Jarrod has single handedly turned me into a laptop nerd. I didn’t even know what an RTX 4090 was until watching his videos a month ago. I also used to be an Xbox guy but am now a laptop gamer (Acer Predator Neo 16)
Did you at some point consider getting a Desktop PC instead of a Laptop? Since you used to play on Xbox, I am assuming you don't need the portability of a laptop.
I think that going from console to gaming laptop is a solid transition. You get to game on the pc environment, without the hassle of building your own stuff
@ yeah I think these massive PC rigs are a thing of the past. Why go through so much hassle when a laptop in 2024 is the same thing but smaller and more affordable
PSA on Advanced Optimus: to enable it, you must use "Automatic Select" option, and not "Optimus". "Optimus" is what it is, a regular Optimus, not Advanced one, signal still goes through iGPU first, before being sent to dGPU. I know it's not clear and Nvidia could make it more obvious, but it is what it is.
... in some TH-cam videos, you have to rise the playback-speed to 1.5 x or even to 2.0 x as the talking speed is soooo slow, you would fall asleep. Well, this is not the case 🙂🙂🙂 Jarrod is definitely NOT wasting anybody's time here, this is not a "before-going-to-bed" channel.
Regarding the colour calibration thingy. You can usually rent one from a local photography gear rental shop or have them calibrate it for you. That last one might get you laughed at by the old hats though.
I was in the market for a new laptop. I had a cheap laptop from 2020 and a desktop at home, but I travel between the US and Europe enough that I decided to get a high end laptop. I did a little research on the chassis I wanted, then the YT algorithm showed me a post promoting JT's website. I ended up getting a Lenovo Legion Pro 7 (Ryzen 9 7945HX | RTX 4090) for a great price since I found out that Lenovo really likes putting their Legion stuff on BIG discounts regardless of specs. So, it was only a matter of time before I got mine, and it's been fantastic. I look forward to the day when I can build a custom tower again, but this will do perfectly for now and hopefully the next 5-10 years. Thanks for the website, Jarrod.
Great video, but wanted to comment on Tip 45 8:45, don't use thermal paste on a laptop, especially electrically conductive ones, laptop circuits aren't as protected as desktop motherboards, AND NEVER USE LIQUID METAL UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING OR YOUR LAPTOP MANUFACTURER HAS LIQUID METAL SAFETY BORDERS INSTALLED on the cpu/gpu die. i had noctua nt h2 pasted on my rtx 3060 ryzen 7 5800H Omen 15(2021 version) the performance was good. not excellent but better than stock paste, but 3 months later it pumped out *thank god it wasn't electrically conductive otherwise my laptop would be a goner* but most pastes are like that. they weren't made for laptops but for Desktops with lower temp densities. even liquid metal isn't good for laptops as most laptop don't support it and might get fried if it spills and the effect of liquid metal lasts only 2 months before crumbling or cracking inside the laptop making you replace it in less than 60 days. also many have witnessed the case of cpu die corrossion due to liquid metal. conclusion Liquid metal is a big no no, doesn't last long, risk of frying your laptop, short time amazing performance. then do what i did, get the honeywell ptm 7950. the most amazing purchase i made was Honeywell PTM 7950. so much that i thought it was too good to exist. this has thermal performance toe to toe with liquid metal, yet due to it being a pad it lasts 1- 3 years. for someone like me who doesn't like getting into my laptop too much it's a bliss and the performance doesn't degrade whatsoever for 3 years at all instead it gets better as it goes through phase change cycles. i researched a bit more and found out lenovo legion uses their own version of honeywell ptm 7950 that's why they have such good temps for such a long time. sorry if i am ranting for a bit i just wanted people to know thermal paste and liquid metal isn't the way to go. not for laptops but Thermal pads like honeywell ptm 7950 are. the only problem is they are many fake ptm 7950 due to it's popularity, but you can get the real ones from linustechtip website or like i got mine from amazon i just went from salemtechspert's affliate link. which had the real ptm 7950 too. i hope Jarrod could pin this comment so more people would know about this :D Well if you are wondering the difference in performance i got i will say my cpu temps only Noctua nt h2: 102 C under full load in cinebench r23(5900 RPM fan speed max and thermal paste is 4 months old since applied, test before i removed it a year ago) Honeywell ptm 7950: 87 C under full load in cinebench r23 (5900 RPM fan speed max and the phase change thermal pad is a year old since applied)
On tip 23 (4:12), it is said to have Optimus turned On for better performance, but the graph shown says Optimus On gives you less frames per second. What am I missing?

8:20 only at 1440p or higher. If you go for 1080p, cpu is slighly more important, especially if you want to use upscaling too as on these small screens it still looks good. 9:23 overclock but also undervolt it. More performance, lower temps. Best from both worlds. Or if you really want lower temps just undervolt straight away and get like 5-10% less fps but 10c less temps
Tip # 51. Before buying a new laptop after 3-5 years because it can't play newer games as well or whatever, get a cloud gaming subscription that will give new life, years more to that nice display, if you listened to Jarrod's advice about getting one a good display. Also that eGPU clip is not a good example as the CPU was bottle necking something fierce
@@lostskull7467 It's actually a good point. Laptop CPUs are nowhere near their PC counterparts (the same goes for GPUs) and will almost always go to 100 °C and throttle because the laptop does not enjoy the level of cooling a PC does. Unless we take a top-tier laptop, the CPU could be the bottleneck for many cases.
Hey man, I've been a long time lurker and have enjoyed your content a lot and of course learned a lot as well. Last week I upgraded to an asus rog strix (4070) from daily checking your website, after 5 years of having an HP Pavilion gaming which is still kicking but can't keep up with games because of the 1650. And it just feels ominous to be able to play most if not all games on the highest settings with max resolution. Looking to get into undervolting since it does get quite hot when pumping those high FPS. Just want to thank you man.
Setting RGB to red is genuinely beneficial and not just a joke. Because red has the longest wavelength of all colours, it is the least straining on the eyes. Even though my laptop of capable of full rainbow RGB, I always just have it set to red for this reason.
About the battery tips at the beginning, I have a question. I turned on battery care mode on my ASUS laptop - is it alright to just keep the PC plugged in day and night continuously even when I'm not using it, then? Is that the best way to preserve the battery or am I supposed to unplug it every night when going to bed or every time I leave my home?
It all depends on the Display Port capabilities of your USB-C DP alternate mode output, don't use a dock for Video Output if you expect high performances.
@@kypdurron Cheers for the reply Kypdurron. Alright so for my main gaming monitor, you recommend plugging that directly into the laptop. Then use the docking station for the secondary 60hz monitor as well as mouse, and other peripherals. What reliable docking station or perhaps brand, would you recommend? I suppose with Thunderbolt 5 out now, it might be worth waiting for a docking station that supports that.
Hi Jarrod, I have one of those laptop cooling stands, and mind you, not the “snake oil” ones. It is airtight around the sides and pushes air through the intakes, and seems to help my laptop cool down during high graphic gaming. This is really helpful as I use a Legion 5i Pro with the i9 and 4070. The cooling stand has filters to prevent dust from entering the intake. Do you think it is helpful by any chance? It seems to cool the laptop down by a few degrees but I haven’t seen any major performance changes. In conclusion, do you think it is safe to be using gpu and cpu over clock? Thanks
Hey Jarrod, just a question. Say I upgraded to the newer version of the current gaming laptop I have but I feel lazy trying to redownload everything, can I just put in my old nvme drive in the new laptop?
Found your channel recently, I am in the "Comparing laptops" stage of pre purchase and it's painful, will probably end up with a Lenovo though. Thanks for all the content, it's been very helpful!
Hey Jarrod I'm a bit of a laptop noob and have been out of the loop on the hardware side. I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop for my quest 3 and possibly to future proof for other VR headsets. Should I save for a 4080 laptop or should I go for a 5000 series laptop? (A desktop is not an option for me)
I couldn't remember most of them but I did recall to change the RGB to red...huge increase in performance, thanks Jarrod! ...but seriously, great list!
So If I carry my MacBook in a messenger bag that has separate compartment for laptop, lining material are cotton and polyester blend. Will it eventually leave a micri scratches on it?
Just a clarification question on the battery and charger 1. Should I just always plug in the charger regardless if I am using it or not (shut down)? 2. Should I enable the battery limiter then when it reaches the limit I unplug the cable or not? or do i just manually wait for it to reach 80%?
i have a laptop with a single stick of 12gb ddr5 ram (i have no idea why they didnt just use 8gb or 16gb) should i buy another 8gb stick? will it improve performance significantly? I mostly play fps games like apex or valorant
This may be a bit of an outlier but wanted to mention: Consider GPU first then CPU yes, BUT definitely think long and hard about CPU if: - You play competitive shooters. Your GPU might push 100+ FPS in whatever multiplayer FPS comes out in 5 years but it's going to be unbelievably hard to aim if your CPU can't keep up. Doubly so if you're also in a discord call at the same time. Learned this from having to cap Apex at 90FPS even though I could push 100, and Halo Infinite at 60 even though I could push 70-90 on an i5 7300HQ/1050ti laptop. Sometimes you're fine dropping settings but your CPU just won't keep up. - You wanna play anything emulated since those need waaaaay more CPU power than GPU. RPCS3 on a 4c/4t is a PITA for anything that came out after 2008
With CASO now built into Windows 11 machines, is Advanced Optimus all that important any more? I ask because my new rig has a great display but surprisingly lacks this feature. My understanding is that manually selecting dgpu and rebooting gives a slight fps increase anyway, but with CASO even this may not be necessary now. Thoughts anyone?
Yeah, no bullshit, just simple true stuff, and jump from zero knowledge to enthusiast in only 10 min for most people. Best video for anyone before buying new laptop
Can I run my gaming laptop without the battery, i am on holiday for almost a year before i go to school so i don't want my laptop battery to degrade fast since i will be gaming a lot. Is this ideal??
I don't know about tip 32: on my Lenovo Legion Y540-15IRH, after the bios update (if i recall correctly, it was either version 40 or 42, something like that), keyboard stopped working in any OS i boot (Windows, Linux, etc). Keyboard works only in BIOS and when booted in any OS, only certain functional buttons are working (Brightness UP/DOWN, trackpad ON/OFF etc, but none of the other buttons work. I have read forums and people said that the latest BIOS update resulted in breaking the keyboard controller somehow, and, apparently, reverting BIOS to the older version does not help.

LMFAOOO the cpu wasn't bottlenecking anything, the limiting factor was thunderbolt.
2:00 number one tip which most of these channel viewers can follow
I am buying Asus TUF A15 with ryzen 5 and RTX 3050 (is this laptop good or should I buy another) srry for bad english XD
Its good enough but dont expect it to run AAA titles at the highest settings. But graphics are so good nowadays that even low settings look great
@whybndsu Thank
applause for the thumbnail! 👏
Jarrod edging the screws to 90% is crazy.
is optimus results right ? (4:18) It seems more FPS if optimus off and you ay it's better to use it. Maybe i do not read results correctly.
Hello, if you were to choose between a TUF F15 and Nitro V 16, which one would you choose? If GPU/RAM/SSD are the same, and both 2023 versions
What future proof dock do people recommend for some one who wants to have 2x 4k monitors, that supports high refresh rates?
It all depends on the Display Port capabilities of your USB-C DP alternate mode output, don't use a dock for Video Output if you expect high performances.
@@kypdurron Cheers for the reply Kypdurron.
Alright so for my main gaming monitor, you recommend plugging that directly into the laptop. Then use the docking station for the secondary 60hz monitor as well as mouse, and other peripherals.
What reliable docking station or perhaps brand, would you recommend? I suppose with Thunderbolt 5 out now, it might be worth waiting for a docking station that supports that.
Hi Jarrod,
I have one of those laptop cooling stands, and mind you, not the “snake oil” ones. Thanks
8:42 hey Jarrod, what if my laptop uses Liquid Metal? how do i safely replace that??
9:59 is crazy
Shows 10:00 to me
Hey Jarrod, just a question.
Thanks for all the content, it's been very helpful!
lenovo's are rlly solid rn, get a legion if youve got a lot of money and LOQ if youre short
@Thormey2007 I was looking at the LOQ with 4070, seems like a tremendous deal.
(A desktop is not an option for me)
HP Victus doesn't have option to limit battery to 80% in BIOS or OMEN Gaming Hub, what are other ways to protect battery longevity?
I couldn't remember most of them but I did recall to change the RGB to red...huge increase in performance, thanks Jarrod!
...but seriously, great list!
3:38 You do the best AND most in depth reviews Jarrod, not some 👍
surprised christmas wasnt another day to get a lap top
So If I carry my MacBook in a messenger bag that has separate compartment for laptop, lining material are cotton and polyester blend. Will it eventually leave a micri scratches on it?

It’s actually called “faster than lightning itself”
@@Testimony201 erm actually
My gaming laptop has nvidia rtx 3050 and intel, is that a bad graphics card? any recommendations to prevent stuttering in games?
Just a clarification question on the battery and charger
1. Should I just always plug in the charger regardless if I am using it or not (shut down)?
2. Should I enable the battery limiter then when it reaches the limit I unplug the cable or not? or do i just manually wait for it to reach 80%?
1. Unplug if not in use
2. Keep the plug on regardless if it reaches the limit
@@luississippi i have an hp victus 16 that cant limit the battery to a certain amount. Is it a problem if i keep it plugged in at 100%..?
@@luississippi got it thanks!
@@glensakul8587 im sure there is one on its BIOS, check it and do a little bit of research first
Great tips. A bit much at once. A longer video the 40+ crowd? 😉
So should I leave the charger on or no if it’s on 100% and I’m not using it?
You can also uninstal Nvidia audio driver for additional fps boost.
Tip 45. What if I have liquid metal cooling on GPU in my laptop? How often would I have to replace such a cooling system?
2:02 I have a friend that broke like 3 keyboards in a couple years by smoking near his PC and not clean it.
i have a laptop with a single stick of 12gb ddr5 ram (i have no idea why they didnt just use 8gb or 16gb)
should i buy another 8gb stick? will it improve performance significantly? I mostly play fps games like apex or valorant
This may be a bit of an outlier but wanted to mention:
Consider GPU first then CPU yes, BUT definitely think long and hard about CPU if:
- You play competitive shooters.
RPCS3 on a 4c/4t is a PITA for anything that came out after 2008
I killed 2 birds with one stone by considering both
Ive 5800h and 3070m and i get cpu limited in some games lol
I have an hp victus 16 which cant limit the battery to a certain amount, is it a problem if i keep it plugged in at 100%..?
With CASO now built into Windows 11 machines, is Advanced Optimus all that important any more? I ask because my new rig has a great display but surprisingly lacks this feature.
My understanding is that manually selecting dgpu and rebooting gives a slight fps increase anyway, but with CASO even this may not be necessary now. Thoughts anyone?
Can someone confirm if core isolation is okay to turn off if i have third party security software on my laptop?
Yeah, no bullshit, just simple true stuff, and jump from zero knowledge to enthusiast in only 10 min for most people. Best video for anyone before buying new laptop
Can I run my gaming laptop without the battery, i am on holiday for almost a year before i go to school so i don't want my laptop battery to degrade fast since i will be gaming a lot. Is this ideal??
Hp omen 16 is great. Lasted me 2 years so far. And runs everything smoothly
should i wait for the rtx 5050 to get released for prices of the 4050 and 3050 to drop?
As someone who will be getting his first gaming laptop or just laptop, your Chanel is incredibly helpful, coming from console, i would just insert the disc and that's it, but now i feel like a boomer lol am 26, but now am getting my head around stuff really well and all thanks for your Yo channel !!!🎉❤️

hi jarrod just wanna ask is it safe if my gaming laptop cpu goes around 80-95°c on gaming?
Tip only for Ryzen users. Limit your processor's GHZ to avoid temperature increases, between 3.8 and 4.4 :)
32GB is the new standard for gaming laptop today. You can live with 16GB sure but 32GB will enable you to do more things while gaming.
Can you compare the Acer Nitro V 16 (RTX 4050, Ryzen 7) and the Lenovo LOQ (RTX 4050, Core i5)?
