Coming back to this two years later and I find it difficult to see what is better in space, functionality, range and value for money even now. The closer we get to an ev the closer we get to getting an eNiro. We have looked at many options: ID.3 controls and centre screen we don't like, Enyak is too big for us, MG is excellent but not quite there, Kona is fiddly with the drive buttons and the boot is a bit small. Other competitors don't have the range or cost too much. Difficult to see how the eNiro is not the best choice out there for general use.
Excellent comprehensive review (I never would have thought to cover the windshield washers). I don't understand why you don't have way more subscribers. Keep up your great videos.
Hope you do another one when the facelift eNiro arrives in the UK as it will be before Australia and give me a good idea whether it will be an affordable replacement for my Ioniq 28 when it comes off lease in 2yrs.
One comment was about a lack of availability - now in late May 2020, it’s much improved I heard a couple of months said. Wife’s fossil Clio mk IV took that, and it was ‘immediate availability’ in 2015. Really good review, parenthood suits you. Well you know, as much as putting your head in the mouth of a lion suits anyone, speaking from experience.
@@Jamesandkate The vehicle is truly stunning and will fit my needs perfectly. I've never driven elecric before and instantly loved it (and its credentials). Tech on new EVs is obviously changing very quickly this year particularly but also in the next few as they become more accepted. Against my instinct I'll probably lease withing a few months. Much as I could use a local runabout I also do distance driving at times. Mr Porterfield and yourselves have finally awakened my conscience and I thank you genuinely for that.
For the record. Kia didn't underestimate the mileage or the 0-60mph times. They took a play from Tesla's playbook by under quoting so people customers will be pleasantly surprised instead of disappointment cause they never met the estimated quote. Matter of fact the only company that is paying attention to Tesla is Kia. The rest of the automakers are feeling some type of way in my opinion.
From my POV as an engineer, it's not necessarily that its them hiding anything as far as batteries go, but it's that we as users don't perceive the differences between energy density/dissipation of a battery versus a petrol engine. On top of that, the general energy density even on one of these is less than the equivalent energy density of the gasser, so everything you do that reduces the efficiency feels worse due to the proportions of overall energy versus expended energy.

I am nearly 3 months into e-Niro ownership here in France and we are loving the car. We have done a few long trips in it which I have recorded on Kia e-Niro Diaries here on TH-cam.

I ordered my e-Niro last April and am picking it up on Monday (16/3/20). I am pleased as I was expecting to wait until June. Their problem is that they have two models and their sister company Hyundai also use the same battery pack for the Kona and so do Nissan in the Leaf. This was the "First Edition" and they have now upgraded it to the model "4".
Purely based on your review. I am going to buy the Kia E Niro in 2021. Its one of the best and honest reviews out there. If I were you two get rid of that tesla and buy 2 kia E niros. Especially since somebody likes it dooooo much🤗👍
We love ours. Just did a week in Ireland and commuted 150 miles a day to and from work on the public network out there. All perfectly doable including a weeks luggage for the 3 of us and our dog who takes up the entire boot.
Great review, the first I’ve seen with a mention of long motorway miles which don’t effect the range. My commute is 180 miles a day with 150 miles on the motorway. Thanks for putting my mind to rest, my next car I believe.
Nice video. Thumbs up back.👍 The E-Niro's good points shine through. The only one truly bad point about it isn't its fault. Availability. Undoubtedly, it will be bettered at some point, but this is a great design here and now, going to waste. In future years, people will look back on the E-Niro and ask why more weren't made when needed. And I think that is just as much to do with corporate strategy as the announced shortage of battery materials.
Just evs have one coming in, so if you’re not bothered about it being brand new no problem. That’s what I did with my Kona, I cancelled my new car order as delivery kept going back, so bought a second hand Kona from just evs

Glad you got to test the eNero. We ordered ours back in February, expected delivery in Sept/Oct 2019. Yes, we could get a Leaf probably in weeks, but for us the Nero is a better fit. On buttons: LOVE THEM. Why: YOU try using a touch screen while wearing winter gloves! On our old Prius all the aircon/heating controls were on the infotainment screen. Had to take off gloves to use them :-(. On the present 2012 PHEV Prius they are buttons! You get to keep nice warm hands :-).
Thanks for the review. As a Kona owner, the niro is a great car. For next year the phone app is apparently incoming, as ever watch this space. I bought my car off the back of Bjorns video, without seeing the car, and doing it online, but it has met every need i have after 20000 miles in 7 months.... I think part of the delays overall with batteries is that everyone is waiting for the next big breakthrough, so no one wants to invest in tooling that may then be obsolete in 6 months
I have both Kona and e niro. I Iove both but finding the Niro driver seat back very hard and not as comfortable as my Kona. The Niro seems to keep charge rate higher to 79 percent too.
@@be236 very close. It's about space v led headlights and light grey interior options. Also centre console of Niro way way better design in my view. Kona Premium SE really trumps the Niro on spec...but both are marmite cars.
@@neilbrandon Here in "the states," Kona Electric is rated at 415km, while Niro EV is rated at 383 km... so Kona is about 30km more range, but seems European/WLTP specs shows Niro EV has slightly more range.. strange..
@@be236 the actual milage will depend on temperature, weather, driving style. I am finding my Niro about same as Kona if not better...early days though. If you are worried about small difference I would be more concerned about the difference between summer and winter, highway and city.
James, you mentioned a tweet: "I'll love all EVs when I can go and buy one on a Saturday afternoon from a dealer." And there you have it! I reserved my Tesla Model 3 way back in June 2016. Three years ago. Tesla finally sent me an email to order the car last month (May 2019). Finally. So I did ... and there's still no anticipated delivery date. Presently, for most of us, EVs are a myth. I have the money. And the desire. But can't get the car!
Love mine. Live in the Netherlands and have it since February as successor to my Ioniq Electric. It shares a lot, but is so much better in every respect (only but absolute efficiency). It is a pity Kia is not producing enough to keep up with demand. And the demand is probably so high because it fits the bill for many people who are not looking for an EV that looks from outer space, but just want a normal family car. In my opinion there is one word to describe the e-Niro: solid (road holding, range, design, practicality, performance, etc.; it's not groundbreaking, but the overall package is so good) Btw: in the Netherlands the top spec version has even ventilated seats in front and full LED headlights.
Hey for years I’ve been saving for a Tesla model Y it’s my absolute dream. However my old gas car gave in last week and I have since long promised myself I’d never by a gascar again.. I walked in to a Kia dealership and test drove the 21 model Kia niro seems like they listend to you.. much improved charging 11kw onboard and Uvo app connect as standard. Since we absolutely need a car right now I opted for a three year lease. Deliverytime is three weeks and they even offered us a loaner car until it arrives...price was also really good fully even cheaper than most gas cars in it’s class.... so we are quite happy and excited eventough we put our Tesla model Y for another three years:)”
These are amazing cars, it's a great choice. We're currently driving the 38kWh Ioniq which does have a smaller battery, but it's so efficient. Enjoy your new car 👍
Great review as usual. Almost like a concept car, I can't get excited about a vehicle that is not readily available. But that is at bit sour grapes as I have been so obsessed with the model 3 to have not put myself in line to get on the list to have had one.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! It’s not in my mind the most beautiful car, but no other car can match it at the price point. I’ve the Kona Electric and it brilliant but not quite big enough, that why we’ve ordered the Kia E Niro 4+. I did consider the Tesla but fit and finish seems to be a problem plus as you say it doesn’t have the range of the Niro, unless one opps. for the much more expensive version. Having seen your recent video and how unhappy you are with the model 3s fit and finish I think I’ve made, for me at least, the right decision. Tesla’s charging points are miles away from me in the SE of 🇬🇧 so that wasn’t part of the equation. The Kia has such a good range, close to 300miles that 99% of the time I would home charge. I believe Tesla haven’t either android auto or Apple CarPlay.

There are now a number of excellent next gen EVs either released now or on the near horizon but still just out of reach for most for the next 12 months or so which is a shame. Button counting on my own steering wheel, my 2011 VW Touran has 13 buttons including the horn!! You get used to it over time!! The ENiro is on my wish list, supply here in France less of a problem compared to UK. But like James there a number of other cars due out in the next 12 months that are potentially as attractive as the e-Niro. Thanks for a great review

I do like your presentation and the Kia too. The lack of towing capacity is holding me back from ordering one. The waiting period is less of a problem, relatively. I had to wait 6 months for my brand new VW T6 to be delivered, an ordinary ICE transport.
Thanks for the review it’s the most informative I’ve seen and I’ve seen at least 6. Ordered in Feb so hoping for early next year. The option I’d like most is a HEPA filter, it’s particularly annoying breathing in others’ pollution when in an electric car (I appreciate I give off tyre and brake dust but less of the latter I hope with regen.)
So, I was thinking of getting the Tesla model 3 until I watched this!! But now knowing there is such a long waiting list I will go back to consider the Tesla, not sure what else would give me the range I need at sensible money. Also, thanks for introducing me to Awolnation 👍🏻
We have finally decided. I'm talking to Kia tomorrow. A big standard long range eNiro 2 will suit our needs perfectly. I will also add: we do not have anywhere to charge at home. We have a couple of friends who are prepared to let us use their driveways from time to time but even with the current cost of electricity at fast and rapid chargers I calculate that it will still cost less to run than an ICE and in real terms electricity prices will drop again in 12 to 18 months. Looking forward to our summer holidays in Orkney ...
Excellent review very informative I would imagine all car companies will be seeking you guys out to do a review on there cars. Kia will get the delivery times sorted as this is going to be a massive change from gas and diesel.
Great review, thank you. My parents are ready to upgrade to a long range EV. They drive 280 miles each way several times a year, the only motorway stop being Membury Services. Unfortunately, because of the unreliability of the Ecotricity CCS chargers, I steered my dad away from Kia, or any other CCS car really. Until there is redundancy at most of the services, e.g. Ionity network, with several units available in case one has failed or is in use, I don't want them to be stuck or waste time worrying about where to divert for a charge. Hopefully in 2020, the Model 3 will have become more affordable (the Supercharger network looks great) because as my dad gets older he will need a car that does more and more of the driving, to reduce accidents and relieve tiredness.
I wouldn't let motorway charging put them off. I'm always dubious about charging at motorway services and surprised when it works (which, to be fair is most of the time). In fact I had a coffee with James after he helped me out with an ecotricity charging issue at LFE. So I now splash out on Polar Plus, tap the card instead of faffing with the app and, on the one occasion there was an issue with my account, customer services were brilliant. They started the charge remotely for me and then went off to sort out the issue. There are a number of other, reliable options, just off the motorways, often with better/nicer facilities. That said, there should be much better, more numerous and reliable options at the MSAs. Perhaps competition would help.
I think the problem about “charging” to which you refer is actually the problem that the “charging app” isn’t available in the UK., but is available in other parts of the world, James mentioned that it’s available in the US.
The last time I checked it was like a 2 year wait for a Kona or Niro here in Norway - if I could have walked into a dealer and driven away in one I probably would have replaced our aging ICE Golf by now. As it is, we have a reservation for an ID.3 and fingers crossed that will have less buttons but a similar efficiency to the Niro.

Got one on order should be here may June next year. We have the Niro Hybrid at the moment. I was thinking of the PHEV but with that range you don’t need it. And the cost was to close. I agree with your thoughts on the styling but it is really practical and it’s marketed as a crossover ( estate ) great review.
Did you not mention the 7 year warranty? I have had two leafs and after the three year warranty expired I was pay £300 per year for extended warranty I would keep the Kia for a full 7 years 😀
Get mine mid february and here in France we have full led lights but no heat pump. Mine is dark blue and this color fit perfectly with the blue stripes. The problem is about keeping my driving lisence cause it dosen’t look like a sport car but it is fast.

Your android auto issues may be your phone not the software. I had issues when I switched to a leaf but it's only on one phone. Changed handset an it was fine. Never had any glitches or problems with voice commands. The leaf just used to loose connection but only on one particular handset
domhnall dods I thought the same. However, tried 5 (!) android phones and 'auto' had the same issues unfortunately. I have an iphone too and that's faultless. Having said all that, android now have the better operating system and when Google sort 'auto' out it will be fab'. The big plus for 'car play' though is the way it puts everything relevant from the phone on the screen and lets you choose what you want...on the screen.
@@mrquordlepleen well I've been using android auto for 4 years now and have never seen these issues at all. 4 different vehicles plus rental cars and it's been flawless.
Great review - would I have one ? No, not now the new Soul is available which is much better sized to a retired couple and has usable van like properties ! Kia (and Hyundai) are on a roll that is unfortunately being slowed by battery availability but that will change in the next 2-3 years. Others better be planning to catch up and soon.
Agreed about the buttons. I sat in one and was a bit overwhelmed. The Tesla is obviously the opposite but I appreciate the simplicity. Horses for courses.

I wanted to comment on the car and review, Phil, not make personal observations about the reviewers and their life choices! I have not had any children myself, but my current EV can carry up to four adults and I may go for an e-Niro which will carry five. My choices are driven by the car, the ability to carry children being a nice by-product.
Just had a test drive in two of these Kia e Nero and couldn’t believe how noisy they both were, road and wind noise and even when stopped the motor noise, I couldn’t live with it.
Thanks James and Kate. You hit the nail on the head when talking about availability. It will not be long, however, before Kia/Hyundai and others will have to pull their socks up and take EV sales much more seriously. EV's will have to become their main business, otherwise they will face bankruptcy. From this superb review, we like the car - apart from that dreadful grille blanking plate, which also looks like a bug trap and a pain to keep clean. The range is more than adequate; at least 60 miles greater than our 'economical' fossil can manage, which is a huge plus point. So range anxiety is becoming history right now. The price is also owing within peoples' spending limits, and the figure you mentioned is probably negotiable. Was that without any subsidies? And Florence is growing up quickly; she's a toddler already. Enjoy it!
I know I’m a bit late with this comment but you mentioned that you get between four and 5 mi./kWh going 70 miles an hour on the highway that is just not true you get between three and four at 70 miles an hour. I’ve put over 20 K miles on mine I get between four and five in the city in about 3.5 on the freeways in California doing 70 to 75,Thank you for your great reviews big thumbs up helped me in my purchase and I am very happy with it
I just bought a hybrid Niro. Was lucky to get the colour I wanted as they've had a rush on them, all because people have seen the eNiro in videos like this and want to get one. However, when they've found out about the waiting time, they've just bought the hybrid version as a "temporary" stepping stone and will buy a full EV next time.
In this edit Kate mentions James saying something about charging.. did I miss that? What is off putting about the charging on the Nero? Other than that a great very useful report. Hope to see you both at Fully Charged live :)
E-Niro rocks the EV world. A watershed opportunity. Kia will sort out production - eventually. Buttons are more reliable and easier to use. No fumbling through menus and frozen screens. Model 3 braking is a classic example of buggy software. I believe the dimples on the front grill may be for aerodynamics, like a golf ball.
Agree totally about the "Golf Ball" comparison. What other cars in the Hyundai/Kia stable use such similar front end treatments? The first time I saw a Kona EV, the golf ball feature came to mind. Perhaps this is the reason so many reviewers are stunned by the real world efficiency of these 2 compact electric CUV's. Would be interesting to see what might happen with an already aerodynamic Tesla Model 3 were such a design element incorporated into the front end.
According to abetterjourneyplanner, one of these can make my annual trip across Europe in just a bit longer time then our diesel. And that's great. Not sure though, where would I find second driver for this trip. If I could by one of these.
jur4x, if this can almost keep up with a diesel, the Model 3 long range must be just about on par. That’s the only car that can keep up with the long trips I use to make 1400 miles each way, solo on several occasions. If you are doing 2 driver trips, I think nothing can beat a diesel because you have so many choices on where to refuel and I’m guessing much more range than any EV on the market. Actually the only thing that makes an EV even possible for me is I am too old to drive that hard and no longer need to. I can drive an hour and charge for 2 hours if needed. LOL
I did like the car, especially the driving position when I sat in it at the Junction event. And the first part of your video re-inforced me thinking maybe we will have a look at the abysmal used market for it in 2 years. But then you said no app support, and it instantly put me off. Not just for heating but being able to check the charge level, especially with all the weird problems with EH chargers etc nowadays, I got used to it with the Leaf (no matter how unreliable the app is) and wouldn’t want to go back. Excellent range though, very surprising. Still sad it’s impossible to get one
What was the negative about charging? Think you edited that chat out I’m thinking as Tesla drivers you probably found 50kw charging a wee bit too slow when doing very long journeys ?
When you compare tesla 8x or 12x superchargers at the services that probably all work vs 1 Ecotricity CCS which may or may not? At least with that range finding a genie/instavolt/polar shouldn't be too much of an issue.
You should lower the rear headrests as far as they will go when there is nobody in the rear seats as they restrict rearward vision when using the rearview mirror.
Nice review. Personally I like the back of the car most, since there are none like it. The Niro has many pro´s, here in Denmark it comes with led headlamps, ventilated seats, and memory on driver seats, with easy acces. Just like the Model 3. But I would wait for the facelifted model, that should arrive next year. The infotainment is way better, with much bigger screen and faster response time. It should have app support at that time too. Niro is in same price range to the Model 3, and while the Model 3 has some really nice features, the Niro has even more. But not the same perfomance and handling of course. Anyway, great video, like that both of you make your points on the car :D

I'd fully expect JBL to beat Bose :p The Leaf has great bass response but is lacking in clarity. I wish they were swapped with the looks of the Kona front, Kia back with the functionality/boot size of the Niro The lack of app heating etc puts me off a tad

Thanks, OK an old video, and for the first edition, but still relevant. Yes the range is better than expected, I nearly bought an M3 but my better half liked buttons, and it is bigger inside than a model 3. I have a 4 which has the bigger display, I am very pleased with it, I have previously had Range Rovers and Jags, but the Kia is better.
WOT....NO APP !😱 I considered a Niro (hybrid) which I considered to be the best spec'd / value for money hybrid...however I eventually got a BMW i3 Rex. The Niro is unremarkable and uninspiring to look at, I agree with you about the grille, if it isn't required then why is it there? The front of the car would look far more modern without it and also have at least a modecom of individuality. I do like the level of spec and I am a fan of bringing back the knobs! The interior is very well screwed together with a quality-ish feel, apart from the fake leather, but it is such a black, bland, dreary place to be. Reviews of the US version show an ivory interior which really enhances the look and internal ambiance giving it a classier look and airy feel. From a hybrid perspective the i3 gives a proper EV driving experience without the range anxiety of a BEV. Personally, if i am driving a radically different vehicle, i want it to look radically different rather than blending into the background, the i3 doesn't disappoint on this score. BTW, I am currently achieving 6.4 mi/kWh. The eNiro would no doubt be the top seller as a mass market EV ..... If they were readily available, they are certainly an appealing proposition at the moment, but my well be out trumped this time next year when there will be a huge increase in mass market manufacturer EVs. Yes, Mike, it is. It compares with an i3. Once you get used to it, you only need to use the brake pedal to come to a complete stop, as it is a bit like an automatic petrol car, which keeps driving when the speed has fallen to about 3 mph.

I am nearly 3 months into e-Niro ownership here in France and we are loving the car. We have done a few long trips in it which I have recorded on Kia e-Niro Diaries here on TH-cam.

20min test drive was all I needed to place my order - 11months wait apparently so hopefully my e-Niro arrives just as my e-Golf lease expires 🤞
I ordered my e-Niro last April and am picking it up on Monday (16/3/20). I am pleased as I was expecting to wait until June. Their problem is that they have two models and their sister company Hyundai also use the same battery pack for the Kona and so do Nissan in the Leaf. This was the "First Edition" and they have now upgraded it to the model "4".

Purely based on your review. I am going to buy the Kia E Niro in 2021. Its one of the best and honest reviews out there. If I were you two get rid of that tesla and buy 2 kia E niros. Especially since somebody likes it dooooo much🤗👍

We love ours. Just did a week in Ireland and commuted 150 miles a day to and from work on the public network out there. All perfectly doable including a weeks luggage for the 3 of us and our dog who takes up the entire boot.

My commute is 180 miles a day with 150 miles on the motorway.

You should test it out by yourself just in case. Try also with the heater as it can have somewhat of an effect on range.
Kévin Lind this car uses a heat pump so it will not use much more energy with the heating on. 😊
Nice video. Thumbs up back.👍 The E-Niro's good points shine through. The only one truly bad point about it isn't its fault. Availability. Undoubtedly, it will be bettered at some point, but this is a great design here and now, going to waste. In future years, people will look back on the E-Niro and ask why more weren't made when needed. And I think that is just as much to do with corporate strategy as the announced shortage of battery materials.
Just evs have one coming in, so if you’re not bothered about it being brand new no problem. That’s what I did with my Kona, I cancelled my new car order as delivery kept going back, so bought a second hand Kona from just evs

Glad you got to test the eNero. We ordered ours back in February, expected delivery in Sept/Oct 2019. Yes, we could get a Leaf probably in weeks, but for us the Nero is a better fit.
On buttons: LOVE THEM. Why: YOU try using a touch screen while wearing winter gloves! On our old Prius all the aircon/heating controls were on the infotainment screen. Had to take off gloves to use them :-(. On the present 2012 PHEV Prius they are buttons! You get to keep nice warm hands :-).
Thanks for the review. As a Kona owner, the niro is a great car. For next year the phone app is apparently incoming, as ever watch this space. I bought my car off the back of Bjorns video, without seeing the car, and doing it online, but it has met every need i have after 20000 miles in 7 months....
I think part of the delays overall with batteries is that everyone is waiting for the next big breakthrough, so no one wants to invest in tooling that may then be obsolete in 6 months
I have both Kona and e niro. I Iove both but finding the Niro driver seat back very hard and not as comfortable as my Kona. The Niro seems to keep charge rate higher to 79 percent too.
What about range? Which one has more range (more energy efficient)?
@@be236 very close. It's about space v led headlights and light grey interior options. Also centre console of Niro way way better design in my view. Kona Premium SE really trumps the Niro on spec...but both are marmite cars.
@@neilbrandon Here in "the states," Kona Electric is rated at 415km, while Niro EV is rated at 383 km... so Kona is about 30km more range, but seems European/WLTP specs shows Niro EV has slightly more range.. strange..
@@be236 the actual milage will depend on temperature, weather, driving style. I am finding my Niro about same as Kona if not better...early days though. If you are worried about small difference I would be more concerned about the difference between summer and winter, highway and city.
James, you mentioned a tweet: "I'll love all EVs when I can go and buy one on a Saturday afternoon from a dealer." And there you have it! I reserved my Tesla Model 3 way back in June 2016. Three years ago. Tesla finally sent me an email to order the car last month (May 2019). Finally. So I did ... and there's still no anticipated delivery date. Presently, for most of us, EVs are a myth. I have the money. And the desire. But can't get the car!

Love mine. Live in the Netherlands and have it since February as successor to my Ioniq Electric. It shares a lot, but is so much better in every respect (only but absolute efficiency). It is a pity Kia is not producing enough to keep up with demand. And the demand is probably so high because it fits the bill for many people who are not looking for an EV that looks from outer space, but just want a normal family car. In my opinion there is one word to describe the e-Niro: solid (road holding, range, design, practicality, performance, etc.; it's not groundbreaking, but the overall package is so good)
Btw: in the Netherlands the top spec version has even ventilated seats in front and full LED headlights.
Hey for years I’ve been saving for a Tesla model Y it’s my absolute dream. However my old gas car gave in last week and I have since long promised myself I’d never by a gascar again.. I walked in to a Kia dealership and test drove the 21 model Kia niro seems like they listend to you.. much improved charging 11kw onboard and Uvo app connect as standard. Since we absolutely need a car right now I opted for a three year lease. Deliverytime is three weeks and they even offered us a loaner car until it arrives...price was also really good fully even cheaper than most gas cars in it’s class.... so we are quite happy and excited eventough we put our Tesla model Y for another three years:)”
These are amazing cars, it's a great choice. We're currently driving the 38kWh Ioniq which does have a smaller battery, but it's so efficient. Enjoy your new car 👍

Almost like a concept car, I can't get excited about a vehicle that is not readily available. But that is at bit sour grapes as I have been so obsessed with the model 3 to have not put myself in line to get on the list to have had one.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! It’s not in my mind the most beautiful car, but no other car can match it at the price point. I’ve the Kona Electric and it brilliant but not quite big enough, that why we’ve ordered the Kia E Niro 4+. I did consider the Tesla but fit and finish seems to be a problem plus as you say it doesn’t have the range of the Niro, unless one opps. for the much more expensive version. Having seen your recent video and how unhappy you are with the model 3s fit and finish I think I’ve made, for me at least, the right decision. Tesla’s charging points are miles away from me in the SE of 🇬🇧 so that wasn’t part of the equation. The Kia has such a good range, close to 300miles that 99% of the time I would home charge. I believe Tesla haven’t either android auto or Apple CarPlay.
I use a Bose bluetooth speaker with my laptop; that stereo sounds pretty good to me, in reality it must be much better. Tnx fer the Video

Great video thanks. Your point regarding that were still at the point where your can't go to a car dealership on a Saturday and buy an EV at the moment is so true. There are now a number of excellent next gen EVs either released now or on the near horizon but still just out of reach for most for the next 12 months or so which is a shame. Ordered my Model 3 AWD 1st of May and patiently waiting!

Button counting on my own steering wheel, my 2011 VW Touran has 13 buttons including the horn!! You get used to it over time!!
The ENiro is on my wish list, supply here in France less of a problem compared to UK. But like James there a number of other cars due out in the next 12 months that are potentially as attractive as the e-Niro.

I do like your presentation and the Kia too. The lack of towing capacity is holding me back from ordering one. The waiting period is less of a problem, relatively. I had to wait 6 months for my brand new VW T6 to be delivered, an ordinary ICE transport.

Ordered in Feb so hoping for early next year. The option I’d like most is a HEPA filter, it’s particularly annoying breathing in others’ pollution when in an electric car (I appreciate I give off tyre and brake dust but less of the latter I hope with regen.)
So, I was thinking of getting the Tesla model 3 until I watched this!! But now knowing there is such a long waiting list I will go back to consider the Tesla, not sure what else would give me the range I need at sensible money.

We have finally decided. I'm talking to Kia tomorrow. A big standard long range eNiro 2 will suit our needs perfectly.
I will also add: we do not have anywhere to charge at home. We have a couple of friends who are prepared to let us use their driveways from time to time but even with the current cost of electricity at fast and rapid chargers I calculate that it will still cost less to run than an ICE and in real terms electricity prices will drop again in 12 to 18 months.
Looking forward to our summer holidays in Orkney ...

My parents are ready to upgrade to a long range EV. They drive 280 miles each way several times a year, the only motorway stop being Membury Services.
Unfortunately, because of the unreliability of the Ecotricity CCS chargers, I steered my dad away from Kia, or any other CCS car really. Until there is redundancy at most of the services, e.g. Ionity network, with several units available in case one has failed or is in use, I don't want them to be stuck or waste time worrying about where to divert for a charge.
Hopefully in 2020, the Model 3 will have become more affordable (the Supercharger network looks great) because as my dad gets older he will need a car that does more and more of the driving, to reduce accidents and relieve tiredness.
I wouldn't let motorway charging put them off. I'm always dubious about charging at motorway services and surprised when it works (which, to be fair is most of the time). In fact I had a coffee with James after he helped me out with an ecotricity charging issue at LFE.
So I now splash out on Polar Plus, tap the card instead of faffing with the app and, on the one occasion there was an issue with my account, customer services were brilliant. They started the charge remotely for me and then went off to sort out the issue. There are a number of other, reliable options, just off the motorways, often with better/nicer facilities.
That said, there should be much better, more numerous and reliable options at the MSAs. Perhaps competition would help.
What's the charging problem? You mentioned that you mentioned it without showing what you mentioned!
I think the problem about “charging” to which you refer is actually the problem that the “charging app” isn’t available in the UK., but is available in other parts of the world, James mentioned that it’s available in the US.
The last time I checked it was like a 2 year wait for a Kona or Niro here in Norway - if I could have walked into a dealer and driven away in one I probably would have replaced our aging ICE Golf by now. As it is, we have a reservation for an ID.3 and fingers crossed that will have less buttons but a similar efficiency to the Niro.

Got one on order should be here may June next year. We have the Niro Hybrid at the moment. I was thinking of the PHEV but with that range you don’t need it. And the cost was to close. I agree with your thoughts on the styling but it is really practical and it’s marketed as a crossover ( estate ) great review.
Did you not mention the 7 year warranty? I have had two leafs and after the three year warranty expired I was pay £300 per year for extended warranty I would keep the Kia for a full 7 years 😀
Get mine mid february and here in France we have full led lights but no heat pump.
Mine is dark blue and this color fit perfectly with the blue stripes.

Your android auto issues may be your phone not the software. I had issues when I switched to a leaf but it's only on one phone. Changed handset an it was fine. Never had any glitches or problems with voice commands. The leaf just used to loose connection but only on one particular handset
domhnall dods I thought the same. However, tried 5 (!) android phones and 'auto' had the same issues unfortunately. I have an iphone too and that's faultless.
Having said all that, android now have the better operating system and when Google sort 'auto' out it will be fab'. The big plus for 'car play' though is the way it puts everything relevant from the phone on the screen and lets you choose what you want...on the screen.
@@mrquordlepleen well I've been using android auto for 4 years now and have never seen these issues at all. 4 different vehicles plus rental cars and it's been flawless.
Great review - would I have one ? No, not now the new Soul is available which is much better sized to a retired couple and has usable van like properties ! Kia (and Hyundai) are on a roll that is unfortunately being slowed by battery availability but that will change in the next 2-3 years. Others better be planning to catch up and soon.

I wanted to comment on the car and review, Phil, not make personal observations about the reviewers and their life choices! I have not had any children myself, but my current EV can carry up to four adults and I may go for an e-Niro which will carry five. My choices are driven by the car, the ability to carry children being a nice by-product.
There was zip about how it drives. Being a front wheeler, how was the wheel slip at acceleration, especially from start. With that, any torque steer?

Just had a test drive in two of these Kia e Nero and couldn’t believe how noisy they both were, road and wind noise and even when stopped the motor noise, I couldn’t live with it.
Thanks James and Kate. You hit the nail on the head when talking about availability. It will not be long, however, before Kia/Hyundai and others will have to pull their socks up and take EV sales much more seriously. EV's will have to become their main business, otherwise they will face bankruptcy. From this superb review, we like the car - apart from that dreadful grille blanking plate, which also looks like a bug trap and a pain to keep clean. The range is more than adequate; at least 60 miles greater than our 'economical' fossil can manage, which is a huge plus point. So range anxiety is becoming history right now. The price is also owing within peoples' spending limits, and the figure you mentioned is probably negotiable. Was that without any subsidies?
And Florence is growing up quickly; she's a toddler already. Enjoy it!
I know I’m a bit late with this comment but you mentioned that you get between four and 5 mi./kWh going 70 miles an hour on the highway that is just not true you get between three and four at 70 miles an hour. I’ve put over 20 K miles on mine I get between four and five in the city in about 3.5 on the freeways in California doing 70 to 75,Thank you for your great reviews big thumbs up helped me in my purchase and I am very happy with it
Was there something wrong with the seatbelts because looking at Kate she was moving about and it looked like like the belt wasn't touching her.
I just bought a hybrid Niro. Was lucky to get the colour I wanted as they've had a rush on them, all because people have seen the eNiro in videos like this and want to get one. However, when they've found out about the waiting time, they've just bought the hybrid version as a "temporary" stepping stone and will buy a full EV next time.
In this edit Kate mentions James saying something about charging.. did I miss that? What is off putting about the charging on the Nero? Other than that a great very useful report. Hope to see you both at Fully Charged live :)

E-Niro rocks the EV world. A watershed opportunity. Kia will sort out production - eventually. Buttons are more reliable and easier to use. No fumbling through menus and frozen screens. Model 3 braking is a classic example of buggy software. I believe the dimples on the front grill may be for aerodynamics, like a golf ball.
Agree totally about the "Golf Ball" comparison. What other cars in the Hyundai/Kia stable use such similar front end treatments? The first time I saw a Kona EV, the golf ball feature came to mind. Perhaps this is the reason so many reviewers are stunned by the real world efficiency of these 2 compact electric CUV's.
Would be interesting to see what might happen with an already aerodynamic Tesla Model 3 were such a design element incorporated into the front end.
According to abetterjourneyplanner, one of these can make my annual trip across Europe in just a bit longer time then our diesel. And that's great. Not sure though, where would I find second driver for this trip. If I could by one of these.
jur4x, if this can almost keep up with a diesel, the Model 3 long range must be just about on par. That’s the only car that can keep up with the long trips I use to make 1400 miles each way, solo on several occasions.
If you are doing 2 driver trips, I think nothing can beat a diesel because you have so many choices on where to refuel and I’m guessing much more range than any EV on the market.
Actually the only thing that makes an EV even possible for me is I am too old to drive that hard and no longer need to. I can drive an hour and charge for 2 hours if needed. LOL
Drove the 39kwh last week still the 2019 model. Lovely car wide n sure footed. Still me top next car. Until something beats range vs price and quality

I did like the car, especially the driving position when I sat in it at the Junction event. And the first part of your video re-inforced me thinking maybe we will have a look at the abysmal used market for it in 2 years. But then you said no app support, and it instantly put me off. Not just for heating but being able to check the charge level, especially with all the weird problems with EH chargers etc nowadays, I got used to it with the Leaf (no matter how unreliable the app is) and wouldn’t want to go back. Excellent range though, very surprising. Still sad it’s impossible to get one

When you compare tesla 8x or 12x superchargers at the services that probably all work vs 1 Ecotricity CCS which may or may not? At least with that range finding a genie/instavolt/polar shouldn't be too much of an issue.

You should lower the rear headrests as far as they will go when there is nobody in the rear seats as they restrict rearward vision when using the rearview mirror.
Nice review. Personally I like the back of the car most, since there are none like it. The Niro has many pro´s, here in Denmark it comes with led headlamps, ventilated seats, and memory on driver seats, with easy acces. Just like the Model 3. But I would wait for the facelifted model, that should arrive next year. The infotainment is way better, with much bigger screen and faster response time. It should have app support at that time too. Niro is in same price range to the Model 3, and while the Model 3 has some really nice features, the Niro has even more. But not the same perfomance and handling of course. Anyway, great video, like that both of you make your points on the car :D

I bought a Nissan Leaf a month ago, and although I really like it I wish the e-nero was available. The Leaf is not comfortable on long journeys.
@captain pugwash They must have kept the same seats in the new one. I bought a cocyx support cushion and it has helped.

Yes the range is better than expected, I nearly bought an M3 but my better half liked buttons, and it is bigger inside than a model 3.
I have a 4 which has the bigger display, I am very pleased with it, I have previously had Range Rovers and Jags, but the Kia is better.
WOT....NO APP !😱 I considered a Niro (hybrid) which I considered to be the best spec'd / value for money hybrid...however I eventually got a BMW i3 Rex.
The Niro is unremarkable and uninspiring to look at, I agree with you about the grille, if it isn't required then why is it there? The front of the car would look far more modern without it and also have at least a modecom of individuality. I do like the level of spec and I am a fan of bringing back the knobs! The interior is very well screwed together with a quality-ish feel, apart from the fake leather, but it is such a black, bland, dreary place to be. Reviews of the US version show an ivory interior which really enhances the look and internal ambiance giving it a classier look and airy feel.
From a hybrid perspective the i3 gives a proper EV driving experience without the range anxiety of a BEV.
Personally, if i am driving a radically different vehicle, i want it to look radically different rather than blending into the background, the i3 doesn't disappoint on this score.
BTW, I am currently achieving 6.4 mi/kWh.
The eNiro would no doubt be the top seller as a mass market EV ..... If they were readily available, they are certainly an appealing proposition at the moment, but my well be out trumped this time next year when there will be a huge increase in mass market manufacturer EVs.

Yes, Mike, it is. It compares with an i3. Once you get used to it, you only need to use the brake pedal to come to a complete stop, as it is a bit like an automatic petrol car, which keeps driving when the speed has fallen to about 3 mph.
