  • This is a question that has been haunting me for an age now, what with all these new-fangled Teslas and other self-driving vehicles proposed in the not too distant future. Would their high-tech systems be able to spot me pootling along minding my own business in my Velomobile? Tune in to this video for an answer.

    Great! I was wondering this myself and I was supposed to do a similar test, but I just don't know anyon who owns a Tesla.

    If you want a ultraexpensive megaspymachine, buy the Tesla.
    If you want an analog, nonspying, health induceing vehicle, bua a velomobile!

    It's good that they see them in front but would to be good to also know a) whether they pick up a velomobile coming along the side e.g. down a cycle lane on the inside and what they will make of a pedestarian going 40mph!

    I tried this with my QV and a friend's Model 3 a couple of months ago. We got the same result. Mostly the Model 3 displayed the QV as a person, sometimes as a bike.

      That’s seems like a reasonable thing to display… suggests that it will avoid it.

    Hey this is interesting :) A friends Model S saw my QV as a car (admittedly, on a road where normal bicycles are not allowed).

    This is s great example of an edge case don't you think? An unusual object that must be understood. More velomobiles need to appear in in front of Beta testers I guess. I live in a bubble in Japan where Teslas are slightly more common than Unicorns and velomobiles slightly less common than Unicorns. So this video really rubs it in how different it is for you folks.

    It's an interesting question. Last year I had an accident with a Mercedes that pulled out of a side road into my path. "It wasn't my fault", the driver said, "my car let me pull out"!

    John..can you take the front passenger seat out…as I did in my Berlingo.?
    It should then fit perfectly. Beware of air bag and any in seat heating connectors ( if the Tesla is so blessed

    I bet it fits in a vw id4... I've had one of those 2m aluminium heaters in it and I bet it could take that velomobile

    Good question, don’t they have cameras all around the car? I worried trucks and tunnels

    That has to be the most dangerous thing, the wild looking velomobile looks great but its so low that drivers cannot see you. No way would I get in that on the road

    My Volkswagen Golf 7 registers every cyclist as a vehicle and can keep distance of them automatically. I think it would do the same with a velomobile

    My "velomobile" has two wheels as it is a streamlined recumbent (Lightning Cycle Dynamics F-40) that I rode solo across the USA in 2000. Tesla has as much trouble identifying what a velomobile is as a human driver does. I found that to be an advantage as it enhanced my safety. Most drivers would give me a wide berth for that reason. In my case I found making the trip that way was much easier than doing it with a group ride. I was too fast for that sort of touring.

    Great video but I worry such a low profile makes it hard for other vehicles to see you. Any way to add an elevated flag or place some artificial loud moter noise on to help with alerting others?
    With that aside have fun and keep up the good work.

      this is discussed since the invention of the things. the gist is you don't really ride it like you would a normal bicycle weaving in and out of traffic, rather you stay in places where you would be visible, always behave like you are invisible, and a surplus speed lets you flow with traffic perhaps a little bit easier than you would with a normal bicycle. always-on lights would be a good idea though

    • @tobiasb8086
      @tobiasb8086 ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone who has cycled thousands of kilometers with a velomobile, I can assure you that they are very visible. I don' t know for sure why that is, but I assume that the bright colours and the fact that a velomobile is no smaller than the bonnet of a car play a role.

    I'm surprised that bike is allowed on the streets. It's very low profile seems extremely dangerous to ride along cars

    • @4nz-nl
      @4nz-nl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course it is. It's a bike. I usually ride between the cars as if I'm one of them, which makes it easier to be visible (but you're constantly checking the mirrors to see if the driver behind you is not checking his phone more than the road). Also: Car drivers need to watch for stuff they don't expect, too. Would save all other traffic (including other car drivers) from a lot of unnecessary accidents.

    • @tobiasb8086
      @tobiasb8086 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience (thousands of kilometers in a velomobile) they are more visible than normal bicycles. I guess the bright colours play a role. Also, a velomobile is bigger than a fridge lying on the road. And if someone can't spot a fridge lying on the road, it is safe to say that they should not be allowed to drive.
