    This by far is the best video I have watched on the HX99. I have been looking for an alternative to my Sony A6500 to carry around on travel. I really appreciate the review from a photographers point of view. The other reviews on this camera were geared more towards vlogging which I do not do. Although having a 1” sensor and lower aperture lens such as the RX100 VII, I think this camera will still allow you to create some good photos at a much less expensive price tag. Once again, outstanding video and it has helped me make my decision. All the best. Love the dog. !

      Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. Its very capable of getting some good quality images, especially in bright situations. Of course the RX100 VII is a league of its own but its at a much more expensive price tag.

      I couldn't agree more with what you say about this review. I have owned an HX-99 for almost a year and keep meaning to delve a bit deeper beyond the basics, I have learnt so much from this video, thank you.

    The thing is today many people just don't feel worth buying a compact camera because smartphone cameras have become so good! But for me I don't care how good smartphone cameras get, it's just so much cooler to shot on a REAL camera that has botons and moving parts!
    Your dog is very nice and I always enjoy watching your videos! I think you from Sydney, I watching from Germany so pretty far away haaha

    • @JohnSisonPhotography

      I do prefer that as well especially, if I want to get more somewhat 'serious' photos.
      Hehe thank you! And thats awesome. To be honest, I never thought my videos would be viewed to such an extent worldwide when I started.

    Two questions: When you are videoing with the HX99, if you zoom, will you hear the camera motor while you're zooming when you play it back? Also, how long can you record with it without it shutting down on its own? Can you record an entire 20 minute set without it shutting down? Thanks!! BB

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't recall hearing the zoom when filming and during playback. It will shut down at the 29min mark.

    Thanks for the review. I hope you can help with the problem I’m having with using the close-up/macro facility on the HX99. I just can’t get the camera to focus. For example. - spider on web... total blur and background wall circa 20’ away was clear. Any tips? Many thanks.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It might be best to have the camera set up as close to the subject as possible without zooming in because the minimum focusing distance is best when you are shooting at the widest setting.

    I bought a SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC-HX60V to be able to wear when I go to concerts (As they are easier to get in without guards seeing)
    This Sony DSC-HX99 seems to be the perfect next step to own, as I want to be able to film in 4k with a slightly more stable image.
    Too bad it does not support regular sd cards, because I prefer to carry around on 5-10 sd card when I travel.
    Do you know what the sound is like when recording events with a higher bass? ... concerts ..

    Great review John. I'm quite happy to say that I'm an owner of this camera myself (I was looking for a pocket-sized camera for times when I couldn't carry my bigger Sony a68 around with me). Its a great little camera, the colours are nice, the images show plenty of detail and the zoom is quite something when considering the camera size. My only real gripe isn't about the SD cards, its about the EVF. Firstly its quite awkward for me to actually use especially when you are used to using a larger eyepiece. Secondly, if you push the EVF back into the body of the camera, it'll turn off. Not great really but I can live with those minor issues. I certainly recommend that anyone using this camera wraps the wrist strap around their wrist because I've already almost dropped mine a couple of times!

    • @lesterduludis8892
      @lesterduludis8892 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my world, dear Gavin, this EVF is an obsolete thing. Then again, I'm a a Neolithic-35mm- era-dinosaur. Back then, the argument was between Range Finder vs DSLR: RF would let you focus by overlapping the image and it wasn't going to strain your eyes, thus using your glasses. It also let you a marge on the image to see any last second interruption. DSLR isolated the image and gave you a better color appreciation. Using your glasses while shooting was a bitch. That's why I love using the screen. Talking about bitch...There was NO auto focus... It came as rain on the crops when it was invented. I still don't get WHY so many guys are asking for manual focus today. What I think this new baby needs is a little notched up Image Stabilization while recording video. At least to the level of an action camera. This is ONLY a point of view. Not an argument, Gavin. Let's keep it friendly, honoring our host. Have a great day!

    • @gavinphillips3973
      @gavinphillips3973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your interesting reply to my post. I've used the HX99 quite a bit since I bought mine and its true I've only used the EVF a few times. It has, however, proven itself to be a useful feature in times where the light is really harsh. Normally I prefer the LCD screen it must be said. As regarding the image stabilisation, I personally don't have a problem with it but then again I've not used the video functionality yet either so perhaps that's why. I like to read about other people's point of views and I almost never see it as being an argument. One thing I love most about photography is how people see and use things in different ways. One thing I am considering as a purchase for the HX99 is a Sony VCT-SGR1 which doubles as a mini tripod but also as a more comfy hand-hold which is perhaps a good thing for situations where the camera is being used non-stop for any duration. Very nice.

    • @gavinphillips3973
      @gavinphillips3973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I almost forgot, about the manual focus lens point you raised. Well I must admit I have a few manual focus lenses and personally speaking, I just find them fun to use. Especially some of the Samyang/Rokinon designs are really sharp indeed. That plus the lack of AF and a low price means that they're attractive to many although they won't suit everyone. But I wouldn't be without my 16mm F2.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love how people can have a civil conversation without it turning into a huge argument haha. It's refreshing to see. I'm not a big fan of the viewfinder because it is a bit finicky. That is addressed on the RX100M6 where you only have to push the switch down to pop up the viewfinder but you obviously have to pay a lot more money for that but if you rarely use it, then its not really worth it. I tried the Sony VCT-SGR1. I like the grip that it is and its small and easy to fit in my bag when its not in use which is great. Contemplating getting one of those for my upcoming trip.

    • @gavinphillips3973
      @gavinphillips3973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnSisonPhotography Thank you for the response and I agree, its not too common these days in finding people who are willing to have a decent discussion or even a debate about things without resorting to name-calling. Its nice to find a few people out there who are still capable of discussing things in a friendly way. As for the Sony VCT-SGR1; if you do get one of these would it lead to another review video? Its on my purchase list but I may not get it for a while yet since my limited funds are needed elsewhere. I've always found your videos to be most informative and I'd certainly welcome your thoughts and opinions on the VCT-SGR1 and HX99 combo. Thanks again, best regards. Gavin

      @airzoomhuarache 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny that I am in the same situation right now as I am planning to buy this camera since long time!
      With Sony Cyber-shot HX99 you can't have the same quality as the RX100 VII or VI which are more expensive, brighter, with a better contrast, bigger sensor, better in the night etc etc.
      But at same time you can't have the same zoom as the HX99 with those 2 cameras.
      I think zoom is a priority to replace pics with smartphones nowadays even if you have a 200 megapixel smartphone you can't go so far as with zoom cameras.
      I am not so expert about cameras but I learn fast and I wish to be right.
      Regards!

    Thanks for the review! I actually went to a camera store today to find out about a camera that would be a step above my iPhone where I can zoom in better and still have great quality. I really liked this one, but it was almost too small for me to get a good comfortable grip. I also tried the olympus tough, (red colored) camera. This was more comfortable to hold but the zoom wasn't even close to as good as the sony. Do you have any recommendations of a camera that would give me the best of both worlds, in the same price range and compatible with an iPhone? I am just beginning to get into photography...mainly outdoors, beach, parks, wildlife, trails, etc....and the iPhone just can't get up close like I would like to...especially with birds, etc...Thanks!

  • @fingerhorn4
    @fingerhorn4 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a tiny camera that squeezes in a viewfinder and a flash. That's why it has a micro memory slot, to keep everything as small as possible. The view finder is a triumph of ergonomics and very cleverly made so it can be shut away flush with the body. Sony is brilliant at this kind of thing. But the question is - what are the advantages over a decent camera phone. Image wise very little unless you really want a strong zoom.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, its a great engineering feat to fit all that stuff in the camera. The RX100 is fairly similar in size so it would have been good if they could still fit in the SD card slot. I would still be happy to have a camera that was slightly bigger to fit that kind of card in the camera than have a micro sd card and a slightly smaller camera. The sensor is slightly larger and have generally better quality lenses than most smartphones. I will say the gap is beginning to be smaller between smartphones and cameras which is why they are dropping in sales these days.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography

      No external mic. Bluetooth yes but only to connect to your phone to help tag your photos on GPS. On memory cards, there doesn't seem to be a maximum but I would probably suggest a 64gb or 128gb card.

      The One plus has phone has a few advantages that its easier and photos may look better in certain situations but a dedicated point and shoot camera will give you more zoom and better features like faster autofocus as well.

    Can i record slow mortion. Or what is the difference of this my one flake one.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So that is the frame it. If you're filming in 100p or 120p (if you want 120p you will have to change your region from PAL to NTSC) you can slow it down in post like on final cut or premiere without the footage looking too choppy. Filming in 24p/25p is more of the cinematic standard.

    Hey John...I was going to send a posse looking for you and the doggy. I haven't seen you in a while, especially talking about this new camera, that came about the same time as the Panasonic Lumix ZS80, with the same technical amount of bells and whistles. I wish you could do a little comparison between these two. I still believe that SONY is unbeatable at video shooting, even with the basic P&S models. One caveat is that the screen is very easy to get scratched, even with the soft leather of the Italian cow camera case, as happened to my RX100-2.
    Love your reviews, John.
    Keep yourself nice and cool.
    Keep that doggy happy too.
