I counter this whole premise. I think that RT should not be a buying point, it doesn't seem to matter what card it is, 4090, 7900xtx, 4080, 4080 super(same card, different price point), 7900xt, 4070 ti super. It just doesn't matter, RT cripples the card so much that you HAVE to use an upscaling to use it at the resolution the card was intended to be used at, therefore, RT is still dead in the water as a selling point. This basically means that you have to walk away from paying extra for it and the user experience, as you call it, is just basically crap on nvidia side unless you use third party apps, which I find unacceptable and AMD's software makes people stop using third party apps like MSI afterburner because their package is complete. I own both, I have both Nvidia and AMD. I say, Nvidia is what you should get if you work with your computer, you shouldn't consider RT a feature because it breaks frame rate, if all you do is game, AMD is what I would get, hands down
I still say, It will at least take 10 years before ray tracing is something realistic as a feature to use, By than or before that there will be a new feature to replace it and be even more ridiculous to enable and start from ground zero again
100% agree with all of this.
I have a 4080 Super and I'm able to completely max out Cyberpunk with path tracing. I use DLSS on performance and frame generation and get around 90-100 FPS most of the time in 4k. These technologies are actually really good and I honestly haven't been able to tell I'm using them thus far, though I haven't played the game much yet.
Yeah, it can look cool but since it halves fps it's not really viable until gpu performance catches up. It's not like it looks that much better than non RT for most games anyways.
Like you said, even if you have a 4090 you have to use dlss and framegen to get a playable experience for the max psycho RT setting on cyberpunk.
What's wrong with using an upscaler? They give you this tech with the card..amd and nvidia.

Each to their own, Ray tracing is worth it on the right card. This has been proven by df, hw unboxed and many other channels of course gamers too
I went 7900 XTX because the 4080 was 300 bucks more expensive back then. I spent those 300 in aluminum extrusion profiles and built myself a nice sim racing rig for my Alpha Mini. Everything I play runs so smooth on my 3440x1440 monitor, and none of my favorite games require upscaling or have RT as an option. Maybe if I played SP games NVIDIA would have been nice, or if I had VR or triple monitors for iRacing, but I don't really want that. I'm very satisfied with my XTX
7900xtx is a beast gpu. Nvidia didnt provide anything close for the price. Thats why amd -> forever.

Why 7900 XTX was £300 pound less then 4080 the closed Nivida card at time was hight end 4070 which lacked Vram so the 7900XTX was way to go
My mid-range perspective. What I wanted last year, coming from a GTX 1060 6GB after many years, was £/$400-550 worth of 16GB VRAM, 256-bit, DDR6 that clocked around 2300mhz. Nvidia offered nothing like this until the RTX 4070... Ti... um, Super and that currently sits around £780 at its lowest. Their entire 4000 series felt like a squeeze until they decided to shape up, but too little too late. They over priced their mid range cards based on the idea of RT and DLSS. The former is weak for mid range cards and DLSS is a proprietary heuristic to solve refresh rates (while perhaps more appealing than FSR2 was at the time, it is also a smoother). I had £800 ready for a new GPU, but nothing I saw seemed right for the price. edit: I realise now, saving the money allowed me to splash on some decent flight sim shite so all good really.
I perhaps wish I'd waited four or five months for a third party 7900 GRE to arrive (a card not scheduled to be released in the west at that time or a 6900 XT), but the 7800 XT will do me at 1440p on a 1440p 165hz 32" monitor for a few more years to come, I expect it to perhaps begin flagging when Unreal 5 begins to set in and when the next generation of consoles, as per, and proliferation of RT emerges. Then I suppose Nvidia will be the only choice? Nice. It's the only card from either side in that range I saw as being worth it. The only other way is the used market for last generation flagships, which themselves do not seem to drop in price reasonably and continue to age themselves in terms usefulness of those flagship features. Turn it on to see how cool it looks the turn it back off for an extra £300 somewhere. Nah.
7800 XT was a straight £508 for me. No problems, no bullshit. Works perfectly and does as it says on the tin. It is a 1440p card, it can do 4K nicely in certain titles with a 5800X3D, but I rarely use it that way. I understand its limits and what it is sold as. Last but not least, I know I haven't _quite_ been fleeced this time around although it's RRP should have been at its current of £460-80 at least.
It does not matter, however. Nvidia dominate in terms of GPUs slotted into machines out there. It's a $ per sign-value market out there rather than performance.
The 7800XT is an awesome card I loved the one I tested for 6 months

After selling my 3080 for the 4080 Super FE it was about a 600+ dollar upgrade cost which was worth it for me.

Another good Video Frogboy, you would hope there is some longevity with arguably the 2nd fastest consumer GPU on the market! Lol I do love that there is choice at this level, 4080 super & 7900XTX, & want to save a buck, 7900XT & 4070Ti Super, its nice to have some true 1 for 1 competition from both companies, making preference an actually decision with very little caveats. Also I might sound crazy, but with RT I feel no1 sets it up right, basically for me I feel there are settings that are created to basically fake what RT offers for systems without it, eg. I feel ambient occlusion looks a bit naff because the RT tends to highlight the "shadow" added around the player and if you have RT shadows, you should get a more natural ambient occlusion, and for me lighting setting above high, do the same thing, adding artificial highlights ect to again give closer to the look of RT. So for me when im using RT. So for me, the best look and performance from RT, is achieved by optimising the setting for RT instead of maxing out everything as when RT is on you dont need the extra tricks to improve it. So frogboy, my suggestion is, try changing 2 settings for RT, turn off ambient occlusion, and turn lighting down to high. I have not tried this with cyber punk, but it has worked well with Doom Eternal ect. I found RT looked better (sounds odd, but I feel this showed off the RT better) and obviously a bit of a performance boost. But yes Frogboy, try turning off a.occlusions and turn lighting down to high. Let me know what you think.

Depends heavily on the budget, 2k cash will get you close to mid high range level pc
Ryzen 7 5700X3D CPU and either RX6700-6750XT or even RX 6800. Those GPUs are running $300 and the 6800 is running $360 all on amazon brand new. Great for 1440p-2160p or 2k-4k.
1500 to 2000 for a good Midrange pc
I would say don't listen to anyone on what you need to spend for you experience. No offense to anyone but gaming is a selfish hobby let's be real. It depends on what's important to you and whats everything your going to use it for if gaming isn't the only thing your going to do with it. That the cost is going to be why your looking to get out of your gaming experience and what games you play. I say do your research with what you have in mind and you'll get all the answers you need. Take for an example the games my daughter plays her 1440p machine cost her $835. Granted some of the games she plays are not too demanding. She doesn't care too much for AAA she only plays a hand full if that and her PC handles them well when she does.

And I'll be fair on AMD as you did mention forza motorsport which I've tested a little the last couple of days.
My 7900xtx system matches or even slightly performs higher at 4k with RT over my 4080 system.
Now that's not a 7900xtx vs 4080 comparison as its two different systems with the 4080 paired with a 13700k and the XTX paired with a 7800x3d.
But I also think it shows two popular configurations.
So in fairness certainly in this game I'm very impressed with both.
I bought the 4070 ti super for 1440p and don’t regret it, it’s an amazing card at 1440p for high frame rates maxed settings. The problem with AMD is the raytracing performance and upscaling isn’t as good, and raytracing definitely matters for me.
I think the 4080 should have more vram tbh.. like 20gb instead of 16

@jasonvors169 how is the 3090??? The reason I ask is cus it's got 24g and that card now is 1440p card and requires less vram. Basically 12g at 1440p.
I guarantee by the time we get to 20g vram none of these cards will hold up man.
Plus consoles are 16g and that's always been the good metric.
Believe me we don't want 24g vram games...we ain't ready for any of that. The level of rt will be thru the roof and 4090 will struggle yet alone the amd cards.
Vram matters but you need base strength too.

@@jasonvors169I agree man. If we are dealing with 14g and 15g unoptimised games imagine more vram. Amd are good for giving extra but I don't think the cards are ready. The 3090 is already kind of outdated..it was 4k killer but now 1440p. So you paid so much more for vram you didn't use.
So how much do you need...enough and that's what's tricky. Guess that's why the buffer is good to have either way.
16 should be fine for a few years cus devs can't just go 20 all of a sudden the sales would tank. There's like 5 gpus with over 16..7900xt, 7900xtx, 3090,3090ti,4090. Would you cater for 1% of the market???

4090 FE impressed me this gen. 4080S at or around MSRP for those wanting Nvidia features sub1k. 7900XTX still is decent.
I used a GT 1030 when the new GPUs released. I already had a Ryzen 7 5800X3D so I was ready to upgrade. I didn't buy AMD because the release prices were bad, so I went an open box RTX 4080 last year March and still using it. I play in 1440p, I use Ray Tracing if it is worth it and I have a hell of a strong PC. I wasn't always an nVidia guy, I'm still not concider myself one of them. I wanted to experience Ray Tracing and nVidia is better at the moment in it and has the best upscaler period. We will see what future will bring to us, but I will hold on to this card for another 1-2 years and wait if AMD will or will not catch up with nVidia.
Great review frog…Don't get me wrong The 4080 is an awesome GPU but I think the 4070 ti super makes the most sense for getting into Nvidia’s high-end cards. For 200 bucks less you get essentially the same experience as playing on a 4080 you would literally need the fps counter on to tell them apart. The 4070 ti super is always within about ten fps sometimes less than the 4080…..I just played a bit of cyberpunk last night completely maxed settings with path tracing on and dlss performance and frame gen on I was getting a super smooth feeling framerate around 75 to 88 fps it was awesome.

RT is good on the 4070 Super in 1440p. I was blown away at how good a night club in Cyberpunk 2077 looked in real time. I cant imagine that the 4080 cant handle the same in 4k.

Gamer Nexus has benchmark with ray tracing and dlss with 4090. The 4090 gets 81 fps with DLSS, 50 fps without. So if you are aiming for 60 fps in Cyberpunk with RT on you need a 4090 minium but also DLSS turned on.
Coming up, around the corner, the RTX 5080 during chrismas holiday. So i'll wait for the release of that newer card either to buy it or to buy the RTX 4080 Super at a cheaper price.
If the rtx 5080 comes out and (if) it is close to the performance as an rtx 4090 and (if) it is $1000 for the basic models I (may) pick one up at that time. I am still happy with my 6900xt which is on par with a stock 6950xt.
I play mostly single player games so I want the bells and whistles, but if I played more competitive games I would have then gone 7900 xtx

Sounds like the 5080 will finally be a 'good' 1440p ray tracing card. To me when you have to use DLSS/FSR you only do that when the hardware is not yet up to it. NVIDEA has marketed RT to hell and back, and the hardware sounds like it might finally be catching up to the hype.
The new vram is the saving grace for nvidia this time around to carry them

As the technology matures, RT will become more of a selling point, but for now DLSS is the main reason why you'd want to go with Nvidia. Being able to increase your FPS by 30-50% with hardly any image quality loss is incredible. DLSS also used to be "just a gimmick", whereas now it's pretty much a staple of most modern titles.
In 9-10 years maybe. ps8 era. As for now - rt is a copium for green fanbase.
4080 is good not a bad card at all , I’m just not interested in ray tracing , I still got my 6800xt and still kicks pretty good

I'm not surprised that the 4080 Super passes your standard. My thought is, it damn well better pass that standard for $1200 bucks!!! It's a powerful card, but the cost... Sooo much money for something that you're probably going to want to replace as soon as later this year when the 5000 series cards drop... :(
Until you look at the price of that shiny new 5000 series card. With no competition at the higher end, limited fab capacity and companies willing to throw disgusting amounts of money at Nvidia because of the AI craze, why should Nvidia be charitable to gamers on a budget? Nice review Andrew,4080 OG was not for me as i prefer FPS over Raytracing and its still not strong enough for uncompromised raytracing. When RT becomes the standard and 4k is the normal starting out res, then things will be good. I still found that I'm turning off RT in allot of games. I decided the Nvidia tax was not worth it for me. i could spend less
It really sucks that you have to pay upwards of 1000 bucks just to have a stable rt experience
i would advice you to watch some videos about best setting for skin tones on your new Sony.. Its to sharp and white balance is off, you dont look healthy. Once you set it to look good out of camera thats it. I doubt you do color grading on PC.. If you asked i would tell you to buy Canon, it better on auto setings for your needs. Sony is great but you have to mess with it like with Nvidia and it has complicated menu system.

i think its mostly textures look better at higher res. Like even if you dont play at 4k you can get texture mods in 4k for skyrim and they generally look better.
The benefits are multifold. You get improved anti-aliasing, higher quality textures, higher quality shadows, and generally a larger field of view.

I know it's beating a dead horse but honestly ,, nvidia has a huge lead with ray tracing, but in general with their software side, which allows them to use crap components and still win,, so they are making the junkiest hardware they possibly can without losing their "must buy" status. They're selling disposable graphics cards right now. AMD is actually trying to make solid hardware in order to compete, ,, but because of where Nvidia is ahead , they are "crooked mechanic"-ing at every opportunity.

I am sure the 4080 super is an excellent 1440 p all ultra settings graphics card but 4k gaming is only for those people who want to torture their mental stability, a not uncommon phenomenon among the hardware and FPS performance chasers. 1440 is for gamers 4k is for photoshoppers and graphic artists.

4080 isnt worth $1200 when you have cards out there that outside of ray- tracing compete with it at almost half the price. The price to performance isnt there to ask for $1200.
Instead of buying a 4090 just buy a 4k qd-oled and a mid range gpu and you're golden =)

I have a 7900XT and it’s a decent 4K card, but needs FSR to get over 100fps in newer games. 70-80 without FSR. I wouldn’t recommend over 1440p for those cards unless all you play are older games and don’t plan on playing any new for next few years. If you’re spending $100+ on a monitor, you should get a card to match.
Listening to this it made me wonder. You said you feel bad that it costs this much to get the experience you want...i agree.

If it’s not at least 50% raster plus significantly more than that for RT I’ll stick. But I think we’ll definitely get that. Besides that I’ve begun to run LLM’s for art and writing and stuff on my PC local hardware so the significant amount more Cuda cores is now a bit of a selling point for me.

Shoulda got the ASUS or Msi high end version. Gigabyte is ok I guess, but even the FE performs better from the specs I’ve seen. Also, going from a 4070 super to a 4080 super is kinda pointless bruh. At that point, the only real noticeable upgrade is obv the 4090 but I digress.

The prices for 4090 have become a joke and it is the a bad value proposition right now. It's almost 100% more expensive for almost 40 percent more power in my country. That's dumb man.
To recommend this to Frog or anyone is just reckless lol. But I agree with 4070 to 80 is not enough...a good upgrade is 40 percent.
