    I think Jack was actually burned at the stake. I mean he's a skeleton(when someone was burned to death all that was left was bones), he has no idea that a modern Christmas is(this happened before the 1800's) and when he enters he's literally burning on fire. Soo ... Idk just an idea

    The headless horseman seemed too violent to be Jack. Yes the characters Halloweentown seemed to glory in gore and death but mainly because it's a good way to scare people. Scaring people is what they're all about but not necessarily actually harming them. Remember in "This is Halloween" it says "tender lumpings everywhere, life's no fun without a good scare. THAT'S OUR JOB BUT WE'RE NOT MEAN, IN OUR TOWN OF HALLOWEEN" And while many of the toys jack gave out did chase and terrorize the kids, they didn't actually hurt anyone even if they had the chance (remember the giant snake swallowing the presents and the Christmas tree, but never tried to attack the child.) So, no I don't think Jack was ever a soldier. Jack scared people in a fun way. Which is what Halloween is about. He just didn't understand that Christmas is about a different kind of fun. I don't think Jack was ever actually a living human. If anything he could be called the spirit of Halloween. References to him being dead are not meant to be taken at face value. It's just part of him being a scary figure. The only one in Halloweentown who could be considered dangerous or actually "mean" was Oogie Boogie, and Jack obviously hated him and didn't trust him right from the start.

      are you assuming that every soldier loves killing ?

    • @rmt1989ify
      @rmt1989ify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @saur2244 I specifically said I did not think Jack could have been the headless horseman. The horseman was a spectre devoted to revenge, to taking the heads of others as recompense for the loss of his own head. Obviously a very violent goal I did not say anything about all soldiers loving killing. The fact is there is nothing to suggest Jack or any of the residents of Halloweentown were human. As I stated I believe Jack is the spirit of Halloween. Basically he came into being as the holiday of Halloween developed, it's the customs and traditions of Halloween that make Jack what he is. "The Pumpkin King of Halloween" just as it's the customs and traditions of Christmas that make Santa Claus what he is, or the Easter Bunny what he is. They exist solely because those holidays exist. Trying to give them human origins just seems pointless.

    There is actually a theory that Tim Burton meant for Frankenweenie, The Corpse Bride, and The Nightmare Before Christmas to be one story. One reason is because he said “Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. Not necessarily in that order.” Frankenweenie came out in 2012, The Corpse Bride came out in 2005, and The Nightmare Before Christmas came out in 1993. Another reason to believe this is that in Frankenweenie, a boy’s beloved dog dies and he tries to bring him back to life. In The Corpse Bride, Victor receives a gift from Emily (the Corpse Bride) which is the dead version of Victor’s beloved dog, which died when he was a kid. In The Nightmare Before Christmas Jack has his dog which has the same facial structure as the dead version of Victor’s dog in The Corpse Bride. But think what you want, it is just what I believe.

      yeah, he doesn't have a soul, so he have to stay in the halloween town, and Sally too, bc she wasn't even human, but a creation, she was made, so she doesn't have a soul, even if she was not a full doll, but a human bring back to life, she would still not be a ful human, but a cursed one, like the jack, who tricked the devil. So her master tricked the death.
      So in conclusion Jack is Jack o'lantern and Sally is a Frankenstein creation, so both aren't human anymore, and don't have soul. So both of them must stay in the halloween town, bc they aren't living, so they can't stay in the human world, and go to the hell either bc they don't have a soul.
      So in the song when sally and jack sing, they are word 'we're meant to be''
      because they cannot, live and die. So there made for each other. In the halloween town, they will stay with each other forever.
      Sorry for my bad english, and this is my theory.
      And like the headless horse man, and jack, the are the same, o'lantern seek for his soul, and horseman for his head, why is that? because people belive that soul was in the head, not in the heart.

    If Jack had been the Headless Horseman, who was a Hessian soldier, he would have a German accent, as Hessians were german soldiers and mercenaries.
    If Jack was once alive, he was most likely “Stingy Jack”, who was a practical joker of Celtic folklore, and who carried a carved out turnip or gourd with a candle inside to light his path and find his way around the countryside at night to scare and play mean jokes on people.

    He COULD be from the legend of Sleepy Hollow, but not the headless horseman! I think he is...
    Ichabod Crane...look he's tall lanky, the REAL life Ichabod was an actual solider in a war and it looks like Jack is dressed in soldier attire in one scene. The theory of him being burned could be true, if you watch or have read the legend of sleepy hollow, a flaming pumpkin head is thrown at Ichabod, where it hits him...and then he is never seen or heard of again. Maybe that's what the whole first scene of him being a pumpkin/scarecrow being lit on fire could be in correlation too, which is him being burned by the pumpkin head. Maybe a pumpkin in flames could have killed him, that’s where his "Pumpkin King" name came from. There is also a scene where Jack sings “Well since I am dead I can take off my head, to recite Shakespearean quotations” him being able to dislodge his head, could be a nod to the headless horseman possibly cutting it off after killing him?
    It makes sense kind of lol idk, just my theory.

    i think this kind of fits his layment.
    "Although carving a Jack-’o-lantern is a seasonal tradition today, this was not always the case. The practice of carving a Jack-o’-lantern originates in the Irish myth of stingy Jack. Stingy Jack later became Jack of the Lantern.
    According to his myth, Jack tricked the Devil. Then he made the Devil promise that he would not come for his soul when he died. When Jack did die, as the legend goes, God wouldn’t allow Jack into heaven. And neither, after being tricked, would the Devil permit him into hell. Instead, Jack’s soul was doomed to wander the earth with only a burning coal in his lantern to light the way.
    This legend gave birth to the modern-day Jack-o’-lantern. First people carved beets and gourds in the form of Jack’s lantern, as these were more widely available in the British Isles. Then as people moved to North America where pumpkins are more readily available, pumpkins became the most popular carving choice."

    I never considered that Jack was alive before becoming a part of Halloween town. I thought he just came into existance there. The reason I always thought that is because the characters of Halloween town have no concept of love or happiness. They only know how to scare people which makes it seem like they were all born there and that's all they know.
    The reason why the ending is so sweet is because despite them all living in a loveless world, Jack and Sally finally realise what they were missing and that is love.

      Yet suddenly a little bit later in the song he says they're throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads. It would make more sense for him to know what snow is if they go around different places and scare people, some of those are most likely covered in snow in October.

    • @Ashfer2
      @Ashfer2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I forgot to mention he also eats the snow at the beginning. Is that something people do when they first see it?, assume it can be eaten? (may have been a random director choice since it's not part of the song)Though at the very end the other residents of Halloween town are confused and think it's a Christmas thing so I don't know there's a lot of mixed signals here.

    My theory :
    In the song jack sings in the beginning where he says “ to a man in Kentucky I’m mr unlucky “ which probably meant he was a man who lived in Kentucky and he had a run in with bad luck . And since he never heard of Christmas , like in this video , he was to have lived in the late 1800s , and his attire , which is a suit with what looks like a bow tie , he was maybe going to a formal event , and since he is a skeleton he may have drove there since cars were introduced in the later 1800s and somehow got into a crash , the car may have over heated or caused both to happen , which he probably set him on fire and burned him alive , and he is freakishly tall , so he may have been in a car that he could be able to fit in , which would need a certain amount of fuel , leading to him being soaked and then caught aflame , leading to his skin being burned away , eventually leading to his death, probably due to his wounds getting infected .
    I’m probably totally wrong , that’s just my theory .

    Entertaining the thought of this fan theory despite the fact that long ago Tim Burton mentioned in an interview that Jack was just a guy who was murdered and buried in a pumpkin patch....If Jack had been a soldier, the idea that he was a Hessian isn't too far fetched because he mentions that he was known among England and France, and the British are the ones who press ganged Germans into the military (the Hessians.) However, he mentions dieing in Kentucky. Kentucky was neutral during the American Revolution, their main fight was with British-hired Native Americans who were paid to scalp Kentuckians and were paid based on the number of scalps they brought in. Had he been a Hessian, he'd have been fighting on the side of the British, and not many British soldiers entered Kentucky during the Revolutionary War. As stated previously, it was mostly battles against Native American mercenaries hired by the British. Jack would've been sent where he was most needed to the front lines, which were nowhere near Kentucky.
    The Revolutionary War wasn't in the early 1800s, either. It was 1775-1783. In keeping with the idea of the timeline based on his knowledge of Halloween but lack thereof regarding modern Christmas, and his death in Kentucky, it is much more likely that Jack was a soldier who fought for the British during the War of 1812.
    There are also some fan theories out there that Jack was originally based on a character from Irish folklore called Stingy Jack in regards to the origins of the Jack-O-Lantern, and the Irish did fight alongside the British against the non-British controlled Americas....IN the War of 1812.
    Now, to rebuke the whole thing fairly simply.....Jack in NMBC did NOT know what snow even was. However, it snows quite often in Germany, it snows in Britain but it only sticks maybe 15 days of the year presently...may have been different in the 1800s. The only place between Ireland, Britain, and Germany where it doesn't really snow is Ireland, though there are some mountains in Ireland that have snow on them during the winter...most winters in Ireland are rainy. So this suggests that Jack was most probably not a Hessian soldier and probably didn't fight in either the Revolutionary War OR the War of 1812 because he'd have experienced at least one or two snowy winters in either Britain or North America during the span of those years spent in military service. He could've been an Irish soldier who died in the War of 1812 before winter hit because the War of 1812 lasted from June 18, 1812 until February 18, 1815. So if he died early on in the war, he could've died before winter ever hit....and had he been Irish, he probably wouldn't have had much contact with snow, or very little memory of it from before he died. We do not, however, know in what year NMBC takes place (other than modern times, probably meant to reflect the 1990s) and how long Jack had already been Pumpkin King to that point. So other than his surprise at certain aspects of the Christmas holiday and traditions, we don't have a solid timeline.
    However the whole theory is still absolutely marvelous from a fictitious standpoint. I loved the Adventures of Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad (1949) as it was by far one of the more creepy cartoons around during my childhood.I've also always loved the legends and lore surrounding the Headless Horseman and Sleepy Hollow. ^.^

    • @rainnebaby9141
      @rainnebaby9141 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Your point doesn't debunk his theory friend. He even says that jack, in the possibility of being an Irish soldier, may have seen snow once or twice before but had little to no recollection of it after his death. likewise, humans retain tons of information even if we can't immediately recall it, so jack may have known snow in his lifetime and forgotten it after his death, only to then recall the vague idea of snow and snowball in the heat of his excitement upon discovering Christmas Town.

    • @jbellehaven285
      @jbellehaven285 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I never said that it debunked anything. Just that there were some inconsistencies with the theory historically. However it's still a fun idea to entertain. However it *does* debunk his Hessian / Headless Horseman theory if we follow the timeline he set. Jack states in one of his songs that he died in Kentucky. No Hessians died in Kentucky as far as we know in recorded history. However, several Irish soldiers may have.

    "'Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems
    In a place that perhaps you've seen in your dreams.
    For the story that you are about to be told
    Began with the holiday worlds of old.
    Now, you've probably wondered where holidays come from.
    If you haven't, I'd say it's time you begun.
    For holidays are the result of much fuss and hard work
    For the worlds that create them for us.
    Well, you see now, quite simply that's all that they do--
    Making one unique holiday, especially for you."
    Asking who Jack is would be like wondering whose skin was used to make Sally, because that's what she is, a human skin, sewn together and stuffed with autumn leaves.
    And a mother.
    "With four or five skeleton children at hand,
    Playing strange little tunes,
    In their xylophone band"
    Jack has always been the Pumpkin King, the ruler of Halloween. But once, just for a night, he got to be Sandy Klaws.

    Jack likes to scare people not kill them. And as he makes no mention of ever losing his head for an extended period I find your theory very unbelievable. They don't even have the same body types. Could it be that Jack is just quite simply Jack. Burton himself has already disclosed that
    "Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. But no one says you have to write them in that order.". This references Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride as being part of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

  • @cliffordollis5878
    @cliffordollis5878 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Jack’s backstory is in James and the Giant Peach. He was a pirate captain (great leader and fighter like you said) back in the 1600s who loved to scare people. Jack said “to have died in Kentucky I’m Mr. unlucky and I’m known throughout England and France.” He sailed throughout Europe looting ships abs eventually got lost in Antartica where his ship sunk and his whole crew died. Antarctica like Kentucky is basically in the middle of nowhere (no offense to anyone). Jack’s crew kicked him out after the battle with Mr. Centipede and he decided to become a good guy. He learned how to make the magic green things that grew the Giant Peach and brought him back from the dead. He used them to bring other dead people back including the Mayor and Dr. Finkelstien. If you think about it, Jack highjacked another holiday much like pirates would highjack other ships.

    Not a theory about Jack.. But about zero. Okay.... Zero was actually Sparky from Frankenweenie before he died. Then he was Scraps from corpse bride. Then of course he becomes Zero.
    Now my theory about Jack is that all of the dog owners from all those movies are the same person!!!! In Frankenweenie that was him as a little boy. Then he becomes Victor in corpse bride. And then Jack. I understand they all have different names but that is because once Victor got older he moved away from his friends an wanted to start over... So he changed his name to Victor. When he died he went to Halloween Town and he didn't want anyone to recognize/remember him.

    Another thing to kinda support the theory is when jack is being carried out in the opening scenes of nightmare before Christmas, he’s on a horse with a pumpkin for a head. Another thing is during this scene he swallows the fire, lighting himself on fire, to which the headless horseman has a pumpkin light on fire,

    I think his real identity is stingy Jack. A man that like to play tricks on people and was far too stingy to help anyone but himself. He was clever though he managed to trick Satan more than once. When he finally died he was such a wicked man that heaven didn't let him in. So he went to hell and when Satan saw who it was he was so ashamed of being tricked he didn't let him in either. He did give Jack one thing a coal of hellfire which burns bright and never goes out. Jack hollowed out a turnips and put the coal into it and that's Jack's lantern. forced to travel between worlds I guess he settled in Halloween town that explains why he can't stay dead. In Ireland they used hollow out turnips and put candles in them I'm sure Satan told the other demons not to bother anyone with a burning turnip on the doorstep. naturally everyone does it who wants to be bothered by demons. And when Irish immigrants moved to America pumpkins were far easier than turnips to carve. Jack's lantern jack-o'-lantern. Maybe the o was to remind people of its Irish heritage O'Brien O'Malley O'Hickey who knows what Jack's last name really was.

    My theory: Jack Skellington is the pirate Calico Jack.
    1, Jack appears as the captain of the ghost ship James runs into in the icy waters.
    2, "Calico" Jack Rackham died in 1720, before modern Christmas practices in the 19th century.
    3, After Calico Jack was executed, his body was left in an iron gibbet for possibly years, his skeleton was on display for a very long time.
    4, Calico clothing of the time very strongly favored stripes, which Skellington wears
    5, They even have the same name lmao

Obviously jumping into the fountain in the middle of town and revealing Jack Skellington! This part happens to be my favorite. 1. Nightmare Before Christmas was originally produced by Touchstone Pictures and had no connection with Walt Disney at the time of it's making
    2. Disney's The Headless Horseman is BUFF, and the size of an average man. Jack Skellington is thin and tall with lanky, long arms and long, bony fingers. He also has teeny tiny feet. The Headless Horseman's Feet are of Average size and his fingers are not as long as Jack's.
    3. Jack is not known for riding a black horse. Only a prop horse. Wouldn't there be horse in Halloween Town then? Wouldn't Jack then own this Horse (Skeleton, Ghost, or otherwise)
    4. Jack is known for having a Ghost Dog. The Headless Horseman does NOT have a Dog.
    5. The setting doesn't make sense. "The Legend of Sleepy Hallow" took place in Sleepy Hallow, New York during the American Revolutionary War, but Jack claims he scared in Kentucky, and is known throughout England and France (according to Jack's Lament).

    Here's why I love this theory and believe it. The Headless Horseman was killed in life by a cannon. Jack as Santa was defeated by being shot out of the air with a modern type of cannon. Artistically, it checks out.

    Only problem is what happened to the horse? I always assumed that was an attack were part of the original story and hunting. Couldn't it be a possibility that him saying he's "dead" is not in the sense of dead and alive but like I might say im "mammalian"? More of a descriptor of the class of creature than any comment on its previous state.

      It’s a Christmas movie. Let’s come up with some theories now, so I haven’t watched all the video yet. But I gather from your comment he gets shot in the face, could’ve been from fighting the Indians and that’s why he didn’t go to the thanksgiving one (I know they didn’t eat the turkey then yea) could’ve been french and the guillotine/British axe/sword what have you... buried with his head so there’s that one...

    I love Jack Skellington. I have wondered this too. I thought that there could be clues in "Jack's Lament". There's a line i have thought might give a clue but I have no idea what it leads to; the line is "To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr. Unlucky and I'm known throughtout England and France. And since I am dead i can take off my head to recite Shakespherean quotations." I have been thinking maybe Jack was some kind of performer/entertainer while human. Also Jack is tired of scaring and doing the same thing every year so that is how he ends up in Christmas town.

    • @emmad.176

    Very interesting theory!! I can’t say that he was ever the Headless horseman though bc it’s obvious the horseman is more of the murdering sort and Jack just likes to strike fear. Maybe he murdered people when he was alive but it doesn’t seem to be his key way of striking fear like the horseman. Hmmmmm….

    frankenweenie's main character is named Victor and same for Corpse Bride and the both owned dogs. In frankenweenie his dog dies and the dead dog in Corpse Bride is that dog. And in the nightmare before christmas i feel like Victor didn't want to go by Victor because he was known by the dead already and he didn't want them to because of his decision not to continue the marriage with Emily that he changed his name to Jack and from there on. I'm claiming to be right or anything it's just what I think.

    My theory is that there once existed a prominent figure named Jack the Pumpkin Head, renowned for his charismatic persona and eerie charm. He was known to be quite talkative and had formed a close, almost amicable relationship with the devil himself, who occasionally paid visits to Jack. However, one day, Jack confided in the devil, expressing a deep desire to be replaced and take on the mantle of the illustrious Pumpkin King.
    In a twist of fate, the devil granted Jack's wish, causing him to vanish mysteriously from the town, leaving the residents perplexed and sorrowful over his sudden disappearance. Despite their efforts to find him, Jack was never seen again. In a peculiar turn of events, a note was found, purportedly from Jack himself, declaring his departure from the town to embark on a new journey. The note hinted at the inevitability of someone replacing him as the new Pumpkin King.
    As time passed, the memory of Jack the Pumpkin Head gradually faded from the town's collective consciousness, relegating him to the status of a mere legend and eventually a children's story. Years later, a strikingly similar figure emerged, introducing himself as Jack Skellington. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Jack the Pumpkin Head, he exuded the same charismatic yet eerie aura. In a testament to his likeness, the townspeople immediately hailed him as the new Pumpkin King, oblivious to the forgotten legacy of Jack the Pumpkin Head, who now existed only as a distant tale from the town's past.
