Great review as always! If I can make a small recommendation when it comes to the lighting in your video. I really like how your studio footage looks without the purple background color. When you turned it off at around 7:45 to me that was a better looking footage. Good luck!

I was looking for a new vlogging camera on B&H, came across the HX99, and decided "Hmm, that seems like a good deal. Let me check TH-cam to make sure this is what I need." And lo and behold, what should appear first but your review?
I legitimately said out loud "Yes! The Everyday Dad made a video on it!" Your videos always help me with deciding what cameras I need. I ended up getting a Lumix G85 based on your recommendations, and I absolutely love it. I'm most likely going to save up some money to buy this too. Thanks, man!

Think this would make a good down-shot camera for unboxings? I'm thinking of building a new rig and I need a camera to mount. Mounting my FDR-AX53 won't be possible, because of weight. The flip screen is most intriguing so I can see the down shot, without needing a separate monitor.

I wouldn’t use this for primarily indoor videos. I’d get a used rx100v or you could get a brand new a5100 for less then this camera right now with the holiday deals.
This will have a LOT of noise indoors and I would only really recommend it for majority outdoor use.

I love the comparison! Really useful for small TH-camrs to see how a cheaper camera performs to a 2000+ $ setup. Probably performs the same as the DJI Osmo Pocket would indoors? No TH-camr made a DJI Osmo Pocket indoors / studio setup test yet.

For people who really care about quality in stills in a compact I think the RX is still the way to go, especially since the 1/2.3 sensor size in the HX really doesn’t make it much better than modern smartphones. That said, the zoom on the HX is crazy and the feature set Sony crammed into this thing is fantastic. For those who want a small and light travel camera that can zoom reliably the HX is amazing for its price!

Hey, im not sure if you´re still active here. But I want to buy a point and shoot for concerts. My first thought would be the RX100 but I tested this one (HX99) in the electronic shop and I think, good zoom would be important? because I cant stay in line for every concert at 8 am. What would you recommend - because i need good quality and good zoom. Also i Have an Iphone 15 Pro - so the Fokus would be on Photos.

The only thing missing from this camera review is the obvious - no mention at all of still pictures taken from the CAMERA. Its not a video camcorder, its a camera and you failed to mention or show any still pictures taken with this CAMERA. No shots of it in bright sun, or low light, no print reproduction - nothing.

Thanks for the real world review. After four years of using the HX80, which is the cheap little brother to the HX99 I decided to spring for the HX99. It's been out of stock EVERYWHERE for months, but Amazon finally got new ones in stock, sort of.... They filled my order but won't ship the HX99 until mid-October. Oh well, I can wait a bit longer. 🙃

  • @g0mhc
    @g0mhc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I purchased this camera as soon as it was released, couldn't wait. It had everything I wanted in a compact camera plus it captured RAW images, yippeeeee?
Well NO. OK it shoots RAW but no support in Lightroom or Photoshop, yet, but worst of all was the image quality. It wan't just poor it was abysmal.
Even at 100iso there was noise visible unless you were in very bright sunlight.
I compared the HX99 with my old SX260HS and the 260 came out tops for image quality EVERY TIME.
After five days trying and trying hoping it was me at fault I sent it back for a refund.
If you value image quality don't waste your money on this camera.

By B camera has been DSC-WX500. It's an older cousin, with several of the same features. These Sony point and shoot cameras are great back ups as well as handy B roll cameras. BTW: I bought a 5 year service contract and have yet to use it, and my camera has been in service over 3 years. Only complaint about these is that the screen will scratch over the years because it is flush with the back.

This one was in my radar up until today when I got a great deal on the rx100 v. I have the new Canon SX740 which is very similar to this so I have the 4k super zoom travel camera covered. That Canon SX740 is a bit of a sleeper. May be one of the best values around. Seems this may be a close second or maybe a bit better. I was impressed with the Canon on a recent trip to Disney.

rx100 mk3 and above beats the crap out of ten h99 any time.. on all levels (even pricewise, 'cuz in 2021 ppl sell their v. good cond used rx100 mk4,5 for mere $20-50 more than h99...) the only thing i hate about these little sonies (i'm using my 3rd rx100, i had mk1, mk3, m5 now, i walk around w/ rx100 on my belt 365 days a year) - somehow they are all fragile in my hands (or sony folks are too good in programmed obsolescence) - all my rx100 ended up having some pb. now mk5 is driving me nuts 'cuz its lens curtains get stuck all the time on start up, i have to flip 'em with finger et to fix that i'd need to change the whole lens block (at min ~100€ total in parts & work). and as the parts on these cam look very much the same, i'd suspect h99 be same crappy in sturdiness after intensive use

The hx99 and wx800 are wayyyyt more value than the rx100 cos their video is great and can come close while costing way less

Spend 50 bucks more and get the Canon G7x Mark II. What do you think? Comparison video? The canon has a 1 inch sensor for better image quality and low light and the image stabilization blows the Sony RX line away. Only downside is no 4K. Thoughts?

It depends on what you need, if you need the 4K then it would do as well. But I’m sure the g7 mark ii has a decent image (I’ve never used one personally)

These days there are 40$ cameras doing 4k, but just like with megapixels before, what matters is how those pixels look like. Here the colors and contrast are quite bad e.g. after 4:30.

1/4 the sensor size of RX100 , 18.2 megapixels on a 1/2.3" sensor, kinda like a good phonecam . I'm not interested. The thing going for it is if u like to shoot long zoom.
