@@JarrodsTech You should not have recommended it in a pinch because most people that watch this won't use common sense. Of course, I wouldn't do this with an aftermarket charger. Only with an OEM (Most of them stop charging if they overheat). Not that they normally do on a consistent basis. Unless they are covered. Even then as long as it's not for long periods you should be fine. You just got to use common sense like gaming on a bed blocking ventilation fans. Point is it's better than nothing. I'm convinced an old game fried my old laptop because I found it rendering over 2,000 FPS & getting extremely hot... when all it needed was like 5% of that
good one i keep it as highest as 144hz which is what my display refresh rate is, and i limit it even further down to 35 fps when playing heavy AAA games
Tip#8 : be careful about Tip#5. Make sure to backup your laptop frequently (make daily SSD images) especially prior to clicking the UPDATE NOW button. You may find yourself more unhappy than happy after the update ...
Bonus tip, avoid using less viscous paste like MX-4, Kryonaut, KPx, etc on a laptop as they're more prone to pumping-out effect. They're best used for desktop CPU that has an IHS. Honeywell PTM 7950 is currently the best choice for direct die cooling (laptop and discrete GPU) and you don't have to worry about it pumped out of the chip. But if you really want a thermal paste, then you should get those thicker one like MX-6, TF-9, TFX, CryoFuze, etc. Thicker paste are less prone to pump outs.
And most importantly NEVER overuse K5 Pro for the VRMs and GDDR Memory NANDs. Because that will cause a short if the overflowing K5 Pro has touched sensitive components and grounding area.
I'm actually looking to repaste my laptop soon. Looked up online and people mentioned regular paste will dry out pretty quick and also the pump out issue, so it's a no go for me since I don't want to do it regularly. People recommended the 7950, but I'm not sure where to find genuine ones (heard there are fakes out there). There's also kryosheet as well but that thing is expensive as hell. Two sheets for cpu+gpu is gonna run me like $25, which is twice the price of a tube of normal paste...
@@Summer-xu8qu the pricing of PTM7950 is around in the middle between kryosheet and premium paste. But the largest size (80x80mm) option is somewhat the same as kryosheet and carbonaut though. At least in my country, dunno about yours. If you often open up your laptop due to dust problems like me (I clean up my fans once every 6-8 months and I can't remove my laptop's fan without disassembling the whole cooling system), then I think you should prefer paste over PTM7950. Because it's kinda a waste to use PTM7950 in that circumstances, longevity is its strong point aside from good performance.
Tip7:Do not disassemble the back cover of your laptop to clean the dust before you are unsure and have not finished cleaning the static electricity. Make sure you read the disassembly process of this machine, clean up the static electricity, and disconnect the battery cables.
@@davidekilla8222 1. put the charger plug in 2. Remove your slippers 3. Stand on floor 4. Take a wet cloth and clean your motherboard 5. Congrats Static charge gone 💀
Jarrod, my G, you're a Godsend. I literally just ordered my Legion 5i Pro hours ago and was thinking what to do to ensure longevity. I have always been someone who couldn't be bothered to care for their stuff but this laptop means A LOT to me as this will be one of my most prized possessions. Just want to say, thank you for all you do and keep on providing us with this insane value.
I gotta disagree with placing the laptop brick underneath the air intake. The radiating heat from the power brick gets sucked into the intakes. I learned that the hard way when I did just that to my Legion 5. No damage, though, but I hit thermal throttling way earlier than leaving my laptop on a flat desk.
That’s surprising, no need to put it fully under the back, just enough to rest on the edge of the brick with the rubber foot of the laptop gripping it. Works great on the 2021 Legion 5, not sure much has changed…
Yep, you're absolutely right. I mean, if I paid $2.000+ for the laptop, I'm not gonna cheap out on 15-20$ for a decent cooling stand with fans. Even a stand that costs less than 10$ with not so good fans is better than doing the power adapter trick, in my opinion of course.
Be using my OMEN over 5 years now, playing it in all seasons even in heat, and have never cleaned it since bought it. I started to worry that it might die soon so now watching your videos for advice. Thank you
that is indeed a very dangerous tip, Gaming Laptop Chargers heat up quite a lot and need to be kept away from area where they can even cause burns. (like my Razer and Asus ones used to heat up soo bad I had to keep them beside cool walls to absorb the heat)
Secret tip for updates: look for how well the update is. Don't update anything in the software before you know well enough you won't lose features you love/rely on a lot, the update is stable and overall worth it.
I got this neat plastic cover for my laptop and it keeps stuff from going inside the keys. Highly recommended it. Only issue I have is it kinda weird to get use to but it helps a lot keeping your laptop does. :)
Honeywell PTM7950. That's all you need. And reducing the CPU clocks _without_ disabling Turbo Boost (from 4.5GHz to 3.5GHz, if the CPU base clock is 2.7GHz).
@@Reaversword3D PTM7950 has the best performance out of all TIMs like thermal pastes and carbon pads (all go on the CPUs and CPU/GPU dies, it doesn't replace the need for VRAM thermal pads or thermal putty). The only other TIM that's better is liquid metal - but the margin is only around 2-4C compared to ~10-15C on thermal pastes, and the difficulty of applying and maintaining liquid metal makes it almost impossible for laptop manufacturers or laptop users to apply it well without some catastrophic outcomes, which I experienced myself (I'm glad the laptop I serviced still works, I was extra cautious when removing factory liquid metal on an Asus ROG laptop which spilled away and breached the first line of defense and caused CPU stability problems due to shorting the SMD components on the AMD CPU). Thus it means that PTM7950 is 7-10C better than all newly applied thermal pastes. What is more, both thermal pastes and liquid metal all have limited service life of around 1-1.5 years on gaming laptops (yes, there's a reason why I had to service a laptop with liquid metal applied from factory). PTM7950 has a service life starting from 2 years but can be left unmaintained up until the laptop breaks after 10-15 years, with hardly any performance degradation. This is because PTM7950 (not PTM7950SP, which requires extra steps to apply properly) does not suffer from the pump-out effect, nor does it dry up like pastes, because it doesn't have silicon, which thermal pastes do. There's a tutorial on Major Geeks website about reducing the "maximum processor frequency" setting in Windows' Control Panel, which would let you fine-tune the CPu clocks downwards to improve efficiency and decrease the heat, without effectively halving your performance per core by turning off Turbo Boost and having your CPU only reaching the base clock speed, which is usually too low.
Basic but invaluable tips for the avesage gamer. Batteries on the larger and more powerful gaming laptips are really for supplementary/standby use pnly.
If you have the option to, keep your GPU off and your CPU in the lowest mode as often as possible. Only use the GPU and higher modes on your CPU when you need to.
Use doorstops to elevate back side of the laptop, they usually have a "dry glue" that will attach perfectly to your computer without damaging it if you remove it. Don't close the screen as you see in the movies/series, take 3 or 4 seconds to do it, and avoid color lines appear Don't close your laptop when you're done if you don't gonna travel or move from your home Let your battery load at 60% or so as maximum, with the option in your laptop software (if you use it usually plugged to the wall) Clean it.

I aggree. My Asus TUF A17 (2022) was in the first 1-1,5 year a freezing, ssd killer hot pc. After they replaced in warranty time the ssd, I sent it back 2 more times with instability issues. When I got it back last time, they could not do anithing, but in the background a new BIOS arrived. I updated it and all my problems dissapeared. So I suggest not to buy right after release, and they do optimizing still after release. So possibly stability is best from release +1 year. This is my experience.
I have a Lenovo Legion 5 with Plastic Body. It was in a padded laptop bag and in my thick military backpack with clothes arround it. I went by train 6 hours 2 times a week. I personally also have 1 SSD with the stock configuration on the side. In the past, when my pc would become unstable or worse I would get a problem with driver compatibility (black screen of death windows 7 for example) I would just swap the ssd, clone the SSD again on the problematic ssd. This was much faster than reinstalling windows and then trying to remember what driver was the one working with your 5 year old capture card, how did you get that windows 98 game to work or other things like that. Best part about this trick is that the OS ssd does not need to be large, so price wise it is a very small cost.

Contrary to what this video suggests, if you have your laptop working and performing as desired, don't update anything. Updates are more likely to cause problems and performance issues than fix anything.

Tips to make your laptop last for many years: 1. Always clean the screen with a microfiber cloth. Don't spray the screen cleaner directly onto the screen, instead, spray it on the cloth. Don't clean the screen or the laptop's body with your T-shirt or a rough cloth, that'll leave scratches. Always use a microfiber cloth for cleaning. Clean the laptop once a week, don't do it regularly. Don't use water to clean the laptop. 2. Clean the fans and change the thermal paste once in 6 months or once a year. Disconnect the battery before cleaning the fans, otherwise, you'll fry the motherboard. 3. Always put your laptop on a cooling pad. 4. Don't turn the laptop on and off many times a day. twice a day is ideal. 5. Even if your gpu is capable of getting 100fps, even gaming at 60fps will give you the best experience, this way, the gpu will be cooler. Always check the temp. Temp is more important than the framerate. 6. If your laptop is expensive and you bought it as a desktop replacement, don't ever take it out with you. You never know what happens. 7. If you own legion, always set the battery to be on conservation mode. This will extend the lifespan of the battery 8. Always handle it with care as if it's a baby. As Jarrod said, open the laptop from the middle and treat it well.
4. why? seems very random to say that twice a day is an ideal number of restarts a day. it really shouldnt affect the laptop 6. if i bought a laptop as a desktop replacement, im going to bring it with me lmao. if i didnt want to bring it anywhere id get a pre built desktop, its the whole point of a laptop

Because it's kinda a waste to use PTM7950 in that circumstances, longevity is its strong point aside from good performance.
Gelid GC extreme is an equally Viscous yet cheaper option, works great for my lappy.

Further to point 1, consider undervolting

Hi Jarrod, at 0:46 isn't it more dangerous to stick the charger to the laptop base which gives more heat and screws up them all?!?
the charger is at bigger risk than the laptop imo.
the edge of the charger he meant by showing that, dont keep the laptop on the charger but just wedge the charge just enough to prop laptop up
that is indeed a very dangerous tip, Gaming Laptop Chargers heat up quite a lot and need to be kept away from area where they can even cause burns.

Honeywell PTM7950. That's all you need. And reducing the CPU clocks _without_ disabling Turbo Boost (from 4.5GHz to 3.5GHz, if the CPU base clock is 2.7GHz).
How?
ye tell me too@@Reaversword3D
0:29 This can also build up more dust. Which is annoying to clean up especially in a laptop.
Don't close the screen as you see in the movies/series, take 3 or 4 seconds to do it, and avoid color lines appear
Don't close your laptop when you're done if you don't gonna travel or move from your home
Let your battery load at 60% or so as maximum, with the option in your laptop software (if you use it usually plugged to the wall)
Clean it.
In place of close the laptop, use a piece of fabric to cover it

An one day just randomly I got it out of my backpack and the screen looked like it was broken directly in the middle. Warranty didnt paid, Lenovo Customer Care absolutely bad. Costed me arround 300+€. There was absolutely no external damage to be seen. I learned that I will never buy a plastic laptop anymore if maybe a tiny bit of force can break it so easily.

With all this new content you've been making about new laptops, I was looking for a how to setup a new gaming laptop, with general tips and some specific manufacturer quirks. Like uninstall lenovo vantage and get lenovo toolkit is something I saw.
I always set conservation mode and any other battery protection modes on my LOQ 15 IAX9 in Lenovo Vantage.

Do what killed your laptop ?
Tips to make your laptop last for many years:
This will extend the lifespan of the battery
8. Always handle it with care as if it's a baby. As Jarrod said, open the laptop from the middle and treat it well.
4. why? seems very random to say that twice a day is an ideal number of restarts a day. it really shouldnt affect the laptop
