Thanks Bogdan. I found it but easier taking the belt off the steering pump pulley, not completely off but out of the way. Gives you more room to get at the lower nut, plus keeps your belt from getting fluid on it. Cheers.
I think the whining coming from the o-ring in the plastic housing. Was hardened compared to new ones. Had that high pressure hose replaced last year as well. Anyway, all quiet now.
Great video. Even a girl can do this diy thanks to video such as yours! And yes, that bottom bolt is a real beast! Dropped mine and couldnt locate it for hours!! Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. Mine is an 06 MDX and that lower bolt was a pain! If you remove the hose and move one of the electrical lines by the reservoir on the other side of the belt, you can get just enough space to get the wrench on. Could not do it with a straight wrench, that little angle is the key. Replaced the 0-rings, fired it up and after a while (getting bubbles out of system) it quieted down. WhooHoo!
I finally did mine on the 07 year. It was ok, but I really under estimated that lower 10mm bolt (I had to take rest b/c my back started hurting from just the awkward bend). But I did it. Thanks.
One important thing is there is no need or purpose to drain any power steering fluid. No, or hardly any fluid comes out when you remove either the inflow side or outflow side. Also, it is way more important to change the inlet O-ring with the one 10mm bolt seeing as the air is getting sucked into the pump past that O-ring. I used a 3" offset 10mm box wrench and it easily fit in and no need to remove the belt. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the detailed video. Followed it and went well, though you made that look a lot easier than I did to get the bolt out through the pulley/belt. Knowing you had done it helped a lot as I would have though the pulley was in the way.
I hear you! My steering pump also got replaced with OEM back circa 2015 (when I was doing Uber part time and the car went under a lot of stress). Now I just swapped the o-rings and got away with it.
This is great! I suppose if I wanted to be way too detailed, when that dark fluid comes back, suck it out and add more until it's clear? Not to mention if you do actually get it out what if you can't get it all the way back in and can't get the wrench back on the head to get it tight enough so it doesn't leak?
Thanks! It certainly isn’t very easy, but doable. If you still experience trouble getting it out, I suggest you remove the belt and the pulley: this should give you more room. Good luck!
I have 08 and my steering was whining a bit and PS leaked a bit so I topped up with Lucas power steering leak. It’s fine for a month or two then Power steering liquid tank was empty. Today I noticed the small slow leak in my garage. Would replacing O ring work for me? Also I’m not that handy so I want to take it garage but I’m afraid they will say just replace the power steering pump and that’s $700 I can’t afford right now. Appreciate your feedback. Your videos have save me in the past as well, keep it up.
I don’t think bad o-rings would cause a major leak. Unfortunately, it’s likely you have an issue with your high pressure hose. It’s very important to have your PS fluid topped off at all times and not get below the min level, which will cause air introduction into the system and can damage the pump itself. My advice: try and locate the leak source yourself first. If you can’t, get a professional opinion then and go from there.
Hello Bagdan, I love my 07 Acura MDX, but was not sure if I keep it for a long due to high car maintenance cost (thanks to rip off by dealers). But your videos encouraged me to have some DYI (I changed front brake pads and rotors on my own) and now I am confident that the car is going to retire in my garage only... I would appreciate if you can help with below Transmission relates issues. 1. Around a year back I received a code - P0847 - which as per my research is about the Transmission pressure switch. However I havent faced any issues since last year. But I am planning to change them along with my ATF change (as per your ATF video ofcourse). 2. Around a couple of month back I recieved another code - P0706 which I believe is related to Transmission range sensor. But again havent been facing any major issues since then, but the gear shift seems little sluggish (this might be attributes to ATF not changed since long time). If you have any insight into above, can you please let me know If I should get these codes (especially P0706) diagnosed at Dealer? Should I replace Pressure switches (P0847) and Transmission Range Sensor (for P0706)?
Thank you for your feedback! Your errors and transmission behaviour most likely indicate pressure switches are due for change. What's your mileage? Of course, just changing the fluid might improve your transmission behaviour, but I would still replace the pressure switches to avoid further transmission damage.
One more thing about Transmissions switches. I heard there are 3 of them. Should i change all? Also do you know the correct part numbers? I found its 28610-RKE-004 & 28600-RKE-004. But 28600 does seem correct.
Oh, I see. Definitely change the ATF and replace the switches ASAP. Also, 90K for a seven year old vehicle seems suspicious. Have you checked the vehicle history and are you positive the mileage is real?
From someone who designs courses for field technicians, this is and EXCELLENT explainer video! Do you post or share on the MDXers forum? If not, you should!

Thanks! Tread carefully, don't do anything you're not comfortable with doing. This is a pretty simple DIY for a first time. Just take your time, use this guide video and you should be good!
@@AcuraAddicted ok. i have some, but not all the tools from your tool checklist. once i have all on hand---i'm going to attempt the fix. i'll be following this video to the T. thanks!!!
Mine only whines with colder weather, I'm guessing it's the pump as I did multiple fluid changes since I bought it 3 years ago. You can get an aftermarket one on Amazon for $120. As it's not a tough replacement, I'm ok with a non OEM part. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for your feedback! Before replacing the pump try this solution, it's much less expensive. And if it doesn't work you can always replace the pump, just switch the pulley.
@@fortunatedad7695 No, when you get the new pump, it won't come with a new pulley. So you'll have to swap the pulley from your working pump that's in the car to the new pump when you replace it.
Excellent video. I noted my power steering fluid was dirty so I exchanged it a week ago but now I am hearing a whining sound which I didn't hear before. I see bubbles in the power steering fluid reservoir. Checked hose connections and they seem fine. Do you suggest changing the O-rings or have I damaged the pump?
Check the fluid level (should be in between lowest and highest marks when the car is cold). Then check for air in the system. If that doesn't help, replace the o-rings. That's just a natural course of actions with this (go from free to cheapest and up).
Buddy I am writing this pretty upset. You did not stress enough how incredibly difficult it is to get that lower bolt out. Even with a flex ratchet wrench I cannot get this thing out! ***EDIT*** Anyone else watching this that has the whining sound, just replace the top one if you find it is too hard to get the bottom bolt off because someone else told me after I already did this that the top one is the one that causes of whining sound anyway so I did just that and no more whining :-)
I guess I must have an extra chromosome or something. I ended up giving up. But at least I did the first one on the top and change the fluid that needed it anyway
Then you’re probably out of luck with the pump. If you leave the air leak in for some time, it might damage the pump, which is probably what happened here.
@@AcuraAddicted likely right its odd. Just cleaned resevoir and put it all together. Let it warm up and bled. Didnt nake noise til i drove. Not condemning the pump just yet. Its possible the veins are sticking hence the noise. Maybe its my honda Faith ive had it since 02 haha. Had the same issue on my gen5 accord.
I have to say that this is a nicely created video and would put these dealership out of business. Thank you. I got to this video because I was low on power steering fluid on my 08 MDX and wanted to know why. I did find that for some parts honda dealers are cheaper than ebay or Amazon. 12 ounces of power steering fluid cost 4.17 at the dealership whereas it's @8 at ebay or amazon. Also, I wonder if someone could help with a really hard to turn steering wheel for the last several years. The fluid is not the problem since I have it topped of
Hi Roy. Thanks for the feedback! Although the steering effort is very subjective (I have no issue with steering with one finger, for example, but others find it to stiff), if you noticed your steering effort has increased over the years, it's likely the steering pump issue.
Thanks a lot! Duh! Forgot to include the part numbers in the description... Here they are: the orange O-ring for the PS pump intake: 91345-RDA-A01; tha black O-ring for the high pressure line: 91370-SV4-000. These are pretty universal across Hondas and Acuras. You can get a set off eBay for about $7-10 or just buy directly from Honda or Acura - probably going to be cheaper, but you have to travel to a dealer.
Acura Addicted Thanks! Ps I just bought a black on black that I would like to replace the subwoofer on. “How to access and remove/install tech subwoofer” video anytime soon sir?

Would this mean you don’t have to use the vacuum extractor? I was using a similar, syringe type pump. The noise continued, but the o rings I bought were not genuine Honda parts. I bought the new parts and I’m going to try again.
I have 07 MDX 107K, the steering wheel is stiff to turn when car is not moving. There is no noise, fluid needs to be changed... I was told that I need to replace the pump also, any comments?
Hi Pavel. Stiff is a very subjective term. However there is a procedure to test if your steering wheel turning effort is within normal torque specs. If it's out of those and if it is uncomfortable for you, replacing the pump should work.
Thanks for the video! After I did this my brake fluid drained (around my front passenger brakes). I noticed a disconnected tube with a slot leak too. Any guesses about my mistake?
That's weird. Are you sure it's the brake fluid and not the PS fluid from the reservoir / bottle? The brake fluid reservoir as well as the booster is located on the driver's side, and the lines go from there, whereas the PS pump and lines are on the passenger side, so not sure how one would affect the other.
Acura Addicted . Yeah, the brake fluid container went from full to empty in a couple hours and there are definitely issues braking. I must’ve made a mistake.
Ugh! See where the fluid is coming from, is it by any chance the caliper, bleeder, brake line pulled out? It could be pure coincidence. Take the passenger wheel off and trace the leak. The only thing that comes to mind is when you turned the wheels left and right, the brake hose could have caught onto something or gone bad.
@@AcuraAddicted excuse me. 2006 acura mdx pickup What kind of oil is suitable for power steering? Which one would you recommend? How many liters or quarts does it take? asked about the one that is put on the honda and they tell me that it is not compatible
Hi Bogdan, after replacing both O rings, the whinning sound still persist. Do you think i need to replace power steering pump. MDX with 190,000 miles, pump is still original. TIA
yes you can swap out the o rings without draining the fluid, but if it is dark/dirty... consider flushing it out & replace with honda ps fluid. i just did this procedure & is going to tackle cleaning the resevoir and flushing it a different way.
Had the P/S system in our 2007 MDX flushed, but there's still a little bit of a whine - and, the steering is pretty stiff, at low speeds. It's odd, considering this vehicle has only about 90,000 miles on it. Wonder if maybe the o-rings are shot.
@@annihilator4000 I never confirmed whether it was caused by the o-rings or was the result of some sort of premature wear. In any case, the pump eventually needed to be replaced outright. Now, it feels as good as new (albeit heavy, as is the case with Honda power steering systems of yesterday).
Yay! I'm the 667th like! Take that! Also, please don't put any abbreviation that has to do with or sound similar to "Make America Great Again." especially in the description box. Also, this video has helped others a lot with their car!
Glad this helped! FYI, the entire series are called "Make Acura Great Again" since 2017 and for any foreseeable future. It's been quite successful so far, and looks like you are the first person in 3 years since the inception of the project among 660 000 viewers to complain. Sorry this is not working out for you!
I have a 2003 Honda Accord with the same issue. I took it to a dealership who quoted me $850 to replace the whole pump because it was leaking fluid. So I was able to remove the pump because I couldn’t remove the bottom bolt and noticed that there is already an orange o-ring. I replaced the old one with the new one and the noise is still there. I even topped off the fluid. What could be the problem?
Unfortunately, if the issue is left unattended, the inner parts can develop permanent damage. I’m afraid it wouldn’t be possible to tell unless the pump is removed and disassembled. I would probably get an aftermarket pump installed. Even the most expensive aftermarket pump at rockauto.com is under $200. You would have to swap the pulley from the old pump. And don’t forget to drain the fluid as much as you can first to avoid a big mess.
Hi Bagdan, I am in a bit of Situation l own a 2013 mdx elite package the dealer replaced both o rings on my car as the steering was a little stiff. Now the stiffness is gone but it’s making the same sounds yours was making before you replaced the o rings. I asked them to check if the o rings were installed correctly they insist they did so l am stuck here with the annoying sound which was not there before they worked on it. My assumption is they didn’t place the o rings correctly hence air is entering the system. I am not technical at all and was wondering if you could help me with tips or suggestions thank you.
If the stiffness is gone, they did something. The whining may also be coming from the serpentine belt tensioner. I suggest going back to the dealer and asking them to resolve the whining.
my was 2012 mdx 100.000 mileage , have hard to turning if I’m not moving, but when I driving it’s work good. Should I change my power steering pump or try to get new o seal replacement? Thank you
I don't think replacing the seals will improve the steering. Also, the effort required to turn the wheel is very subjective. For example, I consider it to be appropriate. You might not.
If i didn't have a pump for the fluid and only had a standard turkey baster to drain the main reservoir... would I have a problem getting out the excess fluid after replacing the O-rings? Or will most be drained or dumped out after removing the hoses to get to the O-rings?.. Thanks
I would say you might have a little more difficulty getting the fluid out of the hoses, but the majority of it is in the reservoir and you should have no problem using the turkey baster to get it out.
Parcero, as I told you in another message to improve my wheel drive I found on eBay a cover piece but only in black but it is perfect. I have some themes for you and maybe you are interested so that you enlighten us: how to adjust the brake pedal and auxiliary or parking brake pedal, change rear brake pads and discs Thank you buen hombre
Thank you for the suggestions! There is a way to adjust the parking brake if it's loose, however in my experience it tightens up by itself if you keep using it. As for the brakes, it's been about 60K kms since I changed the rotors and pads, and they have been holding fine, but when the time comes, I'll definitely make a video out of it!
I had a worse whining noise from my mdx. Replaced the seals as shown in this video. Noise is much better but still have a slight whining noise similar to your before noise when turning the wheel and inspecting. I opened the reservoir and don't see any cuffing or bubbles forming. Do you have any suggestions?
I have a 2002 MDX. Getting that lower nut of is real tough. Using an offset 10 mm wrench in conjunction with a regular wrench and your fingers is the way to go. Also, I'm not sure that sucking the old fluid out of the hose is a good idea. I did it but it introduced a lot of air into the system. If you watch many videos on how to change your power steering fluid, no one recommends doing it this way. The goal is to keep air out of the system. So I would say skip this part. One other note is that I bought the O rings on Amazon and the top one was not the right fix. Fortunately, it was my lower one that was split.
Replaced the o rings and still here whinning. I have an 02 mdx. It appears it was the 1st time the rings were replaced because both were black. Should I flush and refill a couple more times? Also, it's possible the orange o ring got stuck inside the pump around the opening as opposed to where I initially put it on the fitting. Could that be a problem? Should I ensure the orange o ring stays on the fitting when I insert it back in? Appreciate any insight you can provide.
Yes, stuck o-ring could be the issue. Any leak would cause wining. It’s typically o-rings, and it’s the cheapest to try and resolve. Try resitting the o-rings and flush some fluid if you can. If that doesn’t help, either the leak is elsewhere, or the pump has already gone bad.
have a question, have 08 MDX sometimes when turn the car to de right is kinda hard, i did put some fluid start working better after 2 weeks looks like start doing same thing i don't know is a have a leak or replace the power steering pump,
If you are having trouble turning the wheel, something's not right with your steering components. Does the pump whine? If not, it might be the steering rack.
There is a green liquid that keeps leaking under my engine near my oil pan is, I thought it was coolant but my coolant is not green. it doesn't leak much but over time (2 weeks) of sitting, a small puddle is visible. I'm thinking it's the AC clutch or compressor. Any ideas on what it might be?
Any check engine light? I would start with checking the battery - it’s more difficult for a car to start with an old or faulty battery, especially when it’s cold. If the battery is fine, it could be the starter issue.
@@nguyennkhiem I think that you may have a leaky fuel injector. You're gonna need to either install or connect a fuel pressure gauge to be sure. When you say sometimes, if it sits for a while, it's hard to start, but if it was running, then cut off for only a few mins, then it's easy to start back up. If so, it's most likely a fuel related issue. If the fuel leaks into your engine, then it becomes flooded, and your engine would have to dispose of the excess gas before it'll crank up. Fuel injected engines run best from the spray mist of gas from the fuel injectors unlike carborator engines. GL
Hi Bagdan, i car got noise around the steering pump area when the fans kick on. I just change power steering fluid and two O-ring. Any suggestions? I will upload my video so you can hear the noise. Thank you
There is no sense in flushing the differential - when you drain it, pretty much everything goes out. As for transmission: NEVER flush the transmission, there’s a high risk of debris clogging the filter and damaging the clutch disks. It wont happen overnight, but during some time.
Appreciate the How to. I figured try the $2 fix before replacing the pump. No go, still had the whine afterwards. Oring was very stiff though. Luckily it is very easy to replace the whole pump

I hear you! My steering pump also got replaced with OEM back circa 2015 (when I was doing Uber part time and the car went under a lot of stress). Now I just swapped the o-rings and got away with it.
as a life long Honda/Acura owner... never, never , ever.. use NON-Honda/Acura power Steering fluid... you'll thank me
Great video!🍻
This is great! I suppose if I wanted to be way too detailed, when that dark fluid comes back, suck it out and add more until it's clear? Not to mention if you do actually get it out what if you can't get it all the way back in and can't get the wrench back on the head to get it tight enough so it doesn't leak?
Yep, that’s what I would do. Just make sure you have enough fluid left to fill it in.
I tried to change those o-rings and couldnt get to the one on the bottom. I will try your way. Thanks... great video
Thanks! It certainly isn’t very easy, but doable. If you still experience trouble getting it out, I suggest you remove the belt and the pulley: this should give you more room. Good luck!
You can do it with a stubby 10mm. That's what i did. Left the belt on too. Hope you got it.
thanks!! Before disconnecting the battery make sure you have a radio code, don't ask how I figured out 😬
Sorry this happened to you!
Another SUPER excellent, video, my friend, and I too wish I had a bigger pump, haha.....
Thanks, Michael!
Thank you very much for very good explanation .You are the best..
You are welcome!
Thanks amigo. Great help
Fantastic video, my friend.
Thank you!
GREAT VIDEO, BAGDAN!
Thanks!
Hello Bagdan,
I love my 07 Acura MDX, but was not sure if I keep it for a long due to high car maintenance cost (thanks to rip off by dealers).
Thanks. I currently have 130k on it. I got it when it had 90k in 2014. I haven’t changed ATF ever . I thought it would indicate code 3 when its due.
Acura Addicted Yes I bought it from reputed dealer ( Lexus) and it had all history records at local Acura dealer. Also came with clean carfax report.
Exelent video my friend, you make look very easily to do this.
Thanks! Honestly, it’s not that complicated. This is one of the easier DIYs.
From someone who designs courses for field technicians, this is and EXCELLENT explainer video! Do you post or share on the MDXers forum? If not, you should!
Thanks for your kind words, Michael! Yes, I do post on MDXers and Acurazine.

This is great and helped so much, but found almost every hose to be rotted and cracked so now my 1 hour job is an ongoing hunt for the right parts😭
Yes, very advisable to replace hoses at some point down the road. I guess your time has come.
i have a 2008 mdx and it's the best car i've ever owned....by far. i love it. i watch your videos and the fixes look so easy. i've always been afraid to take on DIY jobs on my car-----thinking that i might damage something or not complete the job properly. my mdx is making the exact same sound. what's the best advice you (or anyone reading this) can give to someone who is attempting (or thinking about attempting) a DIY fix for the first time?
@@AcuraAddicted switch the pulley? You mean replace the pulley?
@@fortunatedad7695 No, when you get the new pump, it won't come with a new pulley. So you'll have to swap the pulley from your working pump that's in the car to the new pump when you replace it.
@@AcuraAddicted thanks for the tip! 👍
No problem! It should be pretty straightforward, just a matter of one bolt.
***EDIT***
Anyone else watching this that has the whining sound, just replace the top one if you find it is too hard to get the bottom bolt off because someone else told me after I already did this that the top one is the one that causes of whining sound anyway so I did just that and no more whining :-)
Sorry to hear! I didn't have any issue with this, as you can see in the video. I just used a regular small 10mm wrench I keep in my car at all times.
I guess I must have an extra chromosome or something. I ended up giving up. But at least I did the first one on the top and change the fluid that needed it anyway
Could be seized. After all, it’s a steel bolt in an aluminum thread.
@@claytonjames4779 By chance did you try to use W40 on that bolt? or an Impact Driver? sometimes that helps to loose up bolts.
@@thepowerofyourvoicepodcast wd-40? I couldn't even get the tool on the bolt 😂😭
So..i have this and replacednwith honda O rings. Changed with Honda fluid. Still have the hideous noise in my Pilot EXL. Driving me nuts.
Ok, in that case there can be a leak elsewhere, you’re right!
@@AcuraAddicted thank you for your prompt response
Can you tell the o-ring size or it's part number. Thanks. Love your videos

Bagdan.. would you not introduce air into the system when you open the hoses.btw I did mines by taking as much fluid from the filler bottle.
Yes, but once the air leaks are eliminated (such as o-rings), air trickles up into the steering fluid reservoir and the system gets rid of it.
I heard whining only for a few seconds while the air worked itself out.
Would this mean you don’t have to use the vacuum extractor? I was using a similar, syringe type pump. The noise continued, but the o rings I bought were not genuine Honda parts. I bought the new parts and I’m going to try again.
You might have a leak elsewhere, or the pump has gone bad.
Thank you so much my man!
No problem!
Thanks. Great Video. Wish they did a recall.

How many liters or quarts does it take?

Hi Bogdan, after replacing both O rings, the whinning sound still persist. Do you think i need to replace power steering pump. MDX with 190,000 miles, pump is still original. TIA
If you are sure you used the correct o-rings, it’s probably the pump.
Great video...one question. Is it still possible to replace the o rings. Without draining the power steering fluid?
Thanks! If you don't drain it first, it will spill all over.
yes you can swap out the o rings without draining the fluid, but if it is dark/dirty... consider flushing it out & replace with honda ps fluid. i just did this procedure & is going to tackle cleaning the resevoir and flushing it a different way.
Had the P/S system in our 2007 MDX flushed, but there's still a little bit of a whine - and, the steering is pretty stiff, at low speeds. It's odd, considering this vehicle has only about 90,000 miles on it. Wonder if maybe the o-rings are shot.
O rings will harden more based on age than mileage. So this makes sense.
@@annihilator4000 I never confirmed whether it was caused by the o-rings or was the result of some sort of premature wear. In any case, the pump eventually needed to be replaced outright. Now, it feels as good as new (albeit heavy, as is the case with Honda power steering systems of yesterday).
I had a fluid leak and I needed to change the high pressure hose. Parts+Work cost c$300.00
Acura Addicted Thanks for the fast response. I was able to find one for $50. :)
Good for you! I hope it works out. Good luck!
I have some themes for you and maybe you are interested so that you enlighten us: how to adjust the brake pedal and auxiliary or parking brake pedal, change rear brake pads and discs
Thank you buen hombre
Thank you for the suggestions! There is a way to adjust the parking brake if it's loose, however in my experience it tightens up by itself if you keep using it. As for the brakes, it's been about 60K kms since I changed the rotors and pads, and they have been holding fine, but when the time comes, I'll definitely make a video out of it!
If you use gravity and put pump below p/s reservoir might make easier removal.👍
I had a worse whining noise from my mdx. Replaced the seals as shown in this video. Noise is much better but still have a slight whining noise similar to your before noise when turning the wheel and inspecting. I opened the reservoir and don't see any cuffing or bubbles forming. Do you have any suggestions?
It might be that your pump is going bad.
instead of sucking out all the fluid, is there a drain you can do instead? sorry im not a mechanic
No, there is no drain for the PS fluid.
If you search ACURA TSB there is a tsb on this one, I have my MDX fixed by the dealer free with the TSB been 3 yrs now no whine or vibration.
Great!
Great job! I'm going to stick to my method which worked for me.
@@AcuraAddicted I'll try that, thanks!

If you are having trouble turning the wheel, something's not right with your steering components. Does the pump whine? If not, it might be the steering rack.
If I'm having a hard time turning the wheel that means the power steering pump needs to be replaced?
Probably, but I would avoid replacing parts without proper diagnostics first.

Any check engine light? I would start with checking the battery - it’s more difficult for a car to start with an old or faulty battery, especially when it’s cold. If the battery is fine, it could be the starter issue.

@@nguyennkhiem Ok then, still check the battery and the starter.
I think long crank just gone, i dont know why
