I bought the RX10IV for an Africa safari trip. It never left my hand and got almost every shot! Even some night safari shots. I was so impressed that I recently bought a used Sony ZV-1. It's a fantastic street camera for fast photos and video. The ZV-1 was about half the price of the RX100VII (both used). The ZV-1 has a shorter focal length (24-70mm) but a way faster lens. With intelligent zoom, its reach extends to 140mm. I'd love to get the RX100VII, but I'm happy with my ZV-1 for half the price!😊
I have the RX 10v4. I love it. My wife was recently going on a trip with some friends and didn’t feel like carrying her humongous Nikon and lenses. So she thought about getting one of the RX 100.V7. It was expensive and like my RX 100 there is a question about whether it will be supported. Or whether a new one is coming out fairly soon. Sony needs to pick a position. Either let us all know that these are not going to be upgraded(I really doubt the RX10 will be at this point.) but ultimately given the price of the RX 100 my wife made a completely different decision. For essentially the same amount of money, she upgraded her cell phone to the latest version. We traded in my old version, and I took over her slightly newer version when she got the new one. And that’s what she took on her trip, so like I said, Sony needs to let us know rather than leading us guessing so that we know whether to move on to something else, like a better cell phone, or even another brand. I for one not a seasoned or practiced enough photographer to invest in one of the Sony cameras required lenses.
I love my Rx100m7, and I get great photos just from the auto mode. I do feel the Rx line is being replaced by the zv line of vlogging cameras which dont interest me. With Sony borrowing tech from the alpha line for their phones, i thought they would have done the same with the Rx line, keeping it sat just behind the more pro range of kit. With improvements in focus speeds, image quality, eye tracking, and the more recent body tracking, the Rx line definitely needs an update to cater to amateur photographers like myself looking for that pro quality.
Thanks for another great video! I've had the original RX10 since 2015 and I also bought the RX100V shortly after it was released (I had an RX100III before that). Both have accompanied me to Ireland and Italy and they are both great cameras! I purchased an RX10II but returned it because the power zoom made too much noise when recording sound videos. We're headed to the UK this May and both my trusty RX10 and its little brother, the RX100V, will be with me. Great cameras but I would love to see updates to both, especially the RX10VII. An RX10VIII might well be worth upgrading from my RX10, especially if it had built-in ND filters, which both the RX10 and RX100V have.
Sounds like you love your RX cameras! That's great to hear. Yes it was disappointing when Sony dropped the ND filter from the camera but it was their decision I suppose to go for the longer zoom. Thanks for the comment
I have 2 RX100M7's and they are a joy to use in spite of any limitations. I avoid taking my bigger Sony camera's if I can get aways with the RX100 and Sony is making a mistake if they discontinue the RX line.
The RX100 VII is a stunning camera, I bought it second hand a few months ago, and I am blown away. The ZV1, which I also have for a few months more, has a bit better color processing out of the camera, the internal ND filter and a wider aperture, but otherwise the RX100 VII is better. Better mic, the viewfinder, better built. Better steady shot. Also, you should give a shot recording in SLog 2 with ITU 709 Matrix colors. It looks stunning! Mostly I record FHD 60 fps because 4k 30 fps with high shutter speeds looks a bit off... What would be possible with an RX 100 VIII with 2024 technology! 10 bit 4k 60fps, even better mics, it would be wonderful.
The choices we have. It's like a buffet with so many delicious dishes, which one do I pick? The single items that makes these wonderful is the zoom that is compact when the camera is off. I wish there was a commercial lens like that for interchangeable cameras. The one must have lens for cameras like the a6000 series and the small ZV cameras is the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 or the variable aperture Sony pancake PZ zoom lens, which might work in a pinch. It eventually comes down to convenience and not being noticed carrying a camera. The RX-100 vii/ZV-1 are about the size of a pack of cigs, and that is the one huge benefit. I would probably go for the new ZV-1 mk ii at this point. It's a little more up to date hardware and software wise. Great review. You point about the size and not being noticed is precious.
Based on video representations I find Canon's colors to be more true to nature. The Sony colors always seem to be darker. I really hope that Canon hasn't dumped the G7X Mark II; I would prefer it over the Mark III. Actually, I wish the G1X Mark III with it's larger sensor was still in production. However, I did appreciate the video. It was very informative. If I did wind up getting the Sony it would be the RX100 III for the larger aperture. 😊
I love that this camera is compact, light and has a 24-200 mm lens. It somewhat runs like a small camcorder. Too bad most cameras now don't have long zooms that are compact, they are all big heavy and expensive, not really usable of convenient travel.
Unless another manufacturer offers something as good, Sony is not in a hurry to launch a successor. It is amazing to see that after five years this is still the undisputed king of compact cameras. If there is ever a new version, I think weather-proof would make the feature set complete.
Well, this is not just "point n shoot camera" anymore when it really comes, it would be a beast stuff. But yeah, let's wait, I mean it's already 4-5yrs
I love that little monster fits in my back pocket and don’t have to carry my bigger pro body with a lens to match for simple shooting I have it attached to my Sony bluetooth mini tripod 📸
I just want RX100 sensor size combined with the HX99 zoom lens. (I've always been unimpressed by the RX100's zoom range coming from the HX series) - 4K video recording, with no stupid time limits (or overheating).. proper sdxc card support of any size.. better low light processing. Microphone input. How hard can it be..? My iPhone 14 pro max can record 4K60 HDR for hours without breaking a sweat.. but nothing _should_ beat a good zoom lens and large sensor. Surely there's enough space in the RX100 form factor in something dedicated to photography/video, to beat a phone that has so much less physical volume to work with? Would also be good to have the tripod mount further away from the battery door, to make using accessories not necessarily block quick battery swaps (I'd quite like to jig up an FDR-X1000V on the left side of the cam to cover a 4K wide angle shot while tight zooming) I like to record long form events, and I can't bring something larger like an RX10/HX400 into those places. I just need something pocket sized.. but with good zoom range and something worth the investment as a dedicated device over a phone. Currently I use HX99/RX100/iPhone.. and I only recently upgraded from oldskool HX30V (happy shooting 1080p60 for 6 hours with battery swaps) for the HX slot. Cheers
I dont think we see a mark 8. I think the 1" sensor belongs to the ZV line now. I think we get a new RX something though with apsc or full frame just due to how popular Fuji X100 series is.
I recently dragged my Canon R6Mii, RF24-200 2.8 and sigma 24-70 2.8 all around Italy and I’m exhausted. A number of days I just left it in the hotel room. And it was a pain having to deal with carry-on restrictions. I think is should have just used this So y with my DJI Pocket 3. Or maybe even just my iPhone 15 Pro Max and my DJI Pocket 3. I’m going to see what Apple has up its sleeve with the 16 pro, but I may soon be in the market for this Sony. Thanks for the info!
What Sony did was change course. They went all in on the vlogging craze when they introduced the ZV1. While I do think a direct successor to the RX VII will come, it’s not Sony’s focus now.
My biggest concern with the smaller device is the Lens Shutter on the outside of the lens when it opens up upon start and closing. These shutters tend to jam with dust and sand particles and makes the camera inoperative. I would either go with the Sony high end phone or the RX10-Mk4 in this case. Love the compactness of the RX100 series but they should have made it into a M4/3 sensor with a tiny lens.
Would love to see your review of the Canon G5XMKII and your views on which your prefer and why. I have the Canon being a proir Canon user and wanting the fastest lens for night photos, but am curious about what I might have missed out on by not going for the Sony.
There will never be a mark 8. Smartphones have killed the compact camera market. One feature which I think is unique to the RX100vii is you can shoot HD video and JPG stills at the same time. Great when travelling and can’t decide which to take of an event. As the video rolls, still take full resolution still images, although they then are in 16:9 format. I have used this facility a few times and it is great. I don’t know why none of the Alpha cameras have this ability?
The mk8 might well step on the toes of some of the entry level interchangeable lens Sony cameras. I suppose they wait until others in the range have moved far enough away
For me the Sony RX100-7 is worth the money. For those of you who has a modest budget, I would seriously consider the RX100-5a, is is nearly the same as the -7 except it has a 24-100mm zoom but at 24mm it has a F/2 aperture. I've had a Canon Powershot S100 and a Panasonic Lumix ZS50 past, and the Sony was way superior as you would expect because my RX100-7 was almost 3X cost of either camera. For those of you who are buying the RX100-7, I recommend the rubber hand gripe for ~$20 extra; for such an expnsive camera, it should be standard equipment.
Great review. Smartphones still can't replicate that "camera" look, like at 18:52. You would not be able to get a nice, sharp shot like that with any modern smartphone. Despite the lack of dynamic range in certain scenes, and not being able to keep up with smartphones in handheld low light situations due to their smart photography, it still produces very pleasant photos that look like they were taken with a professional camera. Unfortunately, I don't believe Sony will be making an RX100 VIII. It would great though, especially if they added connectivity and smart photography aspects to it (without overdoing it).
Hi there. Thanks so much for the comment. You certainly may be right about Sony not coming out with a replacement anytime soon but it seems that there is a lot of interest in point and shoots these days coming from the public so we'll see what happens! Thanks again.
Model 8? Please allow all adjustments on the LCD. Even the G7x does that. And keep working on menu simplification. Lets hope there's an 8, since the price of the 7 would decline quite a bit.
I want a very small camera with a viewfinder and a good zoom lens. I mostly do outdoor photography and want something small and light. I would have already bought the RX100 VII, but I hate to spend that kind of money on 2019 technology, even though the camera is still very good. But if they truly aren't going to update it, maybe I should take the risk. After all, the VII is more than good enough for what I do, and it is the smallest enthusiast camera out there. But come on Sony, how about an update for this $1300 camera?! Keep the form factor the same, but update the menus and the electronics. You have all the technology already available, how hard could it be? Then it could continue to dominate this market for another 5 years or more.
The only thing I would like to add to RX100m7 would be weather sealing. Even at the cost of slightly bigger body. That is to be able to carry it everywhere, all the time. I'm scared of drowning it in rain.
I'm just waiting for the ZV-E10 to have a view finder like the RX series. It'll be interesting to have interchangeable lens under a grand but still have novice level camera capabilities. Basically a more modern a6400. But that's just wishful thinking at this point 😂.
When I go on holiday, I take lots of photos. Yes, I have used my smartphone, but it kills the battery. The smartphone photography is limited. Especially, if someone like me is a heavy user. I don't want to lug a heavy camera with interchangeable lenses. I want a compact camera, where I change essential setting such as EV, ISO ..... I don't to waste time going into menu settings. Imagine it is New Years Eve ball, do I want to take an SLR camera with me? If I need to go to the bathroom, am I going to lug that with me and the camera bag into the toilet, because it is so expensive and I don't want it to be lost / stolen. I want a small camera, which I can put in my pocket. The 4K video - 5minute limitation sucks. It is such as expensive camera and this is big limitation. Imagine going on a mountain road with amazing scenery. Why do I need to buy a GoPro to take that footage?. Why can't the RX100 camera be used as a action / dash cam?. Sony also does 'funny' things to the colour, which is why I have not bought it. If means, I have to spend silly money on a subscription to software to adjust the colours, which should have been correct in the first place. Sony have release camera for vloggers, but not everyone is TH-cam. Fuji have launches the X100V, so there is demand for compact camera. Of course that is a fixed lens.
How would you compare this to the Tamron 28-200 (when used on a high res body like A1/A6700/etc) in terms of maximum resolution at the telephoto end? (utilizing clear image zoom, photo or video mode). I assume the RX100VII can't compete with this combo even in good light? Putting the Tamron 28-200 on an A6700/FX30 etc gives you 300mm equiv., and if you turn on active stab + CIZ, it becomes about 500mm equiv, so do you think this kind of combination can actually match even the RX10IV at full telephoto?
As good as Sony's clear image zoom is you are right, it will be very hard to compete against a full frame setup with a dedicated lens. I have the Tamron lens you are referring to is very sharp across the range. In the second part of your question regarding the RX10IV, since you have to go into CIZ on the 6700 /FX30 or whichever camera you use, they cannot match the RX10IV because the RX is using optical zoom which will always beat a clear image zoom. Plus even at 500mm in that set up, the RX has a higher zoom and is a much lighter more compact system as well!!
@@techtoremember8096 thanks for the reply! You make an interesting point, although I’ve noticed that sharper lenses on full frame setups often outperform technically superior optical zooms on other cameras… Even the P950, which I owned briefly. But perhaps the RX10IV is different because of its stellar lens and optimized sensor! I ordered an RX10IV and AX53 that I will be comparing to my various full frame/apsc/m43 setups
No, Sony focuses only on high-end E-mount, this is where the profit is, and this is why we won't get anything else. They have to think about the money.
I dream about this camera, but the cost is 1000 euros... I often take pictures of the night sky - did I understand correctly from the video that the previous versions are better for this? Which version would you recommend then? Thanks!
Hello there. The RX100 V A ( a more updated version of the V) lens is a bit faster at f 2.8 however the zoom only goes to 70mm equivalent as opposed to 200mm. So this may be a better option. The smaller sensor cameras like these however aren't the best for lowlight so if you could get a larger sensor like a micro 4/3 or Aps-c you will get better results due to the larger sensors light gathering..!
I do not think that RX100m8 will ever be brought to market. Despite the fact that it might be one of the very few point and shoot that still can sell very well and be profitable. Actually there still is a window of opportunity which would last for maybe 5 years until phone cameras become so much capable that they can come really close or even match RX series even for advanced users. I wish that Sony just leave Xperia phones which are not competitive anyways and use the resources to revice RX100 series. But it will probably never happen. My wish list of features, which I know unfortunately will not materialize, sorted by importance: 1) weathersealed!!! 2) zoom 20-120 or more (I would really love to see wider angle, like Sony is offering for example with its Sony FE 20-70 lens) 3) one more customizable dial (I would use it for for mostly exposure compensation) 4) better dynamic range or some extended dynamic range optimization (DRO) 5) better macro capabilities 6) in-camera RAW development or better connectivity with mobile phone and developing RAW in phone with a dedicated app 7) add a decent grip so that I do not need to buy add-on one (grip would allow for example additional space for the extra dial or bigger battery) 8) maybe a few little computational photography features from Xperia phones, they have the algorithms, so why not just plug it in a real camera such as RX100... e.g. night shots, decent artificial blur, better HDR, AI autofocus, etc. Having these features it would be ultimate camera for me. I can't imagine I would want anything else.
Thanks! There were some processor functions (slightly better AF etc) but the most important difference was the way the viewfinder is engaged. With the 7, you just hit the side button and it pops up and is ready to use. In prior models, you had to hit the side button and then pull out the actual little VF screen which was a pain!! This really speeds things up and I think was the biggest improvement. Lens is basically unchanged from the Mark 6 as well as the zoom the same.
There's an external mic socket which I find important as I take videos at gigs. Also you can adjust the mic level which I don't think you can do on the M6
Amazing that so many people are looking for an updated Sony RX100, and also an RX1 RII, and Sony is silent. All those dollars are going elsewhere. Previous Sony Management was quicker to respond to the marketplace IMHO.
Is it really that many? Or just the hardcore photo enthusiasts? I imagine the R&D to make another one perhaps doesn't add up for Sony or they would have put out another one by now.
I don't think there's gonna be a mark 8. Sony already released in 2020 the ZV1, in 2021 the ZVE10, in 2022 the ZV1F and in 2023 the ZV1M2. So Sony is heading towards these "vlogging" style cameras now, just like Canon. But hopefully they will not discontinue the RX lineup too soon, neither the GX series from Canon.
You may very well be right. But the only thing is sometimes what was out of style comes back into style so we can still hope Sony will change their mind one day!
@@chamade166 Because it is really inconvenient to tear down your setup just to change the memory card or battery. One should be able to mount the camera and access the battery and memory card without having to unmount the camera.
Agreed. The answer is that phone pictures fall apart on zoom and computational photography wins for ease of final product for a quick shot. The RX100 strengths are optics and a full suite of menu options specific to camera work. Phone wins on stability.

That would be very helpful yes
Your videos are always so thorough and entertaining. Thanks for the review.
Hey thanks so much. I really appreciate it!!
if they wack a global shutter into this series.. its gonna be a bomb
I'm just waiting for the ZV-E10 to have a view finder like the RX series. It'll be interesting to have interchangeable lens under a grand but still have novice level camera capabilities. Basically a more modern a6400. But that's just wishful thinking at this point 😂.
The Point of the Rx100 7 is the 24-200 zoom and stealth pocketability. Any interchangeable lens camera won’t fit in a pocket.
Thanks for this review - I would LOVE your observations in an A to B comparison with the Canon G5 X Mk II !
Hi there! I have been getting requests on this, so yes, that will be in the works. Stay tuned!
FYI I have a G5X but the extra focal length appeals to me. So I'm wondering about comparative high ISO and eye tracking performance. ✌️
Yes, that will all be examined!
I’m waiting
Of course that is a fixed lens.
thanks for the video
Great video, thank you
Much appreciated!
How about a comparison between RX100VA and RX100VII.
I had thought about that! Possibly. Thanks for the suggestion
I ordered an RX10IV and AX53 that I will be comparing to my various full frame/apsc/m43 setups
i hope they will as my m7 ive had since oct2019 is begging to be retired :P
as much of a classic the m7 is, the m6 has a larger buffer, so in theory is better if you need that buffer extension.
No, Sony focuses only on high-end E-mount, this is where the profit is, and this is why we won't get anything else. They have to think about the money.
lol, your presentation is really funny. keep it up
Thanks so much!
How good is the still image stabilization on the RX100 vii
Good enough where low light photos are not blurry
@@techtoremember8096 thank you ❤️
I do not think that RX100m8 will ever be brought to market.
My wish list of features, which I know unfortunately will not materialize, sorted by importance:
1) weathersealed!!!
2) zoom 20-120 or more (I would really love to see wider angle, like Sony is offering for example with its Sony FE 20-70 lens)
3) one more customizable dial (I would use it for for mostly exposure compensation)
4) better dynamic range or some extended dynamic range optimization (DRO)
5) better macro capabilities
6) in-camera RAW development or better connectivity with mobile phone and developing RAW in phone with a dedicated app
7) add a decent grip so that I do not need to buy add-on one (grip would allow for example additional space for the extra dial or bigger battery)
8) maybe a few little computational photography features from Xperia phones, they have the algorithms, so why not just plug it in a real camera such as RX100... e.g. night shots, decent artificial blur, better HDR, AI autofocus, etc.
Having these features it would be ultimate camera for me. I can't imagine I would want anything else.
Great video. what is the difference between the 6 and the 7?
Lens is basically unchanged from the Mark 6 as well as the zoom the same.
thank you @@techtoremember8096
There's an external mic socket which I find important as I take videos at gigs. Also you can adjust the mic level which I don't think you can do on the M6
Was looking at the a6700 with sigma 18-50 but saw the vii at £900 (with cash back). Did I make the right decision? My bank manager said bueno
I say "bueno" too, vii is a great photography camera.
Amazing that so many people are looking for an updated Sony RX100, and also an RX1 RII, and Sony is silent. All those dollars are going elsewhere. Previous Sony Management was quicker to respond to the marketplace IMHO.
Very true ‘
Is it really that many? Or just the hardcore photo enthusiasts? I imagine the R&D to make another one perhaps doesn't add up for Sony or they would have put out another one by now.
I am so tempted to buy this camera and sell off all my full frame gear and lenses.
worth it
I don't think there's gonna be a mark 8.
I don’t believe there will ever be an 8. I think this is the end of the RX100 line.
The Beatles will reform and do a world tour before we see an RX 100viii.
Well I guess we should just “let it be”
All RX100 cameras have the same fundamental flaw. If the camera is on a tripod, you can't change the battery, or the memory card.
Is that all?
Why does that matter?
@@chamade166 Because it is really inconvenient to tear down your setup just to change the memory card or battery. One should be able to mount the camera and access the battery and memory card without having to unmount the camera.
@@douglaspeale9727 seems unrealistic on a small camera like that
Hey there! love the videos...do you have a business email by any chance? I just have an in depth question I wanted to run by you!
im have mark 4 I'll just wait for the mark 8 xd
The real point is always another: how could it compare with a 2024 cameraphone...
Agreed. The answer is that phone pictures fall apart on zoom and computational photography wins for ease of final product for a quick shot. The RX100 strengths are optics and a full suite of menu options specific to camera work. Phone wins on stability.
The difference in sharpness is huge! In other reviews rx100m7 is very sharp! Weird!
That surprised me too
Your humour cracked me up 😂
Haha. Thank you. I felt I had to lighten the mood!
Just buy a Smartphone with a good camera... because i think the only upgrade will be an USB-C Port
There will not be a mark 8
Dvd burner is not there we can wait for mark 8 😂
Haha definitely !
Spielzeug ! Ich bleibe bei meiner A7R5
This camera appeals to a different market
RX100 and RX10 line is dead. Lol
Dead but not forgotten !
@@techtoremember8096 very true hehe
Panasonic keeps selling their camera models from 2015 even today.
You can’t buy the 7 it’s sold out everywhere
Not in the UK it's not.
Here in Australia, it's marked as awaiting stock, but if you're patient, it should come. My order took about 7 weeks to arrive.
Is vulgarity supposed to be funny?
Um, just watched his video..Informative, lots of into, nothing vulgar.. Why do people post unintelligent comments? I'll never know.
Thanks buddy some people have no life and writing a comment like that makes them feel important lol
