    I cancelled my ID3 order because the software issues, and bought the Kia E-Niro. It has far exceeded my expections, and is a really nice car to drive. With the back seats down it’s load carrying ability is impressive. It is very energy efficient and it’s range estimate is generally accurate.

    You can disable the icy condition warning in the configuration menu - no need to go all mad about it :D Had my e-niro a couple of years and still love it, room for the teenagers and the dogs, long range, good performance, comfortable - to be honest, I think its the car I've been the most satisfied with owning, I'm 47 and had plenty of cars both less and more expensive, though no EV until the e-niro...

    Currently have two of these and have found them great cars. One doesn't have the heat pump heating and that has impacted the range a bit over winter, especially on shorter journeys. But couldn't find anything better at this price for moving people and stuff around the country.

    • @richardhaywoodh
      @richardhaywoodh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you be able to say what difference in mi/kWh the heat pump makes?

    • @Hyfly13
      @Hyfly13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interested in the ≈% impact of no heat pump if you have a rough idea. I don't think they necessarily return their investment but I like the idea of the efficiency and I doubt it is a cost you would regret

    • @alanmcconachie
      @alanmcconachie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mi/kwh difference really depends on how long the journey is. Normally notice a loss in range of about 5-10 miles each time the car is reheated. I never noticed it being as severe in the heat pump car.

    • @wobby1516
      @wobby1516 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alanmcconachie it makes sense that the heat pump version would be more efficient. I think that it would be useful if one does a lot of long, in the cold journey’s, but for the average guy who mainly runs around local. I wonder is it worth the extra as the Nero still has a good range with or without the heat pump.

    • @alanmcconachie
      @alanmcconachie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wobby1 Agree for most cases the loss of range for local journeys doesn't really matter as I'm not far from my home charger. If I was relying on public chargers or away from home more regularly then perhaps I would prefer the heat pump car but no regrets in skipping that option.

    Definitely an EV to consider when shopping for a practical vehicle. With the ability to have discrete button controls allowing one to keep eyes on the road is very nice feature. The driving range with the larger battery should solve the range issue for most. You showed us a very capable EV and you displayed feelings of why to seriously consider the Kia e-Niro EV. It is a nice looking vehicle in my opinion. Thanks for the honest review and pointing out what you thought was good and not so great. ✅

    Great review on the e-Niro and I agree with everything you say about it.
    I picked up my e-Niro 2 Long Range in October and it is the first EV and non German car that I have owned and it really is a brilliant car.
    I went for the e-Niro for the range, dare I say it “performance” which is really quite decent.
    I also needed a nice, good quality interior along with a good amount of space inside as I have two children including a 1 year old with a big Bugaboo buggy and the e-Niro boot manages to swallow this with space to spare.
    For those who are considering an EV the Niro is a great example. There are others in a similar price bracket but the specification and/or range won’t be close to the equivalent priced e-Niro.

    Niro was the perfect choice for me.
    It just felt like Kia had spent all the money in all the right places.
    Great build quality in all the important places, great range and efficiency, just big enough without being too big.
    All the must have tech without pushing up the price with gadgets you will never use.
    DC rapid charging is fast enough for days away . The 11kw AC charging in the 4+ is a bit of a bonus on 3 phase chargers, 22kw AC would have come in handy a few times but I would not want to pay extra for it.
    The styling is a bit standard eurobox but then I like a car to look like a car some of the 'futuristic' design features on some of the cars are just a bit meh to me.
    Only things that would have been nice is if they had had it rated for towing.

    Coming up to 3 years now with our e-Niro, one of the first to come into France in March 2019. Have covered 56,000 km in that time. The only fault was the passenger side wing mirror failed to fold back when the car is locked, replaced under warranty. Just got back from a 2,000 km round trip to Frankfurt. The car is efficient and comfortable on a long journey and especially quiet on the French autouroutes.

    I have been following many reviews on TH-cam and tested the Leaf on the road but looked at the available ev's at the Vancouver International Auto Show in March 2019. We bought a 2019 Kia EV Niro in April 2019 Vancouver Canada. Picked it up from Kia Show room and the dealer said it is not fully charged but had 490KM shown available. Very happy to this day which is January 14/22. In the spring April to late September and charging to 90% we get 470-480 km of range and the winter we only charge to 80% and get 375 km range. Received a letter from the Kia Dealership and wanted to buy our Kia at the price at this date plus xtra 110% because there are customers wanting it. We declined because when looking at all the latest EV's in North America with all the increase in horsepower BUT THE RANGE on majority is not has good. We like the roominess and the cargo space. Easy to get in and out especially when our friend is 6ft-3" tall with still headroom to spare. We will keep it and who knows when to sell.

    We have had our e-Niro since last May and absolutely love it. At the time we also considered the VW i3 but were put off by the then software issues. For the occasional long journey it is very comfortable. We charge at home via an Ohme between 12:30 and 4:30 and it is costing us pennies. One pedal driving is so easy using the paddles.
    Actually the Satnav is very good (TomTom I believe it is) having said that, this is the only negative we have about the car. Not that it isn't accurate or quick because it is; it's the updating.
    We had a message come up telling us it needed updating so I rang the leasing company as part of the agrement was servicing etc. They told me updating the maps on the satnav was not included. So, I rang my local Kia dealer and they wanted £50 to update the maps. £50 for what a two minute download? When I bought my last TomTom before getting the e-Niro it came with maps for life. The model we had before that cost me about £40 a year for four updates a year.
    Map updating for the Kia is a rip off! So I will be plugging in my phone and using Google Maps.
    Apart from that the e-Niro is still a very good EV.

    I had a diesel Audi Q5 Quattro S line and swapped to the E Niro 4+. I found for UK parking spaces, that the Q5 was a little large, aften leaving inches either side to the white lines. I have now had the E Niro for over 7 months and love it. I have not missed my Audi at all, this is a better size for me, like the buttons they left in the car and can also updatethe software for free, using the Navigation Updater app on windows.
    Heated seats all around and cooled front seats for summer, it has all the gadgets I want including the smart ctruise control. Also the sat nav is fully connected to the internet, so I have been very impressed by the navigation.
    My only improvement i would like is the sound proofing at higher speeds, not bad but could be better. (and a button for turning off the lane assist beeps!!)
    Funnily enough my son said the VESS sounds like an Angel type sound and says if someone got run over, they would think they had gone to heaven!

    You can remove the redundant polystyrene trays from under the boot floor for loads of extra storage underneath and/or drop the floor for extra height. Aftermarket Frunk kits (and gas struts) too so you can keep the cables by the front charge port and not underneath the rear luggage.

    I’ve the Niro 4+ , I can’t say I love it, It’s a great EV that’s perfect for our needs but for me the new EV6 is definitely on my next car list. Of course if it’s a cheaper car then why not the Niro 2. It comes with a slightly lower spec but its still a great car. The Tesla you drive is a great car, I’m just not struck by its appearance. The after sales service and repair can, I believe, be difficult unlike Kia who have loads of dealers around the country. Tesla certainly have the charging network sorted, but I think that’s beginning to change and in a few year won’t be a big deal.

    About 6 months in with mine. It works out fantastically cheap as a company car (effectively free due to employer incentives towards EVs and current very low BIK rates).
    Efficiency hovers around 4.2 to 4.5 miles per kWh in summer, 3.5 to 4 in winter. Best I've seen on a run was 5.8, although that was in very mild weather and averaging about 40mph. Worst was 3.2 from a 5-mile drive on a cold night.
    As a daily driver it's just about perfect: comfortable, quiet enough at speed, all the toys on my 4+ version. Heated steering wheel is absolutely marvellous!
    Range is far better than a lot of very expensive "premium" EVs. Will consistently achieve 240 miles in winter on motorways. In summer, driving on back roads at lower speeds, I've managed over 300.
    Build quality is excellent. The car feels like it'll last a lot longer than any German car at similar price point.
    Looks are a bit indifferent. I'm not a big fan of the "pretend SUV" look, would rather the roofline was a couple of inches lower and the boot 6 inches longer, i.e. a conventional estate shape.
    Things that annoy me:
    1. Boot floor should have been designed to sit at 2 levels. I would much rather be able to use the full depth of the boot than have about 8 inches or so effectively wasted under the floor.
    2. No storage under the bonnet, despite there being loads of space, especially if you take off the rather pointless plastic cover over the motor. Seems a missed opportunity.
    3. Instrument cluster auto-dimming isn't too clever, it's often too bright or too dim, and adjustability is quite limited - at dusk, even with the manual adjustment turned all the way down, it can be distractingly bright until the sensor finally decides "yup, it's dark".
    4. Remote control of heating etc relies on the car having a 3G/4G mobile data signal (I believe Kia use Vodafone for this). The signal where i live is unusable, but there's no alternative option, such as connecting via wifi or bluetooth.
    5. The windscreen washer jets really need to be heated (and possibly some trace heating in the pipework too). Unlike a petrol/diesel car there's no heat generated under the bonnet (in fact the heat pump can actually make it colder than ambient), consequently my usual 50/50 mix of screenwash and water is no good at all in this car when it's -2C outside, have to put neat screenwash in this car!
    6. For quick defrosting/demisting I'm surprised Kia didn't fit a Ford-style electrically heated windscreen. Has to be more efficient to heat the glass directly than to blow warm air at it.

    Fair review, 35k would be the cheapest model now, I went for the eniro3, got 1k discount, free mats and 2 years servicing and still paid 37k otr. Eniro3 does not have heat pump but that does not make much difference in SE England, I rarely go out when it's below 5 deg. Still getting over 250 miles per charge at moment. Eniro3 is first spec model with the app which is useful to start the heating and Defrost from your armchair before setting out, to stop start charging and check if you locked the car.

    Hi EVM great review as usual. Love listening to your knowledge and opinion on things electric. I am thinking of an Niro Plug in 2021 model here in Ireland costing 34k euro. only 10 months old 1 owner - he traded back into garage because he had hip trouble and went back to his old style car (Sportage) instead. The garage also has a 2019 model (26500 euro) with low mileage. 27k miles. i just though starting with a plug in before I go fully electric might suit me as I live out the country and need to travel 17 miles round trip to my mam twice a week and about 40 miles to my daughter and a few trips to local town 5 miles round trip. Of course since lockdown is over I will prob do a few long trips this summer.
    My question is have you done a review on the plug in model? Would you recommend one. And would it be mad to go for the 2019 model with the older battery obviously. Or should I try come up with the money to get the 2021 model. I heard a rumour that Kia will be discontinuing the Niro - so will it devalue at a fast rate? I would hope to change it maybe in 3 years. I have a 1.6 diesel at the moment (VW Passat - great car and economical but has high miles now - 10 yrs old). My friends keep telling me to buy a Hyundai Tucson 1.6 diesel - more economical and reliable when i dont know anything about the Niro and it a small car after all :-(

    We leased one of these, then a second one, because they were a good deal. With a lease, Kia gives the grants off the MSRP (Colorado), so the price was pretty near the same as a new, comparable ICE car. Getting a good deal on an EV makes it worth snapping up. I typically view a car as a depreciating asset, but in this case it feels almost like an investment. I pulled off the front bumper and covered the horn with some sound deadening material which is a must.

    I test drove a few EV’s before Christmas and the E-Niro was the one that ticked all my boxes and yet I kept looking at it and just couldn’t see myself in it, it felt like a middle age persons car and a tad dated, for such a large amount of money ( £38k for the 4+ which is the only one with a heat pump ) I just couldn’t sign up to that. Still use my S class for long trips. If the new model has the fast DC charging like the EV6 it would be an excellent update, as the slow DC charging is what keeps me from using it on longer drives.

    It still is one of the best EVs for range/size/price. If not the best. It's very disappointing we're still considering 500km "city range" as "long range" today, 3 years after the e-Niro already had it. EV6 should have wiped the floor with e-Niro, bringing 500km "winter motorway" range with its dedicated eGMP platform. Didn't happen. 3 years wasted by KIA, letting everyone else catch up more or less.

    Hired an e-Niro for a long distance road trip to Edinburgh over Christmas as I wanted to trial electric driving and have good space for all the pressies and luggage. Got the top of the range model and it was absolutely faultless. My first experience of adaptive cruise control too, and it ate up the miles. Will definitely consider one, but I think this generation of models now are limited by charging speed, not range. My partner and I found the range to be perfectly adequate bearing in mind toilet breaks and overnight stays, but what made the journey drag was the charging speed. If I have the ability to, I think I will be looking for a car that is capable of at least 70KW charging speeds in the future for those long-distance journeys, to stop us waiting around for longer than we feel we need to.
    Edit: just got to the point in your video where you said it is capable of 100KW, or 77KW most likely. Not sure what my rental was capable of, but I only used 50KW chargers outputting roughly 37KW, so that's probably why it felt long :) Still, I think 100KW/77KW charging will be a minimum requirement for me and will put less pressure on public chargers.

    • @davidholden2658
      @davidholden2658 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The E-Niro has 77kw fast charging not 100kw. However, that figure is the maximum, charging speed is affected by battery temperature, the air temperature and the state of charge of the battery. If the battery is somewhere between 20-80% and the other conditions are right you should get close to the maximum rate. One other factor is some chargers share the load so if more than one car is charging the charging rate will be lower.

    If they put the drive motor in the rear, gave it a frunk (or froot) and gave it 125kw of charging speed, the vehicle would be ready for at least 2-3 more years on the market. (It would basically be an ID.4)
    My partner and I used to have a 2019 Bolt and a 2020 Kona. The Kona got notably better efficiency, especially at higher highway speeds than the Bolt in pretty much all conditions. It rivaled the Tesla Model 3 that we now have (in efficiency). We ended up selling the Kona because the used car market went insane (we made money selling it) and it was starting to have reliability issues. It spent a month in the shop getting the drive motor replaced (it was making noise at lower speeds). It also had to have 2 of the door lock actuators replaced. This was all in less than 1 year of ownership (from new). It also had lots of bugs and glitches. The adaptive cruise control would go out for at least an hour every time we took it on a road trip. Sometimes it would decide that it just didn’t want to charge when plugged in overnight, yet it never set a fault (multiple different chargers). Sometimes the backup camera wouldn’t work. The brakes also drove me bonkers, especially the transition between regen and friction braking. There was no way to smoothly do a moderate stop in that car, especially if you hit the brakes suddenly (like if the traffic light in front of you changed to yellow and you neeeded to stop faster than normal). It was always either a normal, casual stop or full on panic stop with nothing in between. I could also never get consistent fast charging speed, and despite monitoring thermals, I could never figure out why. There were just lots of things about the car that made it seem sort of half-baked, like an unfinished or rushed project, so we kept the Bolt, sold the Kona and bought a Tesla Model 3. I don’t have any connection with the Tesla personally, it is very much an appliance to me (which is very odd for me) but my partner likes it and it is arguably the best electric vehicle *drivetrain* available in any vehicle at the moment. It’s just unfortunately attached to a pretty mediocre and questionably built car.
