      There will be a significant waitinglist on the eNiro, Kona Electric and probably the new Soul Electric. The Leaf wins in availability and slightly more storage than the Kona. I would also think Nissan is a bit ahead in autonomous systems, see the old video from Fully Charged on how aware it was of its surroundings, but we have yet to see if Nissan will use this advantage in their next Leaf e-plus model.

    • @500846

    • @davidarf
      @davidarf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree that the Kona and Niro are potentially game changers, but the key issue here is availability. Sadly there is a very long waiting time for the Kona and I suspect the same will apply for the Niro. The Kona is a little smaller than I would have preferred and the Niro looks a better size, but the Kona is an excellent drive and I think the Ioniq, the Kona and Niro leave the leaf in the dust on the really important aspects of drive train efficiency and battery management. On a motorway speed run in cold weather I managed 4.1 miles/KWH and on local driving I get between 5 and 5.6 miles/KWH in the Kona.

    It's good that all manufacturers are not targeting the same market. The Koreans are doing functional (if a little bland) mid price EV's with good equipment and range. Audi have a really well specc'd SUV. Jaguar have a AWD hot hatch (It's really not an SUV...) in the I-Pace for people who want performance. People who buy ttaditional SUV's and fast cars don't care too much about efficiency and I don't think they are going to start now just because the propulsion system has changed. I have personally placed an order for an I-Pace because for me to leave turbo'd cars, I need an EV that excities me, and the Jag does that in spades. There is a market for all kinds of different EV's. Let's enjoy them, whatever you choose!

    • @couplandsj
      @couplandsj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      While the iPace may not be what everyone thinks of as an SUV, it is at least 4WD. There are few 4WD options in the EV market, and for this of us who want/need the security of 4WD, the iPace is definitely a great car. For me, its the nicest EV on the market, the only downside is the lack of a SuperCharger type network that is reliable and available.

Still baffles me that you could buy a Passat 10+ years ago which had LED brake lights as standard, and yet many brand new cars (even some expensive ones from BMW) still use regular bulbs.

      Sthilboy56 With fewer moving parts to wear out and the annual savings in electricity over gasoline (petrol) one might consider an EV as a longer term investment. I think the cost (fuel and repairs/maintenance) of owning a £20k ICE vehicle over 8-10 years would be higher than the £33k KIA EV. Plus the savings in reduced guilt from having zero toxic tailpipe emissions as you drive along. Worth considering.

I have driven the Leaf, Zoe and Ionic and can honestly say that the Niro is better than them all, by a significant margin. Good size vehicle - not at all small and mean; quality cabin with driver controls and technology; a real pleasure to drive.
    I have driven many luxury cars in my life and the Niro EV beats them all, without a shadow of doubt. I drove the top of the range big battery car, it costs 46,000€ here in France minus 6000€ gov. grant minus 2500 scrappage diesel car scheme so would cost me net approx 37,000€ or roughly £32,000. Kia has a notorious habit of changing specs from country to country for what is supposed to be a "World Vehicle". Unfortunately, the UK is being short changed in several areas, ie Halogen Headlights (North America has Quad LED's), lack of heated rear seats, and the omission of an electrical outlet in the back seat (I believe they call it a Schuko or something like that in Europe). Obviously, they've done what they had to do to keep the price below $33 thousand pounds AND they probably had increased costs of this model to redesign and equip it for Right Hand Drive.
    One would think that by the 2020's, the world could standardize of more things such as Left Hand Drive for the UK and the Metric System for United States but everyone is too stubborn and stuck in their old ways. 69% of the World's Countries drive on the Right Hand Side of the road, including most of Europe, China, Russia, Japan, all of North America and virtually all of South America, as well as the majority of Africa and the Middle East, leaving 31% of countries (but a much lower percentage of vehicles) to drive on the left. Virtually all of the Right Hand Drive vehicles are manufactured for former British Colonies. Fortunately, Canada sided with their American neighbours and they drive on the "correct/right" side of the road.

    now just imagine the extra storage space if manufacturers weren't obsessed with having the drive control on the centre console. Why a simple switch you use once or twice per drive needs to have its dedicated space in the centre usually with a big shift lever is beyond me. Look to the Prius and it's simple toggle joystick on the dash or the Dodge Ram with the knob selector. With all that room why not something useful in the centre console like a dedicated phone holder that props the screen up to drivers view, or an extra 2 cup holders, sunglasses holder, etc.

    I'll be able to afford a 30k car when hell freezes over. Tipping point? Not for some time to come. Wonder how much they'll cost after Brexit?

    Why is everyone only making stupid fake suv things, I’m never going to buy any of these electric cars if no one makes a good actual bloody car. The new Tesla roadster is perfect but much too expensive. Wish someone would make a more modest model along those lines, a compact, low down 2+2 cabrio.

    Love the range and efficiency but just can't accept BOTH of their rear ends. Looks pretty awkward IMO.

    I wonder if we'll even see ANY of these cars in Australia. Leaving aside my previous range related comments, availability of EV's in Australia is atrocious.
    I think there are currently all of 6 models available? Most with considerable difficulty.
    5 years ago it was... 2.
    And that's with Teslas having been available here, so you can make a pretty good guess what those were...
    Personally I'd like to see what the production version of the VW ID looks like, and how it holds up as a real vehicle.
    Sure the concept car does in fact work, unlike a lot of concepts, but it's still got a few elements that are... Improbable on a production car...

      KuraIthys When I contacted Kia about it, they said “Well certainly not in 2019”, so looks like 2020 at the earliest!

    But the BIG QUESTION is......does it have the ultimate tech: a steering that adjusts forward and backwards????? The Nissan LEAF doesn't! 🙈🙈🙈🙈

    Hi Jonny. A torsion bar is a type of *spring*. (see Jag E-type unequal A arm front or Porsche trailing arm rear).

      He meant torsion BEAM, I suspect he doesn't know the difference between torsion bars and torsion beams.

    Kia revised the e-niro range from 301 miles to 282 miles. But EPA range is 239, which is more realistic.

    The Morris Minor 1000 has independent Torsion Bar front suspension.
    Not sure if they still make them.
    Also has proper spare wheel.

      and you could buy a renault zoe for £3,000 - 5,000 and strip all the wiring and motors, batteries out and have a Morris Minor EV for a fraction of the price of the Kia...
