    It's amazing that with any of these warbird videos the arguments that crop up about what plane can do what & this & that. We all have our favorites from that distant past. To me, it was just the sheer volume of aircraft in the air that was mind boggling. Those times will never be again. This is a fine example of a 109 & the supercharger has a sound all its own.

    Beautiful plane. Fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, inverted V-12 generating 1775 hp, with four 7.92mm guns. Oh, and don't forget about the 20mm autocannon firing through the propeller hub. At the time, this plane was simply astonishing.

    this (for me) is a very beautiful and clean fighter. thin minimal-drag wings, powerful engine, reasonable performance at all but the highest altitudes, devastating armament (2X 13mm MG131 nose mounted and a 15/20mm MG151 or 30mm MK108 firing thru the hub)... beautiful.

    It's amazing to see WWII warplanes in old WWII B&W footage and then see them in real modern color camera footage. It just goes to show you that the country music song "In Color" is true. When they are in B&W, it doesn't seem real until you have seen it in color.

    The reason for the painted swirl was "safety". After arming and refueling these types of aircraft for months on end it was easy to overlook the noise of a running engine. Ground crew and anyone in proximity to a spinning prop needed a visual "reference" as to whether or not there was the possibility of injury. Thus the "painted spinner".

    for the guys who dont speak german, the pilot is talking about the throttle he uses, the machine has no weapons onboard so it is about a half ton lighter . he only uses 2/3 of the max power for the take off.

    I liked the G2 best as it was a good all round plane, the G10 was a great plane at altitude,it was well armed and power full but lacked the nimbleness of the G2.

    They had initial plans to produce a number of new-build Me-109s, but the lack of surviving engines prevented this project. They have been working on a Fw190D-9 project that will use a modified Allison V12 with custom exhausts. One has been delivered to a customer, but has not flown yet. I don't know how many D-9s they plan to build.

    @groovy67 You got that right! Many had accidents on takeoff too. Not hard to believe, with the sideways torque of the engine, the narrow landing gear footprint, and the lack of forward view over the cowling. What a thrill to be able to fly one of these birds. No other sound like it...

    P-51 pilots were instructed not to fly inverted for longer than 10 seconds because the Merlin would begin to have damage from oil starvation. So a 20+ mile flight across the Channel without oil is pure bunk. However, the radials such as the R-2800 had a reputation for ruggedness and brought pilots home after having severe damage.

    The E,F,G and K model were responsible for destroying more planes than any other in history. It is THE most successful fighter plane in the history of air warfare by far. It was also the personal mount to not only the highest scoring aces ever, but the most aces as well.

  • @tpsossff

    When the war moved back into Europe it was the Spits and Hurricans that needed the big fuel loads and that was a big problem until long range versions and P51s came on line.

    Forget the Me 109 for a minute..I saw a Feisler Storch at an air display at Liverpool airport and with a slight headwind it could actually hover..absolutely brilliant..I also saw a Me 108(No ..not a 109) at the same show..it looked identical..but strangely fragile for a war plane.Inverted 'V' fuel injected engine...they were Sooooooo advanced.The cannon used to recoil between the pilots feet there was so little room.

    Hi, have a book that says the spiral was to put allied gunners of their aim, "The spinner is decorated with the widely used 'Spiralschnauze' marking designed to put bomber gunners off their aim - a marking that was surprisingly effective". I also heard in a documentary that that this was so they could be identified as German aircrafts from the front. It is of cause also incredibly cool.

  • @tpsossff

    @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH
    My understanding was that negative G caused a momentary fuel starvation that, due to the float in the carb being forced to the bottom, developed in to a massive fuel overflow which led to a disasterous engine shut down. Miss Shillings device largely prevented this on the Merlins. Flying inverted in level flight is negative G just as pitching the nose continuously down from normal flight.

  • @Osomeguy
    @Osomeguy 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    They designed it that way so that there would be no need for hard points in the wing to support the landing gear. This enabled the wings to be lighter.

    Original Me 109 engine was a DB601 inverted vee-12 engine while the Merlin was right side up v12. Me109 also had fuel injection and turbo charging for higher power at altitude. The power of those engines on the small airframe/ spindly narrow track undercarriage made handling on the ground tricky and dangerous and led to many losses by accident rather than enemy action, this comes over well in this video

    The original plan for Black 6 was to fly it for a limited time and put it in the museum. I think the mishap happened on the final flight, unfortunately. It's been fully repaired. You are correct that it's one of the most original examples left and too valuable to risk.

  • @veltro75
    @veltro75 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    True. The landing gear were a problem that plagued the 109 until the end of the war. Same with the Spitfire to a certain degree. The Spit's successor, the Supermarine Spiteful used wider spaced inward retracting gear. I think maybe the final Spitfire marks did as well.

    Only the prototype Fw190 had the oversized spinner. Overheating was such a problem that it led the test pilot to comment that it was like sitting with his feet in a fireplace. The cockpit was moved rearward and the production Fw190s had a geared cooling fan behind the propeller (geared to rotate at 3x propeller speed) for forced-air cooling.

These one seen on the vid is beeing rebuilt after a bad crash it had. It was from private persons, but they don´t have the money to restaurate it and therefor the messerschmidt Stiftung bought it.

    It's a real on. The Spanish counterparts used Merlin engines and also has a different nose to comply with the merlin engine.
    Easy to tell:

    Spitfires were converted to use from aircraft carriers..They were named 'seafires' and the landing gear was widened to accomodate a heaving deck.Spitfires were constantly upgraded through the war ..one model was a whole new ball game but looked identical to its predecessors except that it was four inches longer..not noticable to German Pilots at first sighting.....until they had to mix it with them..Mitchell got the airframe right with the first designs..a real love affair..which never ends!

    Agree that the 109s certainly outclassed Hurricans in a straight fight but its overall success was due to many other factors. Its construction enabled it to be readily repaired if damaged, over home ground had a better chance of landing if damaged, could stay and fight longer when the enemy had to cut and run while he still had fuel to get home.
