Me 109 found in Russian lake.

This Bf 109 was built in 1939. it was known to have flown in battle of France and the battle of Britain as an E1. After upgrade to an E7 it was delivered to the eastern front where it was flown by the highly decorated German pilot Wulf- Dietrich Widowitz. He was shot down by a Hurricane whilst on an escort mission in 1942.He made a near perfect, forced, wheels-up landing on the ice of a frozen ...

An interesting aircraft, I once had a chance to participate in the restoration of a similar one. At first, it even seemed that this was the same plane
It appears to be a Bf109F. No bulges in the cowling as had the Bf109G. But it also has two 20mm gun ports in each wing, so that’s odd. Good research project for an old Luftwaffe plane buff like me.
+ @markwilliams974 This one left the factory in 1939 as a Bf-109E-1 and by 1940 it had been upgraded to Bf-109E-7. It must have spent some time in North Africa before it was transferred to 5./JG5 as "Red 6." It flew as an E-7 until it was downed in April 1942 and force-landed on the frozen lake in Russia.

Such a poignant yet ethereal video. I find myself thinking that after this machine being shot down and entombed for decades cold and alone and then waking up to former foes surrounding it they simply say "hello old friend, we have a story to tell you as a friend now"
ME 109 E model. Yellow nose was for recognition.
It's nice to see the remains of a Nazi airplane that has forever lost the ability to bring evil and grief.

The Bf109, and similarly, aircraft such as the Spitfire and Fw190, represented impressive technical achievement. I am always struck by that when I see one.
I hope they plan to fully restore this plane to fly again someday. It would be an utter disgusting waste, and insult to history to see the metal corrode and rot over time without treatment.
+Bill Allenbaugh The current owners have been planning to fully restore it to airworthy, but may have recently changed their minds. They had started with finding a rare NOS crate engine to replace the damaged one. But no new info on the plans.

That cold water in them lakes keeps bugs at bay. Quite often they fish these planes out and the undercarrages can still support the airframe.

+Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles The are other planes in those lakes but the local laws and local interest have to allow them to be removed. And some went down with live ordnance in them that would need to be disarmed.

So sad to see an old true war bird fallen, and beaten, the remains are a shadow and a reminder of the beauty of the messersmith, let this fighter of the skies rest
Hoffentlich finden wir unseren Urgroßvater und dessen Vater sie haben beide in Russland gekämpft einer zu Boden und mein Urgroßvater zur Luft Mal sehen was bei der Diakonie raus kommt ob wir die beiden irgendwann noch zu Grabe tragen können das ist mein innigster wunsch zu mehr bin ich nicht geboren.
