If so, the answer is as long as you are recloning back to same computer with the same hardware, it's no problem ! :-D
If I had an old computer should I just download the setup and transfer it to a thumb drive and then new that in my new computer and take the snapshot and then save the snapshot in that same thum drive and save it for future use?
Its kinda scary that this popped up in my recommended because I'm actually getting a laptop of my own soon lol

To everyone wondering why it's better to back up the stock settings from the factory is because all drivers that were installed when you bought it are optimal for the laptop. If you fresh install windows we have to download the drivers which is newer than the stock ones which may or may not mess up the current state of the system. Not to mention windows updates are known to cause issues so yeah. Its up to you really whichever you prefer.

@@monojeons It you are talking about the built in windows restart, then it will ONLY restore to your most recent windows 10 update, not to the original pristine condition when you just got your laptop, that is why knowing this video is so useful, you will forever have the actual clone with you.
@@prince24117 I hope you are having fun using your new laptop ! The space you will need depends entirely on what is currently in your computer, so I cannot give you an estimate here.
I did this a week ago to my 9 year old laptop. It was always blowing the fan really loud for no reason lately. Reverted it back to 2014 and after a day of catching up to 9 years of updates, now it's nice and quiet again. Was gonna buy a new laptop this year if this didn't help, luckily it did. Really recommend this.
Also don't bother waiting to create the image until after you've customized it with all the programs that you like to use because they're going to be so out of date they won't even update anymore so you'd have to uninstall them anyway and it just makes the image bigger than it has to be.
Everything that you have said are words of gold here, I really REALLY hope people can read your comment and realize just how important this is.

@@BracerJack just wanted to update. The fan noise came back not very long after. Seems my hardware isn't compatible with the codecs youtube uses, simply too old, and thus they put a large strain on the CPU, so unfortunately reverting to old image doesn't always fix it.
@@DoozyyTV Try to set the resolution to lower, that will stress your system a little less :-)

@@DoozyyTV Late but in youtube settings you can choose which codec it uses, maybe choose the older one and see if it works better, if you haven't tried that?
For those complaining about the OOB snapshot being out of date, you can use Macrium Reflect at ANY time to back up your machine this way, so you'll always have a current system image to return to. Of course, this would require a larger backup disk (usb, external drive, etc). Once backed up, you can even remove the OEM restore image if allowed, knowing you have a better version of the system image available.

How big of an external hard drive does this require?
@@kylecurry1410 for a drive dedicated to these types of backups, I would ensure it is at least double the size of the hard drive you wish to back up. If larger, it affords you the option of keeping multiple point in time backups to return to at any time.

Hello Sebastian, if your PC is still working well, don't worry too much about the fact that you have connected to the internet, you may proceed to do the clone now.
Try not to delay any longer, the longer you delay, the more junk accumulates in your system.

@@BracerJack It actually helps me throughout my college. I installed many softwares on my laptop and many saved files. Much faster than installing a new windows 11. I gave my L340 laptop to my father and transfer to M2 Macbook air because of the fanless design.

Nice to know someone else does that, too! I started doing a "pre-first-boot backup" so that I never even get to the initial setup boot before my first backup is done. Exact same process, only my first boot is from the USB stick.
The reason I started doing that is because if I ever sell the laptop, I can either give it a "new out of the box experience" for whoever buys it, or I can pull the HD/SSD, replace it with a new one, and restore the original PRE-1st-Boot system image, while not wasting time worrying about lost files, as I keep the original drives with me.
It works out to the same as having OEM reinstall disks...which NOBODY includes in the box any more, and most wont' even sell them to you, even if you're willing to pay extra for them!

I also made a clone right after purchase for this very reason, if you ever decide to sell it, you reclone it back to the original "just purchased" state so that the next user will also have the exact "just purchased" state of the laptop.
I miss those oem disks...

This will depend heavily upon the laptop you buy. I bought a new gaming laptop that was basically broken at the driver level when I bought it, and it didn't start working properly until I had updated everything I could. Not all manufacturers will make sure that their firmware is in order right out of the box, so keep that in mind before backing up your system image.
Which horrible manufacturer is that [I have one in mind he he he], I will avoid that brand forever, how dare they publish a laptop with a bad driver that does not work probably and hope for the best, terrible.

One very, very, important thing I did that saved my rear many times was to make a copy of the original Nvidia/Video card driver and place it in somewhere safe. For some reason, that version of driver is the only one that my laptop runs without problems!
And THAT is the reason why a clone is so good, any "update" forced down our throats, if it ends badly, can always be restored :D

To prevent the idea that your computer is slowing down, check your power options and turn off the "Turn on fast start up" option. This option does not allow your computer to fully cycle through a starting process. It bypasses small updates and special driver refreshes that are needed. Also, The Sleep option is worse for your battery than Hibernate. So be conscious of your power options and you will have a better time.

Thanks for that. We think alike. Before I bought this machine I had already made a bootable disc imaging drive. Thus I imaged my system so that I can restore it to the state it was in before I bought it, and I have kept the image on a NAS, USB drive and on one of my onboard drives. Perfectionism does not hurt in IT.

Having a system image is one of the BEST thing anyone can do to save their system.
I usually do a clean install whenever I buy a new laptop. I look at the system, I make a note of what the company's update assistant or support assistant is, and then I do a clean install of Windows. Then I installed the update assistant or support assistant app, and I start setting it up exactly how I want. Then I back up the image.
For a lot of users, this wouldn't be ideal, but I typically do clean installs at least every year on all of my devices. It's just how I roll.
You are correct to say that for a lot of users, this wouldn't be ideal because they might un-install important stuff, but the cool thing about the cloning technique is once the clone is made, they can try to un-install what they know are bloats, and if they accidentally removed the wrong stuff, no big deal, they already have a clone of what was, no damage is done :D
But your advise is sound for experts, remove the bloat and then make a clone.

I tried to update my drivers, but accidentally installed the wrong drivers. Radeon wouldn't work and my laptop wouldnt detect the GPU. I couldnt find a way to restore the old drivers. Good thing i found your video before I bought my laptop. Did a reset to a previous image before I updated the drivers, now everything is working great. Thank you bro!

I always do exactly what you've described here, with one change. Every time I buy a new computer the hard drive is always configured as one partition, no matter how big the drive is. So I always shrink the partition, and then create a 2nd partition in the free space. I can then store all my data on the 2nd partition, including disk images of my OS on 1st partition, and can backup/restore the 1st partition at any time without losing my data.

I did connected internet connection and created windows account and updated windows to windows 11
After that one youtuber suggested an
app called driver booster
I updated all drivers which were shown by that app
Can I redo everything
Can I go back to earlier settings before that app installed
Or at very first state ( the state where pendrive backup suggest by you)
Please suggest any solution
I think after driver update by that app
My battery backup is halved

Yes, please do this FIRST before anything.
After you have made the clone you can un-install the program, you wouldn't need it anymore since the clone is done.

Hello! First of all, very informative video and I have to thank you for keeping it simple and easy to understand :) Second, I bought a new laptop and am planning to back it up following this video but I also want to set up linux distro to use alongside windows, I am very new to installing another OS besides windows so I'm wondering if I can have both the OS and snapshot in the same ssb/usb? I have both an ssb and a spare usb which I was planning to store the distro on but it's fairly small and only 16 gb. Would I have to keep them separate? Thanks!

I am not experienced in installing/having two OSes in the same computer besides virtual machining but I understand that is not what you are referring to here.
You can DEFINITELY have multiple clones on the same drive, no problem, I do that ALL the time, I have multiple states of my laptops all on the same external drive, no issue whatsoever, just remember to re-name them properly so you know which one belongs to which.
Assuming you have not installed anything too big and everything is as pure as can be including all usually required drivers, the file size should be about 18.6 GB.
The masterboot USB which is another separate device, only requires 600mb.
I really wish I'd come across this video before my old Asus laptop suffered the blue screen of death. Might have saved me there but I'm definitely keeping this for future use, thank you so much! You'll be saving my family and I quite a number of times 😅

I saw someone asking if they needed 1 or 2 external devices for this procedure and you said 2 but to be honest I don't quite get it yet... So please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm getting that for the *snapshot image step* is needed 1 portable drive BUT if you want to make the *restoration part* (let's say beacuse of a virus) then that's when you will need a second portable drive or usb, is that it?

I will keep my words to a minimum so that it have less chance for error and if you don't understand you can ask more.
Answer:
The USB drive is used to boot the system into a mode to accept the clone file.
The other external SSD drive is the drive actually containing the clone file.

Hey Jack, thanks for the video. I have a question, my laptop is roughly 3 weeks old and I have several programs installed on it already. I would still like to take a system image. However, I already have 150 GBs of data on my SSD and cannot screenshot it onto my 32 GB pendrive, what should I do? Will the process still work if I deselect my SSD file and screenshot the rest? I feel your dilemma.
See if you can "temporarily" transfer your files and data into a separate drive.
And then if nothing else "private" or "personal" in your system, execute the clone.
But I must tell you though :-( It isn't going to be "straight out of manufacture" state when you made the clone, it will be as your computer is now.
Could be worst though...you could have NEVER made the clone and have nothing and nowhere to return to, now THAT would be truly horrible.

Watch out, also for m$oft updates, with regards to any hardware/firmware '' updates'' ! ONLY USE THE MANUFACTURERS'' drivers ! Especiallly bios ! i have flashed bios updates, many times. ya gotta know whats' goin on in there .....
