    The new iPad Pros are here and I'm afraid to say this, but they look MAGICAL. With truly incredible screens, huge performance potential, and a shockingly thin body, the only thing holding this back is iPadOS. Will Linus think this is worth the hefty price tag?

      Yes. I've tried them "all". I did an earlier Surface Pro (liked it but bought a model with very little RAM so it got slow), went on to a Galaxy Tab (liked it but was a bit janky), went on to an iPad pro (liked it but other than consuming videos and browsing I didn't really get any proper work done it). Now I'm going back to Surface with the new OLED Surface Pro running ARM. Will it be as powerful as the iPad pro (no), will the design and screen be as good (no), but will I be more productive (yes). iPadOS is holding iPad pro back.

      I use my iPad every other day for a few hours. I have a 2018 ipad pro with all the accessory’s, and its been nice. I use it for note taking, art, and content consumption, I also just like doing my school work more on here more. I bought it used for about $340 with 256GB of storage. With the apple pencil and magic keyboard I bought (also used) its about $445.
      I still use a 2016 iphone se because I dont need a new phone I got it at the max storage witch is 128GB and it has been great on ios 15. If your going to use an older ios device its best to have somthing newer on your apple id to download apps on.
      Ios 15 is starting to lose support from some apps, but you can still download older versions of those app, you just need to have downloaded it before, I download and delete apps on my ipad to then download an older version of the app on my iphone. I dont have to do this with many apps now, but in the future I will.
      When I upgrade my iphone in a few years I wanna get an iphone 13 mini, but before I get that Im saving up for an m1 macbook air with 16GB of ram, and 512GB of storage.
      My best computer right now is an old windows desktop with an i5 16gb of ram, 512gb of Hard drive storage, and integrated graphics. Its fine for quick things I need a full computer for, but its slow, and I don’t like ant version of windows over 7. Im not downgrading to windows 7 because of how annoying it would be to use it in 2024.

      @@Adowraththe only way of doing that is literally having the keyboard weigh more than the iPad. Half of the reason why this iPad is much thinner and lighter is because so many people complained about how bulky and heavy it was with the Magic Keyboard.
      I could see maybe a different hinge design allowing for more degrees of motion (I would’ve preferred if you could “bring it towards you” like you can with the Surface Laptop Studio), but to do the 360° of rotation as shown off would require changes that no one’s really asking for. If you need it flat, just take it off.

If the iPad OLED displays need 2 layers (Tandem OLED) to reach 1000 nits for the entire screen, how does the iPhone OLED displays, or some other smartphone displays for that matter manage to reach even more than 1000 nits with just a single layer, regular OLED panel? Some brands like Xiaomi even have smartphones, that reach more than 2000 nits of HDR brightness. Is this only because of the reason that the iPad displays are massive compared to a smartphone display? Or are there any other factors at play?

The gist of what they wanted to say was that reviewers are used to juggling between devices so they already know what to achieve and how to achieve it smoothly on, say, a PC or a Mac. I get why people are critical and compare these to macbooks or other laptops, because cost, but it's a different tool with a completely different job. they're making very clear with the marketing this is an artist's tool, with the most advanced stylus i know of, and an insane display. you really cannot find everything it offers together, anywhere else. (literally it doesn't exist)
    TLDR; this isn't a device for the average person, or even hobbyist artists, get the iPad air or a Galaxy Tab. if u need a laptop, get a laptop. this isn't a laptop and shouldn't be compared to one.

    8:08 the argument is the same it’s always been (but unspoken): if they make macOS on the iPad, then the fear would be the developers would stop making iPad specific software and the experience would be clunky for non keyboard users.
    I believe that risk is minor, and it wouldn’t matter because the people who would choose that experience would have a keyboard and mouse. But that is something Apple would care about.
    But changing just one thing could open up the whole world: let the iPadOS download any software from a web browser and let any web browser work (regardless of the engine). That would be a game changer for pro level apps.

    Well, I got myself one of these. They finally broke me. I am VERY annoyed it is locked to a toy-OS, but I have had so many tablet-style drawing-capable machines which have all sucked to the point I have stopped using them. Especially my Wacom one, ironically. I just want something that functions. If I can't draw on the computer I carry with me, it's useless. So, even with the new Surface lineup on the horizon I still opted for this for that screen, the general snapyness and polish as well as not needing to deal with the Windows clunk every time I want to doodle on the train. MacOS, or even better, the capacity to run MacOS-apps inside iPadOS would be a massive upgrade though, instantly leaving any and all competing devices in the dust.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You say you want MacOS on this. I don't think you do, not really. The clunk you describe in Windows is what you'll get with MacOS on the iPad. It isn't designed for touch, the whole OS would need an entirely new UI for everything. Remember Windows 8 and how much that sucked because of that?

    • @Hostile_Design
      @Hostile_Design 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@TalesOfWar being able to open a real tool and have it be a tad clunky is far superior to not being able to open it at all. Any time, any place. Always.
      Windows on touch can be finicky, yes, but add a trackpad or pen, and it's fine. Anywhere near as smooth as something built for touch? No. Of course not. But what does that matter when I can't edit my 3D print files at my printers? Those kinds of scenarios are what annoys me. When my 2013 Surface can get a job done easily, and an iPad Pro simply can't due to being neutered in software despite being a far more powerful machine.
      Opening a desktop app on an iPad doesn't need to function differently from the desktop version to be usable. The Surface line has proven that viable, over a decade ago. Make iPadOS and MacOS apps cross-compatible and open the desktop apps as is, and we'd be good.

    I remember when the iPad was first released back in 2010, HP announced they were going to release a Windows tablet to compete with it. I wanted to wait for a Windows tablet because I wanted to avoid Apple's walled garden. But by the summer of 2010, I got tired of waiting for HP to start selling that tablet (which they never did) and bought a first-generation iPad. I loved it. I used it primarily for reading e-books and online articles. I occasionally use it to watch videos or listen to podcasts. Eventually that iPad lost functionality as the hardware could no longer upgrade to the latest iPad OS, and the apps I used wouldn't work unless I upgraded to their latest version, but I couldn't install the latest version because my OS was too old. I tried some Android tablets for a while, but I upgraded to a then-new model in 2017. So why did I buy an iPad Pro last year? Because I wanted a larger tablet display to read digital comics. I would have been fine with a less powerful device with a lower quality screen so long as it was as big as the 13" iPad Pro (or even a little smaller), but I couldn't find one. My decision came down to an iPad Pro or a Surface tablet for roughly the same price, and Apple just makes superior tablets. But somehow, I think I can restrain myself from running out to upgrade to an M4 iPad Pro even though it does look really cool.

I ended up going from an old 16" Intel MBP down to the 14" M3 Max, so I basically need my next iPad for content consumption, casually editing photos, and drawing. I just wish they would offer a standard OLED (not dual layer) on the iPad Air eventually, even if they have to bump up the price by $100. I'd much rather spend $699 on an OLED iPad Air than $999 on an iPad Pro that is way faster than I would ever need from a tablet. But I think Apple knows the display is what upsells people. It's funny, that right in the introduction Linus says "I'd either use my phone, or my laptop."
    I remember the launch of the original, first generation iPad, the first one ever. And many press outlets - including national TV - reported on the lines of people waiting in front of apple stores. Many even asked the waiting why they are buying the iPad, and what they are going to use it for. And nobody had a real answer to that question. Most just repeated the "to increase my productivy" - basically parrotting apple's official talking point, but nobody could explain how and why that would make them more productive. Some few openly admitted they had no idea what they were gonna do with it.
    Almost 15 years later, we still don't know what tablets are for... a larger screen for your mobile apps? an ersatz-laptop for people who can't type? A handful of commercial use-cases have emerged - like restaurants using them as digital menu cards, or hairdresser taking a picture of you, and showing you different haircuts on your actual face - stuff like that. There are quite a few such niche applications where it's genuinely useful. But as a product category, the tablet still has no identifying purpose. When somebody owns a phone and a laptop - you probably have a pretty good idea, what they might do with that. But when somebody owns a tablet, it still always begs the question: "and what do you actually do with that?".
    (Most common answer seems to be: "baby-sitter - to let the kids watch peppa pig or something")

      I think there's a huge advantage though to getting an actual laptop that does run full desktop software, instead of phone apps.
      Getting an ersatz-laptop that's locked-in to a mobile app store at the same price you could also get a simple real laptop... 🤷 I already have a phone for those apps.

      I use it cuz the goofy ass app ecosystem means a lot of companies make “lite” versions of their desktop software for a fraction of the price. Like, I don’t need to pay fucking 200 dollars for Finaldraft when it’s 60 bucks (mostly) fully featured on the app store. DAWs are cheaper too

      From what I've seen it used for professionally: graphic artists - which is funny you left out since they showed it in the video, music and audio production, 2nd display/on the road programming, HMI display for factories (don't need a pro for this though),. management, great tool for meetings.
      The problem is that you have to find those highly specific apps. I worked as a CTO for a company and actively tracked down apps which would help me and it greatly increased my productivity, mostly by finding apps that removed all the labourous work, such as note taking during meetings, quickly creating presentations etc. It's quite disingenious to rant on something you haven't really tried or researched. "...we still don't know what tablets are for", really?

      @@85Portar Agreed. Graphics artists is a good usecase.
      But graphics tablets did exist long before that - (even if the older versions didn't have screens) - so that's nothing new the tablet as a device brought to the table.
      And for a professional, there's actually a benefit to having the graphics tablet be an accessory to the PC rather than a standalone device - as for any workflow that involves desktop apps as well, you don't have to move files back and forth.

    Well if you use your Ipad to work (Media or Art) it is actually nessecary to have the most power you can get. I have a 2020 Ipad Pro for school. Taking notes on my documents with the Apple Pencil and have all the documents in one small device is a big advantage when it comes to studying. So for the casual guy that watches TH-cam, Movies and uses the Browser mainly it can be old. For me it needs the 120Hz display (so the 2020 Pro) because it feels much smoother with the Apple Pencil.
