As a latina, Dolores is a common name, it's common naming your children as a feeling (Esperanza, Soledad, Dolores, etc which mean Hope, Loneliness and Pain) It's associated with what the mother feels during her pregnancy, not about the kid in it of itself. But yeah, they did in on porpouse.
I always felt like she was trying to get Mirabel to take action from her little rap in We Don't Talk About Bruno. The way it ends with her pointedly asking, "Do you understand?" just makes me feel like she was relaying important information, rather than gossip.
I thought that meant "He was blamed for everything, just like you are. And you can find him." Because just before that, it's "It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling, always left Abuela and the family fumbling..." Which is sort of like how Mirabel is blamed for not seeming to have a gift at all.
I think she's always hoping people will pick up on little cues like she does. "I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling" is present tense. She explicitly told Mirabel that Bruno is here, currently, in the present, and Mirabel just didn't pick up on it because she was inundated with so much information at once. She's looking directly at Mariano over the wall in her second verse, making it clear that *he* is the man of her dreams, but no one notices. Even while she's singing, "and I'm fine, and I'm fine, and I'm fine, I'm fine," so is Isabela at the same time. Dolores KNOWS that Isabela doesn't want to marry Mariano, but no one listens to either woman about what they want. She's also the only one besides Isa who doesn't outright badmouth Bruno. "It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling, always left Abuela and the family fumbling, grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand." She sympathizes with Bruno. Perhaps she didn't expose him because she wanted him to be able to live in peace. And she definitely told Camilo at least a few things about Bruno. He's the only one who associates Bruno with rats, but Bruno would only have been hanging out with rats after he started living in the walls. The only way Camilo would know that detail about him is if he heard it from Dolores. But Dolores speaks very softly and very quickly, so it might be hard for people to catch everything she says. The moment at the proposal just seemed like a moment of crisis. A secret that was too big for her, and when she whispered to her brother, unable to hold it in, chaos ensued. Everyone talking at once, Luisa crying, rats everywhere, and every little noise is multiplied by a thousand for Dolores and she just loses it. It looked like ADHD sensory overload. It was just too much for her. In short, I don't think she's actually withholding any information, I think people just aren't listening.
Them appearing on the front door was meant to resemble that they are now a happy, united family; as opposed to before when they had their pictures on separate doors, were a toxic family, and were each facing their own hardships
When the miracle got snuffed, she actually sang loudly, when she never spoke that loud until that point, and I really did feel bad for her when it came back. Sensory overload is the worst :

I heard Isabella’s line too and initially I thought that he was mistaken and thought it was Dolores’s line. But if she is really singing and Isabella’s just singing over her, that makes a a lot of sense

Dolores was often overlooked by her family, given she was the literal "listener" of the family, and she mentions in the songs that she hears things, but nobody reacts to it. It's quiet possible she tried to bring Bruno up only to be ignored or hushed by Abuela or Pepa becuase well, we don't talk about Bruno. I'd give up trying to tell someone info if they kept ignoring or blowing me off too.

I have noise sensitivity and the way she acts is extremely accurate. The way she flinches, the way she squeaks instead of putting emotion in her voice in order to convey meaning. And even the way she smiles like she’s having fun but is actually in pain.

It’s getting better though! I normally have to wear these big bulky headphones, but I’ve been taking this new vitamin my mom has me on and I’ve started to wear these small earbuds called “Loop” around the house.

@@kkcake5771 its sad because they made him the way he is by begging him to use his gift and then getting mad at hearing about the futures they asked to see and blaming him for it instead of blaming themselves for their lack of self control in asking. bruno was alienated by doing what people asked him to do and then getting villainized for it. even if he may have occasionally just tried to warn people about worrisome futures out of concern for the individual, they decided to take it as just him being a bearer of bad news, since people dont need to be "warned" that something good is going to happen; making every out of the blue encounter with him probably a negative one.

I didn't think it was that sinister. I was thinking more in the lines of Dolores keeping to herself, trying not to become family's next scapegoat. Her powers, much like her uncles, give her (often unwanted) insight into whats going on around her and in other peoples lives. Dolores has more generous opinion of Brunos power than the rest of the family and recognises he's basically getting slandered. She uses her power for manipulation instead of openly working to fix things so she can avoid responsibility.
I would also add another thing to consider is human nature. He spins it like all of her decisions are made intentionally in a vacuum but as people we all have needs and work in community (or we used to). For example, one is to be affirmed by your group so that your needs DO get met. Dolores not talking about the cracks isn't out of a desire for the magic to end but in compliance with not talking about what the matriarch doesn't want to acknowledge. Her not sticking up for Maribel is just weakness, NOT conspiracy. Another is the look she gives Isabelle over her "boyfriend"? It's already well established that she's jealous of her because of him and to find out that something in that relationship is not to Isabelle's liking makes her happy. That IS jealousy in action, being happy when the person "fails".
You're right, she probably knows every secret in the entire town, and even if someone didn't have anything to hide, she could just make something up and people would believe her because of her power

I like to think that Dolores’ room is completely soundproof. So it would be easier for her to sleep at night. It would be a nice theory but she stated that, “I heard Luisa’s eye twitch all night.” This means it’s most likely not soundproof. But the question remains, what kind of gimmick would Dolores’ room have?
In a tweet by Encanto's director, can't remember his name off the top of my head, he stated that Dolores' room, "Def has some soundproofing in there!" So, it could be that she can't hear the townsfolk at night, but she could still hear *some* of her family members. Note how she doesn't hear Alma talking about how she's worried about the Miracle at night after Antonio's ceremony, but she is able to hear Luisa's eye twitching.... or she could have just been asleep when Alma was talking. I was looking for a comment that talked about her room!

To be honest, one of the lyrics in "We don't talk about Bruno", Dolores sections reads "It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling" It shows that perhaps the reason why she covered up Bruno's persisting in the walls is because she was sympathetic due to her uncle's gift causing problems

yeah but at the same time, I feel like Dolores was jealous of Mirabel and that led to her not being very fond of her. So I think that is why she couldn't keep the secret about Mirabel destroying the gift... like think about it, she probably knows most of the secrets of the whole town right? Fun Fact: there was a cut piece of the movie where once the house collapses, everyone looses their powers. But the one it affect most was Camilo. It was planned for him to have a full emotional breakdown and existential crisis because he has been pretending to be other people his whole life to make them happy and help them. Now that that is gone, he literally has no idea who he is anymore. You can hear a little bit of him panicking in the background during the collapse scene. It was cut because the whole sequence took 5 minutes in total and they felt it took too much time away from Mirabel's tragic and sad moment. Though you can still hear him panicking off screen during the scene so it shows they really wanted to develop Camilo's character.

The real villain is the Grandma because she never let go of her sadness and trauma and then passed it on to her children. It’s a story of the cycle of trauma and how if we dont fix our trauma is breeds and fester in our children and grandchildren
The town seemed to be filled with some pretty selfish people until the very end when they help rebuild. Louisa’s song about pressure, their desperate questions about the magic made me think they didn’t serve very much and just let the madrigals do everything for them.
Fun Fact: Isabela also sings “I’m fine” over and over again, in sync with Dolores. Both lines relate to their relationships with Mariano, Dolores is upset that she’ll never be with Mariano, but she has to hide her feelings and act like she’s fine, and Isabela is upset that she is being forced to be with Mariano, but she ALSO has to hide her feelings and act like she’s fine.
i think mat forgot a important argument: when casita reapeared, it did so hapier than ever. not a single frame of the ending shows the building cracking. That's because dolores never acted out against her family. she acted out against the miracle. Casita broke because the madrigal's started some mad beef with eachother, but everything dolores did was so she and her mother and uncle could be freed from an overbaring gift. Why bother to reveal bruno's whereabouts when abuela would just shun him back to exile? why bother to tolerate isabela's bathrovement when she knew it was all a ruse to keep abuela happy? and most important of all: why would she keep her mouth shut about bruno's profecy when she knew the """miracle"""" would likely die if she revealed it in the most hurtfull way possible?
That is a good thought and one I hadn't even remotely considered! I'm wondering if there is an Encanto 2 if there will be new cracks in the house and that Mirabel will be on family repairing duty again. After all, I noticed in the recent movie that the only characters with issues they dove into was Bruno, Mirabel, Abulea, Luisa, and Isabella. They only briefly touched on Peppa and no one else got a good talk about their feelings in detail (Julieta got NO comment on her feelings).
One common thing I noticed about the gifts: they are not exactly what they seem to be at the first glance. Peppa doesn't just control the weather, she actively generates it. Julieta doesn't heal but makes healing food(at least judging by the vials she recovers after Casita breaks down). We never see any dead plants around Isabela and they grow out of nowhere without seed, nutrients or water. Bruno can't actually tell the future but can capture the snippets out of it that are often out of context. Luisa isn't just super strong but also seemingly invincible. Antonio doesn't only speak with animals but also has their unconditional friendship. Camillo shapeshifting completely ignores his original shape and mass. Pretty sure Dolores has some part of her gift that keeps her from going batshit crazy.

I believe I saw that the creators confirmed that Dolores’ room is actually sound proof. So technically hearing the eye twitch all night she probably meant that she heard it all night at the party. But I do agree that Dolores said and kept specific information.

Theory: If you think about it, Dolores is actually seeking the best outcome for the family by getting rid of the powers, I say this because the powers make each family member feel superior/inferior to another thus making them be awful at communicating, which leads to Casita forming cracks and the magic being unstable. By getting rid of the magic it brings everyone to an equal level in all their eyes, this is shown when the only time we see everyone in the family happy (including Dolores) and communicating properly is while they were rebuilding Casita, before that Bruno was lonely living in the walls and not being able to help or be with the rest of the family because they viewed most of his visions as bad omens, another example is that as soon as Antonio got his power he wasn't the one who was getting his stuff from the nursery, it was his mother. But once everyone felt/was equal they all talked and interacted positively with each other, and I don't think one day of house rebuilding will change how they treat each other when they have powers, especially how they view themselves as better then the towns folk, having Casita reside outside outside of the main town area, only interacting for business and arranged marriages, with the exception of flaunting their magic for the town whenever someone comes of age or just in day to day life. Dolores has probably heard a LOT of things she wishes to forget, ranging from people dying painfully to stuff not appropriate for minors to hear. She can hear how broken everyone in the family is treated and knows what the townsfolk actually think of their family, but she didn't know that there was a way to get rid of the magic... until she heard the first crack when Mirabel doesn't get a gift, she is also probably jealous of Mirabel not having a gift based on the one she got. So in conclusion, not only is Dolores the true good guy, but getting rid of the magic was truly the best result and Dolores being sad on the door when the magic returns is because she knows things will return to the way they were before with its return. Sub Theory: Dolores still had incredible hearing even while the magic was gone because she was able to hear Mirabel talking to Mariano about her of over the sound of everyone else rebuilding Casita.
as for your sub theory, i thinking focusing on a specific sound is a skill anyone can learn. similar to how a musician can pick individual instruments out of a song. so while it is abit of movie magic, it's still believable.
Because unlike the rest of the family, who has been brainwashed about gift=awesome, she has the ability to see through the veneer of glorification and truly decipher the various layers, pros and cons of each power. The reason she's not jealous of Camillo's power is, because she wants to be seen for *herself*, not her impersonations of other people. And she loves and cares far too much about Antonino -who also appears to be her best friend- to develop envy towards him.
I literally mentioned this to my husband a couple weeks ago! 😂 What a weird coincidence that she is the one person that would benefit from losing their power!
It also makes sense from her name. In Spanish, the word for pain is “dolor,” and “Dolores” means many pains. Maybe the writers wanted to emphasize Dolores’ pain from her miracle.

I thought she learned how to control the weather at the end of the movie because of her dancing while it's snowing. or maybe it was to show she is happy to not have to suppress all her emotions/moods anymore. I haven't watched the movie to many times so idk
Technically if she learns how to control her emotions she can control the weather. Abuela even instructed her once to make it clear or rain and she did.

@Joshkid 2000 I don't think the Casita is the one that controls the miracle, rather, the miracle controls the Casita. The Casita has been shown to care about the family, so it's very unlikely that it would do this on purpose.

I think the magic and Casita are like partners in crime and the reason miribel didn't get a gift because the magic was getting manipulated by Dolores but you know since the Casita only interacted with abuela and miribel so far that the Casita couldn't say anything

I'm surprised that you haven't mentioned that Dolores also straight up lies when she tells Mirabel that nobody but her is worried about the magic, when a few moments earlier, Abuela is standing at her open window talking about being worried about the magic disappearing. You mean to tell me Dolores heard Luisa's eye twitching, but not Abuela saying "dang this thing worries me" out in the open?
I just thought of something... What if Deloris didn't tell about Bruno to protect the village? Hear me out, Deloris was probably a child when Bruno so she didn't really know him nun of the kids really didn't know him but she heard what he was like when the adults and towns people told her. There are also many times in the movie were she trys to point to Mirabelle that he's still here. Like in the we don't talk about Bruno song she says to Mirabella that she can always hear him muttering and mubbling. She also says that she can hear someone talking in the walls.
I personally feel like even if she actually wasn’t, Dolores was trying to help Bruno by not telling the family about him not leaving. Abuela made it clear that she didn’t think Bruno loved the family during the fight scene, and the townspeople clearly feared him because of his “gift”. In the song We Don’t Talk About Bruno, most verses either blame or villainies him for the future that he didn’t decide, only predicted. Dolores wasn’t mad at Bruno while sung about her forbidden love, she was just sad that was how the future looked. She didn’t seem to blame Bruno for that at all. Pepa on the other hand was so used to getting mad at Bruno for his visions, that she ended up blaming him for something he didn’t even use his power for. Camilo just described him as a villain (the appearance of one at least). She probably heard so much hate about her uncle that she loved that when she realized he was gone but not gone, she didn’t want to tell anyone in fear he would continue suffering.
I agree I thought for a while Abuela was the villain because she was so controlling and didn’t realize what she was doing to her family to die her emotional miopía and fears but she saw the errors of her way with Mirabel in the river
Camilo was only 5 when bruno disappear so probably doesn't remember him and uses the tales around the village as his only reference. Personally while I think that bruno did have a vision about dolores love being promised to another, i don't think he ever told her about that as she was only 12 when he disappeared, and what kind of adult tells a child something like that. more than likely she simply overheard the details of the vision with her super hearing.
Dolores' problem is that she is a good listener but no one listens to her. She's the only one singing in present tense of Bruno. She literally sings 'I can hear him now'! And what would've happened, if she told everybody about Bruno? He would've lost his family. Yes, his last 10 years or so were miserable. But at least he had his family to keep him going on

I heard/read a theory that the family convinced her she was hearing rats in the walls instead. When she tells Mirabel about Louisa she also slips it that the rats in the walls are talking about it too.
I use to think Dolores was quiet because the sound of her own voice was too loud for her, but a therapist on tiktok did a quick read/take on the family and theorized that Dolores was actually quiet because growing up with her powers would lead her to unintentionally reveal things others didn't want so there was a good chance she was constantly told to shut up or be quiet about things.
during that very song she tries to tell people that she can here him and is talked over by Isabella telling Mirabella to be quiet during the dinner. She tries to tell people, but they just don't listen to her.
Actually, the first time mirabel sees the cracks, Dolores can't hear it. The doors flashing means that their gift is temporarily faded, meaning that everybody temporarily lost their gift. After Luisa's song, "Surface Pressure", she says that when Mirabel saw the cracks, she felt weak. This also gives a sign that they temporarily lost their gifts. So with that cracks thing and Dolores not sticking up for her, it's logical that she wouldn't since she couldn't hear it
I like the fact that Luisa feels weak since her powers are always on/she can't control their intensity so when they temporarily faded she was the only one who felt the loss cause she felt weak. It only flickered for a few seconds. Isabella wouldn't feel it unless she was trying to make a plant when it was flickering. Camillo wouldn't feel it unless he was shape-shifting when it happened. Julieta wouldn't feel it unless her food didn't heal someone in front of her. Antonio wouldn't feel it unless he was mid conversation with an animal For Pepa we see when she's happy the cloud goes and of course she's happy at her sons ceremony so she wouldn't notice she can't make clouds now Dolores was still in a noisy environment and it was a few seconds. You don't notice what you don't hear. Especially in a few seconds whilst still being surrounded by a lot of noise with roaring animals and a ceremony. Luisa could feel it since her powers are always on so at that moment she felt weak cause her body couldn't support her muscled body since it lost its strength
One problems though - as far as we're aware, the whole "powers temporarily fade" thing is fairly new. Bruno had been patching cracks for years, so if the powers were temporarily lost EVERY time the cracks appeared, by the time the events of the movie occurred, it'd be seen as a normal glitch in the system that occasionally happened and no one would be freaking out about it. The panic that ensued means that the family DIDN'T always lose their powers temporarily whenever the walls began to crack. Just look at how Luisa reacted to feeling weak after she spoke with Mirabel, if that were the norm for her, she'd not react that way. Will also point out - we only ever saw evidence that Luisa was having issues with her powers prior to the dinner, and then afterwards we saw Camilo have trouble controlling his shapeshifting. But that was the extent of it. Especially prior to the dinner, we've got no evidence that Dolores, even during the events of the movie, was having any trouble. If she did, she casually ignored it and failed to mention it. So either she was in perfect position to hear the cracks at least at SOME point in her life, and just failed to mention them, or she WAS losing her gift for a short while on a fairly regular basis, and again failed to mention it - even when everyone was freaking out about the miracle dying. Either way, she is deliberately hiding important information about the magic dying.
In the scene in We Dont talk about Bruno when they are setting up the table you can see Dolores actually side eyeing her family and then knocking on the wall where Bruno lives when she turns around in the dance. Dolores' room is also right next to Bruno's secret entrance in the painting. Finally, and this might be a stretch, Dolores only has good hearing unlike her brother who can talk to animals. So when she's saying she can "hear the rats talking in the walls" shes not actually referring to the rats talking, but to Bruno her uncle talking to the rats in the walls (and by compassion calling her Tio a rat lmao) Edit: Also if you noticed in We dont Talk About Bruno, Bruno only shows up in the BG when its Dorores' verse to sing. Not anyone else's. He's on the 2nd floor bopping away to his diss soundtrack
I wouldn't say she was calling Bruno a rat, think she meant that the rats were talking (squeaking) in the walls. And since she hears Bruno talking to them, that's probably why she says the rats are talking (instead of squeaking).
Nah I think she just means she hears the rats squeaking. Plus yeah she knew Bruno was there, she announces that multiple time, but she'd know he's hiding and it seems like she just let him vibe. I took her knocking in secret like that as her telling him "It's time for dinner, join us" since she would've heard him eating near the family.
I always though Dolores didn't mention Bruno in the walls because at one point she probably did talk about but then her family gaslit her into believing it was just rats. She even says it to Mirabel "The only one worried about the magic is you, and the rats talking inside the walls" Dolores can't understand animals so she has to have been told by someone that when she heard Bruno it was actually rats
Yeah, I couldn't quite connect the dots in this theory. Her being impulsive could be a reasonable excuse for blurting out during the family dinner. Her hearing is so good that she knows about every secret in the village, how then is she supposed to know who's in on the secret and who isn't? Not being able to keep a secret could be a subconscious way of destressing; instead of continuously deciding which secrets to keep and/or who to tell them to she is just telling everyone about everything. If that is the case, her family then going to her to 'spy' on others in the village - I mean, I don't think Mariano meant for Dolores to hear that he wants five babies - would not be a help.
Well i think they dont talk about bruno because mentioning him upsets the grandma. At first we think its because she hates him, but by the end of the movie we realize its probably because she misses him or resents him "leaving". So i assumed it was the same for delores. She was told not to talk about him, so they dont.
I think that whenever Bruno needs food. Dolores gave food to him. And also to keep too many hate away from Bruno , she hid the secret that he was in the wall
something he didn’t talk about either is how on everyone’s doors (except dolores and bruno) they are happy and smiling, while dolores and bruno are distressed and upset, showing how their “gifts” are more distressing and difficult to live with.

im just surprised she can hear anything at all. if she can hear an eye twitch then surely she could hear everyone in the village moving around and making sound, therefore she would hear all of the whitenoise from literally everywhere.
The brain usually “tunes out” the excess sound, this is why you can hold a conversation in a loud train station (keep in mind if it is too loud it won’t) this is probably also increased so that it doesn’t hurt that much
I feel like I should add that Dolores isn't the only one singing the "I'm Fine" lines. Isabela is also singing it with almost the exact same expression. Just one of those interesting little Parallels.
EVERYONE was singing some version of "I'm fine" in constant repetition at some point, scared of what would happen if they let the facade slip for even a moment.
Dolores has always been overlooked, so she might be used to it. She thinks Seeing her love interest being stolen wouldn’t be a big deal her witnessing and hence says I’m fine. Isabella however, didn’t want Mariano and marriage is forever and she doesn’t know if she can do it. And hence says I’ll be fine

"The only one worried about the magic is you." That line triggered me especially since abuela was literally begging her dead husband for help conserving the magic the night before. Wouldn't Dolores have heard that? Also, its established that she has heard Bruno in the walls, wouldn't she have heard him worrying as well? I love Dolores but it seemed like the writers wanted her to be an antagonist.
when I first heard of Dolores' hearing, I felt so bad for her. I have extremely sensitive hearing and just imagining how bad it must be for her is legitimately painful
Trust me, it's as bad as it sounds. Auditory hypersensitivity. I have it. Imagine being awakened by the sound of snow falling. It isn't enjoyable! It sounds like the sky decided to drop champagne glasses on the ground. Until there is a nice, soft blanket of snow on the ground, it drives me nuts.
That sounds like auditory processing disorder to me. That's not the same as super good hearing, although someone who has one tends to have the other too. Dolores obvs has amazing hearing but isnt necessarily unable to tune it out
Dolores would have been a great villain: -Solid motivation -Good reveal - a great mirror to the protagonist: the one who wants to have a miracle vs the one who doesn't want to have a miracle - Could literally blackmail anyone on the village to do her biding
But this movie doesn't NEED a villain, which is one of the things that makes it so great I don't get why people are so obsessed with finding the secret villain of Encanto, or trying to force a villain into a sequel or spinoff

That concept of Bruno's foresight being not set in stone would exonerate Bruno, and even pull him back into the limelight because... you know, his power suddenly isn't a curse so much as a suggestion.
definitly, she keeps many many many secrets and had to learn from a young age which ones can be told and which ones cant. she was definitely protecting him but she didn't break the magic,the families dysfunction brought it down

At first, I also wondered why Dolores didn't say anything about Bruno, but after having watched the movie numerous times, I feel like she kept the secret of Bruno still living in the house as a way to protect him, because honestly, what would the family have even done if they DID know Bruno was still there? I saw that as Dolores protecting Bruno the same way Bruno was trying to protect Mirabel. I love the character of Dolores and still don't really see her as a villain, but this was an interesting theory regardless.

It's also a question of who would believe a kid/teenager that someone is living inside the walls of the house? No one even knows there space enough for that, and she would have been young when Bruno left.
Well I mean they did forgive him immediately without questioning at the end of the movie. Why not whilst growing up? What difference happens other then the house falling apart? None that I saw. But this is just my personal opinion, and I only watched the movie once with a friend so I'm not a crazy super fan like most

The way I interpreted it, the reason they forgave him at the end of the movie was because Abuela had learned to let go of the unrealistic expectations she had set on the rest of the family to be perfect, and she could finally see her son as just being her son, instead of only seeing how he made the family look bad. Casita falling apart was a symbol of how the family had to start over and build a new foundation based on how everyone was valuable as simply a person, not for their gifts or what they could do to "earn" the miracle. That's why I don't think they would have forgiven him when Dolores was a child; Abuela hadn't yet learned the lesson.
Along with Dolores having a sad look on the main door of the house at the end, if you look at her own door, she has a sad and/or surprised look on her face, like she heard something she didn’t want to know

As Screen Junkies mentioned in Encanto's Honest Trailer, Dolores has super hearing in a house with two married couples. i.e. she hears *all* of _that._ Not only that, but given the potency of her power, she likely hears the private affairs of a significant number of the families in town. If that won't drive a person insane, I don't know what would.
Dolores’s gift is an actual disorder called hyperacusis, a literal disorder. Imagine getting a one in a million of getting a superpower and you get a disorder dialed up to 20
Also Luisa says she felt weak when Mirabel saw the cracks, Delores probably also felt the quiet. Whereas the others won't notice their lack of powers without actively using them (unless she's actively making flowers, Isabella won't notice that she can't). Pepa also wouldn't notice cause she's happy at that time so would have 'clear skies'

I never noticed her sad face at the end, how tragic. It makes sense though that she would be pushing the plot forward. I never understood why she would blurt out the vision of the house falling because of Mirabel, meanwhile, she can keep Bruno a secret for a decade. With a gift like that I imagine she would have to be good at keeping secrets as she holds everyone's. But yeah, she was definitely shading Isabella over the Mariano thing.
honestly if you look at Antonio's face on the door. He has the same face as dolores so we might think they are making a sad face but its actually their lips shape, they have pretty plump lips and you can see it curv up to a smile
Fun fact: When Camillo coughs while shapeshifting in this order; Mirabel, Bruno, and cross-eyed himself, he did that to tell everyone that mirabel actually was in Bruno’s vision. The last phase of him (the cross-eyed him) means that they will be doomed if mirabel actually should’ve left the whole madrigal alone.

I liked the theory, my one sticking point is: Matt meant antagonist not villain. The definition of 'villain' is actually for antagonist and antagonist =/= villain.
It was confirmed by the makers of the movie that although she doesn't have as much control over her hearing as she'd like, it definitely can turn off sometimes. and there is a soundproof space somewhere in her room.

Dolores definitely knew that Isabella did not want Mariano, but couldn't say no because 1. Abuela seemed delighted with Mariano 2. Mariano appeared to be the biggest catch in the village - sensitive, a true gentleman, handsome, and dumb as a rock. Dolores also knew that Luisa was overwhelmed, but felt "worthless if she couldn't be of service". Basically Dolores is realising that she, Isabella and Luisa are about to go the same way as Bruno, and she just cannot hold it in anymore.
The reason Dolores didn’t tell anyone about Bruno is because she was trying to protect him from abuela because she know that if abuela found out about him still being there before the character development she has at the end of the movie she would be angry with him not to mention that everyone in town hates Bruno as well and would likely still resent him upon his return

then why didn't she do the same with mirabel during the the dinner table scene that explanation solves the problem with bruno but why didn't she do the same with mirabel and if that secret is what broke her then why didn't she mention that bruno was living inside the walls it makes no sense and just feels like a big plot hole if dolores wasn't actively sabotaging the magic but that's just my opinion
I've only seen the movie once but one thing I noticed right away: she can hear stuff so far away, so when Abuela was praying/talking about her worries out her window and Mirabel heard her, I was like "oh Dolores will be able to corroborate Mirabel's story this time". But then she says "no one's worried about the magic but you" I was like what. She could hear Luisa's eye twitching all night but didn't hear that? I was sus of her since then. Though on the door when I look closely, the corners of her mouth are upward, I think she just has a pouty shape to her mouth so it was hard to tell.
She might have been exaggerating the "all night" part and had fallen asleep by then. If not, she does hear everything, so she may not have tuned into Abuela's praying. Maybe Mariano was reciting his poetry around that time so she was listening to him.
I hope Dolores’s room is actually a sound proof room where she cannot hear anything when inside. But I also hope… when she was younger… she did not hear her parents, Julieta and Augustine and everyone else in town making babies…

The problem with this is that Dolores seems genuinely scared and worried about all of the prophecy stuff at the dinner table. Maybe it's not Bruno whose true gift is ack-ting but Dolores.
In "We don't talk about Bruno" Dolores sang "Bruno lived in fear......." Past tense and then she sings "I can always hear him sort of sort of stuttering and mumbling" present tense. As in she is admitting to actively listening to him. This includes talking to the rats and eating along with them just behind the wall. Even if she didn't want to expose him, she could hand him a fruit basket here and there.
She probably did, because if you follow this theory, she would have to keep Bruno alive in order to make sure Mirabel would later meet him and try to envision again, leading forward into chaos.
In "we don't talk about Bruno", you can actually hear Isabela and Dolores singing "I'm fine" together, my interpretation is that both of them were not satisfied with their current life, but still had to live a life that Abuela wanted them to live

I imagine with all that noise Dolores's brain would naturally develop according to her overall situation. like, one of my headcannons is that to cope with all the sound Dolores's brain is slowly evolving to not use hearing to sense potential danger. like, if a bear was running up behind her she'd detect its growling and stuff but wouldn't detect danger until she saw it with her own two eyes. another headcannon is that she can automatically focus her hearing on what she needs and/or wants to hear. but of course its still a lot so the background noise is still very loud for her. also if the miracle is revealed to be like, a magic spirit that was possessing the candle but now just flat out possesses the house itself or something, I would love to see them(btw I'm imagining them to go by they/her pronouns) ask for a pen and paper and then use it to make a list of bad gifts: weather controling emotions, super hearing all the gifts with terrible side effects that just make their lives flat out miserable from the gifts alone. reason why I didn't use Brunos gift as an example is because his gift was bad because of the people around him, not the gift itself.
Just realised. When she sings the phrase "Betrothed to another", that's the first time we hear her talk or sing louder than a whisper. For her, that's her screaming from the rooftops
Speaking as someone who lives with sound-sensitivity, there's no way Dolores would be as functional as she is if she were dealing with that level of sound sensitivity. She covers her ears at the celebration with no more urgency than someone with a normal range of hearing might. A more satisfying answer is that Dolores, like everyone else in her family, is fundamentally broken in a specific way that relates to their powers and the expectation they place on them. Isabella creates beauty, but she is burdened by the perfection of the role this creates for her. Luisa suffers from self-loathing and anxiety over her inability to do everything for everyone. Julieta is a people pleaser, and Pepa even more so, because the village depends on them for health and crops respectively. We don't know much about Camillo other than that he's a clown without much in the way of filters - but I'd bet if he got a song we'd hear all about his fear of intimacy and how he wished someone would take him seriously. Antonio almost certainly would have grown up to feel helpless and depressed knowing that some of his animal friends must die so that others may live - maybe in his spinoff series he'll become a magical ecovillain, taking on the corporations that damage the lands around the encanto. And of course there's Bruno, but we don't talk about him so lets move on to Dolores. Dolores is burdened with every secret, every unhappy truth, every sadness of every dweller in the encanto. The encanto surely has, if not therapists, then social roles that serve a similar need: hairdressers, bartenders, close friends. Imagine hearing every moment of vulnerability. How heavy must her heart be, burdened with all the hidden sadness. Even within her own family - she hears those cracks, just as she heard Abuela that night asking her Pedro for help. We know Dolores can her Bruno in the walls (she sings "I can always hear him" present tense, contrasted with the later line "Always left the family fumbling", past tense) and she knows her mother freaks out if anyone mentions his name. She's wanted to tell the family about this since Mirabel's ceremony, but has been greeted with literal storm clouds if she tries to bring it up. She, like the two sisters, is at the end of her rope. She knows its all about to come crumbling down and she just can't take the adults not talking about it for one more second. She has to tell someone. And so the prophesy comes to pass.
Camilo's problem is that it seems that his gift of transformation is to impersonate/replace people (In the song "The Family Madrigal", Camilo gives a pillow to a woman who seems to have stayed up all night taking care of her baby and transforms into said woman to supplant her and take care of the baby while the mother sleeps for a moment) Which can be scary, could he transform into someone deceased to give his or her grieving family some comfort?
Weirdly while Dolores looks the saddest on the door at the end, several of the family members look less than ecstatic - Isabella looking the least happy after Dolores…
with the eyes down but a smile and the eyebrows in that position that Isabella is wearing represents contentment and/or relief not sadness. In this context it would really represent more about her being happy she could let go of being perfect and she can be herself. Luisa also has a similar look for not having to hold the burden for everyone. For sure Dolores is the only one not looking happy.
To be honest I think matpat is wrong on this one. I think that dolores says everything at the proposal dinner because she’s scared of what mirabel finding the vision could mean and because of her sensory overload. Also to me Dolores looked like she was breathing a sigh of relief that all that is over.
one thing missed though, although many places say Delores is the one saying "I'm Fine". If you watch very closely during the song, Isabel is the one mouthing "I'm fine"

As a latina, Dolores is a common name, it's common naming your children as a feeling (Esperanza, Soledad, Dolores, etc which mean Hope, Loneliness and Pain) It's associated with what the mother feels during her pregnancy, not about the kid in it of itself. But yeah, they did in on porpouse.

I always felt like she was trying to get Mirabel to take action from her little rap in We Don't Talk About Bruno. The way it ends with her pointedly asking, "Do you understand?" just makes me feel like she was relaying important information, rather than gossip.

I think she's always hoping people will pick up on little cues like she does. "I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling" is present tense. She explicitly told Mirabel that Bruno is here, currently, in the present, and Mirabel just didn't pick up on it because she was inundated with so much information at once. She's looking directly at Mariano over the wall in her second verse, making it clear that *he* is the man of her dreams, but no one notices. Even while she's singing, "and I'm fine, and I'm fine, and I'm fine, I'm fine," so is Isabela at the same time. Dolores KNOWS that Isabela doesn't want to marry Mariano, but no one listens to either woman about what they want.
She's also the only one besides Isa who doesn't outright badmouth Bruno. The moment at the proposal just seemed like a moment of crisis. A secret that was too big for her, and when she whispered to her brother, unable to hold it in, chaos ensued. Everyone talking at once, Luisa crying, rats everywhere, and every little noise is multiplied by a thousand for Dolores and she just loses it. It looked like ADHD sensory overload. It was just too much for her.
In short, I don't think she's actually withholding any information, I think people just aren't listening.

I didn't think it was that sinister. I was thinking more in the lines of Dolores keeping to herself, trying not to become family's next scapegoat. Her powers, much like her uncles, give her (often unwanted) insight into whats going on around her and in other peoples lives. Dolores has more generous opinion of Brunos power than the rest of the family and recognises he's basically getting slandered. She uses her power for manipulation instead of openly working to fix things so she can avoid responsibility.

Fun Fact: there was a cut piece of the movie where once the house collapses, everyone looses their powers. But the one it affect most was Camilo. It was planned for him to have a full emotional breakdown and existential crisis because he has been pretending to be other people his whole life to make them happy and help them. Now that that is gone, he literally has no idea who he is anymore. You can hear a little bit of him panicking in the background during the collapse scene. It was cut because the whole sequence took 5 minutes in total and they felt it took too much time away from Mirabel's tragic and sad moment. Though you can still hear him panicking off screen during the scene so it shows they really wanted to develop Camilo's character.

The town seemed to be filled with some pretty selfish people until the very end when they help rebuild. Louisa’s song about pressure, their desperate questions about the magic made me think they didn’t serve very much and just let the madrigals do everything for them.

when casita reapeared, it did so hapier than ever. not a single frame of the ending shows the building cracking. That's because dolores never acted out against her family. she acted out against the miracle. Casita broke because the madrigal's started some mad beef with eachother, but everything dolores did was so she and her mother and uncle could be freed from an overbaring gift.
Why bother to reveal bruno's whereabouts when abuela would just shun him back to exile? why bother to tolerate isabela's bathrovement when she knew it was all a ruse to keep abuela happy? and most important of all: why would she keep her mouth shut about bruno's profecy when she knew the """miracle"""" would likely die if she revealed it in the most hurtfull way possible?

Peppa doesn't just control the weather, she actively generates it.

Theory: If you think about it, Dolores is actually seeking the best outcome for the family by getting rid of the powers, I say this because the powers make each family member feel superior/inferior to another thus making them be awful at communicating, which leads to Casita forming cracks and the magic being unstable. By getting rid of the magic it brings everyone to an equal level in all their eyes, this is shown when the only time we see everyone in the family happy (including Dolores) and communicating properly is while they were rebuilding Casita, before that Bruno was lonely living in the walls and not being able to help or be with the rest of the family because they viewed most of his visions as bad omens, another example is that as soon as Antonio got his power he wasn't the one who was getting his stuff from the nursery, it was his mother. But once everyone felt/was equal they all talked and interacted positively with each other, and I don't think one day of house rebuilding will change how they treat each other when they have powers, especially how they view themselves as better then the towns folk, having Casita reside outside outside of the main town area, only interacting for business and arranged marriages, with the exception of flaunting their magic for the town whenever someone comes of age or just in day to day life. Dolores has probably heard a LOT of things she wishes to forget, ranging from people dying painfully to stuff not appropriate for minors to hear. She can hear how broken everyone in the family is treated and knows what the townsfolk actually think of their family, but she didn't know that there was a way to get rid of the magic... until she heard the first crack when Mirabel doesn't get a gift, she is also probably jealous of Mirabel not having a gift based on the one she got. So in conclusion, not only is Dolores the true good guy, but getting rid of the magic was truly the best result and Dolores being sad on the door when the magic returns is because she knows things will return to the way they were before with its return.
Sub Theory: Dolores still had incredible hearing even while the magic was gone because she was able to hear Mirabel talking to Mariano about her of over the sound of everyone else rebuilding Casita.

I'm surprised that you haven't mentioned that Dolores also straight up lies when she tells Mirabel that nobody but her is worried about the magic, when a few moments earlier, Abuela is standing at her open window talking about being worried about the magic disappearing. You mean to tell me Dolores heard Luisa's eye twitching, but not Abuela saying "dang this thing worries me" out in the open?

I just thought of something... What if Deloris didn't tell about Bruno to protect the village? Hear me out, Deloris was probably a child when Bruno so she didn't really know him nun of the kids really didn't know him but she heard what he was like when the adults and towns people told her. There are also many times in the movie were she trys to point to Mirabelle that he's still here. Like in the we don't talk about Bruno song she says to Mirabella that she can always hear him muttering and mubbling. She also says that she can hear someone talking in the walls.

I personally feel like even if she actually wasn’t, Dolores was trying to help Bruno by not telling the family about him not leaving. Abuela made it clear that she didn’t think Bruno loved the family during the fight scene, and the townspeople clearly feared him because of his “gift”. In the song We Don’t Talk About Bruno, most verses either blame or villainies him for the future that he didn’t decide, only predicted. Dolores wasn’t mad at Bruno while sung about her forbidden love, she was just sad that was how the future looked. She didn’t seem to blame Bruno for that at all. Pepa on the other hand was so used to getting mad at Bruno for his visions, that she ended up blaming him for something he didn’t even use his power for. Camilo just described him as a villain (the appearance of one at least). She probably heard so much hate about her uncle that she loved that when she realized he was gone but not gone, she didn’t want to tell anyone in fear he would continue suffering.
I agree I thought for a while Abuela was the villain because she was so controlling and didn’t realize what she was doing to her family to die her emotional miopía and fears but she saw the errors of her way with Mirabel in the river

I agree. My daughters favorite character from the movie is Dolores. It makes sense that Dolores isn’t a villain and won’t ever betray her family.
Camilo was only 5 when bruno disappear so probably doesn't remember him and uses the tales around the village as his only reference. Personally while I think that bruno did have a vision about dolores love being promised to another, i don't think he ever told her about that as she was only 12 when he disappeared, and what kind of adult tells a child something like that. more than likely she simply overheard the details of the vision with her super hearing.
Dolores' problem is that she is a good listener but no one listens to her. She's the only one singing in present tense of Bruno. She literally sings 'I can hear him now'!
And what would've happened, if she told everybody about Bruno? He would've lost his family. Yes, his last 10 years or so were miserable. But at least he had his family to keep him going on

Same here, she actively sympathises with him in her verse, "it's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling, always left abuela and the family fumbling, grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand", she also has a humbling gift (the super hearing), and gets that Bruno couldn't fully say what any prophecy was, since they were so vague.

It’s possible that Dolores tried to say something about Bruno being in the walls, only to get “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”’d every time, so she gave up.
She has super hearing though,someone would atleast hear her out.
She does literally sing "I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling" during the song". The use of "can" here is really important because it implies present tense. The line directly preceding it - Grew to live in fear of his stuttering and stumbling - and a couple lines after - Always left Abuela and the family fumbling grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand - it's back to past tense. It's definitely a very intentional choice of words
I heard/read a theory that the family convinced her she was hearing rats in the walls instead. When she tells Mirabel about Louisa she also slips it that the rats in the walls are talking about it too.
I use to think Dolores was quiet because the sound of her own voice was too loud for her, but a therapist on tiktok did a quick read/take on the family and theorized that Dolores was actually quiet because growing up with her powers would lead her to unintentionally reveal things others didn't want so there was a good chance she was constantly told to shut up or be quiet about things.
during that very song she tries to tell people that she can here him and is talked over by Isabella telling Mirabella to be quiet during the dinner. She tries to tell people, but they just don't listen to her.
Actually, the first time mirabel sees the cracks, Dolores can't hear it. The doors flashing means that their gift is temporarily faded, meaning that everybody temporarily lost their gift. After Luisa's song, "Surface Pressure", she says that when Mirabel saw the cracks, she felt weak. This also gives a sign that they temporarily lost their gifts. So with that cracks thing and Dolores not sticking up for her, it's logical that she wouldn't since she couldn't hear it
I like the fact that Luisa feels weak since her powers are always on/she can't control their intensity so when they temporarily faded she was the only one who felt the loss cause she felt weak. It only flickered for a few seconds.
Isabella wouldn't feel it unless she was trying to make a plant when it was flickering.
Camillo wouldn't feel it unless he was shape-shifting when it happened.
Julieta wouldn't feel it unless her food didn't heal someone in front of her.
Antonio wouldn't feel it unless he was mid conversation with an animal
For Pepa we see when she's happy the cloud goes and of course she's happy at her sons ceremony so she wouldn't notice she can't make clouds now
Dolores was still in a noisy environment and it was a few seconds. You don't notice what you don't hear. Especially in a few seconds whilst still being surrounded by a lot of noise with roaring animals and a ceremony.
Luisa could feel it since her powers are always on so at that moment she felt weak cause her body couldn't support her muscled body since it lost its strength

One problems though - as far as we're aware, the whole "powers temporarily fade" thing is fairly new. Bruno had been patching cracks for years, so if the powers were temporarily lost EVERY time the cracks appeared, by the time the events of the movie occurred, it'd be seen as a normal glitch in the system that occasionally happened and no one would be freaking out about it. The panic that ensued means that the family DIDN'T always lose their powers temporarily whenever the walls began to crack. Just look at how Luisa reacted to feeling weak after she spoke with Mirabel, if that were the norm for her, she'd not react that way.
Will also point out - we only ever saw evidence that Luisa was having issues with her powers prior to the dinner, and then afterwards we saw Camilo have trouble controlling his shapeshifting. But that was the extent of it. Especially prior to the dinner, we've got no evidence that Dolores, even during the events of the movie, was having any trouble. If she did, she casually ignored it and failed to mention it.
So either she was in perfect position to hear the cracks at least at SOME point in her life, and just failed to mention them, or she WAS losing her gift for a short while on a fairly regular basis, and again failed to mention it - even when everyone was freaking out about the miracle dying. Either way, she is deliberately hiding important information about the magic dying.
Counter thought, she would've still known SOMETHING happened because she would've lost her ability to hear everything

In the scene in We Dont talk about Bruno when they are setting up the table you can see Dolores actually side eyeing her family and then knocking on the wall where Bruno lives when she turns around in the dance. Dolores' room is also right next to Bruno's secret entrance in the painting. Finally, and this might be a stretch, Dolores only has good hearing unlike her brother who can talk to animals. So when she's saying she can "hear the rats talking in the walls" shes not actually referring to the rats talking, but to Bruno her uncle talking to the rats in the walls (and by compassion calling her Tio a rat lmao)
Edit: Also if you noticed in We dont Talk About Bruno, Bruno only shows up in the BG when its Dorores' verse to sing. Not anyone else's. He's on the 2nd floor bopping away to his diss soundtrack

Yeah, I couldn't quite connect the dots in this theory. Her being impulsive could be a reasonable excuse for blurting out during the family dinner. Her hearing is so good that she knows about every secret in the village, how then is she supposed to know who's in on the secret and who isn't? Not being able to keep a secret could be a subconscious way of destressing; instead of continuously deciding which secrets to keep and/or who to tell them to she is just telling everyone about everything. If that is the case, her family then going to her to 'spy' on others in the village - I mean, I don't think Mariano meant for Dolores to hear that he wants five babies - would not be a help.

At first we think its because she hates him, but by the end of the movie we realize its probably because she misses him or resents him "leaving". So i assumed it was the same for delores. She was told not to talk about him, so they dont.

im just surprised she can hear anything at all. if she can hear an eye twitch then surely she could hear everyone in the village moving around and making sound, therefore she would hear all of the whitenoise from literally everywhere.
The brain usually “tunes out” the excess sound, this is why you can hold a conversation in a loud train station (keep in mind if it is too loud it won’t) this is probably also increased so that it doesn’t hurt that much

-Good reveal
- a great mirror to the protagonist: the one who wants to have a miracle vs the one who doesn't want to have a miracle
- Could literally blackmail anyone on the village to do her biding

At first, I also wondered why Dolores didn't say anything about Bruno, but after having watched the movie numerous times, I feel like she kept the secret of Bruno still living in the house as a way to protect him, because honestly, what would the family have even done if they DID know Bruno was still there? I saw that as Dolores protecting Bruno the same way Bruno was trying to protect Mirabel. I love the character of Dolores and still don't really see her as a villain, but this was an interesting theory regardless.

The way I interpreted it, the reason they forgave him at the end of the movie was because Abuela had learned to let go of the unrealistic expectations she had set on the rest of the family to be perfect, and she could finally see her son as just being her son, instead of only seeing how he made the family look bad. Casita falling apart was a symbol of how the family had to start over and build a new foundation based on how everyone was valuable as simply a person, not for their gifts or what they could do to "earn" the miracle. That's why I don't think they would have forgiven him when Dolores was a child; Abuela hadn't yet learned the lesson.
Along with Dolores having a sad look on the main door of the house at the end, if you look at her own door, she has a sad and/or surprised look on her face, like she heard something she didn’t want to know

As Screen Junkies mentioned in Encanto's Honest Trailer, Dolores has super hearing in a house with two married couples. i.e. she hears *all* of _that._ Not only that, but given the potency of her power, she likely hears the private affairs of a significant number of the families in town. Whereas the others won't notice their lack of powers without actively using them (unless she's actively making flowers, Isabella won't notice that she can't). I liked the theory, my one sticking point is: Matt meant antagonist not villain. The definition of 'villain' is actually for antagonist and antagonist =/= villain.

Dolores definitely knew that Isabella did not want Mariano, but couldn't say no because 1. Abuela seemed delighted with Mariano 2. Mariano appeared to be the biggest catch in the village - sensitive, a true gentleman, handsome, and dumb as a rock. Dolores also knew that Luisa was overwhelmed, but felt "worthless if she couldn't be of service". Basically Dolores is realising that she, Isabella and Luisa are about to go the same way as Bruno, and she just cannot hold it in anymore.
The reason Dolores didn’t tell anyone about Bruno is because she was trying to protect him from abuela because she know that if abuela found out about him still being there before the character development she has at the end of the movie she would be angry with him not to mention that everyone in town hates Bruno as well and would likely still resent him upon his return

Yeah, her verse was the most understanding in we don’t talk about Bruno, she understands that they’re predictions that he can’t control. E.g: “It’s a heavy lift with a gift so humbling, always left abuela and the family fumbling, grappling prophecies they couldn’t understand, do you understand?
then why didn't she do the same with mirabel during the the dinner table scene that explanation solves the problem with bruno but why didn't she do the same with mirabel and if that secret is what broke her then why didn't she mention that bruno was living inside the walls it makes no sense and just feels like a big plot hole if dolores wasn't actively sabotaging the magic but that's just my opinion
I've only seen the movie once but one thing I noticed right away: she can hear stuff so far away, so when Abuela was praying/talking about her worries out her window and Mirabel heard her, I was like "oh Dolores will be able to corroborate Mirabel's story this time". But then she says "no one's worried about the magic but you" I was like what. She could hear Luisa's eye twitching all night but didn't hear that? I was sus of her since then.
Though on the door when I look closely, the corners of her mouth are upward, I think she just has a pouty shape to her mouth so it was hard to tell.

Did you notice when Dolores covers her ears when she yells out the secret about Bruno, and because of that it’s another way not hurting her ears.
Them appearing on the front door was meant to resemble that they are now a happy, united family; as opposed to before when they had their pictures on separate doors, were a toxic family, and were each facing their own hardships
The problem with this is that Dolores seems genuinely scared and worried about all of the prophecy stuff at the dinner table. Maybe it's not Bruno whose true gift is ack-ting but Dolores.

In "We don't talk about Bruno" Dolores sang "Bruno lived in fear......." Past tense and then she sings "I can always hear him sort of sort of stuttering and mumbling" present tense. As in she is admitting to actively listening to him. This includes talking to the rats and eating along with them just behind the wall. Even if she didn't want to expose him, she could hand him a fruit basket here and there.

I imagine with all that noise Dolores's brain would naturally develop according to her overall situation. like, one of my headcannons is that to cope with all the sound Dolores's brain is slowly evolving to not use hearing to sense potential danger. like, if a bear was running up behind her she'd detect its growling and stuff but wouldn't detect danger until she saw it with her own two eyes.
another headcannon is that she can automatically focus her hearing on what she needs and/or wants to hear. but of course its still a lot so the background noise is still very loud for her.
also if the miracle is revealed to be like, a magic spirit that was possessing the candle but now just flat out possesses the house itself or something, I would love to see them(btw I'm imagining them to go by they/her pronouns) ask for a pen and paper and then use it to make a list of bad gifts: weather controling emotions, super hearing

Speaking as someone who lives with sound-sensitivity, there's no way Dolores would be as functional as she is if she were dealing with that level of sound sensitivity. She covers her ears at the celebration with no more urgency than someone with a normal range of hearing might. A more satisfying answer is that Dolores, like everyone else in her family, is fundamentally broken in a specific way that relates to their powers and the expectation they place on them. Isabella creates beauty, but she is burdened by the perfection of the role this creates for her. Luisa suffers from self-loathing and anxiety over her inability to do everything for everyone. Julieta is a people pleaser, and Pepa even more so, because the village depends on them for health and crops respectively. We don't know much about Camillo other than that he's a clown without much in the way of filters - but I'd bet if he got a song we'd hear all about his fear of intimacy and how he wished someone would take him seriously. Antonio almost certainly would have grown up to feel helpless and depressed knowing that some of his animal friends must die so that others may live - maybe in his spinoff series he'll become a magical ecovillain, taking on the corporations that damage the lands around the encanto. And of course there's Bruno, but we don't talk about him so lets move on to Dolores.
Dolores is burdened with every secret, every unhappy truth, every sadness of every dweller in the encanto. The encanto surely has, if not therapists, then social roles that serve a similar need: hairdressers, bartenders, close friends. Imagine hearing every moment of vulnerability. How heavy must her heart be, burdened with all the hidden sadness. Even within her own family - she hears those cracks, just as she heard Abuela that night asking her Pedro for help. We know Dolores can her Bruno in the walls (she sings "I can always hear him" present tense, contrasted with the later line "Always left the family fumbling", past tense) and she knows her mother freaks out if anyone mentions his name. She's wanted to tell the family about this since Mirabel's ceremony, but has been greeted with literal storm clouds if she tries to bring it up. She, like the two sisters, is at the end of her rope. She knows its all about to come crumbling down and she just can't take the adults not talking about it for one more second. She has to tell someone. And so the prophesy comes to pass.
Camilo's problem is that it seems that his gift of transformation is to impersonate/replace people (In the song "The Family Madrigal", Camilo gives a pillow to a woman who seems to have stayed up all night taking care of her baby and transforms into said woman to supplant her and take care of the baby while the mother sleeps for a moment) Which can be scary, could he transform into someone deceased to give his or her grieving family some comfort?

Isabella to me looks more relieved than outright happy.
with the eyes down but a smile and the eyebrows in that position that Isabella is wearing represents contentment and/or relief not sadness. In this context it would really represent more about her being happy she could let go of being perfect and she can be herself. Luisa also has a similar look for not having to hold the burden for everyone. For sure Dolores is the only one not looking happy.

To be honest I think matpat is wrong on this one. I think that dolores says everything at the proposal dinner because she’s scared of what mirabel finding the vision could mean and because of her sensory overload. Also to me Dolores looked like she was breathing a sigh of relief that all that is over.
