    I love the sound of that Skyraider idling up to park. It adds a lot to this video.

    The usual way a big radial starts goes exactly like this: backfiring, leaking fuel, smoking, shaking. Only radials can start like this. Lovely :D

    As it was taxing off, the rear view shows just how big the props were on these things! No wonder they needed the gull wings!

    • @larrypeterson8710
      @larrypeterson8710 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gull wings were added to enable the use of short, strong landing gear for the carrier landings which the Corsair was ultimately not used for. The huge prop was to harness the massive output of the R-2800.

    Skyraiders used Wright radials and the F4U Pratt and Whitney radials , both good powerplants, reliable and rugged.

  • @WrathofWotan
    @WrathofWotan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    SWEET!! There's nothing finer than the gnarly growl of a big phatt Pratt!
    ***** - that was not a P-47 folding it's wings; it's a Douglas AD Skyraider, which flew off carriers during Korean and Vietnam conflicts. It was a very heavy-lifting ground attack aircraft - rumoured to be able to heave it's own weight in ordnance off a carrier deck!

    • @WrathofWotan
      @WrathofWotan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      soaringtractor My original comment about the 'big phatt Pratt' was referring to the F4U Corsair engine sound. and the comment about the AD Skyraider concerned folding wings.

    • @hudsonhollow
      @hudsonhollow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of the main reasons for replacing the Skyraiders was that the Navy no longer wanted to carry that much gasoline onboard. They were still capable of doing certain jobs better than any other aircraft when they were finally replaced.

    Reminds me of the gas older gas tractors on the farm,temperamental, had to choke just right,but after you get them running and warmed up, good to go.

    I worked ever so briefly on the Spad or "Sandy" as they were called back in '68. It was a flying dump truck; look at all those wing stations for me to mount ordnance on!! Love the Corsair also; never had the chance to work on them, sadly. Both are beautiful machines from a by-gone era.

    Starting these types of radials is very systematic and tricky. First crank is w/o mags to clear the oil from the lower cylinders (you'll see hand cranking on some of the bombers for this purpose). Next, there is no primer system, so the engines must be almost flooded to get the mixture going. Then it is a process of adjusting (quickly) the mixtures to get it firing properly. Occasionally, you'll actually see a puddle of fuel under the engine from the over-rich mixtures.

  • @dalecomer5951
    @dalecomer5951 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Big bro' steals the show! Can't beat the sound of the R-3350 as the big Skyraider struggles to taxi on the turf (something which it was not redesigned to do).

    @aeroguy86 RedBull has the money and respect for the aircraft to keep it running in top shape. I salute them for that at least. We need more like them to keep these beauties from being claimed by time and neglect.

    I have an Original Flight Manual to the F4U-4 Corsair dated 1945. That's the source for the procedure I gave you. We also have a TBF Avenger based here at our airport. I know the owner very well (I'm a flight instructor and give him his biennial flight reviews). Anyway- He is the one that told me the trick for stirring the oil. It has the same engine as the Corsair. It's not a published procedure but a common one shared in the war bird community.

    That is so true. I've got a tad over 1,000 hrs behind 1340's in B model Cats and a 301, and I LOVE em! But, knowledgeable radial pilots AND mechanics who can work on them are a dying breed. Fortunately I learned from an OLD ag pilot who had thousands of hours on radials.

    A buddy of mine was a Hellcat pilot in WWII. He says the Corsair was a beast - too much power, blackout dives, hard to land on a carrier. He switched back to the Hellcat after trying the Corsair. Hellcat was a pussycat compared to the Ensign Eliminator.

    Mixture is closed for starting F4Us so there's no "air/fuel mixture" to be "correct" when starting engine. It's all in Priming. Sending fuel to the carburetor, either by manual primer pump or electric fuel boost pump. Over prime & then you have to crank & crank to clear the system. Also on Big Radial engines oil pools in the lower cylinders. A common practice is to have fuel off & crank the engine (using starter only - slowly) to stir the oil. Then the introduce fuel & crank again for starting.

    Once upon a time I owned a '41 Stearman...kept it about 4 years and somebody came along who wanted it more than me. I wore an old fashioned cloth "helmet" with the ear holes for a set of David Clark headphone. It had no radio, just an intercom so I could communicate with a passenger. I think I bought the intercom from Sportys...The R-670 sounded good..but not as good as the corsair.

    Red Bull owns the airplane and pretty much puts that on everything they own. Like or not they have done a lot of very fine restorations on airplanes and fly stuff you wouldn't normally get to see flying anymore. A small price to pay for it to show up at your venue flying so you don't have to visit it in a museum.

  • @Ravennator
    @Ravennator 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Billt460, he is starting it on prime and the engines catches and doesn't. Its a fine dance with air to fuel mixture. Once it finally get the right amount, it starts. Notice he did a small run up to see if it wanted to play before he taxi'd out. R-2800, a sweet sound...

    @airsoftisawsome at times, yes. Radials, especially big ones like the R2800 can be a bit cantankerous at times. Usually they're not that hard, but at times, they need a little "finess"!! That's just all part of what makes a round motor grand!!

    @kblackav8or Lucky guess, I have never even been out of California. I know its a rarity to see them flying, no matter what type of vintage warbird it is. I would love to see them operational regardless, but would still prefer to see them painted with their traditional colors, it adds that extra emotion to it, I personally believe. I can live with it too, just takes away that extra feeling of being there during the actual war days. Still a nice plane, just not too fond of the paint scheme.

  • @aeroguy86

  • @agcatdriver
    @agcatdriver 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @aeroguy86 how many hours did you say you have flying aircraft with R2800 engines? How many starts? This engine never "backfired" once... what you hear is individual cylinders firing while the engine is trying to start... if it had backfired, everyone within a mile would have heard it! If anything, the pilot hadnt primed it quite enough, but without knowing if this was a cold start or hot start, it cant be said for sure.

    @groovy67 Like I said - the plane might be sitting in a museum now and not flying. It's only paint. Look at all the stuff that is flying now because the folks at Red Bull restore and FLY them all over the world so people can see them. It's ONLY PAINT. Honestly I think they would overlook the fact that there is some art on it for the fact it is out being flown and enjoyed by people. Been to the Reno Air Races? Look at what they do to these planes. Cut wings, custom paint.

  • @agcatdriver
    @agcatdriver 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @aeroguy86 Oh okay... so you havent actually FLOWN, OPERATED, or STARTED anything with a radial engine, let alone an R2800. You have RIDDEN in a B-17 and a B-24, which are both powered by Wright 1820 single row radials that are a HECK of alot different than the twin row R2800 in the way they are operated. I've got 7,000 hrs tt, with a tad over a thousand hours of it being round engines... 150 on the twin R2800 powered CL-215... yet you're the expert radial engine guy... okay.
