The new electric Kia Niro is pretty big news for those of us who like to plug our cars in. Last year the e-Niro was the second best selling electric car in the UK, after the mighty Tesla Model 3. More than 10,000 of us bought them.
And now there is a new model. And it’s fair to say it's controversial in lots of ways. The looks are divisive and some of the technical details make it look like a step back rather than a leap forward.
So we have decided to pitch the new Kia Niro EV against its biggest rival…. The old Kia e-Niro….
Join Tom and Ginny as the compare the two and find out which is the better package.

I think the majority of e-niro owners don't really care about the charge speed as we charge at home or slow chargers. Secondly, the ride in the old one is too firm and in any kind of wetness it just spins it's tyres. Secondly the majority get over 300 miles of range as it's so efficient. So for the majority of owners, this is quite a nice upgrade with softer suspension, less loss of traction and more useful features and a lot more than 5 miles.
And secondly, the base model ev6 is missing quite a few features over the Niro EV 4 such as front parking sensors, auto parking, premium sound system, ventilated seats and heated rear seats, electric seats, electric tailgate, V2L, many safety systems etc. So is it really worth it over an Niro EV4 just for an 800V system?

I think it is a little disingenuous to suggest that people would go for the EV6 in poverty spec over a Niro EV in '4' trim fully loaded, because the price similarity is not the only factor at play when deciding on the car that is right for you.
They are not really in the same market space. The EV6 is a very big car with compromised load space for a start.
In base 'air' spec, where it is similar in price to the fully loaded Niro EV, the EV6 is missing so much kit that the supposed better ride and faster charging wouldn't make up for all the missing kit, for me anyway.

    • @timsmith5339

I think it depends on your priorities. TBH, I work with a lot of people who look at cars and know that it has 'this pack' and 'that option' and I just think what sad individuals they are. No car leaves the showroom now without everything that you could realistically want and more, so to call a car 'poverty spec' does not ring true to me. I would have the EV6 if it drives better, and from what I can gather, it does. This is the 'option' I try to find in my cars and it is sadly lacking in most.

Good video as always but would take issue with your comment about the price of the 4 being so close to the EV6. The EV6 now starts at £44,165 for the base model whereas the 4 trio Niro is £41,675, so that is approx £2.5k more for the EV6 base model. If you are a private buyer stretching to afford the fully specced Niro thats significantly more, not all of us want PCP which I guess is where your point is valid.

How does the new shape/size effect efficiency? The out going shape got very close to stated range which made it stick out in eV world. Does this one? I ask because I belive the ev6 struggles to be as efficient, I think because of the mass of the thing!

Actually slow fast-charging is the only small drawback of the eNiro, which I encounter once a year during holidays. The new one looks better, feels better, although it's not like the space-ship experience that you get in the ev6. Anyway, it's a perfect all-rounder with decent boot space suitable fo a family of 4, especially when you remove the excessive styrofoam from underneath the boot floor. Higly recommended.

I think the grey / silver additions on the white car (the one tested has black cladding etc and is not the full grey package level 4) looks distinctive. As a driver of a First Edition e-Niro I can honestly say it has been one of the best cars I have owned. I put all weather tyres on mine which improved the handling. In summer I regularly get over 300 miles range. I charge at home so the charging speed is only an issue when traveling long distances and then by the time I have had a drink and something to eat the car is charged. The running costs are very low. No car tax, very little spent on fuel (I have solar) and residual values that are nearly double the sum expected 3 years ago. So the changeover price to purchase the new version (even with the price rise) is okish.
I wouldn’t buy an EV6 as it is too big and the price / spec for the base version mean even the top spec version of the Niro EV is better value. Plus the waiting time of several months.
We have children in car seats in the back so I actually much prefer the harder plastic used on the back of the front seats - kids tend to kick the back seats (mostly unintentionally)!
There is a reason that the e-Niro has proved so popular as a family run around. I think the new one will prove to be just as popular. For me the improved design, upgraded interior, better tech etc and cost to change made it a relatively easy decision to order the new model. I hope it will be at least as good as my current version.

  • @awgphoto

I test drove the new Niro EV in the basic 2 trim yesterday. I was underwhelmed and did not enjoy the experience. While the drive and handling are very good as described in the review, I found the interior unsatisfying and it just did not feel right. I hate the change from digital to analogue speedo with its 160mph top speed requiring a double take to stay at the 50-70 speed limit. It made me feel unsafe. After a very enjoyable 75 mile drive home via Speyside in my current 2 year old e-Niro 4 and a good night's sleep, I have cancelled my Niro EV 4 order this morning. Why 'upgrade' the perfect car? I will wait for the EV4.

I'm glad you addressed the 35% less torque in further detail than other reviewers because that is a puzzling change, especially if it's the same motor as before, as the lady mentioned. Limiting current and therefore torque is hardly going to be related to economy because you don't have your foot in it anyway when driving for economy and a limit helps nothing. They could have improved traction control if needed by better active means, or limited torque in all but Sport mode so it's still there if needed. But what they've done is simply lock out a significant part of the motor's designed torque envelope for no stated reason. Will the next Kona be the same? I can only assume that this is because both these runout models have gearbox problems. The E-GMP cars have a completely different motor/gearbox architecture. Thanks for the review!

This has been confirmed by my dealer who, when I raised the question with them having seen a post on a Facebook page, knew nothing about it. This applies to orders made after 8th July without an change in price; bit if a cheek (actually, taking the piss) given price rise on 1st July. When you were talking about the reduction in the motor torque, I was confident it was going to be an improvement to efficiency. Then there was the aerodynamic improvements too. I felt sure that the reduced charging rate was going to be offset by more miles per kW/hr. So I did the sums for you, Kia's range figures equate to an extra 1.5 miles of range over the old car if the battery was enlarged by the same amount. That is a 0.5% improvement in efficiency, welcome, but not sufficient to justify losing the torque and charge rate. Basically it feels like the same tech with the compromises shifted a bit.

The EV6 in the showroom seemed really cramped height-wise. I'm only 6'3", there are plenty of much taller people than me, but it was straight out as an option because of that, plus the really useless boot space, nowhere near the shape or volume I need. Though to be fair, I didn't get much time to actually check it out as the sales rep in the garage just wouldn't leave us alone, stood in the car doorway talking/selling constantly. Ugh.
The Niro is on the shortlist, thankfully the second dealer we went to wasn't full of try-hard salesmen so we got a chance to check it out in peace and test drive it. I prefer the new shape of the nero. I dont like the looks to busy unless you go for colour coded. Tech spec ( charge speed) is too low for 2022 and no AWD version. Its not work the £42000 Kia are asking for it when £6000 more gets you a mid range AWD EV6 which has better colours too.
No i wont be getting EV6 either as boot capacity and design is too small for me and my uses. Plus both too expensive for average joe blogs.
Dont agree that its better and less is more . The goal post's by other in same bracket have set the bar higher than the niro spec so its at best stagnated / taken step backwards.

    A couple of pointers here:
    1) They mention that the new Niro EV is just 0,3seconds slower than the old one. This is wrong. You cannot compare the official numbers 0-100km/h (~0-60MPH). Also, the new Niro EV have 72kW peak charge rate at CCS. However, the battery chemistry is changed and charging curve is changed, which in theory, it should be pretty equal.

You compare charging speeds but don't mention that it stays higher longer so the charge curve is better and gets to 80% faster than the old one. Who cares about 0-60 unless you're on a track, it is still nothing to sneeze at. As Bjorn showed the frunk also has a seal to prevent dust and leaves getting in but useful for charge cables or to keep drinks cool. OK maybe once or twice a year I'll have to wait an extra 10 minutes? OTOH the extra say 30-40 miles of the Niro over the EV6 may mean no need to charge at all so it balances out. Unless you are a road warrior with multiple long distance drives (in which case, maybe just get a Tesla?) I'd say charging speed is far less important than many other features. That is about £10000 more, and I agree it seems a much more desirable car. But £10K more desirable?

... Yes, it would be nice for the business driver fraction if the Niro EV could charge with >=125 kw. For me and maybe the other "new e-automobilists" with a somewhat more limited budget, it's just right. Why? Because we charge 94% of Our time at the wall box. Neither Taycan, Model3, e-tron, EV6 nor others will top that at home. Instead, they burn significantly more kW per 100km and are also significantly more expensive to buy. Anyone who wants to finance the express charging surcharge should do so. What counts for me is how much I pay for the 100 km driven route, whether it is based on tried-and-tested technology (eNiro since 2018 with the best references) and whether maintenance costs me a pig's money. It has to have a frunk, be able to carry bike racks and pull the small trailer, be comfortable to drive and have useful assistants.

If you don't put it in sport and punch it, you are left with a very quick car that handles curves very nicely, with a firm but comfy ride. Not sure why all this backfilling on the massive torque cut, without a real engineering reason give. There may be one, but maturity is not it.
