  • The Sony HX-99 is a tiny, ultralight camera with a huge zoom range and 4k video. Is it the perfect hiking camera for you?
If you want to support the channel, please drop the video a like and subscribe, it really helps.
If you want to say thanks for any of my content you can always buy me a coffee - I don't actually drink coffee so any money received would be spent on used camping gear and the odd can of own-brand energy drink.

Which camera would you go for? The big RX10IV or the tiny HX-99?

Very impressive footage from such a small sensor, well done thanks for posting. 🎉

Thanks. I've been using it quite a bit lately on hikes. The 4k does look good, given the small sensor.

Seems like a good bit of kit, especially the zoom 👍😁

Good for your kayaking to get some wildlife, assuming you don't drop it in!

    Great video Kev.
I think as a hiker then the 2 camera swap is a great idea. I take my camera but often miss the shots as I can’t be bothered taking it out of the backpack.
That compact was fantastic and the Ultra 4K with zoom is a winner.
    You’ve got me thinking 🤔👍

Yeah, I've loved the RX10IV as it was a lot more convenient than my APSC and full frame cameras. But over time I just found I wasn't taking it with me that much, so I'd miss odd bits of wildlife etc. The small superzoom camera is just no problem to carry and as I'm shooting more video these days having 4k on it really helps.
I think the RXOM2 is a cool little camera, albeit one with a few foibles!

We are avid hikers and if trying to stay light use an action camera and the Rx100vii (takes great photos and video but limited to 200mm lens). Another jewel in my view…the Sony ax53; 4K, about 650 g with battery (last forever) and goes to about 500mm (optical) but with some wonderful stab (no need to tripod) and decent internal microphone (or use external). Probably my favorite gear I own (if I don’t want photos). Looking for a camera somewhere in between for great photos but so hard to find. Prefer total kit around 1kg max. And it is as much about volume as weight. Appreciate your update…this camera is very tempting too for those long range shots!

I looked at the Rx100 series, but they're expensive and have less zoom range, but the little RX0M2 rugged camera has the same sensor from the RX100 series, just without the zoom and a few other features!
That AX53 does look interesting, still commands a high price used... I'll keep my eyes open for one.

@@gordon3988 they crop up here for between £2-300. You can still get them new for around £4-450. I was lucky with mine, snapped it up when I saw it. Glad I did.

@@TheWalkingKeva second question if I may…were most of the videos taken in 4K or 1080? Reason I ask is that the stabilization is much better in 1080 (extra levels,of stab) and your video looked pretty stable. I can’t seem to find any used here, and few even available new.

      @TheWalkingKev  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@gordon3988 I've only ever used it in 4K. Most footage is handheld, some on a mini tripod. I use Davinci Resolve to apply stabilisation in post and that does a solid job.

Thank you - that was a very helpful review. I take 90% of my photos on an iPhone, buit have always carried the tiny Sony DSC-WX-350 (x20 optical) on me for hiking and plane spotting (second hand eBay, 2014). It died today and I wanted a replacement - critical are size and zoom. There is little out there are budget price (as I only need it for those 5% of shots!) and all seem to be from 4 - 6 yrs ago. I will certainly see if this is still available, and any other recommendations for under £450 welcome! Thanks again for the review.

Hopefully you can find one used like I did, very reasonable camera for around £200-250. Not anything comparable still made these days it seems.

Is there a way to tune in the iso settings more. I don’t like how it jumps from 100,200,400,800 . I would like to be able to select 100,200,300,400,500,600,700

Check Sony website as it should have the manual for it and maybe you can tweak ISO stops.

I am thinking about getting into some light photography like street , casual, landscape photography and I will be in a budget. I like this camera and will probably be looking to purchase used but in decent to good shape camera. Can you recommend some legitimate pre-owned camera websites? Thanks for the info and I will like this video and subscribe to your channel. Thanks again. Keep rocking.

London Camera Exchange, MPB, WEX. Most big online camera retailers offer used cameras as they run a part-ex offer for people to trade in old gear towards new. Usual used websites are worth checking as well. These are reasonably rare, but you should find a couple for sale.
