I think Jack was actually burned at the stake. I mean he's a skeleton(when someone was burned to death all that was left was bones), he has no idea that a modern Christmas is(this happened before the 1800's) and when he enters he's literally burning on fire. Soo ... Idk just an idea
The headless horseman seemed too violent to be Jack. Yes the characters Halloweentown seemed to glory in gore and death but mainly because it's a good way to scare people. Scaring people is what they're all about but not necessarily actually harming them. Remember in "This is Halloween" it says "tender lumpings everywhere, life's no fun without a good scare. THAT'S OUR JOB BUT WE'RE NOT MEAN, IN OUR TOWN OF HALLOWEEN" And while many of the toys jack gave out did chase and terrorize the kids, they didn't actually hurt anyone even if they had the chance (remember the giant snake swallowing the presents and the Christmas tree, but never tried to attack the child.) So, no I don't think Jack was ever a soldier. Jack scared people in a fun way. Which is what Halloween is about. He just didn't understand that Christmas is about a different kind of fun. I don't think Jack was ever actually a living human. If anything he could be called the spirit of Halloween. References to him being dead are not meant to be taken at face value. It's just part of him being a scary figure. The only one in Halloweentown who could be considered dangerous or actually "mean" was Oogie Boogie, and Jack obviously hated him and didn't trust him right from the start.
@saur2244 I specifically said I did not think Jack could have been the headless horseman. The horseman was a spectre devoted to revenge, to taking the heads of others as recompense for the loss of his own head. Obviously a very violent goal I did not say anything about all soldiers loving killing. The fact is there is nothing to suggest Jack or any of the residents of Halloweentown were human. As I stated I believe Jack is the spirit of Halloween. Basically he came into being as the holiday of Halloween developed, it's the customs and traditions of Halloween that make Jack what he is. "The Pumpkin King of Halloween" just as it's the customs and traditions of Christmas that make Santa Claus what he is, or the Easter Bunny what he is. They exist solely because those holidays exist. Trying to give them human origins just seems pointless.
There is actually a theory that Tim Burton meant for Frankenweenie, The Corpse Bride, and The Nightmare Before Christmas to be one story. One reason is because he said “Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. Not necessarily in that order.” Frankenweenie came out in 2012, The Corpse Bride came out in 2005, and The Nightmare Before Christmas came out in 1993. Another reason to believe this is that in Frankenweenie, a boy’s beloved dog dies and he tries to bring him back to life. In The Corpse Bride, Victor receives a gift from Emily (the Corpse Bride) which is the dead version of Victor’s beloved dog, which died when he was a kid. In The Nightmare Before Christmas Jack has his dog which has the same facial structure as the dead version of Victor’s dog in The Corpse Bride. But think what you want, it is just what I believe.
"And since I am dead, I can take off my head, to recite Shakespirian quotation, no animal or man, can SCREAM as i can, with the fury of my re-ci-tations."💀💀💀💀
"But who here would ever understand that the pumpkin king, with his skeleton grin would tire of his crown, if they ever understood....he'd give it all up, if he only could?"
I also agree because Jack used a pumpkin instead of his head occasionally which is a jack-o-lantern AND Stingy Jack has many names one of which was “Jack of the Lantern”
And then he found Halloween Town and it became his home. Then he eventually lost his memory of finding it which is why he doesn’t recognize the doors later.
yeah, he doesn't have a soul, so he have to stay in the halloween town, and Sally too, bc she wasn't even human, but a creation, she was made, so she doesn't have a soul, even if she was not a full doll, but a human bring back to life, she would still not be a ful human, but a cursed one, like the jack, who tricked the devil. So her master tricked the death. So in conclusion Jack is Jack o'lantern and Sally is a Frankenstein creation, so both aren't human anymore, and don't have soul. So both of them must stay in the halloween town, bc they aren't living, so they can't stay in the human world, and go to the hell either bc they don't have a soul. So in the song when sally and jack sing, they are word 'we're meant to be'' because they cannot, live and die. So there made for each other. In the halloween town, they will stay with each other forever. Sorry for my bad english, and this is my theory. And like the headless horse man, and jack, the are the same, o'lantern seek for his soul, and horseman for his head, why is that? because people belive that soul was in the head, not in the heart.
The Nightmare Before Christmas has been one of my favorite movie since it came out. I never would have contemplated Jack's backstory. I like that you did and explored it into details. Neat video. Thanks for the entertainment
I think Jack knew what Christmas was when he was human because he mentioned it feeling like a memory long since past or something, I just don’t think he remembers much of his life beforehand
If Jack had been the Headless Horseman, who was a Hessian soldier, he would have a German accent, as Hessians were german soldiers and mercenaries. If Jack was once alive, he was most likely “Stingy Jack”, who was a practical joker of Celtic folklore, and who carried a carved out turnip or gourd with a candle inside to light his path and find his way around the countryside at night to scare and play mean jokes on people.
I know this is an old post, but I like this theory the most! When I was watching, I even thought to myself: "A Hessian soldier celebrating an Irish holiday?" I think your theory fits the best of the ones I have read.
To answer your question, yes. I have read about the damage done by cannonball and i can tell you that there wouldn't be much of anything left of anyone that got hit with one of them. Also if a cannonball hit someone straight in the face their head would be completely destroyed.
Tim Burton himself said "same story just not in order". He was referring to Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and Nightmare Before Christmas. That was his way of saying both Victor's are the same and in death he became Jack.
He COULD be from the legend of Sleepy Hollow, but not the headless horseman! I think he is... Ichabod Crane...look he's tall lanky, the REAL life Ichabod was an actual solider in a war and it looks like Jack is dressed in soldier attire in one scene. The theory of him being burned could be true, if you watch or have read the legend of sleepy hollow, a flaming pumpkin head is thrown at Ichabod, where it hits him...and then he is never seen or heard of again. Maybe that's what the whole first scene of him being a pumpkin/scarecrow being lit on fire could be in correlation too, which is him being burned by the pumpkin head. Maybe a pumpkin in flames could have killed him, that’s where his "Pumpkin King" name came from. There is also a scene where Jack sings “Well since I am dead I can take off my head, to recite Shakespearean quotations” him being able to dislodge his head, could be a nod to the headless horseman possibly cutting it off after killing him? It makes sense kind of lol idk, just my theory.
Alternate theory: Jack is Ichabod Crane himself. They have similar body structures and Ichabod could have started scaring out of revenge because of what Abraham Van Brunt did. Also, he lived in the 1700s and was said by some women of the town upon his disappearance to have been "spirited away by supernatural means."
that's brilliant, a really clever twist there. A man who in mortal life was ruled by fears since Ichabod was very superstitious becoming the King of fright after the most terrifying experience of his life. pure genius
I've always had a fan theory that Jack Skellington was a Vaudevillian/stage actor before his death: He has an incredible stage presence He can perform flawlessly Skilled musician and singer
i think this kind of fits his layment. "Although carving a Jack-’o-lantern is a seasonal tradition today, this was not always the case. The practice of carving a Jack-o’-lantern originates in the Irish myth of stingy Jack. Stingy Jack later became Jack of the Lantern. According to his myth, Jack tricked the Devil. Then he made the Devil promise that he would not come for his soul when he died. When Jack did die, as the legend goes, God wouldn’t allow Jack into heaven. And neither, after being tricked, would the Devil permit him into hell. Instead, Jack’s soul was doomed to wander the earth with only a burning coal in his lantern to light the way. This legend gave birth to the modern-day Jack-o’-lantern. First people carved beets and gourds in the form of Jack’s lantern, as these were more widely available in the British Isles. Then as people moved to North America where pumpkins are more readily available, pumpkins became the most popular carving choice."
@@megalisa830bright6 do you have any idea how much research into folklore went into the nightmare before christmas? each character was based off some sort of folklore, death, or historically significant creature from folklore. heck, jack's full name is jack skellington, the pumpkin king. which was one of jack-o' lantern's titles within legends. plus, the song about jack's past is almost entirely the full description about jack-o' lantern's folklore.
What if Jack Skellington was Ichabod Crane? He was a teacher (smart),has a fondness for the theatre at least singing , know how to be charming and their complexion are similar. Also the way Ichabod die...Burned by an enchanted JACK o lantern...Well...burned corpse only bones remains and because of the way he die Pumking King
Fun fact: every character isn’t actually animated.. the creators of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” actually made clay models of each character,But they didn’t just got to stop there. They had to made hundred of different face expressions so it could look like they’re talking but they also had to move the characters. It took about an entire WEEK to just make a minute of the film!
I never considered that Jack was alive before becoming a part of Halloween town. I thought he just came into existance there. The reason I always thought that is because the characters of Halloween town have no concept of love or happiness. They only know how to scare people which makes it seem like they were all born there and that's all they know. The reason why the ending is so sweet is because despite them all living in a loveless world, Jack and Sally finally realise what they were missing and that is love.
Yeah! Exactly! I like to think that Halloween Town is where the creatures all originated from, and Halloween is all that they know about! ^_^ I think that's why Jack never knew about the other holidays, because they would all stay in their own separate Towns! :D
Jack doesn’t know what snow is... hence the song “What’s This?!” Plus, if you watch James & the Giant Peach - remember the sunken pirate ship that shows Jack as a dead pirate captain?
Yet suddenly a little bit later in the song he says they're throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads. It would make more sense for him to know what snow is if they go around different places and scare people, some of those are most likely covered in snow in October.
I forgot to mention he also eats the snow at the beginning. Is that something people do when they first see it?, assume it can be eaten? (may have been a random director choice since it's not part of the song)Though at the very end the other residents of Halloween town are confused and think it's a Christmas thing so I don't know there's a lot of mixed signals here.
Hmm, that sounds interesting, never tried it with flavorings. Yeah, I've eaten snow before too lol. I meant that if he didn't know what it was why would he randomly assume he should eat it?
I just thought that Victor from Frankenweenie was Victor from the Corpse Bride and died to become jack. This also fits with Tim's quote, "Every story has a beginning, middle, and end. Not necessarily in that order." - Tim Burton
Unicorn Sparkle Pants Victor from Frankenweenie got his name from Victor Frankenstein. Plus how are you raised in modern America but an adult in old England?
My theory : In the song jack sings in the beginning where he says “ to a man in Kentucky I’m mr unlucky “ which probably meant he was a man who lived in Kentucky and he had a run in with bad luck . And since he never heard of Christmas , like in this video , he was to have lived in the late 1800s , and his attire , which is a suit with what looks like a bow tie , he was maybe going to a formal event , and since he is a skeleton he may have drove there since cars were introduced in the later 1800s and somehow got into a crash , the car may have over heated or caused both to happen , which he probably set him on fire and burned him alive , and he is freakishly tall , so he may have been in a car that he could be able to fit in , which would need a certain amount of fuel , leading to him being soaked and then caught aflame , leading to his skin being burned away , eventually leading to his death, probably due to his wounds getting infected . I’m probably totally wrong , that’s just my theory .
Entertaining the thought of this fan theory despite the fact that long ago Tim Burton mentioned in an interview that Jack was just a guy who was murdered and buried in a pumpkin patch....If Jack had been a soldier, the idea that he was a Hessian isn't too far fetched because he mentions that he was known among England and France, and the British are the ones who press ganged Germans into the military (the Hessians.) However, he mentions dieing in Kentucky. Kentucky was neutral during the American Revolution, their main fight was with British-hired Native Americans who were paid to scalp Kentuckians and were paid based on the number of scalps they brought in. Had he been a Hessian, he'd have been fighting on the side of the British, and not many British soldiers entered Kentucky during the Revolutionary War. As stated previously, it was mostly battles against Native American mercenaries hired by the British. Jack would've been sent where he was most needed to the front lines, which were nowhere near Kentucky. The Revolutionary War wasn't in the early 1800s, either. It was 1775-1783. In keeping with the idea of the timeline based on his knowledge of Halloween but lack thereof regarding modern Christmas, and his death in Kentucky, it is much more likely that Jack was a soldier who fought for the British during the War of 1812. There are also some fan theories out there that Jack was originally based on a character from Irish folklore called Stingy Jack in regards to the origins of the Jack-O-Lantern, and the Irish did fight alongside the British against the non-British controlled Americas....IN the War of 1812. Now, to rebuke the whole thing fairly simply.....Jack in NMBC did NOT know what snow even was. However, it snows quite often in Germany, it snows in Britain but it only sticks maybe 15 days of the year presently...may have been different in the 1800s. The only place between Ireland, Britain, and Germany where it doesn't really snow is Ireland, though there are some mountains in Ireland that have snow on them during the winter...most winters in Ireland are rainy. So this suggests that Jack was most probably not a Hessian soldier and probably didn't fight in either the Revolutionary War OR the War of 1812 because he'd have experienced at least one or two snowy winters in either Britain or North America during the span of those years spent in military service. He could've been an Irish soldier who died in the War of 1812 before winter hit because the War of 1812 lasted from June 18, 1812 until February 18, 1815. So if he died early on in the war, he could've died before winter ever hit....and had he been Irish, he probably wouldn't have had much contact with snow, or very little memory of it from before he died. We do not, however, know in what year NMBC takes place (other than modern times, probably meant to reflect the 1990s) and how long Jack had already been Pumpkin King to that point. So other than his surprise at certain aspects of the Christmas holiday and traditions, we don't have a solid timeline. However the whole theory is still absolutely marvelous from a fictitious standpoint. I loved the Adventures of Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad (1949) as it was by far one of the more creepy cartoons around during my childhood.I've also always loved the legends and lore surrounding the Headless Horseman and Sleepy Hollow. ^.^
Community Without Walls He has to know what snow is. How else would he have known to say that the children were “throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads”?
Your point doesn't debunk his theory friend. He even says that jack, in the possibility of being an Irish soldier, may have seen snow once or twice before but had little to no recollection of it after his death. likewise, humans retain tons of information even if we can't immediately recall it, so jack may have known snow in his lifetime and forgotten it after his death, only to then recall the vague idea of snow and snowball in the heat of his excitement upon discovering Christmas Town.
I never said that it debunked anything. Just that there were some inconsistencies with the theory historically. However it's still a fun idea to entertain. However it *does* debunk his Hessian / Headless Horseman theory if we follow the timeline he set. Jack states in one of his songs that he died in Kentucky. No Hessians died in Kentucky as far as we know in recorded history. However, several Irish soldiers may have.
All of your opinions are awesome. But Jack didn't say he died in Kentucky. He said, "To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr. Unlucky". Everything else was on point.
I think this connection to the Headless Horseman is interesting considering Tim Burton also directed Sleep Hollow which is shaped around this story too and also further connecting Tim's films together.
Who is Jack? He's the Pumpkin King..... "'Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems In a place that perhaps you've seen in your dreams. For the story that you are about to be told Began with the holiday worlds of old. Now, you've probably wondered where holidays come from. If you haven't, I'd say it's time you begun. For holidays are the result of much fuss and hard work For the worlds that create them for us. Well, you see now, quite simply that's all that they do-- Making one unique holiday, especially for you." Asking who Jack is would be like wondering whose skin was used to make Sally, because that's what she is, a human skin, sewn together and stuffed with autumn leaves. And a mother. "With four or five skeleton children at hand, Playing strange little tunes, In their xylophone band" Jack has always been the Pumpkin King, the ruler of Halloween. But once, just for a night, he got to be Sandy Klaws.
@@trinitymoon8488 in an unused epilogue ( I think thats what it was) for the movie it was stated that Santa returned to halloween town, and saw that Jack and Sally had kids
You know, I can get past the fact they are practically the Undead who live in their own realm and can travel between different worlds of holidays and ours, but I can't get over the fact a Rag Doll and a Skeleton had babies...
Maybe Jack didn't know about Christmas because they lose all their memories when they die. That would explain why Jack feels lost or doesn't know his true feelings. It is possible that they (the folk of Halloween Town) "raised" him to be who he was.
I've thought about this as well. Most notable in the "What Does It Mean?" song, where Jack specifically says, "like a memory long since past." Could he be alluding to the fact that even he has no memory of his life before he died?
Not to mention he also stated, "To Have Died in Kentucky, I am Mister Unlucky." Suggesting he died in Kentucky, which did not exist until after the Revolutionary War.
He seems to suit the Irish legend stingy Jack who tricked the devil multiple times. Who wasn't allowed into heaven but also the devil wouldn't collect his soul. Where he carved a turnip to hold the candle the devil gave him to light his path as the devil felt pitty on him. Seems to suit the character and reasoning explaining limbo in this
Also, Mr. Centipede calls the pirate captain a “skelington” which is Jack’s last name. He then says “jackpot” as he tries to leave with the compass. The skeleton captain makes the same exact scary face Jack does at the townmeeting.
Yes that's a Jack Skellington cameo but I personally think that if there's any lore with the Jack cameo, then Jack was either convinced to cameo in the movie or that was one of his scares lol
JEDI TOAD true, but do you remember that there were rumors that icabob was still alive and we actualy see him in the end. The whole "headless hourseman will kill you" could have been an act
Jack likes to scare people not kill them. And as he makes no mention of ever losing his head for an extended period I find your theory very unbelievable. They don't even have the same body types. Could it be that Jack is just quite simply Jack. Burton himself has already disclosed that "Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. But no one says you have to write them in that order.". This references Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride as being part of The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Jack’s backstory is in James and the Giant Peach. He was a pirate captain (great leader and fighter like you said) back in the 1600s who loved to scare people. Jack said “to have died in Kentucky I’m Mr. unlucky and I’m known throughout England and France.” He sailed throughout Europe looting ships abs eventually got lost in Antartica where his ship sunk and his whole crew died. Antarctica like Kentucky is basically in the middle of nowhere (no offense to anyone). Jack’s crew kicked him out after the battle with Mr. Centipede and he decided to become a good guy. He learned how to make the magic green things that grew the Giant Peach and brought him back from the dead. He used them to bring other dead people back including the Mayor and Dr. Finkelstien. If you think about it, Jack highjacked another holiday much like pirates would highjack other ships.
But Miranda JTR was only known through England. France did not have a Jack the Ripper Also newer evidence seems to state Jack the ripper might actually be a mary the ripper
When I die, I’m going straight there... also jack would’ve been burned alive, the bone cannot burn and at the beginning how he was a scarecrow burning, that’s a sign of how he died
Everything burns. You just have to get it to the right temp and give it enough time. We're talking something like 600⁰C, which the temp of an average cremation, for 1 to 3 hours. Your typical structure fire doesn't burn long enough to fully reduce a body to ash.
Not a theory about Jack.. But about zero. Okay.... Zero was actually Sparky from Frankenweenie before he died. Then he was Scraps from corpse bride. Then of course he becomes Zero. Now my theory about Jack is that all of the dog owners from all those movies are the same person!!!! In Frankenweenie that was him as a little boy. Then he becomes Victor in corpse bride. And then Jack. I understand they all have different names but that is because once Victor got older he moved away from his friends an wanted to start over... So he changed his name to Victor. When he died he went to Halloween Town and he didn't want anyone to recognize/remember him.
Another thing to kinda support the theory is when jack is being carried out in the opening scenes of nightmare before Christmas, he’s on a horse with a pumpkin for a head. Another thing is during this scene he swallows the fire, lighting himself on fire, to which the headless horseman has a pumpkin light on fire,
My headcanon is that Jack and The Headless Horseman are not the same people. I believe that The Horseman was the former king of Halloween, and Jack was his apprentice at the time. The Horseman gave Jack a bunch of war trivia and knowledge that Jack used later on in his life as the king.
It would make sense if he was in the war bc he “knocked the bravest of thier feet” the people who fought in the war must have been brave idk if this makes sense but im a huge fan of tim burton
2:04 are we sure about that though? Jack's fascination for christmas could also be a lost memory from his life. Seeing this christmas land lightened something up inside of Jack and he felt a connection to it, a connection to his human self.
Well, maybe he wasnt the headless horseman. But a soldier in the American Revolution, got shot and he maybe died in fear, thus, he wants to scare others so the other people can feel the same way he did. It makes sense to.
Though I do respect your theory it doesn't really make sense I mean in the begging of movie when Jack came out of the well we can see that before there was a pumpkin head burning while dancing which can explain how he died (burned alive) also when he sings his solo (Jack's Lament) he says, "I'll scare you out of your pants" and he was known throughout England and France which can mean he could have been some sort of person that would scare people (I don't know the name of what that would be called back then) but that's what I think.
BRILLIANT: HE DOES Have The Bone Structure & Height Of Ichabod Crane & Burton DID Make His OWN Version Of "SleepyHollow" Which SHOWS That He Obviously DID Have An Affinity For The Irving Story! In-Fact; You See Jack Constantly Studying/Reading Books & Even TEACHING The Residents About The Customs Of The Seasons!
I love this theory! Though I always believed that Jack was something like a miscarriage, dead since birth. All he knows is Halloween and that's why Christmas is so strange to him
What about coralline? Tim burton made the coralline movie but the book of coralline is wrote by Neil gaiman, he also wrote another book called the graveyard book. The main antagonist is called THE MAN JACK.
I think his real identity is stingy Jack. A man that like to play tricks on people and was far too stingy to help anyone but himself. He was clever though he managed to trick Satan more than once. When he finally died he was such a wicked man that heaven didn't let him in. So he went to hell and when Satan saw who it was he was so ashamed of being tricked he didn't let him in either. He did give Jack one thing a coal of hellfire which burns bright and never goes out. Jack hollowed out a turnips and put the coal into it and that's Jack's lantern. forced to travel between worlds I guess he settled in Halloween town that explains why he can't stay dead. In Ireland they used hollow out turnips and put candles in them I'm sure Satan told the other demons not to bother anyone with a burning turnip on the doorstep. naturally everyone does it who wants to be bothered by demons. And when Irish immigrants moved to America pumpkins were far easier than turnips to carve. Jack's lantern jack-o'-lantern. Maybe the o was to remind people of its Irish heritage O'Brien O'Malley O'Hickey who knows what Jack's last name really was.
My theory: Jack Skellington is the pirate Calico Jack. 1, Jack appears as the captain of the ghost ship James runs into in the icy waters. 2, "Calico" Jack Rackham died in 1720, before modern Christmas practices in the 19th century. 3, After Calico Jack was executed, his body was left in an iron gibbet for possibly years, his skeleton was on display for a very long time. 4, Calico clothing of the time very strongly favored stripes, which Skellington wears 5, They even have the same name lmao
also, the way most people think jack died was he died by being burned alive so his skin came of and he became a skelleton and also when he swallows fire he acts wat happene wen he died only im pretty sure wen he actually died he wouldn't just swallow fire because who would? ;-;
J Badboy The headless horse man's head was blown off by a cannon ball, those thing can shatter a skull dude. Maybe the doctor did create his head, just like how he created those skeleton reindeer.
The Headless Horseman was a legend around the 1770's, a Hessian when his head was shot off by a cannon, but the horse kept going, even if he was dead. I learned this from my FAVORITE Social Studies teacher.
Jack died from being burned alive. When someone is Burt alive their skellington are the only thing that is left. Their is proof In the opening song, Jack sets himself on fire then jumps in the water, and turns into Jack the skellington.
Skeleton, not Skellington. Jack is a skeleton. His name is Jack Skellington. Skellington is a surname (as in 'of the town of Skelling'). They chose his last name because it sounds like skeleton.
THANK YOU for finding a new explanation for Jack. I hate (strong work, but really) the theory that Jack is Victor. Also that the kid from Frankenweenie became Victor and became Jack. It's wildly accepted with almost no facts and I don't know, I just really really hate it.
I so glad to find someone else who doesn't buy that theory. Not only are all the time periods mixed up, the dogs are all different and even the personalty of each character doesn't match up ether. I don't even see how people think Burton himself confirmed it when (as you said) there's no proof.
Tim Burton lost a dog when he was younger so that’s why there always a dead dog in his animated films... Probably why people thought they were all the same person.
I hate that theory because the are all set in different points in time. It's like people don't realize that. I think it's more likely that Jack is related to Victor somehow.
I think Jack was born in halloween town and never was human. Thinking that any of these halloween town characters make were humans make no sense. It's like thinking that all the lutins from christmas town were human from the real world, that make no sense. Halloween town is just a town where it's halloween everyday, it's not the afterlife.
@@miriamambriz-mendez4138 unmmmm no....the holiday that the Romans celibated was... Christmas it's self has always been to celebrate the birth of Jesus......pls read up on history before commenting otherwise it just makes you look foolish
Jack was burned death. (WARNING GORY) When a person is burned to death all the skin and muscle and everything is burned off. This leaving a skeleton. Also it shows a big red flashing signal that he was in the beginning. When he had a pumpkin head. He lit himself on fire and then proceeded to dance. Obviously jumping into the fountain in the middle of town and revealing Jack Skellington! This part happens to be my favorite. So there in a long comment that was what happened to Jack in his human life a.k.a his death. Source: “How the characters in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Died”
Don't confuse his anamorphic form as a condition of Jacks death. AS a spirit representation of a Holiday, the Holiday its self might determine Jacks form. True in the Movie Jack doesn't change form but I postulate that doesn't mean its not possible. Then again this is the land of make believe and everyone can believe what they want.
Jack explores new ways to be scary and being burned to death is pretty scary. I don't think it was personally symbolic at all. That whole scene was sort of a yearly ritual they do every halloween and likely changes each year.
@@RikkuTakanashi Exactly what I thought. It can be related to his past bit also it seems a lot like a yearly performance that can change to scare the folks.
One question about your theory Issac, Why do we see Jack Skeleton in a pirate ship in the movie "James and the Giant peach"? : th-cam.com/video/hBFovm9TAvwC/w-d-xo.htmlan you explain this in a second part to this theory?
Jack is called "the pumpkin king" and in the beginning of the movie, there is a scarecrow with a pumpkin as head. The scarecrow is even as thin as Jack, so that means that the scarecrow IS Jack.
This is no revelation. At the end of the opening sequence the "scarecrow" comes to life, leaps into the fountain and emerges as Jack Skellington in all his ghoulish glory. Besides which, do you mean to suggest Jack was a scarecrow before he became the Pumpkin King...? 🤣
Well, if we're going to assume who was Jack before his demise then look no further in the fairy tales like Lazy Jack, Jack the Giant Killer (or Jack and the beanstalk), and so forth.
kayway the kay way hi This isn't Harry Potter. Nearly Headless Nick is a different character entirely. There was an actual Disney movie about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. The ending of the movie shows the Horseman throwing a flaming jack'o lantern at Ichabod. While his death is unconfirmed, people believe that the Horseman stole his head as Ichabod's hat is shown with Ichabod nowhere in sight
1. Nightmare Before Christmas was originally produced by Touchstone Pictures and had no connection with Walt Disney at the time of it's making 2. Disney's The Headless Horseman is BUFF, and the size of an average man. Jack Skellington is thin and tall with lanky, long arms and long, bony fingers. He also has teeny tiny feet. The Headless Horseman's Feet are of Average size and his fingers are not as long as Jack's. 3. Jack is not known for riding a black horse. Only a prop horse. Wouldn't there be horse in Halloween Town then? Wouldn't Jack then own this Horse (Skeleton, Ghost, or otherwise) 4. Jack is known for having a Ghost Dog. The Headless Horseman does NOT have a Dog. 5. The setting doesn't make sense. "The Legend of Sleepy Hallow" took place in Sleepy Hallow, New York during the American Revolutionary War, but Jack claims he scared in Kentucky, and is known throughout England and France (according to Jack's Lament).
Here's why I love this theory and believe it. The Headless Horseman was killed in life by a cannon. Jack as Santa was defeated by being shot out of the air with a modern type of cannon. Artistically, it checks out.
Only problem is what happened to the horse? I always assumed that was an attack were part of the original story and hunting. Couldn't it be a possibility that him saying he's "dead" is not in the sense of dead and alive but like I might say im "mammalian"? More of a descriptor of the class of creature than any comment on its previous state.
The dog from frankenweenie was called sparkie and jacks dog was also called sparkie so jack is victor the main character from corpse bride was also called victor so it was one storyline
Damn, that resemblance is uncanny! I have to wonder if the Ratatouille character designer was inspired by this Headless Horseman animation, they're practically identical looking!
I just want to know if the nightmare before Christmas is a Halloween film or a Christmas film, plus if jack is the headless horseman, then why does he have a head? If jacks face was shot with a cannonball wouldn't his skull have shattered?
It’s a Christmas movie. Let’s come up with some theories now, so I haven’t watched all the video yet. But I gather from your comment he gets shot in the face, could’ve been from fighting the Indians and that’s why he didn’t go to the thanksgiving one (I know they didn’t eat the turkey then yea) could’ve been french and the guillotine/British axe/sword what have you... buried with his head so there’s that one...
I love Jack Skellington. I have wondered this too. I thought that there could be clues in "Jack's Lament". There's a line i have thought might give a clue but I have no idea what it leads to; the line is "To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr. Unlucky and I'm known throughtout England and France. And since I am dead i can take off my head to recite Shakespherean quotations." I have been thinking maybe Jack was some kind of performer/entertainer while human. Also Jack is tired of scaring and doing the same thing every year so that is how he ends up in Christmas town.
It would make sense if he's travelled all over as a performer and storyteller and then dies in Kentucky in a very unfortunate way where he's burned alive.
Very interesting theory!! I can’t say that he was ever the Headless horseman though bc it’s obvious the horseman is more of the murdering sort and Jack just likes to strike fear. Maybe he murdered people when he was alive but it doesn’t seem to be his key way of striking fear like the horseman. Hmmmmm….
frankenweenie's main character is named Victor and same for Corpse Bride and the both owned dogs. In frankenweenie his dog dies and the dead dog in Corpse Bride is that dog. And in the nightmare before christmas i feel like Victor didn't want to go by Victor because he was known by the dead already and he didn't want them to because of his decision not to continue the marriage with Emily that he changed his name to Jack and from there on. I'm claiming to be right or anything it's just what I think.
and sleepy hollow is originally an english folk tale told to kids so that they wouldn't leave there homes on All Hollows Eve so the england and france part makes perfect sense
My theory is that there once existed a prominent figure named Jack the Pumpkin Head, renowned for his charismatic persona and eerie charm. He was known to be quite talkative and had formed a close, almost amicable relationship with the devil himself, who occasionally paid visits to Jack. However, one day, Jack confided in the devil, expressing a deep desire to be replaced and take on the mantle of the illustrious Pumpkin King. In a twist of fate, the devil granted Jack's wish, causing him to vanish mysteriously from the town, leaving the residents perplexed and sorrowful over his sudden disappearance. Despite their efforts to find him, Jack was never seen again. In a peculiar turn of events, a note was found, purportedly from Jack himself, declaring his departure from the town to embark on a new journey. The note hinted at the inevitability of someone replacing him as the new Pumpkin King. As time passed, the memory of Jack the Pumpkin Head gradually faded from the town's collective consciousness, relegating him to the status of a mere legend and eventually a children's story. Years later, a strikingly similar figure emerged, introducing himself as Jack Skellington. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Jack the Pumpkin Head, he exuded the same charismatic yet eerie aura. In a testament to his likeness, the townspeople immediately hailed him as the new Pumpkin King, oblivious to the forgotten legacy of Jack the Pumpkin Head, who now existed only as a distant tale from the town's past.

THAT'S why I support the theory that Jack is really Ichabod Crane...
@@edgardeitz2784 same
thats why he said jack may have been drafted and didnt want to fight .
are you assuming that every soldier loves killing ?
And didn't trust him right from the start

Wow nice theory 👏🏽
That's what I always thought
Frankenweenie came out before Nightmare Before Christmas. The original was released in 1984.

He could be Stingy Jack. He was a trickster who tricked the devil, and was eternally in limbo. He used a hollowed out turnip to light his way.
I agree
I also agree because Jack used a pumpkin instead of his head occasionally which is a jack-o-lantern AND Stingy Jack has many names one of which was “Jack of the Lantern”
And then he found Halloween Town and it became his home. Then he eventually lost his memory of finding it which is why he doesn’t recognize the doors later.
Yes this IS what he is
yeah, he doesn't have a soul, so he have to stay in the halloween town, and Sally too, bc she wasn't even human, but a creation, she was made, so she doesn't have a soul, even if she was not a full doll, but a human bring back to life, she would still not be a ful human, but a cursed one, like the jack, who tricked the devil.
So in the song when sally and jack sing, they are word 'we're meant to be''
because they cannot, live and die.
Doesn't jack claim to be well known through England and france?
Edit: I don't know what to do with this information I just thought to point it out
Also he's known to one guy in Kentucky.
Could he be Jack The Ripper?
The heshens were allies of England and enemy's of France who were allies the colony's. Thus be was notorious in England and France.
And unlucky to a guy in Kentucky who saw his head get blown off. But the problem is a cannon ball to the head would obliterate the skull.

@Orange Crewmate Orange is sus.

I know this is an old post, but I like this theory the most! When I was watching, I even thought to myself: "A Hessian soldier celebrating an Irish holiday?" I think your theory fits the best of the ones I have read.
If Jack was the headless horseman and the horseman got hit with a cannonball, wouldn't Jack's skull be caved in? Just a theory...
No a cannonball would swiftly sweep a head from a neck like croquet.
To answer your question, yes. I have read about the damage done by cannonball and i can tell you that there wouldn't be much of anything left of anyone that got hit with one of them. Also if a cannonball hit someone straight in the face their head would be completely destroyed.
If jack was the headless horsemen and the horsemen get hit with a conball,
Wouldn't jack skull be carved in? Just a thorey.
A movie theory
Oh yeah..
Tim Burton himself said "same story just not in order". He was referring to Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and Nightmare Before Christmas. That was his way of saying both Victor's are the same and in death he became Jack.
Yeah but Victor has an accent, Jack doesn't.
And the way it works is different
And also Burton said Jack was just some guy buried in a pumpkin patch
he acully he was bernt alive
Julitza Matos I think this whole video is dumb and very loosely connected anyways
Very amazed.
Hmm.
yea that is aalso reasonable
That is a rly good theory thanks
I paused the video to really read your comment. I am intrigued. I think you're on to something. Ooh! Fun! Happy Halloween! 🎃
Better theory than the one in the video
Alternate theory: Jack is Ichabod Crane himself. They have similar body structures and Ichabod could have started scaring out of revenge because of what Abraham Van Brunt did. Also, he lived in the 1700s and was said by some women of the town upon his disappearance to have been "spirited away by supernatural means."
that's brilliant, a really clever twist there. A man who in mortal life was ruled by fears since Ichabod was very superstitious becoming the King of fright after the most terrifying experience of his life. pure genius
Plus this would have to dovetail into Johnny Depp's portrayal of Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow. Sounds good to me!

Hello
Jack doesn’t know what snow is... hence the song “What’s This?!”
Plus, if you watch James & the Giant Peach - remember the sunken pirate ship that shows Jack as a dead pirate captain?
Yet suddenly a little bit later in the song he says they're throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads. It would make more sense for him to know what snow is if they go around different places and scare people, some of those are most likely covered in snow in October.
I forgot to mention he also eats the snow at the beginning. Is that something people do when they first see it?, assume it can be eaten? (may have been a random director choice since it's not part of the song)Though at the very end the other residents of Halloween town are confused and think it's a Christmas thing so I don't know there's a lot of mixed signals here.
+Ashfer2 you can put maple syrup on snow and eat it like candy. They used to do it back in the day.

My theory :
In the song jack sings in the beginning where he says “ to a man in Kentucky I’m mr unlucky “ which probably meant he was a man who lived in Kentucky and he had a run in with bad luck .

The world was colder in the 1800s, and was even going through a miniature ice age. They definitely had some snow during winter back then.
I think this connection to the Headless Horseman is interesting considering Tim Burton also directed Sleep Hollow which is shaped around this story too and also further connecting Tim's films together.
Who is Jack? He's the Pumpkin King.....
"'Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems

Asking who Jack is would be like wondering whose skin was used to make Sally, because that's what she is, a human skin, sewn together and stuffed with autumn leaves.
And a mother.
"With four or five skeleton children at hand,

Where he carved a turnip to hold the candle the devil gave him to light his path as the devil felt pitty on him. Seems to suit the character and reasoning explaining limbo in this
Yeah, Jack o' Lantern
Yeah that's what I thought
That's my theory too, I think Jack represents Stingy Jack who lead to the jack-o-lantern which is why Jack is the pumpkin king
Steamy Nerd as an Irish person, I’m delighted to know that other people know and remember that legend!!
@@HaleyGrant01 i love legends like that i am a Halloween fanatic. I love these things! There fantastic & undeniably intresting!
If we’re talking about the James and the giant peach that’s not a Tim Burton film
Yep o saw it the exact same one. Besides what other movie has a skeleton who looks exactly like Jack
It was a cameo appearance so no he could have been burned at the stake because of his clothes that makes more sense.
Wait isn’t Jack against murder in the movie Oggie Boggie is the only murderer and Jack seems against it.
maybe jack did it then found out the aftermath sucks and that's why he's against it
maybe he was against it after he found out
It could have been remorse for the life take by him
JEDI TOAD I
JEDI TOAD true, but do you remember that there were rumors that icabob was still alive and we actualy see him in the end. The whole "headless hourseman will kill you" could have been an act
Jack likes to scare people not kill them. And as he makes no mention of ever losing his head for an extended period I find your theory very unbelievable. They don't even have the same body types. Could it be that Jack is just quite simply Jack. Burton himself has already disclosed that
"Every story has a beginning, middle and an end.
If you think about it, Jack highjacked another holiday much like pirates would highjack other ships.
has this been confirmed?

When I die, I’m going straight there... also jack would’ve been burned alive, the bone cannot burn and at the beginning how he was a scarecrow burning, that’s a sign of how he died
Everything burns. You just have to get it to the right temp and give it enough time. We're talking something like 600⁰C, which the temp of an average cremation, for 1 to 3 hours. Your typical structure fire doesn't burn long enough to fully reduce a body to ash.
@@K.Marie119 I worked at a mortuary and you are correct. Good job🤗
Kenzi Hex. Seems fitting
Kenzi Hex I had this exact theory bro
Yeah it makes sense
But isn't frankenweenie more present then the corpse bride? He couldn't have gone back in time to grow up
that theory was debunked
Oakley Koelzer I like your take on the theory, but where is the head less horsemen now?

Well, maybe he wasnt the headless horseman. But a soldier in the American Revolution, got shot and he maybe died in fear, thus, he wants to scare others so the other people can feel the same way he did. It makes sense to.
That's stupid
Though I do respect your theory it doesn't really make sense I mean in the begging of movie when Jack came out of the well we can see that before there was a pumpkin head burning while dancing which can explain how he died (burned alive) also when he sings his solo (Jack's Lament) he says, "I'll scare you out of your pants" and he was known throughout England and France which can mean he could have been some sort of person that would scare people (I don't know the name of what that would be called back then) but that's what I think.

What about coralline? Tim burton made the coralline movie but the book of coralline is wrote by Neil gaiman, he also wrote another book called the graveyard book. The main antagonist is called THE MAN JACK.
maybe jack skellington went through antagonist phase and became THE MAN JACK (is that right? i dunno)
Coraline isn’t a Tim Burton movie , Henry Selick directed and developed the screenplay with the halo of Neil Gaiman.
thank you! i hate it when people claim its Tim Burton
I also hate when people say Coraline is made my Tim burton. It is by Henry Selick
😐 sorry.
That is a possibility. I'm surprised you know that story, not many do.
4, Calico clothing of the time very strongly favored stripes, which Skellington wears
5, They even have the same name lmao
also at the start of nbc, when he swallowed fire, he was riding a hay horse, and had a pumpkin head, like the headless man on the horse uses pumpkins
nikkinoivern you mean the headless horseman
also, the way most people think jack died was he died by being burned alive so his skin came of and he became a skelleton and also when he swallows fire he acts wat happene wen he died only im pretty sure wen he actually died he wouldn't just swallow fire because who would? ;-;

TickedOff Priest Na his head just became a skull when he died and his skin stripped off!
J Badboy The headless horse man's head was blown off by a cannon ball, those thing can shatter a skull dude. Maybe the doctor did create his head, just like how he created those skeleton reindeer.
What if jack's head was made by the doctor, but what if the same cannon ball was used to make it?!
Raiden Rebrick Then that would be interesting. Unlikely, but it would be cool.
The Headless Horseman was a legend around the 1770's, a Hessian when his head was shot off by a cannon, but the horse kept going, even if he was dead. I learned this from my FAVORITE Social Studies teacher.
Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, James and the Giant Peach, and A Nightmare before Christmas are all about the same character in different time lines.

I'm happy I could provide an alternative! Thanks for watching!
Tim Burton lost a dog when he was younger so that’s why there always a dead dog in his animated films... Probably why people thought they were all the same person.
BerrySparrowpaw their only connection is that they all had dogs, and the influence for that was Tim Burton having a dog when he was a kid.
I dont think it matters who Jack was when he was alive, because I love jack for who he is now..the king of Halloween.
Jack is the "leader" of Halloween, just like Santa Claus is the "leader" of Christmas.

The most known theory is that jack was also skinned alive
Don't confuse his anamorphic form as a condition of Jacks death. AS a spirit representation of a Holiday, the Holiday its self might determine Jacks form. True in the
Movie Jack doesn't change form but I postulate that doesn't mean its not possible.
Then again this is the land of make believe and everyone can believe what they want.
Jack explores new ways to be scary and being burned to death is pretty scary. I don't think it was personally symbolic at all. That whole scene was sort of a yearly ritual they do every halloween and likely changes each year.
@Ridonkulous :P skin takes a long time to decompose by itself, it takes around 50 years to decompose

BUT THATS JUST A THEORY

That is just a costume. But cool
It's pretty much confirmed that the scarecrow was his costume during the ending scene of "This is Halloween" lol
Well, if we're going to assume who was Jack before his demise then look no further in the fairy tales like Lazy Jack, Jack the Giant Killer (or Jack and the beanstalk), and so forth.
JACK IS SO TALL!! HE IS THE BEANSTALK

I just really want him to be Ichabod Crane and that's why his head comes off I know it's because he's a skeleton but still
Tusken-Wattol y
Is this related to Harry potter if so he's nearly headless nick
Jack having once been Ichabod Crane is actually a really neat idea
kayway the kay way hi This isn't Harry Potter.

I think Jack is the original Jack from jack-o-lantern the original reason of Halloween
That's what I thought too! Him being Stingy Jack would be fitting.
Jack-o-Lantern is the reason why we decorade pumpkins for Halloween. The celebration itself is actually Irish and way older.
Midnight
Not Irish, Gaelic. And gourds WERE used to ward off spirits, but not Pumpkins.
Except it was replaced with pumpkins on a much larger scale. And Jack was Irish, Rutabaga not gourd.
Everyone arguing here needs to watch and read The Halloween Tree. It isn’t just Gaelic. It has many influences from many cultures.

Omg your right
1. Nightmare Before Christmas was originally produced by Touchstone Pictures and had no connection with Walt Disney at the time of it's making
Wouldn't Jack then own this Horse (Skeleton, Ghost, or otherwise)
Isaac: Jack Skellington is the scariest creature ever! | Slenderman: *Hold my children blood.*
Jack was more a thinker, jeepers creepers: hold these eyes
Here's why I love this theory and believe it. The Headless Horseman was killed in life by a cannon. Jack as Santa was defeated by being shot out of the air with a modern type of cannon. Artistically, it checks out.
Only problem is what happened to the horse? I always assumed that was an attack were part of the original story and hunting. Couldn't it be a possibility that him saying he's "dead" is not in the sense of dead and alive but like I might say im "mammalian"? More of a descriptor of the class of creature than any comment on its previous state.
EnAimBoy wait isn't Halloween town also a movie series done by Disney? About witches? I wonder if they r linked.

Could’ve been an alien! 😯😯😯😲😲👽👻
Joylinn it was released October 13th. It's a Halloween movie.
I think he did die in the American revolution because he said he was known throughout France and England
It would make sense if he's travelled all over as a performer and storyteller and then dies in Kentucky in a very unfortunate way where he's burned alive.
in jacks lament, he mentions that he is known throughout england and france.
i always wondered wtf this meant.

Hmmmmm….
Reaching like the end of Space Jam
frankenweenie's main character is named Victor and same for Corpse Bride and the both owned dogs.

Corpse Bride and Frakenweenie are set in different time periods though
