylor6850 agreed mate I have an RK84 myself, really happy with it as its my first mechanical keyboard :) so far ive done the foam mod and im looking to bandaid mod the stabs next because they are a bit rattle-y
this puts hippyos magic to shame
Thanks! To be fair I was partially inspired from him and other videos. 😄
Great video Nathan, I typically don't like asmr videos but for hearing thoccs, asmr's are great.
How has your experience been with your modded RK68 after 3 weeks?
Could you please describe your experience with the lavender linear switches? Would you recommend them?
EDIT: confused tactile with linear switches for a second there
It has broken in a little and I realize now I didn't put enough lube in the switches to achieve what I was going for I think, but it is still insanely smooth and sounds really nice. I definitely don't regret making this keyboard, but if I were to do it again I would put just a little bit more lube. It's not a big enough thing to warrant re-lubing however. Overall, I'm thrilled with the build. Thank you for the comment!
what!!?? i was saving up money for that same keyboard and those same keycaps, what a coincidence
Nice! 😄
will be modding my rkg68 this month. i'm scared
I'll be modding another rk68, but I think the process for modding the rkg68 would basically be the same minus maybe a few internal components. I think you'd be ok following this video to mod one if you were planning on doing that. Good luck!
That's actually a decent sound from your first mod, and btw do you still notice any scratches after modding the stock stabs?
Thank you so much! Now that the keyboards been broken in for a while, I haven't notice any scratching yet. Still sounds great 👍
my RK68 didnt come with a battery or wire. i tink i dont have wireless tho so i think thats why.
@@Kenzie1051 Ok I gotcha, that's good. At least you can still do mods to it 😉
@@nathantaylor6850 yeah in fact its easier than normal cause i put foam and it and no connecting wire because no battery so yeah.
@@Kenzie1051 That's true, maybe a nicer sound even.
I really wanna mod my keyboard but im scared I’ll ruin it and wont be able to use it anymore
I saw a review on the RK68 saying that the leds protrude which cause the switches to be a little loose relative to the stock kailh switches
Personally I didn't have any issues with this problem. I think as long as the switch you use is standard it should be fine.
@@nathantaylor6850 I ended up getting my own rk68 and my banana splits didn't fit in properly so I'm returning the board
@@arishuang Gotcha, so maybe I just got lucky with the switches I picked. 🤷♂️
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS YOUR FIRST MOD!??
Wait this is also your first video how do you have 35k views
@@BlGsmonk Luckily I'm fairly handy, so modding it wasn't too hard, plus I have a lot of experience with my camera and editing software so I could make a pretty high quality video. Also, I have no idea how it got this many views 😅I think keyboard videos are just popular right now.
keyboard modding be like:
Before mod: spacebar most loudest frustrating key.
After mod: spacebar most silent relaxing key.
It's definitely the most rewarding part 😂. In fact, I waited to even press the spacebar until I was completely done.
it seems that in 2021 RK G68 is the best keyboard for newbie
For good reason, easy to mod, great software and features, and decent hardware out of the box. It does seem to be very popular and easy to find videos over as well.
@@nathantaylor6850 yeah. it is so easy to mod tbh.
i upgrade G68 to TM680 and it is harder to mod tm680 because my case is transparent and i dont wanna use foam mod (make the case uglier) or tape mod (hollow).
:sadge:
i hope i can get my keyboard next year
I hope you'll be able to get it sooner because it is an amazing typing experience compared to standard keyboards, and obviously it's especially special when you get to mod it yourself. Also there are always work arounds and cheaper ways to do mods if that's the issue. I could recommend some different materials and things if you ever need it. 👍

Nice build but you had to have taken breaks in those 11 hours of lubing , it took me 3 and I still needed breaks lol
Oh yeah for sure, I got some tools for my other video so it took way less time. Plus I had the experience. Music also helps 😄
The only mod you missed i think is the holee mod but good first try
Thanks! To be honest I didn't even know about the holee mod when I made this.😄
had the same problem with the bottom part having issues with the foam. hahaha
Yeah I knew it was going to happen since the stand-off for the pcb was so short at the bottom, but I wanted to try. They keys just kept popping off because it was bent so much. 😄
rk68 is my dream keyboard (for now) HAHAHA but hey props to you man! It sounds really good for your first build :) Keep it up! :D
@@danielcaunin2106 Thanks! 😊
would it make a diff if i just apply the band aid mod? maybe clip the stabilizers as well without lubing anything?
If anything the biggest mod for the stabs was lubing since it vastly reduces the rattle of the wire. The band aid mod definitely reduces rattle in the fit, but not in the wire and nearly as much as lubing, however if thats all you can do for now it is better than nothing. Also, if you want to clip the stabs I would watch some tutorials first since I didn't show it very well in this video. Good luck! 👍

Why does the blue keys sound thocky while the white keys sound clacky?
That's a good question! In general the blue keys are the bigger keys on this keyboard. In the video I only press the big blue keys and none of the little ones, but the small blue keys actually sound the same as the white ones. Also, the more centered the key is on the keyboard the more hollow they sound usually. The expanding foam helps tremendously with this, but the subtle hollowness could also be contributing to a more clacky sound. Basically though, the bigger the key the more thocky which is why the spacebar sounds so good. Thanks for the question!
Wow
I resisted typing on it until I was completely done and that was my reaction as well.
don't know if you're still answering questions, but what's your opinion on using painter's tape or medical tape for the mods that require bandaids? Would they sound the same?
I don't think the mod effects sound much other than stab rattle. It's basically just a shim to make the fit of the clip on stab more tight so it doesn't rattle in its mount. I think either should work fine. You could pretty much use anything to do it. Hope this helps!
How thick should the foam be, if you want to foam mod the rk68? Thanks in advance!
Good Luck!
@@nathantaylor6850 Thanks for the in-depth answer, now i’ll be able to mod it :)

why does my rk61 and some rk61 have pre lubed stabs already? not complaining tho just wondering
They all come with pre-lubed switches and stabs. It's definitely not the best lube job ever, but it's better than nothing. 😄
I want to try this out but I’m also worried about possibly damaging my keyboard 😕
It's soooo much easier than one might think. It's just like doing crafts as a kid. And if you don't like how something is turning out then it's really easy to undo. If you have a different keyboard I would watch videos on moding it just so you understand what you're going in to, but I say just go for it and take your time. Good luck! 😊
one thing you shouldnt do in this video is.. use metal tools on a keyboard evenm if its off when the battery is still connected
True, I didn't really think about that. 😅
good job!
Why thank you!
and here I thought 30 mins of lubing for the first time 74 switches was very slow
😂 idk, sounds slow to me
Just wondering what camera did you use and what did you use hold it up? Also Really Clean build
Thanks! I used a Canon 80D with a manual Rokinon 35mm F1.4 lens.
To cut the stabilizers, is it just opposite legs from each other ? (Left on one side, left on the other ?)
I think it was the diagonal two that had a lip. I would look at another tutorial to be sure though 👍
Try doing gummy o-ring mount on this board
I might end up doing dome more mods down the road, so I'll keep this one in mind. Thanks!
Stock stabs?
Yep! The only problem with them is that on some of the keys they are a little gunky to push down on, but nothing that bothers me too much personally.
Hi great vid! But i have a question, does thock makes the key hard to push like you need to push it down to activate the key? Sorry for my bad question and bad grammar:(
No, actually the opposite. Lubing the switches makes it easier to push down. Also, there's never a bad question 👍
seeing you have found keycaps for the rk68, do you know where i can get some blue and pink ones for my rk68?

@@nathantaylor6850 thank you!
@@mczstudio Of course!
Loved what you did here omg
As someone looking to get into the hobby, what would you say made the most difference in changing the sound?
The case is what resonates the sound (similar to an instrument like a guitar or something), so I would change the case in some way by either putting foam in it or using the tape mod. Keycaps I think come second to this and changing them from ABS to PBT makes the biggest difference, or just getting higher quality PBT. It really depends, but those two things are very important in terms of the sound signature... oh and definitely lubing. 😁
how are the lavender switches do they have any ping sounds
If you lube the springs on any switch it should eliminate the pingy sound, but the lavender didn't have any that I noticed before I lubed them.
@@kuyt20 Yeah lubing everything makes such a difference, especially on cheaper switches.
is it stocked stabilizer?
Yep 👍
