Isaac theorizes on the purpose and powers of the Great Prince of the Forest from Bambi!

Said to be one of Walt Disney’s favorite films, Bambi is the beautiful and whimsical story highlighting the experiences shared by all in nature: all creatures fall in love, experience loss, fight for what they believe in and find purpose in their lives. For Bambi, his purpose is to take his father’s place as the Great Prince of the Forest. The Great Prince is mysterious yet honored, distant while being venerated for his actions for the forest. What is Bambi and his father praised? What is the purpose of the Great Prince? I think the Great Prince has an unexplored deep purpose in the forest.

In the original novel, we learn that the deer are only referred to as princes because they consider the elks to be kings! The novel has the animals act a bit more realistically, so the deer are too afraid to ever communicate with the elks (they can only stand there and make basic animal calls rooted in instinctual fear) but Bambi's mother describes them as far stronger and more important than even the deer. It may not be official or anything, but it does tie in nicely with the Elk from Fantasia. Maybe he's the one who entrusted these duties to deer like Bambi's father?
For anyone who's interested, here are two quotes from the novel! One detailing Bambi's first encounter with them, and the other confirming their reputation as higher Royal figures.
"Oh, Mother," Bambi whispered, "who was it?"
"Well," said his mother, "they are not so dangerous when all is said and done. Those are your big cousins, the elk- they are strong and they are important, far stronger than we are."
"And aren't they dangerous?" Bambi asked.
"Not as a rule," his mother explained. "Of course, a good many things are said to have happened... They've never done any harm to me or any one of my acquaintances."
"...Why should they do anything to us," asked Bambi, "if they are cousins of ours?" He wanted to feel calm but he kept trembling.
"Oh, they never do anything to us," his mother answered, "but I don't know why, I'm frightened whenever I see them. I don't understand it myself. But it happens that way every time."
(taken from page 60 in my edition, it might be different for yours!)
    As for the second:
"Sometimes he liked to listen to his big cousins the elk. The whole forest would tremble with their kingly voices. Bambi used to listen and be very much frightened, but his heart would beat high with admiration when he heard them calling. He remembered that the kings had antlers branching like tall, strong trees. And it seemed to him that their voices were as powerful as their antlers. Whenever he heard the deep tones of those voices he would stand motionless. Their deep voices rolled toward him like the mighty moaning of noble, maddened blood whose primal power was giving utterance to longing, rage, and pride. Bambi struggled in vain against his fears. They overpowered him whenever he heard those voices, but he was proud to have such noble relatives." (pages 74-75)

The book alone gives a fairly equally big focus with Bambi as both a fawn and a stag(similar to how Simba gets equal focus as both an adult and a cub) as opposed to Disney which mostly focuses on the fawn version and giving the stag version a minor focus.

The power of the elk in Disney's Fantasia makes sense as well, as the deer cannot control their power as it runs on emotion, but the Elk, a King more powerful than any Prince, deliberately wakes the Spring Sprite, bringing about one of Nature's most phenomenal changes with but a breath. No wonder the deer fear and love him.

It's not entirely correct. Bambi in the original is a roe deer, and they're the princes, and then there are the deers, and they're the kings.

@@Laia92 I can understand why you'd think that! It's true that Bambi is a roe deer in the novel, but the novel outright calls the 'king' cervids elks.

@@LunamFlore Oh ok, because I read the Italian translation, and there the "kings" are simply the deers, without other explanation. I don't know how it's written in the original German version...

I think this is the first time I've seen a theory about Bambi. It's definitely an interesting one, and I support it 100%. It gives a good reason as to why Bambi and his father are so important, other than just carrying the title of prince. I really like the thought of them having a deep connection to nature. Their abilities don't come off as nonsensical, since Bambi having exaggerated super powers would take away the movie's more serious tone. Great video as always, Wotso. :)

While this is an interesting theory and a well done video, the original book debunks a part this theory. In "Bambi, A Life in the Woods", all male deer are referred to as princes, not just Bambi. The word "prince" is just the deer term for a buck, specifically roe deer which Bambi is. The Great Prince of the Forest is based off of the Old Prince in the book, called so because he is the oldest of all the roe deer, and so is the most wise and knowledgeable of them. Specifically, the Old Prince teaches Bambi lessons on growing up. When Bambi's mom starts leaving him alone for a time, the Old Prince berates Bambi for crying for his mother. When Bambi is older, the Old Prince shows him how to avoid snares, and finally shows Bambi the body of a dead human, demonstrating how humans are not all powerful forces of death, but simply mortal animals. But the Old Prince is hardly the ruler of the forest. Larger deer like the elk(aka moose for North Americans) are referred to as kings, and most of the smaller deer are terrified of them, despite them not doing anything in particular. The kings are portrayed as more aloof and mysterious though, and their actions have little bearing on the rest of the animals.
I think the confusion comes from the movie sequel made. In the first original Disney movie, Bambi is referred briefly to as young prince, but in the same tone as an address like "young man". Remember, Thumper was the only one to ask and hear Bambi being named at his birth, so the other animals simply have no name for the baby deer at this time. As Bambi grows older (and presumably, the other animals learn his name), he stops being addressed as prince or young prince and is simply Bambi. The Great Prince shares a similar roll as the book version, being the oldest and wisest of deer. He watches over and warns the herd, and takes interest in warning adult Bambi of the presence of man, but not because the Great Prince is the guardian of the forest, but because Bambi is his offspring.
The sequel (midquel?) was written using the more modern use of the term prince, with the Great Prince being treated almost like royalty and respect as a protector connected with all of nature. He is actively grooming Bambi to take his place as head of the forest citizens and constantly tells Bambi what is and is not appropriate "princely" behavior. This Bambi's role is elevated to beyond what it actually was in the previous movie.

As someone who's watched the movie hundreds of times, especially when I was a child (it was and still is my favorite Disney movie), I've always taken the Great Prince in Bambi to be a respected elder. The forest population's respect for him makes them more in awe and respective of his descendants in turn. Sort of like how Prince William gets a lot of love and respect built in not only because of his nature and good deeds but because his late mother was also loved and respected and he reflects her in many ways.

I’m a big fan of the original novel, due to its meaning and deep truth of life. I feel in the novel, that The Great Prince, wasn’t so much about blood line, but more about wisdom, and the ability to survive life and man’s threats. The reason for my thinking, is because in the book, all the male deer are referred to as Princes, and not just Bucks. They are given a superior look, because for a long time, the Princes don’t even converse with Bambi, but also with the other does. Later, The Great Prince is also referred to as the Old Stag, showing that his superiority isn’t just due to his bloodline, but more so because of his age. As mentioned in Bambi’s Children, the Owl states that the bucks are lucky to live to be 2 years of age, being that the deer are targeted by hunters, or die from life’s causes.
In the book Bambi, when Faline and Gobo find out who The Great Prince is, they explain who he is known as, to Bambi. “The Old Prince is the biggest stag in the whole forest. There isn’t anybody else that compares with him. Nobody knows how old he is. Nobody can find out where he lives. No one knows his family, very few have seen him once. At times he was thought to be dead because he hadn’t been seen for so long. Then someone would see him again for a second and so they knew he had been. He speaks to nobody and no one dares speak to him. He uses trails none of the others ever use. He knows the very depths of the forest. And he does not know such thing as danger. Other Princes fight one another at times, sometimes for fun or to try each other out, sometimes in earnest. For many years no one has fought with the old stag. And of those who fought with him long ago not one is living. He is the Great Prince.” Bambi A Life in The Woods by Felix Salten pages 69-70. Later on in Bambi’s life, The Great Prince teaches Bambi the lore of the forest, and shows him that Man isn’t all power.
And to contradict the Disney Bambi 2, the book actually never says The Great Prince took care of Bambi after the death of his mother. In fact, The Great Prince mocks Bambi for not being able to take care of himself when his Mother leaves him for long hours, saying: ‘“What are you crying about?” The old stag asked severely. Bambi trembled in awe and did not dare answer. “Your mother has no time for you now,” the old stag went on. Bambi was completely dominated by his masterful voice and at the same time, he admired it. “Can’t you stay by yourself? Shame on you,”’ Bambi page 67. According to the book, when Bambi’s mother died, he was already quite older, whereas Disney makes him look so young, causing it to be more heartbreaking. The book pretty much skips what happens during the aftermath of Bambi’s Mother death. It only shines a little light on what happed after Bambi is growing in his antlers. It says he was only bullied by two bucks(Ronno & Karus). But never mentioned that The Great Prince raised him in between.
Do you think one day you could make a video on the differences between Disney’s Bambi and the Original Book? I personally feel that Disney ripped the Original Bambi from its rooted meaning and what it stood for.

I’ve loved the movie Bambi since childhood. Faline omg, she was such a deer(dear), so sweet, gentle and back when they first met she was playful and giggly. Bambi has made many friends and one rival(Ronno was a huge jerk wad). Ronno was so arrogant, snowbody(nobody) liked him that much. His mom’s death almost traumatized me as a child.

      Theory:
Is Yzma the reason for talking animals in Disney movies? When Pacha threw her potions at her attacking guards, it turned them into animals, and a guard asked if he could go home because he was just turned into a cow. Also, Kuzco could talk too. Maybe, Yzma experimented on her guards and they became animals, and then she abandoned them to the wild because they were failures, and left them to mate with their new kind to create more talking animals. This could also have led to the animals uprising in Zootopia and Chicken Little, and maybe Night Howlers are just plants that take away the animals last bit of humanity. In the guard/cow scene, there was a gorilla guard and a warthog guard, this could be how Turk and Pumbaa talk! Also, it can be seen that Yzma has a ton of potions for almost every species so that's how other animals talk. This doesn't line up with your Disney Timeline, but I think its pretty good.

I used to adore Seamus Gorman. I loved his earlier videos. But, you've surpassed him. You've been putting out some great content (unfortunately, I rarely comment to let you know of my appreciation). This is an amazing theory you've presented. Have you consulted with any Indigenous elders (Native Americans) on this subject matter? I'm curious, because it's very in line with Anishinabe teachings. It's just unexpected of a TH-camr, especially of someone who may not have necessarily taken a course in Indigenous Environmental Education or Indigenous Studies, for that matter. Either way, it's very good. You should be proud of your work.

Wow, a Bambi theory is probably the last thing I expected from the disney fandom, but happy to hear more discussion about my favorite movies. Also Its a 'midquel', Wotso. I don't care what anyone says, Bambi 2 may had its problem but it is still one of the finest disney's direct-to-video sequel/'midquel'
Your evidence of this theory felt more like a coincidences rather than The Great Prince having anything to do with the weather changing, honestly. Film wise, I don't think they'll give rain in the middle of Bambi's birth, because all the animals needed to present, when rain, all the animals would stay in their dens and rain usually represents sadness in stories, hence why the rain comes, it also indicates that spring is near, which can also symbolises change, growth, moving on and starting a new life, which is what the film gave to Bambi (moving out to a new den, having a new doe (caretaker), and also the change in his father, from being strict, serious and disciplined, to somewhat open and playful towards his son, it was quite brief, but it still counts. If anything it has more to do with the mood of the film and each characters rather than "The Prince is feeling sad, so he made it rain for today"
Your theory about the Great Prince being in control of the forest's powers and weather was not very convincing enough, in a way I suppose they are like the forest/deer versions of the Lion King, but this is very interesting, I think there's some mythologies regarding deers having control the whole forest

See, for me, there are three of the most powerful characters in the Disney Universe: Bambi the Great Prince, Simba the Lion King, and Elsa the Fifth Spirit.
I like that Bambi, having a deep connection to the forest, can sense/hear/feel where people are, even from so far away, with his hooves. I was thinking of this idea recently, from 4 years ago. . .
    **Scene**:
King Simba is chasing a group of antelope, not knowing that Bambi is among them. Bambi, knowing that Simba is chasing him, dashes into a forest. Bambi senses where Simba is by hearing with his hooves and feeling where he is, and starts toying with Simba by quickly darting in and out of the bushes, immediately catching him off guard. Simba is thinking that this is no ordinary antelope.

Felix Salten wrote Bambi: a life in the woods. All male deer seem to he referred to as “princes”. In Bambi’s children, about his twins, his son comes across a pair of Elk sparring over “their wives” and they’re referred to as “The Kings”.
Although I’m sure your theory is exactly what Felix Salten was going for.

How about we simplify it a bit 1. The stag often symbolizes the untamable wild. 2. Several hoofed animals including deer can 'hear'/feel vibrations through their hooves. (Referring to the does in the meadow thing) 3. Stags with a high amount of points on their antlers are at times referred to as princes, monarchs, emperors or similar, different factors affect the number of points on the antlers including age and genetics.

  • @beedolphin1

in the original tale of Bambi from Felix Salten, Bambi was a prince true but it wasn't really taken into thought of being the prince until the second book Bambi's Children. There Bambi was to do what he can to help animals in need and even to teach other to survive. He's shown in the first book that Man isn't a God like the animals think and even learns that Man has the same fears as the animals, even death. This knowledge Bambi carries in the second book and he teaches that to the animals though mostly to his children, Gurri and Geno. Also the Elk were known as Kings and the Prince and Kings had similar jobs of watching the forest but the Kings mostly kept to themselves from what I can gather from the books. It is known that Bambi became The Great Prince like his father but only because of how wise he become and how long he's lasted to then other deers in the forest. Bambi mother said this in the movie that the great prince is very wise and is the longest living deer in the forest thus earning the animals respect.

Well consider this hun....if the Great Prince truly does possess a special power which connects him to the land and his subjects....does young Bambi ALSO possess this power since he is the young prince? I noticed in Bambi II when Bambi was being cared for by his father, the Great Prince, that initially the Prince tried to teach his young son his ways....and Bambi - while he did try to mimic his father's behavior - couldn't really understand his father's power....but later in the movie he WAS able to hear the hoofbeats of the animals and so forth. Do you think this power will grow stronger for Bambi as he grows up?

I think the stag might be a reference to the Horned God from Celtic and Neo-Pagan/Wiccan mythology. The Horned God embodies the Sun and nature itself, often portrayed with stag horns and sometimes a deer himself.
The Firebird Suite might reference this mythos (but as for the fire bird/phoenix I'm not sure).

I would like to point out in the Felix Salten Bambi, the Elk are called Kings and Bambis kind are terrified of them. In the book all young male deer are to be princes yet Bambi and his father had learned that man wasn't God and that another being is over man. In the second book, Bambi takes his father's place as the leader of his herd and the animals that live around his herd. Thus, making Bambi and the Great Prince protectors of the forest though it's not clear if the Kings have any real role.

To bad they focus Bambi to much as fawn. As a stag he's at his full strength where can fight other stags and dogs. Let alone having a more major focus as a stag in the book compared to the film.
It’s like seen just half of Simba with just his younger cub self when at the same time he’s characterized and equally recognized by both ages as an adult and a cub. He simply can’t be a lion king without being an adult just like Bambi can’t be prince without being a stag.
