there is an old legend that an f4u-1c corsair crashed landed in san francisto bay but a frfiend and i salvaged the plane and the 20mm cannon fired and we hit the deck for 5 minutes.
Oil pools in the lowers cylinders and you have to turns engine over for a few revolutions to blow the oil into the exaust or it creates an abnormaly high compression rate which would damage cylinders on start-up. Vintage Corsairs took a little more effort to start without modern elect. starters. Kinda like an old Harley.
It's one that's been painted to match his famous Corsair. I remember reading in Air Classics a few years ago an article about this plane. They were doing engine tests, and the plane was painted all white except for the "29" and the Jolly Roger on the cowling. The article stated they were going to paint it to look like Kepford's plane.
I dunno...that guy leaning on the wing doesn't look like he's doing any harm. Probably a friend of the pilot; I don't know too many guys who would let just anybody lean on their plane. Tough startup...sure would be nice to have some 130 octane in the tanks...
I've been reading some of the post. Believe me, I'm sure the pilot had to have known the gentleman next to the wing. I've crewed both a TBM and a B-25 and always yell "CLEAR!" to those around. We don't do a thing unless it's safe. Really, that goes for any aircraft.
While I agree that one shouldn't touch any property that is not theirs, we humans when examining something interesting have a tendency to want to touch, as well as look. Usually a brief touch, just to get the feeling. I have an old car, and at car shows folks just seem to want to touch it. If they're female and attractive, I just might allow it. :) Nice plane, nice vid.
my ultimate dream is to fly to an island like midway, raise one of these babies from the ocean, restore it on the island, then fly it back to the mainland
I have a personally signed copy of Pappys' book that was purchased by me and my father @ Tamiami Airshow/Races in the late '70,s if anyone is interested in owning it?

That's so annoying. If I had been that guy, I would have said, "Oh, I'm sorry - I'm in your shot. Let me stand out of the way." Still, it's a great video nonetheless.
This is way past Cool!!! Where are you out of? My father was a member of the Jolly Rogers toward the end of the war and would like to look at the plane upclose.
good god what a machine! wow!
That is the cleanest airplane I have ever seen---you could do open heart surgery on any part of that plane with no risk of infection!

Is this Ira Kepford's original F4U-1A or is it a remake like the B-17G named "909"?
From the cockpit view, it looks like if you drop your keys on the floor...they are pretty much gone.
i mean another one
is it normal for a Corsair to take this much effort to start?
13 foot 1 inch excatly. i fly a -1c corsair for a friend of mine.
my great uncle lost oxygen in one of these in ww2 and unfortunately crashed...

Skydiving is the closest I'll get to owning my own plane. Just out of curiosity. How much does a toy like that cost to buy, insure, & feed/maintain?
I thought the same thing.....
@Nza420 sorry for your uncle
OUCH... Like I said. I'll never own one :-(.
jolly-rogers
Thumbs up if you think your computer is not loud enough...

I read Major "Pappy" Gregory Boyington's autobiography; it was good reading and I highly recommend it. Sorry I can't remember the title.
